I too have found a couple of these mugs in my adventures. No markings or imprints. I assumed they where from OMC. "A generic coconut mug for restraunts to purchase in bulk" was my theory.

I think your right I noticed it looked like the "Aku Aku" coconut mug on page 110 of Tiki Quest except for the label. I don't know if it was done by OMC though.

While fighting through an ongoing dry-spell I decided to go to a postcard show this weekend with my sister... after a lot of digging and about $25 including the $3.00 admission charge I came home with these...

The Kona Kai in Philadelphia entrance, Kahiki interior and the Warehouse

Cocoanut Grove, Don the Beachcomber menu detail and interior of the Luau in Beverly Hills

Kahiki drink detail, Trader Vic's Boston interior and International Marketplace with Don the Beachcomber sign in bottom right hand corner.

Sadly though after digging through Baltimore hotels and restaurants until my fingers were sore and my eyes started getting crossed, I didn't find a Hawaiian Room at the Emerson Hotel. Oh well!

Strange and surreal experience this past 10 days as per other posts my wife delivered our child on Monday (Pictures available later). She allowed me out on Saturday to do my 2 hour run as it was my birthday and she didn't buy me anything. (Couldn't blame her). Anyway, I scored this.

  1. Ugly salt shaker (looks like Black Lagoon creature)
  2. 2 Bob's from Bali Hai (total cash $9.00)
  3. 1 Huki Lau mug.
  4. Bali Hai matchstick book
  5. Hawaii souvenir magnet
  6. Westwood little thingy
  7. Tapa hanging Cloth 2 by 3 feet

When I got back I got some cool stuff from PJ. Those I ordered for myself.

Every place I went I scored and only spent $20. Strange days.

Great finds 410!!

All the shakers! The wonderful tapa! Yayyyy!

That little ugly guy kind of looks like a North West totem pole, I wonder if it's a notorious crossover piece?

Are you talking about the two little guys in between the Bobs? I'm assuming the one on the far left is the magnet.

If so, I have three sets of those guys, marked Kon Tiki, Kon Tik Ports and something else I forget (packed away).

GREAT finds! I can't find a Bob for nuhthin'.

Oh wait...is the magnet the surfboard? And the ugly salt shaker IS the one on the far left?

Dunno, looks "Ku-esque" to me from this distance!

T

Tikiwahine,

Thanks, I still got you down for Bob along with 2 other TC members. I am glad to say finally got the Bob out of my system, I don't need anymore so any others will be made available. Let's hope the "finding" continues. I will keep you posted.

Kono,

Yes, I thought it was Ku too. The surfboard magnet to the right is in the I believe its a toothpick holder or a very tiny shot glass.

my wife delivered our child on Monday

Congratulations! Boy or girl or do we have to wait for the photos?

I found an old 5 ft. long capiz shell chandelier in a box at Goodwill. When I pulled it out of the box to look at it, it started to fall apart under it's own weight, so I took it apart and made some overhead light fixtures for my basement room, "The Mango Pit".

That's so cool, great light you made!!

I haven't posted anything here for awhile, mostly because I haven't found anything in the "wild", just ebay. But yesterday I dropped by my favorite antique store and came across this pair o' mugs for $6.99.

They are similar to this bucket mug I saw in Humahuma's Ooga-Mooga collection. They say "Kho Wah Chinatown". Any ideas or info?

Mahalo :drink:

Today at Goodwill I saw a big, chunky mug, very crude looking, possibly made by a child. I probably wouldn't have given it another look, except I noticed the word "Hawaii" on it...

"What's this?" I thought, "Crude, chunky, from Hawaii... Could it be?" Sure enough, I turned it over...

and Trader Vic's Hawaii is scratched in the bottom. On the side it has...

Peeping Tom.

I may sell it or trade it 'cuz I'd rather have something that's a tiki. Or who knows, I may just keep it because I can already feel myself getting attached to the ugly thing (and I have two other clunky TV Hawaii mugs to keep it company).

I also found this today:

Coco Joe's #110.

Found this in Egypt yesterday on a quick trip with Holden. He took the pic and that is me down there on the bottom left of the mug. We're trying to figure out how to ship it back.

Wow, I wonder how much one of Those drinks would cost?
AWESOME Mr BamBen or should I say arrrrrrrrrsome

I like the mug on the left side of that triangular thing. What is it -- a Don the Beachcomber or something?

It's no good, there is a chip in the nose.

I have had some luck this week the three daga were $1.99 each and the two little guys were 99 cents. I have a hard time finding 1 mug let alone 5 in 4 days. Maybe I will buy a lotto ticket

GREAT SCORES RODEO!

That Daga may be common, but he's one of my favorites. He's like the poor man's Frankoma.

Good God! I think I found the world's largest Salt & Peppa shakers today...
These mutha's are huge, about the size of a normal drink mug, and crazy orange.
Perhaps they were made for the Iron Tiki Chef?!?!
Aloha,
:tiki:

A couple of weeks ago I found these shakers at the thrift shop right behind my house. I only check it once a week at most.

Someone had just turfed their entire collection of S&Ps!
There was also a set of wood pineapples and tiny wood barrels, but I left them behind.(still there)

These are hand carved, maybe from blanks? Crude, but I really like them! Odd that they're different. Maybe some tourist said, 'can I have one of each?'

K

A few recent finds/purchases:

L-R
A Tiki Farm mug I found at the Polynesian Village in Orlando plus some swizzles from the Tambu Room (1 for each mai tai I drank).

S&P shakers I found at a flea market. Are these Treasure Craft? pg 118 of TQ

An Accoutrements "Carlos" mug I found at Goodwill.

Also found this guy at the flea market:

Probably my best recent find was these:

Both unused and full of matches too! I'm not really a matchbook collector...how good of a find are these?

Nice! Good on ya!

We have a set just like these and they are also a mix of the two styles, so I assume they came that way (so you don't confuse your salt with your pepper?). I like them a lot too. Hand-carved tiki goodness.

It's been quite a while since I'd gone looking for goods so I decided to do it up right this weekend. Thursday, Saturday and Monday were devoted to scouring thrift shops, antique malls and flea markets in search of tiki. Here's what I found:

(Front) Coco Joes tiki pen holder, Coco Joes menehune carving a tiki figurine, tiki from Guam. (Back) Yet another Don Ho glass for the collection, a glass that says "Mogambo Bar-Cafeteria TEL 6323 CAMAGUEY," Sea World tiki coffee mug (actually got two of those).

Close up of the Coco Joe. I've never seen this one before. The tag says he's "Kuipeka" and he carved the tiki wiki wiki, with his magic knife.

Pair of paint by numbers.

My second R-12 in the past few months. Yet another TV menehune stir. My second small Polynesian Village goblet, these are smaller than the more commonly found ones. My second Quon Quon decanter in the past six months, but the other one I found was not as in as good a shape and was lacking the stopper. And then there's a neat souvenir plate in the back.

Carved mask from Tonga. Weird little bowl up front. Unmarked moai mug. Graphic Novel "Maui - Legends of the Outcast." It was published in New Zealand.

Close up of the weird bowl thing.

69 cents at Goodwill.

Here's where I really scored. Menus! I never find menus (well there was one a couple months ago...but besides that one). I scored a bunch at a flea market. These three are all from Disney Polynesian Village. They're OK, pretty plain. They do have inserts hawking mai tais and Navy grogs, but no pics.

Two from Trader Vics. The large one is dated 1970 but does not say which location it came from. The smaller one is a mail out menu from the St Petersburg Florida TV. I wonder if the larger one is from St Pete as well?

Even though it's a mini in size, it's still a full nine page menu.

Beef 'n Reef, Cocoa Beach Florida. Nice tiki inside. Aloha! I never heard of the place.

Dobbs House Tiki.

Love this menu!

Apparently a chain of polynesian restaurants.

Funny but true: I scored all these menus at a flea market that's over an hour drive away out in the country. I ask the guy if he's got a shop. Yes. Where? His shop is about 400, maybe 500 YARDS from where I live! Weird. He doesn't have any more menus, but he's got tens of thousands of postcards so maybe I can find some nice tiki PCs.

A pretty good weekend even without the menus, which were a very nice icing on the cake.

Wow Kono!
I'm so shocked and amazed at all the great items you scored! Congratulations!
It's great when you go out of your way to really hunt items down, and are rewarded.

I'm excited for you!

Ah, no biggie. It's like Basement Kahuna used to say, it's out there you just have to know where to look. And then get out there and actually look.

Hell, two/three weeks ago I kept visiting "Tiki Finds" and all I could think was "What? Has all the tiki been moved to Canada??"

I am stoked about the menus though.

YES! Those menus are just too cool for words!
I have not seen one yet, but give it time!
My persistence has to pay off at some point or another.

I imagine it would be very hard to find menus at thrift shops. Maybe at yard sales, but I don't do yard sales (too much frustration). For two years I've been asking antique stores "do you have menus?" and it has yielded one find. Flea markets seem to have a lot of folks selling paper collectibles and I always ask them if they have menus. Finally scored today.

Today I asked the vendors where they get their menus and they said that they have an ad in the Yellow Pages and it states that they buy paper collectibles and so people call them up. Plus they have a network of contacts. The guy told me he has a friend with a quarter million post cards in a warehouse!

Keep searching. I just don't get how there's so many menus on ebay but I never see them "in the wild." Maybe yard sales and estate sales are the answer.

Damn! I gotta move... The thrift stores around here look like they've been purged by the Tiki Taliban!

Kono - looks like you stumbled into a time warp to the old days of collecting! Nice finds.

That BEEF 'N REEF menu has me intrigued.

Looks like it might be another incarnation of the ISLANDER BEEF & GROG:

..Unless Tiki Steakhouses were common in Cocoa Beach? Kono, is there an address in your menu?

No. No address, no telephone number. What's in the pics is pretty much all there is. The back of the menu is just bamboo pattern w/o any writing. Sorry to be of no help!

Wayne Coombs told me a few years ago that the Beef and Reef was a tiki restaurant that had a bunch of Leeteg paintings. He credits the place with helping to inspire his tiki carving. Nice menus Kono.

But wait, there's more!

I went out again today and found:

Two of these bamboo bar stools with a tapa like upholstery.

Three mugs from Hawaii Kai.

Maori carving.

Go Kono! Go Kono! Awesome mugs!

It's been dry for me this past 2 weeks, aside from a little Hawaiian tourist tiki and something that looks like a cross between a tiki, an alien and a conehead.

The tiki vortex is centered right over you. And you're in Florida....Hope that's not leading up to another hurricane.

I've been victimized by the tiki taliban! I went hunting yesterday and found---
Nothing!
Okay, I'm exaggerating a little. I did find an Arthur Lyman record-- Bahia. In pretty good shape, too. For 99 cents. I was pleased about that.
I'm really impressed with the great stuff everyone finds at their local thrift shops.
I'm thinking of moving.

S

I went to Columbus last weekend and knew I had to find a Kahiki mug at least. I found a lot, mostly over-priced. I refuse to buy one off Ebay. They are too common. I found one once before. But $10-20 is a bit much too. This is as fine a cast as I have ever seen.

Slow day today at the Torrance, CA garage sales. This was all Doctor Z and I could scrounge up.

Fish Float lamp with electric fixture. Coconut-husk lobster. Esquivel's "Other Worlds" lp..

Various mug-shelving units:

Trader Vic's coconut mug, unmarked 3-face mug, "Fatu Hiva" by Thor Heyerdahl, jade hei-tiki pendant from New Zealand, unopened packs of tiki drawer-pulls, Coco-Joes plaque, black tourist Ku from Hawaii, Crazy Al lightswitch cover:

Large resin tiki masks:

And best of all, two giant black panther coffee tables:

Ha! A Swag lamp from PAD! How much did you pay?

Nudie unmarked barrel mug(it's quite small) Tiny Coco Joe's Tiki & a neat ceramic gecko

Hand carved Palm wood Book ends with an interesting head and a tapa flower pattern, unmarked. A tourist tiki, carved in Hawaii.

I got this glass from my Grammie's house after she passed away. I have not been able to find any information about the club it came from. It's a northwest totem pole, not a tiki, but there might be a connection somewhere in there.

Mojo -

The lamp was in a lot with some other stuff that Doctor Z bought, but I think it worked out to about 5 bucks.

inspired by Tikiwahine & SweetDaddyTiki's Thrift Store Adventures ~ here's my recent finds (not including a bunch of vintage dresses and cool aloha shirts) although 2 provide backdrops for these photos!

2 new TV coconuts, and one older one ~ each just .99 cents.

these two-faced, handled mugs might be homemade, says "Milton 1970"

Nice Miltons, dogbytes, but where's the tour of Seattle?

WOW! Lots of finds recently! I got lucky at an antique mall just this afternoon. Bought these two OMC surfer girl mugs (never heard of John Ascuaga's Nugget, though. Anybody know anything about it?) and this very nice King Kamehameha figurine by Frank Schirman. I passed on some over-priced Coco Joes for the cheaper Schirman! I'd like to learn more about his work; not much about him here.
