Yea, thats for sure. As I stood there surveying the shelves I noticed that the paint was chipping off some of them.

weird....i was at dollar tree yesterday and didn't see any there. i was hoping they would have them again this summer so i could get a couple to put in my fish tank. i guess i'm gonna have to go back again soon and see if they have them out.

I agree, don't put them in your fish tank. They're cool but definitely not worth more than a buck. This is the 3rd year in a row Dollar Tree has offered these. This year they're also available in a lighter woodgrain color.

Also, check out this thread

poor packing from an ebay seller. butcher paper is an inadequate cushioning agent.

you could always do a test run in a quarantine tank/bowl with a goldfish or something. If the fish is okay after a week or two, move the tiki. If he's dead, well, you could use the poisonous water as a potential drink mixer.

Tiki trevor your masks are of Mexican origin, they make diablo masks and sometimes S. Pacific Ku inspired masks.

Found a Trader Vic's Fog Cutter mug at a thrift store for $3 today! Has a 1993 date on the bottom.

Found a demolished copy of Les Baxter's Caribbean Moonlight on Friday at the Salvation Army. It was only $1. Depsite the fact that the record will never be played (it's that bad), I couldn't bear to leave Les behind. It must have been good karma for me, cause later this weekend, I found a copy of Martin Denny's Paradise Moods in good shape, for $2. Also found a PMP mug, and a Coco Joe's Pele at an antique store. Sweet!

Here's a batch of tiki schwag I picked up in Portland earlier in the week:

Mugs L-R: Westwood, Orchids R-1 headhunter (with label on base), unmarked miniature green tiki mug/toothpick holder(Westwood?)

Swizzles L-R: unmarked mermaid, yellow Kona Kai tiki, 4 TV Menehunes, unmarked green tiki/paddle, Japanese restaurant/lounge.

Dang, I guess there's nothing left for us when we attend the NW crawl next week!

Great finds BaliHai! Thanks for posting some pictures

Nah, I found all that stuff at the first place I stopped, and I didn't have time to go anywhere else. There'll be plenty left for youse guys.

Just wish that I could've slipped my business trip up a week later so I could attend the crawl. Guess I'll have to console myself by spending 3 nights in Vegas...

Yes I was sad to hear you were just missing us! Have a great time in vegas!

In the past week I've found a koa whale cribbage board, a medium sized Frank Schirman black coral Wahine bust, a Peanut style PMP mug, some LPs, shirts, and a vintage stretched parchment lampshade.

So, this weekend, I found an LP called "Mai Tai Time" at the thrift store. The music is sort of organ mixed with, well, I don't know. It seems like the kind of thing you'd hear at a baseball game if the organist started playing "Tiny Bubbles". Weird. At the Long Beach Antique show yesterday, I found a Harvey's Hula Girl mug, ($3), a bamboo DAGA from the Sandgroper on Kauai, and a tiki farm mug that was from 2000. It's got a beach scene on, with a wahine. I can't find any pictures anywhere. I've got some mugs that need photos taken, so I'll try to include this one.
--Edit: I've got the photo uploaded on my ooga-mooga as a surfer mug. --
Also found a nice shirt for $8. Sweet!

I haven't been out looking for several weeks so I decided to hit some of my spots this weekend.

Marwal style hula girl bust, tiki S&P (say "Daytona Beach" on the backside) and a toothpick holder:

A feather lei in its original box with tapa pattern:

And though not exactly "tiki," I think it definitely is "exotica:" a kick ass TV lamp of a naked Balinese fire goddess (thats my theory anyway):

And to top it all off I got a sweet Paul Frankl rattan sofa for my lounge from Meg and Flounder. :)

My finds at the Long Beach Swap Meet

Aloha Jhoes Moai mug. There is a small chip on the chin, but it was either repaired during manufacture, or somebody did an excellent patch job!

A view of the front

A view of the back

Matchbooks from the Luau, Caliente Tropics, the Outrigger, and the Waikikian:

Postcards from the pre-renovation Hanalei - San Diego, Orchids Islands Hotel - Hilo (nice A-frame!), and an old postcard from Tahiai. The woman in the middle reminds me of one of the dancers at the Polynesian Spectacular at Sams Seafood.

Passenger manifest from the Maston Line ship S.S. Matsonia, dated May 1962

Found these little guys at the local Goodwill here in Charleston, SC a few days ago.
Mass produced, souvenir material I'm sure but was delighted to spot them.

You can see in this pic-on the bottom of the mid-sized one, it reads-"Bora Bora 1965". Looks like it was written with a ball-point pen so the authenticity of the inscription can't be guaranteed.

also found this wood/plastic relief map/clock at the local flea market-the old guy told me that it was a 'clectable' and that he needed 8 dollars for for it-he took 5 so I 'clected' it.

You can kinda see the 'reliefiness' of the islands on the map/clock here-

Here's a close-up of the tiki on the piece--if Shutterfly doesn't crop it for me like they tend to do.

Tikipedia--
Awesome finds! The Matson Lines Passenger List is truly excellent!

I didn't know that there used to be a Luau room at the old Hotel Del Coronado.

There was recent mention of it in this timeline from the San Diego Union-Tribune. Apparently it was around from 1940 to 1970.

I hit the tiki jackpot in Vegas last week. Here's what I managed to fit in my suitcase. There was a whole lot more that I wanted to buy, like wall carvings and large masks, that just weren't practical to purchase on this trip.

Here are some new finds in Maine:

From left to right,OoH R-74 ($2 flea market), Treasure Craft mug ($8 antique store), vintage ceramic hula girl with velvet lei ($1 estate sale - if you have any info on this piece, please let me know, it has a tag on the bottom but I forget what it said and its downstairs), tiki leilani salt shaker ($0.50 thrift shop), Chiki Tiki Morning After mug ($2 thrift shop), and a strange blue handled mug with raised tiki images ($1 thrift shop)

also, this pupu server (missing some of the "pineapple leaves") $5 garage sale.

My collection is coming together nicely, as these photos of my basement "Lava Lounge" indicate:

Now that the yard sales have started up again everythings coming up tiki.
I found these Witcoesque pineapples and a Mauri mask yesterday.

Slim pickens in this neck of the woods of late, but these matchbooks were a steal at under $.05 each! There were HUNDREDS of matchbooks at this estate sale, so my wife and I sat on the floor and went through every one! These were the best. Not ALL tiki, but . .

Two new vinatge mugs found by my junkin friend in a thrift store. This is the second and third Maryland tiki mug finds here.

Luau Hut OMC Ku like the Hawaiian Inn mug I have. Close inspection shows they are different sculpts of the same design. Same green out and orange inside.

Luau Hut hula girl. A rare hula gal showing her book and with nipples! Though these nipples have been abused a bit. More on the blog.

Wow, that's an awesome "insta-collection" of matchbooks.

I have one of these that I found at a thrift store here in Tucson. It's one of my favorite mugs, as the design really "pops" with definition.

Terrific find on both!

Dang! $5?!????!!!!! I just saw one of these at an antique store, and they wanted $50. The one I saw had more Pineapple leaves but it was pretty badly beat up. I had to pass for $50.

I just saw one at a flea market here with more leaves, but some other damage for $10. Perhaps between the two, I could have one good one for $15.

Ha! Exactly! The one you've got looks like it's in good shape, aside from being sparse on the leaves. I think even $10 is a pretty good deal, especially for the possible benefit of extra pieces in case you ever need them.

Here are my find for the weekend.

A bunch of match books. All for $2 bucks.

Castaway, Castaway, Islander, Trader Vics Beverly Hiils, Fireside, Tahitian Village, Don, Tony on the Pier, Sambo's (I also found a Sambo's wooden nickle, not shown).

A Daga bamboo mug from Rosies and a small 1/16oz plastic booze bottle, similar to the large one. Oh and a few eeks ago my brother found me 4 Leiani's for a buck each (Seen in the background).

Two finds down here at a Richmond VA estate sale. Have had very little luck down here in the south but every now and then run into something. Both items I picked up for 50 cents each. The first is a 1946 Calendar of Hawaii, photographs by Mike Roberts. In great condition, all 12 months no writing on any page.

Another image just because.

The other find was a Weird War comic book. I did not know this but according to this valuable research periodical. The Easter Island Moai are actually aliens. Who knew? Comic book is in pretty bad shape as you will see from the photos but I couldn't pass it up at 50 cents.

Enjoy and happy hunting.

T

Hey, I used to read this comic when I was a kid!! It was my favorite. I recall an edition that had soldiers in a tank fighting dinosaurs on a remote South Pacific island. The dinosaurs managed to survive the Cretaceous Period, etc. etc.

So how does the story end? Does the American soldier destroy the Alien Moai with a molotov cocktail made out of 151?

The nail baiting story ends with the Moai getting on a spaceship leaving the two soldiers to fight on. I better ending would have been for the Moai to kill both the men and use them as swizzle sticks. War what is it good for?

Found these while on a recent trip to San Marcos & Austin, TX.

L-R
Trader Vics Tiki Liki mug
2 Coffee mugs (Jard?)
Kon Tiki S&P shakers
another coffee mug (Quon-Quon?)
mis-matched Trader Vics S&P shakers

A friend brought me a new mug from Mackinac Island, MI!

It's a pretty generic tourist mug, but you gotta love finding tiki mugs on an island in the Great Lakes!

I found a resin Moai, similar to Slacks Ferret's Canadian Home Outfitters one, in an Australian bargain barn called "The Warehouse". This one is without the top knot and was labelled "antique statue"... yeah, whatever. I thought "ideal lamp" so that's what it became!

http://au.geocities.com/gromicmusic/moai.jpg

the tapa print fabric is also a recent find, however the tikis, books and pineapple serving plate have been in my posession for a while and are just for decoration in this photo.

I haven't been going out looking much lately, but today I got the urge and scored five mugs.

Hula girl mug from the "New China Inn," an Otagiri and an unmarked.

Underneath of this mug it says "NEW CHINA INN 1995 FLATBUSH AVE. BROOKLYN, N.Y. CL2-4700"

A mug from the Mai Kai and a moai mug from the Honolulu.

Brought these back to Georgia after spending a GREAT and RELAXING week in the windy city. The book is in great shape and I've already slapped mylar on the dust jacket. The most unique item was the ash tray from Shanghi Lil's. Is this a commonly found item? I tried to give the woman a dollar for it but she insisted that it was worth four. So I gave her four..damn. The Kon Tiki Ports ash tray was another cheap find that I found at a glance...nearly walked right by it. I had stopped only to fondle the lady's pineapple. Its just your typical Orchids of Hawaii lidded mug but I was on a role and gave the woman saw-buck for it.

H

Swamp, any chance if you can take a better picture of that Shanghai lil's ashtray?

Here is a close up of the Shanghi Lil's ashtray. How often does one of these surface? I plan to affix a plate hanger to the back and hang it behind the bar rather than use it to snuff a butt.

Thanks, it's a beauty..

Great finds Kono & Swamp Tiki!!

Here are my finds from my antiki hunt on Saturday:

49¢(the full size image is now unavailable for some reason)

Nice skirt for $8. It's made from mulberry bark shreds, and has a tapa cloth band around the top, and a woven shell band over that. Quite the find for a thrift store!

These two little fish floats were cheap, at $6 and $8 each. I found them at the Vanity Fair shop.

This is the Maori tiki I got for $8, he had a chip of the back of one of his feet, but he still stands and displays well. He has no makers mark, and is fairly crudely carved. I love him! That tongue is fantastic!

Hand painted nudie glass, this gal has quite the kitchy charm! I was so happy to bring her home. Vanity Fair also had one of a bride.

A copy of South Pacific, I haven't seen this one before and liked the graphics(49¢)

Gizeh Temple on Parade! This photo was taken here in Victoria on our Legislative Buildings front steps, I can't wait to listen! Everyone's dressed up in their best outfit & fez. I may take a better, closer photograph.(also 49¢) THIS JUST IN Song #3 on side one is the "Hawaiian Wedding Song"

(View my entire Antique Tour here)
