I don't think we can top SDT's finds but the Mr and I picked up this bowl. It looks like a Bumatay but the heads are slightly different from the one pictured in the BOT. Anyone have any extra info.... Sven?????? There are no markings and we definitely believe it to be old.

Actually, it does not look vintage to me. It looks like something Gecko made.

Yes, it does look like Gecko's bowl but Gecko's design is very reminiscent of the Bumatay design and Gecko usually signs his work. We are also about 99% sure that it is vintage. Does anyone know if there were markings on the original Bumatay bowls?

Cheeky Half, That glaze looks fairly contemporary to me (although I like the design) I agree with Swanky that it's probably newer...after S.T.D.'s finds it's hard to be impressed!

It has to be a Gecko, though I don't know why there is no mark. That fish head is his design, the glaze is very contemporary, and that detail is just killer. All that adds up to a Gecko. Nobody else does a glaze like that and multiple glazes and the variation, etc. If you look at the other fish head footed bowls on Ooma-Gooma, you'll see they are all different and since the bottom of this bowl is very visible, I'd say no mark was left to keep it clean.

I may be wrong, but I believe Gecko reproduced his mug design from a vintage one he had in his own collection. I remember him posting pictures of his older version before he created the "Mount Bumatay". Sven had told him there was a smaller size of this vintage bowl as well, so I think he might have the most knowledge about it. The blue glaze looks vintage to me, but I'm no expert.

I have checked with the big G and he said that our bowl looks just like his vintage bowl, no markings on his either. Unfortunately he doesn't have any more info than that. The mystery continues..........

Then that is one of the nicest vintage bowls I have ever seen. You just do not see that kind of detail and that color in the glaze. That's extremely nice.

There actually are three original sizes of this vintage (I would say 70s) design:

The wide one, which is in the Book of Tiki, page 184
The medium one (the one posted on the previous page, and below), which will be in Tiki Modern
AND the mug sized, narrow one, which I don't have, and which was used as a model for Gecko's mug

They are all without restaurant markings (or maker signatures), and thus were probably produced for home use. The conical shape of the medium bowl, and the grey stone color of the godheads suggests that they were meant to depict Aztec idols. I have never seen this blue version though, which is weird, since the concept seems to clearly depict fiery hot lava dripping onto panicking idols. Maybe the ones on Cheeky Half's bowl are afraid of drowning from sea water... :)

The lava glaze is truly amazing, and it was those vessels that inspired Gecko to develop his wonderful "exploding Volcano" bowls.

Idols? .....I thought they were fish! (which can certainly be considered idols)...after many years of not catching many,(fish) perhaps it was my lack of proper respect that caused my bad luck!.....those many years (being I'm 60) of fishing and antique dealing also make it a bit harder to wrap myself around something from the 70's or 80's being vintage.....but I love this piece no matter and would have gladly scooped it should I have been so lucky!

Certainly true for Tiki. But you have that impression also because you're in America, where the heyday of consumption, and innovative modern design for it, was the 50s and 60s, and the 70s sort of went either alternative or totally tacky (followed by the browning of America in the 80s), while Europe was taking over in the design innovation field.

In Europe, there is a bigger antique collectors' market for 70s designed objects, because there is more of that available than stuff from the 50s, where they were still affected by the war, and the economic growth was less exuberant than in the U.S. at the time. That is talking in General terms, of course, there is also some great stuff from these decades on both continents.

Dont' know if this counts as found or not, but I just wanted to share the new Munktiki volcano bowl with everyone. Picked this sucker up last weekend in Carmel when I visited Munktiki world headquarters! Its huge and the ouside of the bowl looks like a gigantic coconut! An awesome peice! The picture is of me and my wife testing out the bowl with a triple Mai Tai...yum!

While scrounging the vintage stores today I ran across this little guy high on a shelf..I talked the owner into letting me have him for $25.. I've seen a blueish green version on OM, but I haven't seen one in this color..As of yet.

Being able to share items like this and learn more about them is what keeps TC great. Of course meeting the TC members and finding out how truely nice they in person keeps the flame burning in my super cool - wish I had one - Munktiki volcano bowl, metaphorically speaking.

I got the large shot glass because it has a rendering of Coco Joe himself on it, and he is receiving a lapdance from a hula girl.

Found in the jungle wilds of Michigan. This anatomically correct Teko Teko has great detail. Big too (tall that is) 17" tall and heavy. Carved in New Zealand by Raiona. Never seen one this nice or big around here before. Now he protects my lounge and cargo.

Hello this is my first post on this thread. Ive been collecting for about 3 years. Mostly thrift store collecting until recently. These are my tiki thrift store finds for the year so far. I paid between .59 and 3.95 for these.

Wow you all have such great skills in the wild. It has been a while since I have found anything good. happy hunting.

And an old bamboo aquarium with a matching stand:

All the electrical hardware in it is old two prong stuff.

It is made in three detachable pieces:The stand, the aquarium, and the roof

It doesn't have a tiki on it, but it's old and has bamboo, so I think it qualifies as a tiki find.

Just what every girl needs a cement Easter Island Head! Lot's of finds but I'm too lazy to post them all. But, I was excited about this big guy. Traveled all over today & found this guy not 5 miles from home (sorry Granite). Hip Original I found last week for size comparison.

Gecko has an aquarium like that as a center piece in his home. Its full on vintage mugs and looks awesome. Great find.

Found this at an antique shop last weekend.

Having gone to Sam's Seafood and Hawaiian Village many times in the 60's as a kid, it stirred something deep within me. The menu is in really great condition - including a small cigarette burn on the back - ah those were the days. Must be from the early 60's because the interior of the menu has snapshots and a story showing Sam's Seafood and Hawaiian Village from 1920's, remodel, and then the fire that destroyed it in 1959. Indicates the perseverance of the Katsaris family to keep the place going.

I'll post some interior shots if anyone wants a looksee.

Sam's Seafood Menu from about 1962 - here are some more photos. I'm not doing this justice but it might strengthen the Mai Tai debate. Do you think Sam's might want this in their collection for the re-opening?

There have really been some great finds lately. This thread keeps the wind in my sails so I have the strength to visit the next flea market.

Here are a few finds that I and my Wahine have found in the last few weeks. Truthfully, my Wahine scored the most. For your viewing pleasure, we have a Cocojoes tiki statue, a HIP hula girl ash tray, two swizzle sticks (Trader Vics and Don Ho), a tiki nut cracker and the coolest item a book entitled: "The Hawaii Book - Story of Our Island Paradise" by Verne LLoyd. The book was published by J.G. Ferguson Publishing Company Chicago copyright 1961. It is a compilation of selected articles and stories relating to the history of Hawaii.

Terrific vintage Sam's menu - thanks for the photos, but what's up with the drink garnishes? It looks like a dandelion is growing out of that Mai Tai! Somebody get Sam's some herbicide.

Maybe it's some sort of 'Jungle Fungle'.
