Found several nice size fishing floats or 'jugs' as they appear to be, in several colors. Only brought one home but I'm going back for more soon! They have an opening in the top that made it super easy to convert to a swag float lamp---sweeeet!

I am schizo in my collecting, but it all eventually works out, since the general public refers to that as "eclectic". I am new to collecting mugs. Just had my first tiki mug shopping experience....got 3 mugs, and then was side-tracked by some jadite (that I have been collecting for years). Please feel free to make comments about any of my lame purchases or decorum, I am still learning. :)

T

Slow out there but had some fun this weekend:

Things weren't looking too promising so I bought this. It's part of a set of six Chile Coasters.

Later in the day I came across this, a slightly different long Post Card from Bob Lee's Islander. I don't have a scanner but it's got amazing details in person.

Well things were looking up and then I got the big fella on the right in this shot. I was told he is from the Aku Aku but I don't know. I put a standard size one there for comparison. He's OMC and larger than the others I have.

Now comes the strange part. I didn't think the mug could be from the Aku Aku because I could swear the dealer said he worked at the Hilton and I don't remember there being a Hilton near the Cambridge Aku Aku. Well, today I found something interesting a couple of matchbooks & a TV ashtray. Note the Cambridge Address on the Aku Aku ones.

Flipped it over & look what was there!!! Hmmmmm....

Estate sale find today...all for 5.00 scheckles!

Approx 3 inches in length...What are these?

I have never seen a square float! Nor have I ever seen a white or milk glass float.

Anyone know about these?

Are these paper coasters from Don The Beachcomber? Found these in Dallas so it's probably safe to assume they came from the old Dallas location. First time I've ever found anything from there.

Generic tiki mug, looks like Jard Products, probably just a souvenir mug

2 Quon-Quon cups

Orchids R-86 bowl

PMP mug, unmarked. EXTREMELY worn...almost looks like he's been waiting outside for years. This is also smaller than similar PMP mugs and lighter weight.

Tikisgrl here's a similar coaster I found, the others in the pack were mostly sheep n other stuff, only 1 easter island in the pack.

Here are a few things I picked up last weekend thrifting. I spent all of maybe 15 bucks on the entire lot.

Found this for 99 cents

Hawaiian Monkey Pod bowls

Treasure Craft 1961 ceramic toothpick holder

Fork and Spoon

Salt and Peppers

And lastly....my new shell phone, well I wish!!

Well I decided to stop into this antique mall on the way home yesterday. Never had much luck in the antique malls but I figured "what the hell"... Well, I'm glad I stopped!
A pair of TV's Big Shots and the Tapa Punch mug from the Hilton Hawaiian Village. All 3 in pretty darn nice shape.

Aloha,
:tiki:

sputnikmoss, great finds there!

Your toothpick holder, if I'm not mistaken, was sold with a hors douvres platter that the pineapple and menehune sat on. I haven't found both together (or just the platter), but I thought there was a pic of one here in an old thread. The pineapple was to hold hors douvres (spam, cheese, etc.) on toothpicks. Just figured I'd mention that if you or anyone didn't know. I have the exact same one (sans platter), but interesting enough, I picked up a little 3-4 inch statue of the same menehune (in a standing position) a few months ago. Now I wonder where he belongs.

Anyone have any idea what I have found? It's a glazed black ceramic two faced tiki on a pedestal with a fitted lid. No glazing or markings on the bottom. I figured maybe it was an ornamental or souvenir container from a hawaiian candy company or something but have found nothing like it on Google or EBay or Tiki Quest.

Pictures to follow hopefully if I can remmeber how to post 'em.

Thanks

Sounds really neat though.

Got it thanks, will look there too.

Some thrifting finds from the past week. A Tiki Farm mug from the Hard Rock Cafe dated 2000, A set of Treasure Craft figures, A Daga Bamboo mug. Not a bad hall for the dead of winter in the northland!

Thanks for the info Unkle John, the quest begins! Oh I almost forgot about this one. My husband found this thrifting last year for $1.99. We just thought it was cute so we bought it. I did some research on the markings on the headstock and inside the body(TABU mark). Turns out it is made by the Aloha Manufacturing Co who made ukulele's in HAWAII from 1918-1935. Amazing!

T

Well, today went out thrifting for tunes at the half-price books...When I go to the original store in Alamo Heights, TX (A former San Antonio suburb that has been enveloped and swallowed by the city) I usually have luck...today was no exception! Exotica Vol. 2, Quiet Village, Paradise Moods, and then a HUGE number of "Hawaii Calls" albums. I picked up all the Hawaii calls ones, and the Denny albums :). Yay.

TT

I too have one of those Menehune toothpick tidbit holders. I also have the Menehune sitting on the edge of a pineapple shaped serving bowl.

Slow week...

However, I do have a couple questions for the experts here. The wood carving on the right apears to have been a lamp, at one time. The carving is exactly like (or styled after) the Trader Vic's menu (BOT pg 89)and the doors to the TV's in SF(BOT pg 95)
A similar lamp can be seen on page 163 of TikiQuest, but the quality of the carving is better than the one pictured in the book

Anyone have a picture of the lamp with the hardware? and
Does anyone know anything about this one?

Thanks
Buzzy

I scored 3 arthur lyman records on ebay Australia for AUS $10!

Description: 3 Hawaiian themed albums from the great Arthur Lyman, as follows:

"Call of the Midnight Sun", with Lyman's special tropical arrangements of Hello Dolly, Black Orchid and Girl from Ipanema.

"The Many Moods of Arthur Lyman", with native Hawaiian instruments, Latin and pop tunes.

"Bwana A"- Very moody, featuring tone pictures of Hawaii and a traditional Chinese bamboo flute.

What do you reckon? Is this a good score? Now I can find out what the hell tiki exotica is!

Some of my finds recently:

A scorpion bown from the Lanai, San Mateo. Heavy crazing, and what looks like a sub-glaze crack(?). The bowl itself is sound. It looks as if this bowl was used as a vase.

Being a huge fan of the Bali Hai, San Diego, I was very happy to find a cocktail napkin from there. Also got three matchbook covers from the Leilani Hut, Long Beach.

I also found an Aloha party and dinner dance invitation dated October 30, 1955.

I found this little gem yesterday for 1.99

Hello alll...
Been a while since I posted, but found some good stuff in the past few months and though I'd share...

The handled mugs are all hand glazed. Etched "Marilyn 1971" on the bottom of the clay.

The wooden piece on the right has wax in the top, so I guess it was a candle holder for a while.

These were fun to find. (Duh!)

Marked "Made in Hawaii-Monkeypod" on the bottom.

Closeup. Didn't have these two in the collection until now...
Whew!

Some really bright barkcloth shirts...

And the last one(s):

Set of four. Needed to change my shorts after I found these babies...

a find im quite sure that will remain a staple in any house i live in its made in morocco but the motife was fantastic

So now I know where all the good stuff in Central Florida went... Actually, I think I know where you found that Tiki Bob and the blue one.

Congrats. Nice finds.

Thanks, man. But now I feel guilty. To be honest, I have not been searching actively since the Hukilau. So ya'll had your chance!

I hadn't seen the blue Fisherman's Wharf mug before. Man, it's heavy! I couldn't resist the Hawaiian Village Tiki Bob, either. I am a sucker for Floridana of the tiki sort. It has a slight hairline crack, but I won't be drinking out of it anytime soon.

Found this polyresin tiki at the Hobby Lobby store. 37" and seems to be good quality. I took a couple of pics to show the grain and detail.

I picked up one of those too...waiting for spring to plant him in the garden.

ps - NICE Leeteg back there.

Just returned from 2 weeks in LA and the Bay Area, my carryon bulging with tiki schwag. I would've filled up an entire suitcase if I could've afforded the ridiculous prices most dealers were asking. Fortunately, I found a couple of bargains at flea markets.

L-R: Al Harrington Ku mug with handle, Forbidden Island signature mug, Mark Thomas Outrigger Moai, Harvey's Lake Tahoe Hula Girl mug, wooden tiki statue, Harvey's Sneaky Tiki mug, Daga Warrior mug.

I also found this beautiful hand-painted mug from Norwegian Cruise Lines that features everyone's favorite finny Hawaiian fishy, the Humuhumunu:

Here's a better look at the tiki carving. It's clearly female, and looks Rarotongan. Any clues as to its identity would be much appreciated.

I'd guess it's Marquesan.

Definitively from the Marquesas.

Yes, after doing a little research, I agree. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any information regarding which goddess the statue represents, although she might be Atanea, goddess of the dawn.

Got skunked last week, and yesterday, so this is actually today's stuff, but it's really two weeks worth of stuff, or after friday, three weeks worth of stuff. If I get skunked next week, then it's all I got this month. If I quit now, it's a lifetimes worth, and it's not that impressive.
Tiki and pushing the realm of tiki finds:

The cocojoes lighter was buried under about twenty other lighters. I was only looking for a replacement top, and bingo!

Hawaii and "pirate" finds

I usually don't buy in the wild mugs, but it was only a quarter...

Here are closeups of the silver Maori spoons

and (Maori inspired) Gator?

Fairmont Tonga Restaurant Matches

Orange Orchids Hula Girl & Huke Lau Mug, never seen this one before from there.

Found these out in the wild when I left the house this morning:

the mugs have two faces on each one...

and are marked with a TLC.

Anyone recognize these?

Hey Buzzy, Nice finds!! I like the Hawaii clock! I've seen quite a few really tacky looking versions of that one but yours is really cool with the raised Islands and different colors! Good one!
As for your mugs, the double faced ones were available at some of your local ceramic studios. They are known as a hobbyist/hobby mugs and that is the artists initials on the bottom. You see lots of different colors and finishes of these and varying qualities. Some also are available with handles on the sides. I would guesstimate that it is from the 1970's but it is hard to say. Some molds are still available today. Unless that is a mug made for The Learning Channel (TLC) but I doubt it! Again, cool finds! TabooDan

Got this Luau Room rocks glass as a B-day gift. Never seen one before. The second pic is a close up of the side of the glass.

Some Maori items found in the wild today, to close out the weekend.

Took a couple looks to figure out it was a bird...

Thanks for the info on the mugs TabooDan. That's why I love Tiki Central. Makes sense, because now that I look, each signature is slightly different. Mystery solved, in record time too.
The Hawaii clock is actually all black, like fake lava. I took that picture outside, so you see the reflection of the blue sky and giant green tree from my yard. Here's a couple closeups:

I never find much, but yesterday I did pretty well. Ugly upholstery, but you can't win 'em all.

Nice find spy! You need to pull the plastic off the bar and celebrate. Great group of furniture.

I am always out and about...I guess it is time to share some of my finds from the past couple of weeks...

Found these six Kahiki mugs from Ohio in Roseville CA...Wish they could talk!

Odd handled Lelani mugs, handles made to look like twisted wood, never seen these before?

Bali Hai Ashtray, smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Finally, I found a "Tiki Bob's" mug in the wild!

Hawaii Kai, the third one I've bought.

Carved tiki from Oroville CA, can anyone help with orgin?

Tonga Room San Francisco Snack Menu 1940's.

Finally to round the past two weeks...Sam's Seafood and Hawaiian Village Menu circa 1966!

Gotta go,
Psycho Tiki D (I know I am and I practice everyday).

FYI for Sac folks.....there is a new Salvation Army Thrift store in Roseville, maybe you great shoppers will find something good there. It is on the southwest side of Antelope and Hwy 80. I am not so lucky and typically have to shop antique stores.

HOK

Some Swapmeet finds from Sun. 02/04/07 Witco Tiki head $5.00
Tiki shot glasses 2 for $3.00 Aloha, Freddie

I don't know if this constitutes an actual "find" however,

IT TOOK MY DAUGHTER THREE DAYS TO FIND ONE OF THESE AT DISNEYLAND!!

Nevermind she kept asking the store clerks for the "Tiki Ceramic Building"!

What is a Dad to do? You try to explain, send money and print pictures (left at home because she "knew" what I was talking about).

Oh well, I did get one, right?

Psycho Tiki D (I know I am, partially because of my children).

Not having any great luck finding mugs, got this little guy today:

And this plate, any thoughts on this place? Anybody ever heard of it? The dealer had no idea but she thought it was at least an East Coast restaurant.

There is a Cathay Hut restaurant in Lewiston, ME. They have a polynesian menu, and serve drinks in tiki mugs, but the name is a bit different.

The year has gotten off to a pretty good start. Who would have thought you could find 2 of these here in NZ? The condition is superb - I just washed some gunk out of the bottom of each which I'm pretty sure was the remains of the drinks that were served in them.

Lots of other acqusitions, mostly retail purchases but the odd find at a good price. Unfortunately Maoriana/Kiwiana is way too popular here now and the prices have gone sky-high.
1970s(?)Maori Maiden and Maori Chief wall plaques:

Tiny Tang decanter, just over 4" high:

Souvenir moai from Rapa Nui, about 15" tall and beautifully carved:
