Goddamn Tipsy! Find of the year! (seethes with jealousy)
I will trade you a blanket, some tobacco and a handful of shiny beads?

MAN Tipsy! That's incredible! But I wanna know the WHOLE story. Where? How? And HOW did you keep from passing out when you found them?? I LOVE hearing the STORY of this kind of find!

1

Probably picked them up for $2.00 for both-you -Xlnt score Dave.

Yes lets here the story! did you pinch yourself to see if you were dreaming but found that due to the adrenalin rush your skin was numb?

..my skin was numb cause i had already been drinking.....kidding.....but yeah, i was first drawn to some other mugs i saw , then i realized i already had those....they are kinda common mugs........then i turned to my left and saw these on a lower shelf...one behind the other...they were selling them as a pair. I thought "these have to be replicas..there's no way these could be the real thing"...then i thought "please let these be from hala kahiki!"....I turned them over to look.....no hala kahiki markings...but when i saw the omc sticker still on the bottom, i new these were the real thing!!

I found this statue at an antique place by my house...don't know too much about it, and I haven't personally seen any like this. It says Pele Products, Volcanic Industries of Hawaii. I was wondering if anyone knows what it's deal is or if anyone has one like it (I'm sure somebody does!)

Then I found this Dental Tiki Farm mug. It has some crazing, but hey, they had to start somewhere!

What a cool statue, now THAT really looks like it was "born out of Lava". And the label logo is really cool too. I bet Buzzy and the others from the Coco Joe's gang know other examples from that maker, I had never heard of it. It would be interesting to line up a list of company names that at one point or another tried to follow the success of Coco Joe's and Hip in Hawaii, it's adding up to quite a few.

HOK

Looks like a variation of the above, about 11 1/2" tall...

Freddie

Wow Freddie, yours has better "forms"! :D
So how about a list of Coco Joe's "train jumpers":

HIP
PolyArt
Pele Products
........
......

Who else do we know off?

Frank Schirman.

HOK

Pacific Fine Arts
Waitiki
Polystone

First, what I didn't buy:

The middle guy looked to be a homemade plaster casting, flanked on either side by Coco Joes. I have both of the Joes so I selflessly left them behind for Brandomoai to find...

Nah, I left them behind because they were too expensive - if they'd been a decent price I woulda snapped them up.

Two little liquor bottles from Hawaiian Distillers - surfer dude and hula gal. I walked around with these guys for a while before putting them back... also too expensive. Value Village should have a new slogan: "Antique store prices in a thrift store setting"

What I did buy:

Treasure Craft hula girl $2.99 at good ol' Goodwill

"To preserve this lovely wood finish..." Huh??

Yeah, I saw them and I thought the same thing. Although, I did end up picking up the Coco Joe tiki, only to find it cracked and glued after I got home! So I got ripped off. Luckily, I've found some pretty good finds in the last couple of weeks that make up for it! Post soon to follow...

TIT

Vintage tiki punchbowl and seven matching mugs.

B

A few things I picked up a week or so ago - had to console myself after losing out on the gravel art Moai on ebay :(

Harvey's Lake Tahoe mug

Witco pineapple

My personal fave - Treasure Craft tiki head ashtray

and this little cutie - another Treasure Craft ashtray

Gotta wonder if the seller is a TC member and will see these and think "SUCKER"! LOL I don't care - I love this stuff!

TD

you love treasure craft?

Why? You got a problem with that?

And furthermore - it's wet blankets like you that make a lot of us want to reach out and slap someone. Can't ANY of us be excited about the things we find? Does EVERYTHING have to be some mega-expensive "exclusive" item that only "those in the know" should have? Stop trying to rain on our parade.

Some Treasure Craft stuff is OK. Personally, I only collect his signed pieces. If it doesn't say 'Antoine Treasure' on the back, I turn up my nose.

tiki in tx -Is this you the winner of this auction, I assume it is.I was working and missed the
closing or I would have bid on it for sure.Very sweet set-congrads on your xlnt score.
I had this set years ago, and regretfully sold them several years ago.
I still don't know who the mfg. was of that set.Do you see any makers marks on the bottom?
If you ever need a beneficiary for the set -let me know-hah hah!LOL

What is with you people? Tiki David asked a question and Beadtiki got her beads in a bunch and flew off the handle twice! Maybe you should stop by a warehouse store and pick up a family size box of moist towelettes because the spaz family is who be should be doing the wiping.

Sincerely

B

If I "misheard" what Tiki David said, then I apologize for flying off the handle. The "tone" sounded incredulous to me, as it seems so many people are only too happy to make us new folks seem like fools. I don't know much about what's hot and what's not, but I liked the look of my pieces and wanted to share. That's all.

T

This is the problem with online forums, it's so hard to tell what people mean when they post something. In daily life it's easy to read voice inflections and facial expressions to determine the meaning, but in forums you don't have that to go by. Did he say "you love treasure craft?" as in "Wow, finally someone else who appreciates it like I do!" Or did he mean "Why in the world would anyone collect THAT?" Or maybe something in-between. Only he knows for sure, maybe he can clarify what he meant. Certainly if he meant the latter then you are entitled to feel insulted by it. Anyone who collects anything lives in a glass house and shouldn't go down that road. I don't like Witco, but clearly a lot of people do and I can at least respect that and share their joy when they find that certain piece in a thrift store that made their day. And who knows, tastes change. What a person doesn't like today they may suddenly find interest in later. How many people were collecting Witco 10 years ago? I bet people were throwing it in the trash then!

. . and now we return you to "Tiki Finds" already in progress . .

Yes, I know this ain't tiki, but it's from the Hawaii Hilton, is really nicely done, and was cheap. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it. I'm thinking Chinese New Year centerpiece/mug? A little taller than the average mug, hollow back.

Anybody?

B

I really like that dragon mug/vase. I would definately put that in with my stash o' mugs. Don't know anything about it though. Cool find.

Nice find Silverline. The Hilton Hawaiian Village had a series of those mugs... The Dragon, King Kamehameha, a Hula Girl and I believe a Volcano too.
Aloha,

Nice bar. Very classic, streamlined design. I dig it.

I found this cocktail recipe set at a garage sale today for 50 cents. The copyright says 1977.

TD

does anyone know what these are?

T

Here are my latest non-ebay tiki finds.

A few matchbooks. Has anyone ever heard of Hidden Harbor in Phoenix? And a 1960 postcard from the City of Refuge.

Not a ton of shirts this week. Things were kind of pricey, so I had to leave some behind.

I went a little crazy with the menus. Several had some serious condition issues, and I bought them anyway. I have a hard time resisting menus. (The Christian's Hut and Islander are in pretty nice shape though.)

Wow, all those menus NOT on e-bay? Great find, Kate. I have never been able to use that Hidden Harbor matchbook, though it is so cool, and never heard anything about the place, unfortunately. It looks like a 50s joint that was not around for long.

Is that Christian's Hut from Waikiki, or from Balboa? I still am hoping to find out about the original owners of Christian's Hut one day, all I know from Ray Buhen is that they were Hollywood agents in the day.

K

Pardon a quick thread detour - Christian's Hut in Waikiki? Where was it, and when was it in operation?

Don't know anything about this Christian's hut, but here are my most recent finds from the last month or so:
Two more "Suehiro" mugs, a geisha (Rocky Mountain antique mall) and samurai (Goodwill). I know these are not not really Tiki but I love them. Small PMP Peanut mug(Rocky Mountain antique mall). Two Daga surfer mugs (Value Village). And a Harvey's Lake Tahoe Sneaky Tiki mug (Goodwill) which I was so excited to find! I know these are really common, especially in California, but not here!

Generic, unmarked tiki found at Goodwill and the aforemention Coco Joe tiki from Value Village. See below for close-up of the crack through it which I didn't noticed until I got home. Total rip-off. Sweet Daddy Tiki knows how much I paid for it, but I won't tell anyone else...

It's from the Corona Del Mar location.

..is this a trick question?? they are plastic puffer fish, silly....

I'd have to say the beginning stages of a pair of new hanging lamps.

.no way...the plastic is too soft and it's not translucent enough...make lamps out of these and your tiki bar will burn to the ground...

I'm guessing they're like Bigmouth Billy Bass and they sing some drolly appropriate song.

TD

wrong, wrong, wrong.

TD

they are squirt guns.
