WOW, what a great weekend I had! Many cheers to Drunken Hat and Tikicleen for putting the Hoopty Hoopty Hoopty Hoopty in the Hoopty-lau. The event was so well organized and everything went super smoothly. Thanks to our designated hoopty-van drivers, Jungle Trader and Drunken hat, for getting our rum-laden hoopty-asses from point A to point Z safely. Thanx to Mr Smiley for making sure I didn't have any run-ins with the 'wrong crowd' at the Chalet. Actually, that place wasn't all that bad...only a few white unidentified crusty stains on the cigarette-burned chairs, some kind of stale musty potpourri smell, and for some reason my bath towel had "Dish Towel only" written on it with a Sharpie...at least MY room didn't drip water from the ceiling light fixtures all night! I can't wait to see everyone's pics (by the way, great pics TikiWoo!) So much happened but I don't want to spoil it by talking about it because the pictures will pretty much sum it all up! I'll try to get some of mine posted within the next coupla days. The dark marq room was inspiring! Jungle Traders' Whana Rei carvings were magnificent! I love the Hoopty-decal! Looks great on my jeep right under my "Got Tiki" sticker. The mugs are super cool too! Thanks so much to everyone. I hope everyone got home safely. I can't wait to see you all again at the next event! Cheers! Kalikiana

Oh man what a great time, Tikicleen and Drunken Hat get well deserved slaps on the back for putting this one together. Jungle Trader gets big props as well for his driving finess.
Furlogh passes for fun! we got bull rides, giant party waves, scary walks through the tiki motel, A crazy juke box with a mind of its own. The smell of Mr Smiley socks cooking on an open fire, poker challenges, pumpkin shots and chicken stix. All good stuff in my book.
DH and TC had an awesome pad too! A great place to hang out with your friends.
Thanks for postin' the pic Tiki Woo. I am trying to post the few of mine that came out, but shutterfly is acting up. I will try again later.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all had a blast.
Now back to your cells,

Chongolio

Big ups to the hat, cleen, their monster feline, Vic, chongos for a great time. I must also thank Martiki and tiki woo for their "help" with my poker hand which resulted in a great prize. Also my apologies to whowever actually ordered the the mongolian beef and I hope you didn't have to wait too long to get yours, I'll lay the blame on the booze, the cold medication and of course my own inconsideration.

T

Good times! Thanks drunken hat, tikicleen, and jungletrader! It was great meeting you Tiki Woo, limptiki, Chongolio, Kalikiana, and of course Unga Bunga! Martiki drank me under the table. I may have ended up under a table for all I know because I can hardly recall anything after drinking drunken hat's excellent punch! What was in that?

The Tiki Lounge looked better than I recalled it the last time I was there, probably because it wasn't filled with college kids, just us and a few regulars, and they even had the lava rock fireplace lit (as you can see in Woo's pictures).

Minnie's was a blast! The service was great, the food better than I recalled, and the drinks weren't bad. I had the Jerk, Minnie's Special, and a pumpkin shot that I only drank so I could earn another card - I swear!

The Dark Marq Room in Ripon was swell, I think.

Great job tikicleen and drunkenhat!

Can't wait to see more pictures!

TW

ah, the great mongolian beef mystery has been solved! haha!!

One thing I will never figure out is why Minnie's won't invest in more martini glasses???

Woo

It was a Hoopty Kick Ass Time!
I would not have changed a thing. Except that I ran out of the house and forgot my Hawaiian shirt. I'm the goof in the t-shirt
I double all the great comments about Drunken Hat, Tikicleen and JT!
Scott and Colleen, not if, but when, your house will be in some cool magazine.
Thank you for having us.
Always great seeing my TC friends as well!
I got a big bonus too. Jungle Trader carved me this great Tiki. Still working on the right place on my bar for it.
I am stoked to have Tiki Central and you guys in my life.
Thanks for havin me along.

More of the same from here. Thanks again to The Hat, The Cleen, and The Jungle for all the hard work. It went beautifully. Extra special thanks to Hat & Cleen for the hospitality and opening your lovely home to us lousy drunks.

Believe nothing you are told about my actions that night.

And don't look to closely at my outfit- it can cause seizures.

Here are my pics:

The conch blowing skills of Jungle Trader.

One of the many Jungle Trader carvings that look over the party grounds

Chongolia chewing on a blade of grass and talkin' story with a JT carvin'

PARTY WAVE!!!

Cowboy Bunga earnin' those extra poker cards.

I took more but they got worse as the night went on. Something about booze and photography just dont mix. Particularly when there is a loose nut behind the lens.

That was really the perfect Tiki outing all around. I honestly can't imagine a more purely fun time. (Even though this time I went with red shoes instead of a red purse.)

Hat, Cleen, JT, Cheryl, you are some of the sweetest and coolest people I know and thanks SO MUCH for organizing this and taking such good care of us all from beginning to end. The funny badge and cool mug were tops too! I hope you guys gave yourselves a big luxurious cocktail party Sunday--you deserve it!!!

I especially liked the size of the crawl: just big enough to meet cool new people like Tikiwoo, have time to talk to nifty folks I didn't get a chance to hobnob with much before(Kalikiana, Unga Bunga, Limptiki) and catch up a bit with many of my longtime favorite Tiki people as well. Rebecca, Chongolio, Melanie, it's always a pleasure.

Michelle, your Mom is wonderful. One of my fave moments from the evening: the sight of you two in the back seat of the bus, chortling "oyster beef" and collapsing in fits of giggles together. Jab and Jeff, how keen to have you guys along! And Smiley, gee, I hope you didn't sacrifice your last Smiley sock at the sacred Tiki fireplace! cuz you know how those Ugh House goaties LOVE to eat Smiley socks...

Thanks also to all of you for making my friend Sandy feel so welcome!!! She received sad news about a close family member's passing that morning and contemplated not coming, but decided she'd much rather be out meeting people than sitting home grieving. I felt she couldn't have landed in a more cheerful and kind group of people in all the world. You guys totally took her mind off her loss and cheered her up immensely!

Martiki, the outcome of the alohawear contest was NEVER in question after I laid my eyes on you. I personally didn't find it necessary to medicate myself, however. The stunning sight of such singular sartorial splendour constitutes nothing less than a religious experience in my book. Like having visions and so forth. I'm surprised no spontaneous stigmata were manifested in your presence.

No, I didn't have a drink before I wrote that. Honest.

I was very impressed to see all the great Tikis in evidence at Whanga Rei, JT. I know who I'm going to talk to about my first patio tiki...!

Tiki Cocktails seems to be undergoing a quiet renaissance. I hope this continues--and spreads to the Tropics next door--crossed fingers, folks. Minnie's is as wonderful (and wonderfully eccentric) as ever. And dig the new napkins and placemats. Wow. Isn't that cool?

Hat and Cleen's Dark Marq room is a masterpiece in progress. A pristine and lovely room in a wonderfully comfy and classy home, and oh, please tell Chester he was a very good host too. Mew.

I have only one more thought to add:

OYSTER BEEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

XOXOX

I still have much to write about the magnificent experience that was Hooptylau, and I also want to take the time to pull out some of the really primo pictures for commentary, but it's going to take some time to do all that. In the meantime, the brave and/or bored among you can peruse the entire album:

to answer the jab and if anyone else was wondering the punch was trader vics tonga punch. here is the recipe. it is quite yummy!

1 qt puerto rican rum
1 qt oj
1 pt lemon juice
juice of 8 limes
10 oz curacao
4 oz grenadine

i also want to apologize to vic's van for not doing a hooptylau sing-a-long at our house. we were under the assumtion that you had sang the song in the van because that is what we did. so i'm sorry you missed out on that.

thanks for the reminder tikivixen! i forgot to say thanks on chesters (that's our cat) behalf for all of the attention he received in the "VIP" room. he really enjoyed it!

i will post some pics of the dark marq room in locating tiki in the coming days.

thanks again to everyone. we had a great time and look forward to future events here at the dark marq!

M

Great pictures, Humu. That really helps fill in a lot of the gaps from the night for me and others I'm sure. (Look, Jab! You really did go back to Minnie's!)

With your permission, here's my favorite sequence of pictures:

Arrival at the Dark Marq room. As you can make out in the back, the drunks begin to circle the bar....

One of the drunks begins sniffing around the bottles....

The bottles please the creature.

They begin to mark out their territory

The drunks on the left have staked out positions of dominance and cling to the bar with resolute determination, while the drunk in the back continues to sniff around the paper goods. Seeing the death grip on the bar, the drunk on the right begins to circle nervously, looking for a place to nest...

...but is greeted with a snarl from the drunk in the back who sensed a threatening presence. Drunk on the right flees! Meanwhile, center drunk begins to press his fingernails into the handrail.

Safely in position, the drunks become entranced with the movements of the native drunk, who explains the rituals indigenous to his territory.

15 minutes later

40 minutes later

1 hour later.

Center drunk's death grip has now snapped a section of bamboo bar rail off and holds it as a weapon in his crossed arms, perhaps eyeing new drunk on the right.

2 hours later.

Now sufficiently lubricated, one of the drunks launches into a ritual dance, or "drunk fu".

"This has been Tiki Wild Kingdom, with your host, Martin Perkins!"

A few more from the Hooptywow

This last one deserves some sort of caption, note the pig's ass to the left.
