NO! it is not a stolen door handle

Careful how you word your questions there, teakey. I think you are mixing that up with the Aku Tiki Inn Daytona doorhandles, something completely different.

That door handle is a real prize, because it is the same casting than the Luau doorhandles, which ended up at the Hanalei Hotel's Islands restaurant. They depict the Luau logo Tiki from the menu, salt and pepper shakers and table lamps. It is likely that all Kon Tikis had those door handles.

Kate, what a funny shirt! The artist really took the concept of the "Big Ears" to heart. Thank you for zooming in.

The way those Luau Tikis catch the flashlight on top of that Hippo stool, it makes them look like pure GOLD ! :)

the door handles came from kon tiki cleveland. solid brass and heavy , i'd bet 10lbs.

these paint by number pics are fantastic. the best job i have ever seen in paint by number.they are signed and dated 1961. i got them at an estate sale

Since I was very ill this past weekend, I only got out one day. Here are my meager finds for the week, minus the two shirts I picked up two weeks ago...

Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant postcard.

Aloha Motel 7500 Biscayne Blvd. Miami Florida postcard.

United Airlines Hawaii postcard.

Cool mug, small chip, no worries.

Westwood tiki mug.

Little things I found...Kon Tiki and Trader Vic's swizzle sticks, metal tiki necklace charm and a couple of labels; Honolulu Broom Company and Happy Isles Brand Hawaiian Pineapple.

I also look for vintage Hawaiian shirts with tikis.

But then again, I also look for vintage Hawaiian shirts.

sorry. all this time everyone says "pics?"" where are the pics?" "lets see some pics" so yesterday i got a new comp. and learned to post pics, so now i am just making up for lost time.

Is that a Kahiki fish hanging lamp on the table?

could be , i have about 10 of them all around the house and out in the out side tiki bar.about half of them came from fla. that is the only one i have with the glass sides ,all the others are the shell lamps,orchids of hawaii.

Some nice stuff! If your booth would be in LA, it would be cleaned out in a matter of days.

hey john,how are you doing? the fire place is red ,and it is a real wood burner so you can do wood,gas,or electric. i have a electric log set up in it now for display. i just put in my booth wed. and i've got 895.00 on it.

Just bought this unglazed home-made "tiki" mug at an estate sale. I've never seen this pattern before. It's 8 inches tall. Do I have the ONLY ONE?? (Actually, I bought two.) Got an unglazed Moai mug, too, so the next question is, do I glaze them and fire 'em or leave them "in the white"?

Hi SilverLine,

That's the Johnny Sens "Frankenstein" tiki. The mug is usually attributed to Johnny Sens of New Orleans, but I was never sure if he initially created the design and later molds, or whether he used an existing mold. The mold seems to have been used quite a bit by other hobbyists as well and often turns up in the Southern U.S.

Thanks Sabu! There were a several molds at the sale (and a kiln and other equipment) but I didn't find one for this mug. Maybe it's worth another look.

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this.... I picked up still sealed 8mm films of the Kodak Hula show Part 1 & 2 from Colorama Productions Hawaii for a few bucks each at a local shop today. Also picked up a cool brown Tiki candle about 8" tall with Hawaii down the back for fifty cents at the local SA thrift shop on half price day last week, lol.

and not tiki related, but cool anyway....

MAORI meeting house door knocker?

Nice Maori finds Tiki David!! There used to be a New Zealand named Restaurant here in the Mid-1970's and it was called "Haere Mai" which is the same writing on your knocker which means "Welcome" in Maori I believe.

One stopped at one place today, here is what I found...

Three green Maori mugs marked with silver and blue labels "Fred Roberts Company, San Francisco" "Made In Japan"

I bought a bunch of menus from the 50's along with a really cool lamp. This Trader Vic's Oakland and San Francisco Menu was with them!

Also found this Surfer Girl Latitude 20 Torrance CA mug.

Not bad for one stop!

I wasn't familiar with those! Man, they are much nicer than that common R1 Orchids mug I have:

I never really liked that bugger, and now I know why: I bet it is a knock off from the Fred Roberts design. There the tongue and the mouth are sculpted much better and actually allow one to see the Maori carving it was based on!

I like these so much, I felt inspired to search for it in my Oceanic Arts library, but had no luck. The wide, over-extended tongue reminded me of the Maori spear....

Went back to the estate sale that yielded the unfired Johnny Sens "Frankenstein" mugs in the hopes of finding molds. Success! Didn't find any molds for the Frankenstein mug (no surprise) but DID find the mold for the Duncan Moai! I'm stoked! Now off to the Creating Tiki forum to learn how to do this. I see dozens of Moai mugs in my future!

the jeckl and hyde mugs were made specifically for the restaurant in new york of the same name. (they may have been a chain)...they are not old, but the place is really cool with all sorts of monster movie stuff all around with working dioramas and displays.....kinda like eating dinner in a haunted mansion movie set or a planet hollywood with only monster movie memorabilia decorating the place......don't know if they are still around (anyone here from nyc?)..the mugs were sold as sounveniers and i believe they came with the drink you ordered if you ordered a zombie...or maybe it was the headhunter?? don't know.....it was in 1996 when i went there.
