Really digging the mini-moai.

Recent acquisitions from area shops and yard sales:

Hawaii Kai NYC mug

Kon Tiki Hotel Phoenix salt & pepper shakers

Hawaii souvenir resin bottle spout (Cook Island style?)

70's steel Primo beer can

Midcentury Pioneer bamboo spear & mask tie clip (Can't find much on this one. May have had matching cufflinks)

Real bamboo painted panel. Perhaps part of a folding screen? Had to mend the torn matting. Surprisingly fragile stuff. 2 bucks!

Ok
Met someone here in town who use to live in Micronesia.
He had a few items he wanted to let go of.
He got them all between 1999-2000
:)

2 squatters from the island of Yap:

12 inch

6 inch

Tapa:

Two Chuukese Love Sticks:

And here’s the ironic thing.
The night before I was going through one of my tribal arts magazines,
I saw an article on these, took a few photos of some of the images If the carvings.
The next day I own one.

A beautiful 19 inch Tino Aitu.
Carved by a mortockese on the island of Pohnpei.

Cheers all

Wow hang10tiki that's the ultimate find. We look forward to seeing your army of these mugs. Wendy

Hi Wendy
Two more items spotted in the wild

Vanuatu Carving

Been looking for a Dead Eye for a long time

In any spare time I have, I tend to stumble onto the Mandarake website which is based in Japan. Typically geared towards soft vinyl toy or any sort of Japanese pop culture memorabilia collectors, Mandarake is a wonderful site to get lost on. Today however I came across a minty fresh Rockin' Jelly Bean/Erostika mug. Amazing! $50 is a steal for sure.

hang10tiki I've never seen a dead eye or even knew it existed. What is the origin? Wendy

Aloha Wendy

A deadeye is an item used in the standing and running rigging of traditional sailing ships. It is a smallish round thick wooden disc with one or more holes through it, perpendicular to the plane of the disc. Single and triple-hole deadeyes are most commonly seen. The three-holed blocks were called deadeyes because the position of the three holes resemble the eye and nose sockets of a sheep's skull.
A single deadeye (or bull's eye) used to change the direction of a line.
Single deadeyes (or bull's eyes) are used to guide and control a line and, particularly in older vessels, to change its direction. More modern systems would use a block for this purpose but in traditional rigs with many lines to deal with, designed when blocks were relatively expensive to make, a deadeye provided an acceptable compromise. When blocks came into common use for adjusting running rigging, deadeyes continued to be used for tensioning standing rigging.

PS- had one of my best fines ever today, I will clean it up and post it tomorrow

hang10tiki You found a real dead eye from a ship and in wood. That's special. Maybe from 1700???

When you do the "find" from yesterday I hope you do it with dim light and with a flash.

Wendy

Wendy: Not sure how old it is

Ok
Here’s the story
Met a guy who had a black velvet painting.
He said he got it in 1980, he was an auctioneer,
selling off everything from a bakery that was closing down in Milwaukee.
He said the black velvet painting was of a naked girl,
it was in a secret room in the bakery where they watched stag films.
Sold off everything in the bakery except the painting,
he took it as part of his payment.
Lucky me :)

Anyway, here she is

hang10tiki that's a great story to go with a treasure of a Leeteg. You changed your tiki room to accommodate the picture. I remember all the times Dan had to do the same. One day we will visit you and the painting. Congratulations, Wendy

Nice discovery!

Wendy- awesome to have a lil history of any find, yes I had to move things around a bit, good eye.
Your guys are welcome anytime!!!
MaukaH- thanks

New Hampshire isn't ALL bad I guess.

Rescued this 1937 copy of Robert Lee Eskridge's "Umi" from the book bin at our local recycling center today. Pre-tiki, for sure, but it has tikis in it so I'm counting this as a double-win. The illustrations are gorgeous.

Good save, Bam!

Today's weirdness:

UT

Always nice to have a good find after a long dry spell. Michigan ain’t dried up yet.

Now THAT's pure Michigan. Awesome find, uncle trav. Been looking for that one. Love the photo of it in its wild habitat.

Always room for one more? ?

Yesterday's find

Nice find Prof! Is that a Diamond Head mug by Totem Pottery?

It is a Totem Diamond Head mug. It was, of course, labeled as an unknown vase, and wildly underpriced.

Can’t think of a better way to spend $40

I found in our local charity shop this giant ceramic clam shell that I'm planing to use as a serving dish for snacks. And also a small night lamp in the form of a clam shell.

great find! wood or resin?

Some tikis I picked up over the last 3 years. Lower left is half a Bumatay carved south of Seattle next to it are two 7 1/2 and one 8 1/2 foot tall tikis and in the upper right corner is a 21 foot tiki. The last 3 were carved by Art McKellips in Tacoma WA around 1966 for the Tongaroa (later Tiki) Apartments.

Oh and that's Jim Kruize (Gone Tiki) who helped me get them to my place and has helped me resurrect them.

Here's where a few went... Screen Shot 2022-03-18 at 10.59.22 PM

I almost forgot I collected this also! That had been on Seattles Polynesia Restaurant on pier 51.

Incredible finds, tikicoma. The Polynesia tiki is especially amazing, and enormous. Nice work! I can't wait to see what others have unearthed over the last couple of years while TC was offline.

Speaking of fun recent finds, there have been lots for me since this thread was last active, but this one was probably the most memorable.

They had apparently been sitting on a shelf collecting dust for decades, and this is what they looked like before I gave them a thorough cleaning. It was a pretty nice surprise to happen upon in the wild...of the rural midwest.

Picked up this Fiji tapa cloth today. Measures about 24”x24”

A couple other recent finds. I had 2 of the Trader Dicks glasses but one took a tumble.

aloha everybody, i found this trader vics bowl but have not been able to find it on line or on t.c. dont know if it originally had a lid or what, but here it is! tradervic1 tradervic2

Looks like a spoon rest, for use when a table of diners would order a large bowl of soup or some such. Just a guess.

Nice finds, everyone!

But Holy Cow, Hang10!! I've clearly been looking in all the wrong places.

Yesterday's find--Orchids R-17. I usually pass on Orchids of Hawaii these days, but finding an early model with a paper label is fun.
