This week's stuff:

A set of Islands Restaurant at the Hanalei/RedLion/Crowne Plaza Hotel chopsticks:

Didn't find any previous pictures of these on TC so here are some closeups of the graphics and text:

back:

This former sea turtle is now a decoration:

I bought him with the intention of bringing him back to life and releasing him in marine preserve.

A mug:

An unmarked not a schirman or Polyart King K, so it must be a Lava Ray King K.:

Buzzy Out!

Picked this up at Swanbergs on Thursday. In addition to new shirts, Lauren sells vintage shirts and mugs, as well as Tiki Farm mugs. I have bought a few mugs, shirts and other items there in the past.

I'm surprised it doesn't have the card then. You should ask about it next time you're there. (Did you check inside the mug?)

Nicely done leleliz... I swear, there is NOTHING like those to be found in these corn fields of the midwest...

Thanks. I wish I knew more about Hawaiian shirts actually. I come across racks and racks of them all the time and i know some of them have to be vintage but I am no expert. I just buy the barkcloth ones because I love the look and feel of them and I know they are older.

I found this at Walgreen this past weekend, Since this is my first post I thought I would share. It's not vintage but I like it. :)

Patrick, don't be frightened or put off by anything you hear in the posts to come.
Welcome to Tiki Central!

Here's some interesting reading about your find. :)

What ?

Sorry, Dude! Just a feeble attempt at humor regarding the history of these little fountains here on TC. Welcome aboard & keep posting your finds. I think this & the home bar threads are the best part of TC. I love to see what everyone finds & how they put those finds to use in their home bars. Do yourself a favor & go back in this thread & check out the posts. You'll see lots of amazing stuff that people have managed to find in the wild. I didn't realize how much tiki stuff was out there until i got hooked!

Hey Buzzy, Are you sure that this is not a Schirman?? I have and have also seen the exact one numerous times with the Schirman stickers. I have seen it in the black and the red/brown color and both marked Schirman. Some of his stuff (You probably know) was not inscribed with his name and had just the blue label only.
Just wondering what you think.

My brother got me one of those for Christmas...for what it cost it's a cool little fountain. I wouldn't worry too much about focusing on stuff being vintage or not...if it floats your boat then go for it! Just remember, there are a lot of great artists here on TC that could use your support too!

I'll present the evidence that I used to determine it was lava ray instead of a Schirman and see if you concur with my findings:

Known Schirman on the left and a Lava Ray on the right

Schirman on the left is signed, as well as having the blue sticker on the back. The one on the right has no signature or mark anywhere on it.The sculpts look super duper close to each other, almost identical in every detail. The easiest way to spot difference is in the shape of the two bases, which you can see differ in shape just slightly:

The one on the right had this maker's tag:

I based my conclusions on the following factors:
#1 The base on the one I found was shaped identical to the Lava Ray one I already had
#2 No mark was on the bottom like the Lava ray I had, unlike the schirman
#3 A couple other minute differences between the two sculpts align with the Lava Ray one I had

I couldn't find any evidence that it was a Schirman other than it looks very very close to a Schirman that is marked that I already had.

Therefore, I went out on a limb, and at great risk to my personal reputation, declared it a "Lava Ray."

To further confuse matters:

There are also those pesky Polyart guys(far right) who seem to bear a strange resemblance to pieces from both companies:

I've also seen a couple more Lava ray/Schirman "crossover" pieces, including this really small tiki:

I also have a few Schirman/Polyart pieces that are pretty much the same as each other.

Buzzy Out!

Cool Buzzy! Thanks for the Info. on the Lava Ray piece. I did not know they were so close with all the details. PolyArt is easy to tell because of their more crude details and roughness. I agree with yah and it's always good to see the items compared to each other. Thanks!!

Thank you for the nice welcome ! I look forward to many years here !

Zeta, these belong to the rare family of bubble gum machine Tiki pendants:

...even smaller and cheaper than their big brothers, the regular plastic Tiki pendants. :)

I received the swizzles I mentioned previously. Mostly tiki with a few kiwis, some Air NZ tiki toothpicks and a set of Zulu Lulu thrown in:

Closer pics:

The guy on the right is an early Air NZ (FLY AIR NEW ZEALAND). The same design and colour was also used for Teal Airlines, which became Air NZ in 1965.

I suspect these cool blue taiaha swizzles are made by the same company as the cocktail sticks in my previous post....

All marked NEW ZEALAND

Just back from 5 days or so in the city (and elsewhere!)and the pickings were pretty good:

14" Kava bowl, just need to refinish the surface with something foodsafe (I'm keen to use it for its intended purpose!) Any suggestions?

A nice book on Primitivism in Modern art, - includes Marquesan, Rapa Nui, PNG and others, juxtaposed against similar works from the modern era. This book is proof that it always pays to go back to some places for a second look!

I also found the motherlode of tropical shirts, which are not easy to source here unless you like the newer, ill-fitting chainstore variety. I saw some beautiful vintage shirts but I only buy what I can wear, so some of the coolest designs had to be left behind. I did get an Iolani which I became very excited about , and a couple of sweet Fijian (or possibly NZ) made shirts. (PICS SOON)
I actually managed to wear all 3 shirts in the few days I was there too - I'm sure my family thinks I'm slightly unhinged!

Paipo,
Nice finds! Mineral oil is food safe and polishes nicely. I would try that for the Kava bowl.

I checked and rechecked out the book you showed when i was in college. Great pix!

Found these books in a store room we had to unload, they were about to give a bunch of books away and asked if I wanted to look through them, found these and a bunch of the tribal art magazines that seem to be some kind of an auction.

300 pages of tiki finds! Wahoo!

Found this today.

Anyone have any clue WTF it is??

No markings anywhere but the tapa seems to be

pretty darn tight! ( old)

Bunny Palm!

Looks like a tissue holder for a giant Moai.

Went to a pretty great estate sale today. Guy used to work for RCA records then Columbia Records all before 1960. There were hundred of thousands of never played mint condition records it was amazing. The guy was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII and he had one of the most diverse books collections I have ever seen.

Anyways I picked up these 3 books. Sorry I do not have a scanner :( so go with me on this:

Blue Horizons - Paradise Isle of the South Pacific - featuring Samoa Islands, Tonga, Fiji, French Polynesia, The Cook Islands and Hawaii.

One of my favorite photos is this one of artisans in Tonga working on a 63 foot piece of tapa. Think its possible to find this in the wild?

Here is a coffee table book on Hawaii:

Favorite photo shows the Ki'i figures at the City of Refuge,or Pu'uhonua O Honaunau. They guard the pursued and the vanquished who found sanctuary there:

and another coffee table book : Hawaii's Enchanted Islands.

Has great info on LeeTag, Don the Beachcomber, the tourist trade and luaus.
(that is Don the Beachcomber. Sorry for the bad pics!

and here is an outrigger hanging above a dinner/luau service:

Hands down the Isle of the Pacific is the best one.

that Tapa rocks!!!!

Slow week = angry Psycho Tiki D. Today's finds...

The Polynesian Palace/Al Harrington The South Pacific Man-Hawaii matchbook.

Del Webb's Kuilima Resort Hotel and Country Club, North Shore, Oahu Hawaii Daga white bamboo mug.

Two OMC Moai mugs, unmarked with stickers.

Disney "Randotti" Glow Skull.

Later!

Found 2 of these cool cans from the Wreck Bar (Castaways), anyone seen these before? They have some sand or something sealed inside so they can be used as a rattle/noise-maker...

I found this old, bamboo bar or book shelf for $12 at a thrift store, it is super heavy. The masks are just leaning against it...

Finally these 2 Reglor of California Lamps, which I have had for a long time, not Tiki really, but I like them...

Some other new stuff...

A new display of some old mugs...

My new couch...

I found this glass...I had only seen it in mug form

Yeah, about a hundred times and more. Funny that here the ceramic mug seems to have outnumbered the glasses--I never saw one of these either. What if the mug was cheaper (as an import) than the printed glass back then?

I have that glass too, I found it in Seattle a couple years ago. My thought that it might be later, the ceramic ones got too expensive, so they brought in the glass ones in the summer of 1980. Then John Birges came along...and kaboom! The only surviving glasses are these two that were smuggled out of the bar in Great Aunt Mabel's purse.

Yep, so I bought 9 of these things. This one one of those times, where you can't pass them up, but once you get home, it's like "What the hell did I buy these for?"

It's pretty much an oddly shaped, plastic pineapple. It doesn't open up. There are no holes to insert a straw. It doesn't light up.

It's just a bag of 9 objects that will take up space. I have no idea what to do with these. I usually give any tiki/hawaiian item I find (except some mugs and paper items) to my brother. Even he doesn't want these.

Oh well.

Use 'em as bowling pins at your next tiki party or back yard luau...

Scored this killer Tiki mug in a Vegas Salavation Army today!

I drove by it for weeks building Frankies Tiki Room back in

Nov. and never stopped in but thought, there's got to be Tiki in there. So, was back in town and had to stop this time and
Score city!! If I was only that lucky at the penny slots!

The "Hawaiian Air" tiki-tea cup is cool too! It's gonna go on my Hawaii vs. Poly Pop collection/ war diorama shelf!

p.s. that tapa thing was a real score from Goodwill in HB.

It was a particular board box wrapped in tapa and had canvas leaves of some sort on wire. Totally funky tiki!! But, now it's turning into a lamp and the canvas leaves are toast!

Everyone thinks it was a tissue box.

I'm thinking of making a few and selling them at Tiki Oasis.

Whadda ya'l think?
