A friend found this in Wichita. Story he got is it’s been sitting on the owners patio since the 60s. Anyone recognize what carver may have done this or know if it came out of a particular bar or restaurant in that area? Doesn’t seem like Wichita had a heavy tiki presence.

That’s a good looking tiki Mike. Congrats on a nice find. At first glance the eye’s remind me of Leroy Schmalz (Oceanic Arts) work but the rest of the tiki is not Leroy’s style imho. How tall is that dude? Nice score! I’m confident that the knowledgeable folks here will be chiming in soon with some answers

Look at the work by Milan Guanko. Haven't seen this one before, but maybe.

T

Couple of Orchids of Hawaii mugs, Treasure Craft pineapple and menehune, copy of Fatu-Hiva, Congo Jungle souvenir photo, a cool Hawaiian album with booklet inside, and a couple of tea cups from the Mexico City Luau restaurant.

I'm guessing he's around 8' tall. Sadly, I don't get to keep him. A buddy scored him and promptly named him Ted. I haven't been able to convince him to pass Ted along to me... yet... but told him I'd search for some info.

Guanko was my first instinct but figured others may know better.

I'm amazed at how well it's held up for having spent 50 years outdoors.

My recent Tiki Oasis finds

Actually the center lighted one is from my son. He bought his first tiki, a devolved official NFL NY Giants football tiki. Hey it's a start. He has never shown interest before.

I proud of this carving, something I always wanted. Utilitarian tiki of an Ali'i (Royalty) serving bowl, not a deity tiki. Image or image style is from Hawai'i. Found it as the vendors were packing away. Unfortunately, the vendor did not know the carver nor the history of this particular item. Odr or new it's a good representation and I love it.

CN, Dat bowl is awesome! Did you get it at Oasis Too?
Congrats.

Found these various beer glasses recently... with a few others to match. And dug an old Koozie(far right) out of storage, that I picked up in Lanai, HI quite a few years ago.

Plus a few cookbooks that I’ve acquired within the last few weeks...

Mahalo for looking and for sharing. Happy hunting everyone. I’m open to trade the Trader Vic’s book on the far right (no cover, kinda, it was cut and pasted on the inside). If anyone is interested.

And a few run of the mill tiki mugs/Trader Dicks/Polynesian Pub/Germaine’s Luau

T

Last weekends finds, some Trader Vics mugs, castanets from Havana (1950!), tiki ashtray (looks like something by Treasure Craft but unmarked). I did not have a copy of Quiet Village, then I find three on the same day!!

This one was owned by someone who's brat was something of a budding artiste. And so far I can't decide whether it's a cool, historic piece of evidence of the oft-mentioned rebellion against the mid-century generation of "squares", or just annoying that a really awesome album cover was defaced...

T

A couple local finds from the thrifts. I didn't have much hope for the record, it being show tunes, but side B is quite tasty.

When I paid for the mug, the woman at the counter said that she was from Hawaii and that the mug was a "mou-ree" mug. Is that the proper way to pronounce "Maori"?

tikitube, I used to work with a guy from New Zealand who is Maori. Somehow we got on the subject of how it's pronounced and he proceeded to say it 3 different ways that he said were used by different Maori families in different parts of the country. None of the three were quite how americans commonly say it.

Thanks, good to know. For some reason, I always thought it was pronounced like "may-or-ee", but wasn't certain.

That's actually pretty awesome. You could do a Warhol-esque triptych with the other two. Or it could inspire the next art swap.

JB, hmm you might just having something on that Art Swap idea!

This is my first tiki finds post as living in Kentucky you rarely find anything tiki in the wild except for the occasional Coco Joes or Frank Schirman piece at best. Needlessly to say, I was floored when I was able to land this Witco barstool tiki on FB this week. Adding to the wow factor, the seller said he purchased this 30 years ago when the Tiki Gardens was closing. After a generous coating of Howard's Feed-N-Wax he looks almost as good as new considering he had been kept outside. He's an indoor tiki now!

That is the pronunciation I've always heard.

Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!

[ Edited by: hang10tiki 2018-09-03 17:06 ]

From a recent trip to Colorado:

Candles

Geeki Tiki (not tiki) Chewbacca mug

Two more of these guys ("4466" with the "Made in China" stickers still on) Did anyone ever find out the deal with these?

Tiki (Maori?) with the number 10 embossed on the bottom

And from a previous visit

Also found a cool Ice-O-Mat that I'll post over on vintage barware.
Cheers!

Never did found out any info on these. :(

Thanks Big T. I'm assuming they're a recent Chinese knock-off, but the imagery is kind of cool. These are a darker brown than the other two I found here in Jacksonville.
Cheers!

Awesome! I never thought to look at Dynasty's website to see if that might be the source. I wonder though, are the ones marked "4466" from Dynasty or somewhere else? I've seen other Dynasty knock-off mugs before that were clearly marked with the DW product number on the bottom. Although the "made in china" sticker gives credence to the idea.

I actually think that these are too small to denote any sort of number on the bottom. I've found tons of these throughout the years, 2 yellow ones yesterday, and have never seen one that was numbered.

Witco Stool

Ho man that is such a cool find. I keep periodically checking FB on the offchance something might pop up but it seems there's nothing like that within 100 miles.

BB

Slim pickings this summer. Raided the jewelry booth at a nearby antique co-op and came away with another pile of leis, in shell and seed.

Also this nifty little wood vase from Cuba.

Found some junk, last week:

BB

Okay, there HAS to be a story regarding that Bali Ha'i sign...

About the last month's worth of stuff:

Pair of PNG masks

Trio of Maui tikis

Lidless OMC Bai Hai guy and a Treasure Craft drummer

Moai tissue holder

BIP whale plaque

Pair of cheap prints I cant wait to upgrade the frames on

Buzzy Out!

Some pretty great scores all around. Here’s a few of my recent finds.

PNG mask

Sorry, it’s upside down.

And a couple Maori masks...

Almost forgot the War Canoe...

Doesn’t much look like a canoe to me?

Some recent finds, including the tapa suitcase used as a backdrop. I have green suitcases but I’ve never seen this gray and orange version ?

Just found this little guy at an estate on the back screened in porch. Vintage and made of lava rock I believe. Fairly heavy...not marked. Anyone recognize?

I have a plastic mold of that design that i bought off ebay years ago. The original design is by Napco. A little bit more information here, but not much.

Bowl i made using that design.

finally found these silver proof coins after a couple years of selling - they're from a 2012 set called the Fabulous 15 put together by Royal Canadian Mint - they pick 15 coins from around the world and offer them as a set - have never seen any that were broken up until a few days ago

BB

Slightly better pickings this weekend. Went yard sailing Saturday afternoon and came away with some vintage rubber faux bamboo stalks and some silk Bird(s) Of Paradise.

The co-op across the street never ceases to surprise me. Today I found this grody Port Light lantern (which looks identical to those currently being sold by Cheeky Tiki and is therefore likely not incredibly old) which is now the latest addition to the lamp collection.

The red gel paint on the glass shade had some damage, so it was decided to repaint it in opaque red, attempting along the way to give it a wipe-away patina to match the grime of the rest of the lamp (a la Skip).

UT

It’s been a long long dry spell for finds. The wait finally paid off with this Hoffman Kahiki moai in mint condition and on the cheap.

S

this weekend was all about quality not quantity - finally found an August Holland print in the wild and a moai bowl with no listing on ooga-mooga - looks like OMC to me (the moai look the same stylistically from a couple other OMC bowls) but not one listed with the wood grain

Good stuff guys

My library is now complete.

Hail tiki!

Nice score Hamo! I’m a sucker for books, my wife thinks we (I?) have too many.

Found this little New Zealand music box not long ago. Not sure how to get it to work though...

Yesterday's Goodwill finds... A wooden giraffe and a big green pitcher, copyrighted 2002 from Clay Arts, San Francisco.

S

funny i made a comment last weekend about quality over quantity - this weekend was the opposite - but got a couple i didn't already have - estate auction lot cost me $56.00
(6) Harvey's Mugs
(8) Trader Dick's Peanut Mugs
(11) Trader Dick's Medium Moai
(5) Trader Dick's Large Moai
(1) Trader Vic's Moai Bowl
several old time pottery candles, mug

here's a pic at the auction house and when i got them to the shop this morning to see exactly what i had

Good job on that light.
I still have one I need to finish.

Never look at this thread that much it was a fluke that I saw this at all, glad my tips helped someone.

BB

Thanks, Skip! Your work is always an inspiration.

Find of the week - a set of CalHawaii bamboo-handled dinner forks and knives.

On my way out, saw this forlorn conch TV lamp and figured I could give it a good home, and maybe dress it up a bit with some more shells and moss.
