Stopped in a new-to-me thrift store in Longmont Saturday and found these newspapers from someone's trip to Hawaii in September-October 1964.

Here are some articles and ads that might be most interesting to TCers:

Another find not pictured is the sheet music to "A Whale of a Tale" from Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," for which I paid four cents more than it originally sold for in 1955.

I see this carving pretty often and usually leave her behind (I mean, I already had one with a lei and a flower in her hair!) but then I saw this mammoth beauty- about 20" tall! Little sister and rum barrel for scale ?

BergPauli- nice, huge...

Wow, Trav!

Long time, no post! Haven't stopped hunting, though.

Finally found some mugs at a (relatively) local antique mall. Two Otagiri mugs and a Three Dots coconut! There were another three I didn't have the cash for at the time. I feel an additional trip is in short order.

Found these votive candles at a flea market.

Same location, came across these steel guitar lesson books from the '30s.

The mask I inherited from my Grandmother. The cutlery - physically my biggest find yet at 3.5 feet long - was found at the antique shoppe across the street from my own house (go figure).

Snagged this nice clean copy of Edmond DeLuca's Safari for free. It's amazing what people will let you just haul away sometimes.

Finally, grabbed this still-sealed Leonard Zinn disc at a library book sale. This may stay sealed, considering I've seen Mint-minus copies priced at $150!

Old Target Tikis

So much fun tikis to see on this page.

Dan spotted this one on the wall.

Made of plaster and then painted.

We think it is old. Does anyone know? Wendy

T

Wendy, it looks like one that was on the wall at Carroll's Reef in Kent Wa. The owners mother made ceramic decor for the restaurant around 1962

Found in this thread. http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=34464&forum=2&hilite=kent

tikicoma thank you so much. Dan was so excited to see this post that he had me copy and print the whole thread from the link you shared. We were so lucky to have found it and so lucky that you have made it even more special for us. Wendy

Not so much a tiki find as a shelf find to display my tiki. Found the Los Gatos shelf of Thomasville's Hemingway-Key West collection at an antique store for about 10% of its original listed MSRP. I know "Key West" isn't tiki but I felt like it gave the right feel for a display shelf.

(That's my wife's Orange bird collection on the bottom shelf)

Lookin' good. The style fits. And, I dig those mugs too ... particularly the hitchhiking ghosts and the Tangaroa-Ru!

After I took the pictures I realized two pieces were still downstairs where we had stored them during the holidays and they never made it back out, including the Kevin & Jody Pele Tiki room figure. So that now sits on the top next to the plant (too tall to go anywhere else!).

Super cool Jason.

Street find here in SF

Picked up a few things from a flea market this weekend. A Pusser's Rum bottle ($10) and something I'm calling a Golden Man-Boobs Tiki ($20)...

And this print ($1), not necessarily for my tiki bar but kind of cool, maybe for my living room...

This has been a good week!

Found this copy of Thor Heyerdahl's Aku Aku hiding in a half-blocked closet at a random antique shop.

Got a smaller companion set of wood cutlery to accompany the big ones. These have Ku figures carved into them.

Back at the local flea market yesterday, found another cococut monkey, and this resin bust made by Lego of Japan.

Stopped back at the same flea market today and spotted this lantern that I had either missed yesterday or was put out fresh this morning. Chunk glass and lead, mid-50's, possibly by Peter Marsh. It must weigh a full 10 pounds easily. Brought it home and quickly electrified it. Now to hang it!

Had a little luck today.

Fathers day weekend find, a little light reading with a Mai-Tai on a perfect Sunday night.

Good stuff at the yard sales this weekend

A poster that was given out by Pioneer Federal Savings in Hawaii, looks like from the 70s or 80s I already framed it.

Kahiki Skull mug and sealed but long expired Coconut Snow flavored powder and Instant Mai Tai mix, anyone that thirsty?

A Gilligan's Island radio, I found another one years ago but this one is in beige.

"The Radio" score
Congrats

Had a good couple of weeks here- in addition to travel taking me to San Francisco (Smugglers Cove, Tonga Room, Pagan Idol) and San Diego (NEW Mr. Bali Hai mug!)

I got 21 mugs from a guy I met at a garage sale a few weeks back. He asked if I was looking for anything in particular, and I said Tiki Mugs of course. He was cleaning out his mothers house and had 19 mugs. 14 green Kahlua Hut mugs from the short lived bar here in Md, a single Orchids brown tiki and three more dark brown unmarked Tikis made in Japan.

I asked him to check if mom saved Tiki Swizzle sticks - why yes! We settled on a fair price for the lot and when I went to pick them up there were three MORE Kahlua hut mugs, and the bundle of swizzles tossed in. The swizzles came from the Hawaiian Room in Baltimore (one) the Hawaiian village (about 6) and the Kona Kai. And TWO dancing girls that aint quite Tiki - but they came from the HAVANA Tropicana so they must be from the 50s. Mom had good taste in entertainment.

Also got two Tikis from Fiji with spears intact from a local thrift store.

Oh, and I picked up a Tyree finally:

Better vertical image- the Tyree is about 24 inches- that Leeteg to the left is kind of huge so I haven't figured out where to hang it yet.

Pinball- score

Two panoramic photos

1st one
3.5 x 25 inches
Hyatt Regency-Kaanapali-Maui, Hawaii

2nd one
3.5 x 41 inches
Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

Another long dry spell broken last Friday when I found this nice Ku mug (marked as a "vase")from The Islands in Phoenix, along with a repro of a vintage Hamilton Beach mixmaster, both for the low, low price of $10.

Finally
I can check these 2 off the list

Aku Aku 10 inch dinner plate

Trader Dick's shot glass

And a couple albums

Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!

Mug finds from today.

The textured version of the OMC crossed-arms mug, an oddly tall Leilani-style mug, and a monkeypod wood handled mug.

Found these recently. The Maori tiki is from a street vendor cart in the Hilton Hawaiian Village, of all places (love the quality and black tattoo). I found it among more inferior tiki that are mass produced in Asia for the tourist market. The Ku image I found in a Hawaiian shop in the new Ka Makana Ali'i shopping center in the city of Kapolei, of all places. The store sells mostly contemporary Hawaiian crafts and prints such as T-shirts but surprisingly they also sell a small about of mid-century tiki items like this Ku image. The age and wear and tear is evident, which I decided to leave as is instead of restoring it. Lastly in the background is a tapa print I bought in the Bishop Museum store. Not of all places but a for sure place - haha.

Its a mass produced Bali carved tiki. Smokin tikis imports and distributes those, and sells them retail for $30.

Buzzy Out!

Cool!
Need to add an antenna and maybe a handle on top to make it like Gilligan's Island radio.
They did this for the show.

Yep, here it is....
