Tiki Finds

I spent last Saturday scouring flea markets and antique malls in the Lake of the Ozarks region. Thought I might have some luck since so many geezers in Missouri retire "down to the lake".

All I found was a 60's "mosaic-by-number" still-life with pineapple, still in the box. I did an internet search and, lo and behold, vintage paint-by-number art is a new hot ticket.

Kctiki - you're probably the person to ask about aquiring a Mainlander mug - have you seen any or have any extra - would be willing to trade for one!

Could you point me to a picture of one (or describe it) so I know what to look for? If I ever find one and it is rare, I would just as soon put it in the hands of someone outside of tornado country. I'm sure it would be an uphill battle to convince an insurance company of a rare tiki mug's worth.

Yee-haw! I finally found a great tiki mug here in Jacksonville. Got a Mark Thomas' Outrigger mug at the San Marco antique mall for 10 bucks. I know that's no epic bargain, but sure beats eBay + S&H. Plus I really like it.

As our dog chewed up the digital camera, no photo, but it's got green and black (possibly dark navy blue) glazing unlike most of the ones I've seen with just green glazing. OMC sticker intact but it does look like someone once put a thunbnail under it.

I just hit the local Goodwill at lunch and found a vintage carved wood perfume bottle. It's a groovy seahorse shape and the glass bottle is still intact with the "John A. Oya" label. There is even a little bit of the ginger perfume left. At 4.99 it's a definate "Thrift Score" in my book.

New Guinea clan spirit weapon, and the coolest 50's tiki print known to man.. a good week so far.

Basement, do you have more info on that print, such as origin, history, etc? Are there more out there do you think? Are you selling it?

Pele, BK is the man for finding stuff. He has X-ray eyes, can see through walls and stuff. Nobody, ever, anywhere, not in SoCal or even eBay, will ever find as much stuff, or as cheaply, as BK. He is also immensely talented to boot. It's a hard fact we must all learn to deal with if we are not to become completely depressed.

Today...An odd OMC "exotic face" mug from the Tonga Room (marked on bottom). $2.50. Coffee bean shaped eyes, large hoop earings (white paint fully intact). She/he/it looks like it might have had a lid originally (though no lip on the rim). If it sounds familiar and you know I'd like to hear. Speaking of lids, in the same shop I found a Kon-Tiki relish/condiment container (as see on the tables in the upper left hand photo on page 102 of The Book). With the lid. $1.50.

I think the August Holland print might be relatively common among TC'ers: I have one, Alnshely have one, Tikifille has one, I think Sabu has one... It is definitely an awesome addition to any bar, and the one BK found appears to be in great shape! Another fine score!

K.C.- They're right...it is an August Holland print. I'm thinking about using the maori in the print to carve a larger tiki. And Emspace, I am actually from another world where gravity is 60 times more powerful...

Believe it or not, that August Holland painting was once available at Sears in the 60's. If I'm correct there's another one that he painted that's similar to that one.

Thanks everybody for the info on the Pearl of Wisdom print. According to the August Holland website it was also available in the S&H Green Stamp catalog. Classic! I'm primed for an August Holland tiki hunt.

I had another fun (but hot) weekend of swap meet/garage sales here in Las Vegas. Not too much but I'm always thankful to find anything. A small Hip Tiki Figure for $1.00, an unopened can of Coconut Snow from the 60's (?) $1.00, Tiki Spa Brochure $.50, Coco Joe's Ashtray $3.00, Castaways Unused Matchbook $.50 and a Patrician (Pasadena) Ceramic Big Eye "Chop Chop!" Mug. It's not really Tiki but WAY COOL.

found these 3 shirts at balboa beach outlet in camarillo for $9. ea. I was so excited I almost bought the whole rack . . . which i might do tommorow.. i edited to mention they're shag ok!

I NEED one of those Patrician "Chop-Chop" mugs. That's gorgeous! I'm going to hunt one down. Also, are there any pictures, (photos or drawings), of tikis in that Tiki Spa brochure? If so, can you post a pic or two (tiki paper is my life).

Do you know anything about these "Patrician" Mugs? Like I said, it's not really Tiki, but extremely cool. I would guess these were made in the 60's and the ceramic is very thin, especially for a mug. She is in great condition and the back of the mug says, "Chop! Chop!" I'm not sure if I'm gonna give her up just yet but I'll let you know if I decide to. Here's the latest Garage Sale Scores here in blistering Las Vegas, NV. I got four Vintage Menus from the 50's/60's -- The Bali Hai in Portland, Two Menus from The Polynesian in Torrance, CA and one from The Luau Room at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, CA. I also got a set of Paul Marshall S&P Shakers all for $15.00. I guess the Tiki Gods were smiling on me this day. Has anyone seen any of these menus before?

Amazing score on those menus ! I've never seen that Bali Hai menu or the Luau Room menu before, and didn't know there was a Bali Hai in Portland. I'm curious as to where in Portland it was located... is there any address listed on the menu ? Congratulations !

Now that was a super nice haul, Vegas! I had my finds cued up for the week but had suprise guests...

Guys, as someone who has actually gone through an antique mall with Basement Kahuna, I gotta tell you I have never seen anything like it. I am a 20 year veteran of thrift stores and I can just about run through one and especially in the clothes. But I have seen nothing like BK! Where Kiliki and I were working along, peeking under shelves and taking a glance at everything, BK was walking straight down the isle and spotting stuff as he walked. Where it would have taken us old tiki hounds about 45-60 minutes to scour this place quickly, I bet he could have done it in 10, or less! An amazing eagle eye. Luckily, he is also generous and doesn't just hoard it all up for himself. But I would not go looking and have some awesome piece be in the 3rd row over and expect to see it first. It's ain't gonna happen!

It was a light week for me...one cool amber ship's lamp just like the ones in the Molokai Bar, an original "Ticklish Affair" lobby card (the one with Shirley Jones and Red Buttons enjoying a Scorpion), a Harvey's Mai Tai mug, and 2 Daga surfers. I also found a WW2 Jap battleflag and 2 Bob Crane autographs! The ship's lamp is now part of the growing cluttered flotsam that is the ceiling of the Fabulous Kon Tiki Paradise Room..

I'm sorry I was busy during the weekend and have just gotten back to checking the posts now.

Vegastikidude - those menus are awesome! I didn't know that there used to be a Luau room at the old Hotel Del Coronado. Doctor Z and I collect items from the Polynesian (which later became the Latitude 20) in Torrance. I've got the Polynesian drink menu you have, but lost out on an auction for the dinner menu. Let me know if you want to trade it for a mug or another menu.

But best of all is that brochure to the Tiki Spa - Thanks for posting those photos. One of the nicest pieces of tiki paper I've seen in a while. Great score!

Like you, I've never seen one of those Chop-Chop mugs before, but it's very appealing. Since it's not a true tiki item, I bet I can pick one up reasonably on e-bay if I keep my eyes open.

Base - Nice hunting as usual. Game recognizes game. Doctor Z and I held our own garage-sale this weekend, so we didn't get to hunt for tiki in other folks' yards. (sigh). The only hunting I did was on e-bay, where I found a hidden Trader Vic's African-head mug for less than ten bucks.

Oh, THAT mug! I know it well. Not well enough to actually OWN one... Ran into the nefarious "kohalacharms" at a swap meet months ago - he'd just picked up TWO of them (large and small) in pristine condition, with lids, for about $30 total. Damn!

Here are some of our tiki finds from this weekend. We found all this stuff in No. Georgia while visiting my future in-laws. From top: Mai Kai Rum Barrel, Coco Joe's hapawood lighter with plaque on back (reads "Friendship Mission, 1973, Hawaii-Taiwan"), Behihana mug (not tiki, but I collect these guys), mask from Hawaii, Treasure Craft fish dish, Hula Formal sheet music, Trader Vic's coconut, Molakai mule from Sheraton, swizzle from the Kona Kai and unmarked coconut....plus several records...shown are a few of the better ones.
