The "Down Under Bar" serving "Aboriginal Cocktails"????

What on earth could be the ingredients for those?

Did they have witchetty grubs and kangaroo on the menu?

Don't get me wrong, those are both tasty foods but the cocktails
have me intrigued, is that bar still open?, has anyone been there?

I found this while buying some (non tiki) things for my patio on craigslist. Inside the doorway I saw this and asked if it was for sale. The guy I bought it from didn't have much information on it other than his mother gave it to him. I plan on hanging it in my tiki bar, Does anyone know anything about it?

K

It's a Fijian Sali Club! Nice score. Basement Kahuna and Tikimecula have carved a bunch of these.

Here's one of Tikimecula's:

The Down Under Bar was located in the Coffee Shop in the Ala Moana shopping center in Hawaii and was owned by Spencecliff Restaurants. It is no longer there.

Here are some close ups of a few matchbooks.

For more information on the Tiki glory days of the Ala Moana shopping center see this post by Sabu.

So DC,

Now that there is a Spencecliff checklist, how many of those places do you have matches from? :)

Thanks DC.

Was a great Time at Trader Vic's Atlanta. We got a great deal on the two Luau plates and they threw in a green starboard and a wad of swizzles. The two bottles of lemon hart were just a bonus! THANKS JON!

I added these pieces today,
The Coco Joes "Keiki" came from a thrift store.
The nude figurine is ceramic and was given to me by a friend, he said it was given to him over 20 years ago as a White Elephant X-mas gift. Its been sitting on a shelf in his garage and his wife has been nagging him to throw it away.
I was thrilled to give it a new home in my bar.

U

Would anyone be able to identify a possible pedigree for this necklace? It is carved from a single piece of wood. Thanks.

From the past couple of days...

Trader Vic's Hinky Dinks 50th anniversary ashtray.

China Restaurant Chicago Illinois OMC coconut mug.

Five nudie girl ceramic mugs.

Fred Roberts tiki mug.

Another extra small Otagiri Hula Girl bowl.

Unmarked Kneeling Hula Girl bowl. I have the one from the Lanai in San Mateo and have seen the Tonga Room bowl, first time seeing an unmarked version.

Pearl of Wisdom-August Holland print.

Nice haul D !

My finds are so very modest compared to you all. But I do enjoy the hunt all the same. This guy is about 16 inches tall and made of plaster of some kind. A home craft I think.

Now this dagger(?); I can't tell if it was carved by some Boy Scout in Indiana, or a native in Bora Bora. I'm thinkin' it's not very old though.

If it was a boyscout, I hope he got his carving badge.

I rarely pass when I find this type of vintage Hawaiian piece, however I did because of the
amount of damage that you can't see on the back of one of the arms , and it was missing
the female mate. This had a date on the back dated 1954 w/ mfg name .This is part
of a set of end tables without the glass .Thought I would post anyway.Rarely found in the wild .

1961 Surf,

Nice menu.

I picked up some old bamboo frames for next to nuthin on Craigslist and put copies of my favorite postcard renderings in them for hanging in my motorhome (The Mo-Tiki).

DC

Slow day, but a few finds nonetheless...

Some tiki and Hawaii matchbooks.

Cocktail napkin from the Kona Inn.

Napkin from the Kilauea Volcano House.

The Chinafood Kitchen's Polynesian Restaurant flyer.

Clean and crisp paint Islander Stockton surfing wahine mugs.

Interesting shorter black Moai mug from The Tikis shown on the left. Bottom is imprinted into mug with Tikis and a phone number. I have not seen this version. The larger one on the right is what I usually see, with the stamp print logo.

PTD that's a slow day? We went under the freeway Sunday guessing that you had been there and left because it was 1PM. We didn't expect to find anything that late in the day but we were surprised!

T

A few random finds of which the 7 seas postcard was kindly shared with me by Dustycanyon. The Mauna Loa menu has really great graphics on the cover but unfortunately not the drink menu.

Here's a close up of the S and P shakers. No markings and both of them have two holes on top - the darker one had pepper in it and lighter one salt.

Looks pretty primitive and no idea where they came from. Picked up here in LA so they might be Spurlin (the Los Angeles Islander?) or who knows. If anybody has an idea where these came from, please help!

The plane! The plane!

Not so much of a find, since this was posted for sale in the velvet thread, but after a long week and a few days of waiting...I now own this nice Erwin...

More about this in the velvet thread!

PTD

Slow day again, not much time to go out, but if you want to see a really cool bamboo bar I picked up today for a friend, check out the rattan thread.

Today's finds...

Harvey's Lake Tahoe Sneaky Tiki green, Islander Stockton Surfer Girl (yes, another one)! and a crossed armed tiki mug, along with a Kahiki pick. I have been looking for the Harvey's block letter version of this mug for the past six years in the wild. In my opinion, the hardest one to find. The other version is the cursive "Harvey's", way more common.

Dinner menu and Easter Sunday Special menu from The Castaway at Coyote Point in San Mateo CA. Menus are slightly larger than my scanner.

Matchbooks from the Kahiki, Kona Inn, Kailua and the green version of the Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki.

Nice feature matchbook from The Outrigger in Seattle Washington.

Later,

PTD

I just picked up an interesting pair of sand art plaques, one marked "Primitive Mask" and the other "Primitive Shield," on the reverse in printed letters, so I am thinking they were commercially produced. The mask is very much in the Abelam (New Guinea) style, so I thought they were a fun find, though I would love to know what company might have made them. Any ideas?

Thx,
GK

Finds from the last few weeks:

Just as I am about to throw my hands up in thrift disgust from a very slow summer, fall comes and I found these:

Mark Thomas Outrigger (pretty rare around this part of the country)
Hawaiian Village Tampa, my backyard

K

Found this statue of unknown origins at the Women's Assistance League thriftshop today for $6.00..no markings on the bottom at all. Together with these lovely tall green plastic pineapples I picked up at Goodwill this week for .99 cents each, they make a lovely tableau for on top the entertainment center..:)

Pretty common but was still thrilled to find a nice copy of Pearl of Wisdom at an antique store in Klamath Falls, OR this weekend.

G

I would be thrilled too! Good find.

Found these Suffering Bastard salt and peppers yesterday!

http://www.ooga-mooga.com/cgi-bin/all/mug.cgi?mode=view&ind_mug_id=46916&mug_id=2157

These 4 black Islanders too!

sputnikmoss - those Suffering Bastard shakers are cool! Never seen those before either.

I finally found a sealed Surfite with Tiki Hut model at a garage sale yesterday:

Unfortunately, to get the seller to knock the price down from $10 to $3, I had to buy it bulk with all the rest of these sealed models (sigh):

Great score Sabu. Looks like some fun models in there. Would like to see some shots of the Surf related kits.

So, you gonna build that Tiki Hut?

DC

Those are great, Sabu! 8)

Sabu, you're killing me!

H

Hey Big Kahuna...look at the center of the photo of the models...that dark spot...right there in the middle...I think that you can just make out the handle to the Ark of the Covenant

From the past couple of weeks...

From my trip to NYC last week.

PMP style salt and pepper shakers.

Frankoma bamboo mug.

Mug from Tiki-Tiki Japan.

Suffering Bastard mug from Trader Vic's.

Islander Stockton Bumatay mug.

Sascha B mug (from Dan and Wendy), Mainlander and Trader Vic's Gung Hay Fat Choy glass.

Islander, Tonga Room and OMC coconut mugs.

Later,

PTD

Such a shame you find such crap, Duane. :)

Quite a NICE haul PTD ... WOW !

It's been ages since I found any good finds in Bangkok.

First up a unmarked unpainted Fu Man Chu, from the same stall that provides other unmarked generic tiki mugs I've found in Bangkok.

A two foot tall PNG mask that I discovered at secret flea market. Since this rather cool vintage market is virtually undiscovered by Farangs, prices quoted to foreigners are ludicrous ($115 for a Coco Joes) so I had a Thai friend do the haggling while I hid. The seller claimed he'd brought it back from Africa 20 years ago and wanted 3000 baht for it (but that 500 baht would go to the Temple so they could buy land for poor people) but my friend managed to haggle for 30 minutes, in which time a 9foot spear was added to the deal (which I managed to phone her to remove from the deal as I don't have room for it)and she finally got the mask and a paper weight of Mount Fuji for 2700 baht and that 1000 baht would go to the temple.

So perhaps I didn't get that much of a saving but the seller, my friend and myself did gain some merit in the eyes of Buddha, and I did avoid the whole Farang price fiasco where I would have been quoted a 10,000 baht price.

G

Here is all I have found in the last few months. Taboo is the first thrift store record I have found where the records is in better condition than the sleeve. Glass fish float is molded with four hash marks.

Today's finds...

Three of the usual suspect mugs...two Harvey's Sneaky Tiki and one concave bottom larger Trader Dick's Moai.

Tumbler with graphics similar to the Zombie Hut matchbook.

Three Hawaii license plates from the 80's.

Two Waikiki Maid picks and a matchbook from the Tonga Room.

5 Islander Stockton slim 3 face bucket mugs, first for me!

Trader Dick's and Stockton Islander ashtrays.

18" PNG slit drum with a bird feature.

Nicely detailed Maori tiki carving, 20" tall.

Today, from craigslist...

Haven't been out much for a year or so, but recently hit the street again and found these few items. Never saw these Don the Beachcomber swizzles before.

C

Some recent treasures...

teak Moai in EXCELLENT shape about 14 inches tall, solid and heavy

some great "hear, see, speak no evil" monkeys

who can live without large tiki carved wooden cutlery? Not me. A little dinged up, but perhaps someone can help me out with some advise on how to spruce them up.

Fiji Islands map and frame

4 nice bowls, pineapple and round teak dishes. GREAT find at a rock bottom price.

a couple of records... not quite a "tiki" find and I'm not sure of the etiquette of this thread so bear with me, but I got them on the same outing so suffer through the pics... if records offend you... look no further, just concentrate on the pics above :D

ok so these are a little more off topic.. but they are cool...again, got them on the same hunting trip... so here they are...

a cool cocktail candy/nut dish

"Victory at Sea" picture book album

and last but not least this teak sculpture in VERY nice condition. I've seen these time and again but dont know the origin or the manufacturer's name. I've taken a picture of the makers mark, any help reading it?

Love those monkeys Allen. Duane...you are a Tiki crap magnet!!!

This post was moved over from the Door Pull thread in case it was missed.

I found these carved wooden Tiki door handles at the JADE TIKI Restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, MI which recently closed. It took a crow bar, a hacksaw and about an hour's effort to get them off the doors. They are about 35 years old and stand 13 inches tall. Can anyone tell from the style who might have carved them? Thanks.

Here are a few recent finds:

Yeah, they aren't really tiki, but they go along with everything else.
