Great Drum Mug & tiki room column!

I found this at a local antique shop for $25 so I was thrilled. I never expected to run across one of these in the wild.

this weeks score of free loot!!! once againg these items are from the house I work in that has the amazing museum collections of NW school art, studio pottery, Russel Wright and ashcraft furniture, and japanese antiques.

the prizes i get t bring home are things that dont fit, and or there is no room.
So I got a fabulous rattan table with 4 matching chairs. with a turqoise and black mosaic tile top. and an Enchanted Tiki Room statue for my yard. When it was in the truck I thought it was about 5 ft, but its really about 4 ft. still pretty big and VERY HEAVY!!!!

Freddieballsomic,is this the one?
i do not know anything about it.
how about anyone here?

Tiki finds from the past week and a half.

The Planet Rooth mugs and some Moai mugs.

A few cheap mugs, 2 Trader Dicks and a lava figure.

paper, paper, paper and more paper.

Tiki Shaker - would you be willing to post a close-up of that Coconut Radio brochure or photo? I love vintage pics of girls & tikis and I haven't seen that one before.

Sabu

I found this rattan piece a t a flea market for $60 today, so I was pretty psyched! I am not sure exactly what it is, it looks like a bar cart to me, but who knows, it has no handle. Maybe it's just shelving.

Tim, that pic is from Tahiti. A very elaborately carved tiki, sort of "early Crazy Al" style. Also, that cartoon of the tourist couple holding a Tiki in the grouping below that is a mid-century modern gem we should see. :)

Here is a close up of the Coconut Radio mag.

Sorry about the poor image quality. My camera isn't doing too well and I don't have a scanner. I wish I did because I would scan the insides of this Coconut Radio. Has anybody heard of this? It's a groups magazine and they considered themselves " Te Mauhoa No Tahiti (The Friends of Tahiti).

Here is the close up of the other brochure's illustation.

And here are pics of even more paper items I purchased today. (I seriously hit the jackpot this weekend.)

This Latitude 20 degree Torrance California Bucket was in a Dallas/Ft Worth Antique Mall. It was marked down from $25.00 to $5.00. Oh happy day!

The same day I didn't drive far to find this Volcano Bowl. Almost free. Oh wow! I'm not sure what it is, but it sort of matches some OTC mugs. Does anyone recognize it?

Not a bad weekend. Picked up a few items.
WWII era Hawaii pillowcase & hanky:

Finally scored some albums! It's been a long time!

A neat pair of hand-carved Moai bookends:

Can't wait to listen to the new tunes!

These mugs probably don't qualify as Tiki, but I had to show them anyway! Hope you don't mind!

I guess there's one more with the girl diving into the mug. I guess I'll see if that one shows up on Fleabay.

I found this framed fabric at the flea market yesterday. It was so gorgeous, I just couldn't leave it there.

Bad news:

Slow week...

A big and small coco joe's hapa wood tiki:

A little wooden Easter Island Kava kava guy:

Or its a praying beatnik with a banana hat...

A battery operated tiki fountain:

Good news:
I saved some money.
Buzzy Out!

Very sweeeet fabric Kate! You must put in hours and hours in on the hunt.

Big K - Tiki or not, that is one ULTRA COOL mug set! I love the way that "combined" they tell a story...or show a simple action continued. Just wonderful stuff!

Aloha Tiki-Kate! That's some high dollar fabric you got there. The Bishop Museum had some exhibit back in the day and I think the print shows some of the pieces. The shirts came in a long sleeve version. I've seen two different designer tags for this print. Sorry, memory shot.... Filslash might know more..... Freddie

I used to have this same statuette, but less reddish and a little darker brown. It had a sticker on the back that said simply "Morro Bay, Calif." Have no idea if the concave back served a purpose or not, but the guy took a tumble and proved to be more fragile than he looks...

Here are my finds from the annual "barn sale" they hold at the county fairgrounds.
Two bamboo tables with glass tops in great shape. My favorite of the loot.

Some records.

I am thinking of making this weird boat basket into a hanging lamp of some sort. And I can't pass up bags of shells for $1.

I know not tiki but a little teisco amp with tremelo.

Some more books:

Everything for about $60.

The swap meet gods have smiled upon me.

Lumi, West Sepik, Toricelli Mtns. PNG Battle Shield.

This is BIG at 38.5" H x 27" W. The dealer gave me very little history but I will attempt to get more info. Definitely VERY OLD and by what I've been able to research, probably pre-20th Century. The picture hanging wire is even old, so this probably hung out on someone's wall for decades. The carving is really nice in that it was done in a high relief with scrolls incised within the relief. Most of the handle is gone but what remains also shows major age. Note the really nice rattan lugs with fine braiding. It has a couple of long cracks along the grain, but they seem to have occurred when the shield was green or possibly due to battle damage long ago. There is noticable solidified sap within those cracks.

good show Squiddles!
you got an antenna for this kinda stuff!

Hello Mr. Happy!

I usually use that term in a more fun/ intimate fashion.

I bought the Moai mug on the left today thinking it was an unmarked OMC even though it seemed different. Got it home and compared to a marked OMC and this guy is more than little different. Standard OMC Moai on the right, new unknown Moai on the left. Anybody have any ideas on who the maker is for the contestant on the left??

I found these New Zealand Maori items at an estate sale today. The longboat is 14". The mask is 4'3" tall and has boars tusk for a nose piercing and embedded shells around the eyes, nose, mouth, chin and cheeks. The previous owners were missionaries. Does anyone have any info on this type of mask?

That mask is amazing! I'm pretty sure it's from the Sepik River region in Papua New Guinea, but other people could tell you with more certainty.

found these today,

nineteen inches tall, anyone know of 'LINDNER' '41 ?

and this 'bad boy' along with his necklace, which may or may not belong to him....?

A few things I have managed to find the last month or so.

3 Bottles from Hawaiian Distillers. The small pineapple full of Rum (Dated 1983) is ceramic and the Tiki is a plastic bottle full of Macadamia Liqueur (with moldy insides!!). The tall Tahitian(?) Dancer in the center is about 11" tall and full of Rum. Made of ceramic and is dated 1985.

Cool black Maori Mask carving which is about 12" tall. The Tiki statue carving on the right is about 8" tall and is stamped "Jungle Jim Kau Hawaii" on the bottom. Nice carving, anybody know him??

This pretty unique hut is a lamp made from shells and soldered together with brass. It is quite large and measures about 13" tall and about 10" wide and about 8" deep. Almost a perfect house for G.I. Joe's! The windows open along with the door and a bigger panel opens in the back where you can get the to the bulb. Very well made.

Too bright a bulb in there right now but you get the idea.

One of my favorite finds lately is this last item which is something I haven't seen before. It is just like the OMC Skull Mugs that you see but instead of the mug, it's a bank. Same size as the mugs just no handle and a thicker base. I was pretty stoked to find it! Love that glaze!!

That's it for now. Happy Hunting!!

OK, I should have been posting finds here for a while now. But to late for all of that.. So I'll start with items we found this weekend.

A Parrot mug from the Hawaiian Cottage with the original label on the bottom.

A piece treasure craft of a dancing man, marked Hawaii 275.

Another Orchids Of Hawaii Bamboo mug.

A nice 10" with a cheese cake cover. A nice set of six smoke mirror glasses with rack and ice bucket. And last but not lease the Hawaiian table cloth with a set of six napkins that all the items are sitting on.

Again more blurry pictures,sorry

Because of the crawl, I had to limit my time looking the past couple of weekends...

Daga coconut mug from the "The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel" Waikiki, Hawaii.

Vintage "Made In Japan" Hula Girl Salt and Pepper.

Okolehoa Liquor's tiki mug.

Unmarked Ku Volcano bowl, consensus amongst fellow collectors was this is a Louis B Ceramics bowl?

I'd vote for Louie B as well. Gecko produces a bowl just like yours which is based on a Louie B design.

Gecko gave me this a couple of years ago....Really good chance it was originally from the Louie B line... Gecko acquired many of their old molds when they retired...

Some finds from this weekends swapmeets....

Koa based, giant clam shell lamp...no light on, nice
iridescent shimmer

White light on, low

Red light district :)

The clam shell shade is made of some kind of soft plastic, unmarked and different from the clam shell serving bowls that you see around (no molded mounting base). Over all height is 25"T and 15"W. The person that I got this from just updated the plug end and it has an inline on/off switch with a dimmer at the bulb holder. I'm thinking maybe from a Hotel?

A print of "The City of Refuge, Hawaii" in an old frame, roughly 23"T X 19"W

Aloha, Freddie

Strangely, most of the stuff I got this week came in twos:

The first of two tiki trophies is this Hawaiian one without the nameplate. I think this trophy was won in a surf contest in Hawaii in the 60's by surf legend Buzzy Trent.

This tiki trophy is actually a salt shaker glued to a tablesawed 4x4 with a plaque on it.

They put a sticker on the top to hide the holes

I think this trophy was Joel Tudor's participant trophy. He gave it to a homeless guy to sell at the swap meet because he was running out of room on his trophy shelf.

Two westwood nodders and two unmarked, vintage tiki mugs:

Two resin Kona coffee mill cups

Two of the most poorly carved Phillipino Ku mugs ever:

I wonder if they same guy carved both of those or if they all were supposed to be like that.

Two similar ceramic tiki face vessels, each one is missing one improtant feature: the other shaker and the other eye

Two more rarer  variations of phillipino Hawaiian Ku mugs and a rare "Hawaii" carved cup. I say it's rare because most cups with that design say "Honduras" or "Costa Rica" on them.

A hawaii medallion tied on to a seashell necklace with a trashbag wire:

It has` a small chip on the back and it also says "Aloha: Tony Lease tours"

A cocojoe's letter opener that I didn't have yet:

And finally, an aquarium:

I want to see if I can turn it into a custom multi tiered CocoJoe's display case. Kind of like the one Khan Tikimon made, but only deeper with a pedestal in it. Challenge will be to get he wood for the back wall to hang the plaques on. I cant fit a single piece in because of the hole on top, so I'll have to plank it up with pieces that will fit through the top opening somehow.

Wordy post.

Yo' Buzzy! Maybe you can find some bamboo flooring or other hard wood floor pcs....convenient tongue and groove stacking....pre-drill your plaque holders and load um up...can't wait to see it :o

Killer finds! Freddie

New stuff!

The lamp has a flickery bulb so it is kind of fun.

Bootleg Moai Kavakava & Moai Paapaa, no makers marks and they are hollow.

Does anyone know what time frame and or location these Don the beachcomber matches are from?

Interesting Items in Ventura thrift store

Yesterday evening I found 4 monkeypod wall hangings. They are cross sections of monkeypod with color photos of Waimea Valley "decopaged" into carved areas. Imagine a postcard on a 6" round piece of monkeypod. They each have small typed labels on the back. By the labels and the gold color of the covering over the photos, they are probably 30-40 years old.

I'm not into Hawaiiana and $4.95 for each individual hanging was too expensive for me. But they were very nice pieces. So they're in the Coalition Thrift Store in Old Town Ventura. For long-time residents it's the old S&H Green Stamps building. For the younger set, it's the thrift store in the middle of the block on the other side of the street from the Mission. They're against the wall on a middle rack next to the hanging blankets.

My best finds in the last month:

Tretchikoff's Chinese Girl in a lovely frame - $20 at a garage sale.

and yesterday -

A Leeteg for 5 bucks at Sally Ann!

Even before I read this I knew it wasn't a real Leeteg - it's just not executed all that well. Look at these awkwardly painted hands

totally lacking in fine detail - the fingers are like sausages. Does anyone have a picture of the original for comparison? I couldn't find one online. The painting is called Hukilau Vahine.

Still, for 5 bucks it made my day. It's in excellent condition - the colors are vibrant and I like the fake wormholes in the frame.

Signature. Apparently the bottom line says "copy" but it's pretty much illegible. (black velvet sure shows up the cat hair, dunnit? I'm gonna have to get the scotch tape out).

T

DIOS MIO did you TRUMP ME!.....I have been back and forth in Edmonton for the last 2 weeks and though I did find 3-4 coco/hip tikis and a few nifty HAWAII albums ( a martin denny for 2 bucks ) and spotted a couple of great bamboo/rattan pieces I don't even come close to that find !
I lay my straw hat down this time sir !
congrats!
Funny that we find anything this far from the Islands but hey .....
