I'm finally getting to the Mai Kai this week.
Can anyone recommend which are the cool items that I must purchase?

evrything!

Hey Hale Tiki,

Great haul! I love those cocktail glasses. Those wouldn't be considered "Politically Incorrect" would they?

8T

Here are a couple of new tiki items we just got. First is a handmade wooden flute. It comes from Peru (the home of Tiki before he sailed toward the setting sun and wound up in Polynesia). It is 12 inches long.

Next is a cool lamp. It's about 21 inches tall including shade. Retails for $40

Oh but they would. And very amusing. A great throwback to a time when political correctness didn't exist. They were a great find.

I agree...Who cares about political correctness anyhow. It's got way out of hand. I'm gonna be reading my grandkids storys pretty soon and I was gonna start with "Snow White and the 7 Dwarves"...at this rate it's gonna be called "Pitch Black and the 7 Big Honkies"...snicker

A decent find today from a consignment store in Iowa. Salt/pepper shakers (note the blue jewel eyes), an Orchids of Hawaii mug and an unmarked wooden tiki mug.

I am trying to come up with something fun to do with the Leilanis whenever the bar gets opened. Maybe something like, if you bring one in, you get a free Mai Tai and we'll start lining the ceiling with them or something. Find some way to just plaster the place with Leilanis...

8T

That's a really clever idea Swanky. If you do that, I suggest that you get a notebook and keep track of the Leilanis as you adopt them. Number them and note who brought them in. I would keep a Sharpie pen on hand and get the TC'ers to autograph the bottoms as they turn them in on a drink. By the way, are you going to set a limit??? I think it might be a cheap way for some folks to drink if they get to turn in an unlimited number of them!!!! Sure sound like fun though.

Here are some of the bits I found in the markets in Sydney when I was there the end of last year.

and this from aussie target

nice cheekytiki!

i got this lil guy in savannah on the way up from hurricaine land.

he's cast stone i think. unique, i would say.

I'm putting this in tiki finds to keep the thread going. Anyway, this was my tiki haul for christmas. Between christmas gifts, thrift store finds, and stuff bought with christmas money while I was home with family, I had a hell of a haul. This, of course, doesn't include all the spoon and fork sets I found, or the new mugs I ordered. After my new mugs, I think I'm up to about 110 or something. Not much at all, but I've only been collecting for a year.

  1. Frankentiki Mug Set
  2. Pineapple Salt and Pepper Shakers
  3. Politically incorrect shot glasses
  4. Suck Em UP Hawaii Shot Glass
  5. All the mugs from my last post
  6. A volcano bowl from Kowloon. Crappy modern one
  7. Bosko Mug
  8. Tiki Farm Mr Bali Hai
  9. Two Polynesian Village Mugs
  10. HIP Tall tiki, 3 bro's tiki statues
  11. Parrot Mug
  12. Sumo Wrestler Mug
  13. 3 Samurai Grog mugs
  14. Fu Manchu Mug
  15. 2 panda mugs
  16. Tepco handled mug
  17. Pressed glass shaker with recipies on top
  18. 3 various geisha benihaha style mugs
And of course, 3 sets of tiki fork and spoons, 1 design I've never seen before.

All and all, with the witco piece I sold, and whatnot, I think it was a hell of a Tiki Christmas for me!

I had a big surprise yesterday. My husband and 3 friends wanted to take me out and show me a good time before my surgery on Tuesday, which will put me on the sidelines for a bit.
First off we went tiki hunting. I found several good records, a small coco Joe and several old books. The big find was a velvet painting under glass marked down to 15 dollars. It has this at the bottom of the picture LONG.AN.V.N Then a signature I can't read. Anybody know what that means? That's a big find for me here in the midwest, without having to go into the city and paying a lot more.
This trip was followed up by dinner at Chef Shangri-la(bought a few glass tiki mugs) and drinks at Hala Kahiki with a stop into their gift shop where I picked up some TV drink mixers and a hula bowl and a couple of coco joe key chains. All in all just a grrrreat day for me!

These cards are dated 1965, from french polynesia. They were sent to clients from the direction of the nuclear experimentation centre.
cool atomic tiki design...

the back of the cards

Very nice find Virani! Never seen such a cool combination of Tiki and the Atomic Age. I can see those images appearing in a future book.....

Here is some shag tiki fabric that I bought in a fabric store in Boca Raton, Florida.

Today I found a Trader Vic Coconut mug for $6.00 in a thrift shop. Sadly I didn't have enough $$ for the $26.00 Dollar Tree Tiki. It's still there if anybody wants it.

T

That reminds me Turbogod, this is the season to shop at your local thift stores for Aloha Shirts. I just picked up three cool ones including one made out of silk. All were less than $6.00.
Tikiboy

I found this at a little junk shop awhile back, I probably paid to much for it, about 4 bucks I think. But pickin's around these parts is sparce. So I snatched this bad boy right up. I have never seen one of these as a cork. I know you can make them, but this one, from the looks of it, was manufactured this way. It has the number 62 pressed onto the backside of it. It looks to be brand new and never used.

Found a few goodies this weekend. A nice big candle, a mini mug, 2 Trader Vics' vinyl menehunes a copy of Kon Tiki and a very cool 12&3/4 inch long matchbook from a previously unknown tiki bar from the past, the Castaways in KC, MO. (See my post in Locating tiki for a fascinating story about this former tiki lounge)!

My wife went to New Orleans and all I got were these lousy tiki mugs.

heh-heh.

Yeah, they really suck. I'll give you $1.50 each just to get them off your hands.

Hey Virani, you forgot to mention that the first 3 Tikis are based on the Zizou Bar/Les Tikis CD cover (...and the photo in the TAHITI book...and the Mary Blair painting I know.)

They are spectacular, especially the 2nd one. Please colorxerox them for my Tiki Modern research.

What is your quest?

[drool]To seek the holy Grail[/drool]

Martiki, FANTASTIC score! I dream about finding Bob that way. Good on you :)

Well I didn't have luck looking for a job (I got laid off yesterday, 3 whopping months) i did have luck at a few thrift stores:

A cool looking Aztec/Hawaiian theamed frame
A ceramic bamboo pot (with panda bear, as my wahine gleefully pointed out), an Aztec statue, a Tommy Bahama coffee mug (never heard of this place) and the best find for $1.00 A Lewis B. mug from the Royal Lahaina Resort

A little background...My wife and I never find ANYTHING Tiki in thrift stores. Recently, though, Dale's co-workers started finding stuff for us, and they "gives us luck".

Exhibit A:

PMP mugs, $4.50 for the pair.

Exhibit B:

This bowl, which is a little bigger than usual, was given to Dale one day at work. It was 50 cents with another item...25 cents for bowl, not bad. They didn't know if it was Tiki or "alien" so they were a little hesitant to get it for us. Of course we assured them they can keep bringing us this sort of stuff.

So, one day, Exhibit C appears:

50 cents. They weren't sure if it was Tiki but they brought it, anyway.
So - thanks Michelle & Jeremy!

Ran

P.S. - look in Beyond Tiki for another thrift store find.

This thread really makes me sick sometimes.

But its also the best thing about this thread, to know good stuff is still out there and cheap too!

C

No one is more surprised than I am to be so lucky.

Remember when Redd Foxx would have heart attacks on Sanford and Son? I had two of those.

I thought I had my collecting disorders under control, this is gonna kick them in high gear again.

Cultjam - Without giving away your secret locations, what kind of place did you find them at? Thriftstore? Garage Sale? Estate Sale? Antique Mall?

C

Hey Sabu, it was a vintage store the size of a small bedroom! My friend was drawn in by the pretty lamps which was all you could see from the street, which were neither vintage nor collectible. Go figure.

Of course the owner picked them up at a local flea market.

Well! Between Lika Lika & Ran my shopping juices have been re-energized, or re-pasteurized, or re-something-ed... I'm going to find my local thrift stores & hit'em up good!

My latest find the moai on the right.

WAIT, what's the middle mug? Looks like the bastard stepchild of a Voodoo Grog Glass and a Coconut cup.

My wife just ordered this for me from a web site called: The Fred Society

How cool is it that I found a piece of pre-made tiki-ware with my name on it?

:D :D :D

My thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth...

After a miserable 4 month tiki-less drought here in suburban Maryland I finally happened across a mug! This OMC Hawaii Kai "peanut guy" mug cost me a whopping buck! I know he's not ultra rare or anything but when you've been dying to get your hands on anything slightly tiki related and you come across this, you feel as if you hit the jackpot! Maybe the slump is over!

J

Another bit of luck today...found a set of OMC unmarked barrel mugs at the Goodwill for $5.00...would have been better if they were from the Mai Kai or something but you gotta take what you can get!

You're on a hot streak!

Today I found this Bora Bora incense holder:

WAHOOO!!
After years of searching & refusing to pay ebay prices, it finally happened...
Minty fresh Tiki Bob scored for $2 at the local Salvation Army! I've had the Bali Hai version for a long time, but I have been holding out for an original "Bob".
It can still happen kids!

Great score!!
Wow that's two Bobs in the past month!

There IS hope for me!

(and if you ever feel like selling yer old one...)

Incense holder?? I've had one similar to that for years, and I was told it was a musical instrument. Hmmm... most curious...
