Actually that bust is a Lefton bust. Legos tend to have those marble looking eyes I believe. Also I just found that same bust in a thrift and its even marked on the bottom "Lefton". Big Kahuna has found a few also.

It was another good weekend for shirts. I even found two dresses.

I also picked up some great fabric from 1995, a Hilton Hawaiian Village bag and one of those airbrushed mask mugs that I obsess over.

L

Always looks impressive when you hand all the shirts together like that!

I am on the lookout for one of those airbrushed mugs myself. Its just something about them that is super appealing !

No It's clearly marked Lego, and the eyes are Marble-like.

Companies like Lefton and Lego emulated each other, and both made their wares in Japan to make it cost-effective for post-war US consumers. They sometimes made similar molds and used similar graphics to meet market tastes.

Personally never heard of Lefton. My others are a Marwal, and a cheap handpainted ceramic job.

Lefton was a huge company that made all types of ceramic Knick-Knacks, especially Christmas stuff. That sure looks like a Lefton Logo. I suppose what I think is an f & t could be a lower case g, but it would a have to be elevated. I don't have a magnifying glass to check mine & all of my other Lefton stuff is Christmas & packed away. Maybe I'll dig further just to satisfy my own curiosity. Regardless, that's a great piece.

L

Well that explains why 2 of the same bust are each marked differently since mine looks identical and is marked "Lefton".

Well I guess if someone added more letters it would look like Lefton.
I guess certain people are feeling "Angsty" and no one else will argue
with them. Just another reason I don't post very often.
Then again I only know what I like. I wasn't the person who paid $800.00 +
on those Julian - Hawaiian busts on Ebay recently.

Dude, I was just making conversation. I come on TC to escape & have fun. That's all. I get enough "angst" at work & trying to get my 13 year-old to do his homework.

Well I am a woman so I guess I get overly sensitive when people criticize.
If you'll notice I didn't originally mention the bust at all. Just asking if anyone had seen the Oil Lamp before.

Mahalo!

I didn't notice anyone criticizing. I certainly apologize if I offended you. Check my posts, I'm a pretty positive guy. Now I'm going to leave this thread for its intended purpose.

I agree with Rick...having a conversation and discussing something on here is no need for someone to go off on them . Its a forum and the main purpose for most of us is escapism and second to that is learning. Good golly.

Sorry if our multiple comments over your bust rubbed you the wrong way but I for one am glad to know more information on that particular find of mine because I had not seen very many posted here. (oh and by the way I am a girl too-but I am not sure what that means)

ANYWAYS.....far as the THEME of this thread here are a few things-

Vintage 1960s Barkcloth Hawaiian Dress - $2.50:

Really great book on Mysteries of The Ancient WOrld with a whole chapter devoted to Easter Island. GREAT read on that . Wish we had a thread of just books--anyone into that ? Here are some pics :

Got these Honolulu tourist mags from the 60s 2 weeks ago and forgot to post them. Love all the ads on fashion/food /culture of Hawaii and it has great ads for Pan Am and this one is my fav from Aloha Airlines:

Really enjoying the book---pretty fascinating stuff.

I'ts not Lefton , I have identical bust with foil sticker on the bottom, I would be willing
to stake my reputation on that one Liz.Sorry to correct you but when I am right, I must speak.

Legos on the outside Marwals on top .I obviously like these busts .

Paris finds...

Double deck of Matson Cruise Lines playing cards with the Ukulele menu motiff.

Map and museum guide for the Musee du quan Branly.

Spirit Hut mug.

Drei Moai Volcano bowl.

Hey, Surf! I think you need a Polynesian Bust 12-step program. You're right! I found one today with the foil label intact that clearly says Lego. I thought mine said Lefton, but I guess it's kinda distorted on the felt. I wasn't sure, that's why I was pondering out loud. Unfortunately, someone got offended. I sleep with the Lego one on the right side of my pillow & the Marwal one on the left. How 'bout you?

Today's finds...

Three more Martin Denny albums; Quiet Village, A Taste of Honey and Exotic Sounds From the Silver Screen.

Two Orchids of Hawaii R-72 Moai mugs.

Peanut mug from the Tonga Room Fairmont Hotel San Francisco.

Earring mug from the Tonga Room Fairmont Hotel San Francisco.

Mugs were $3.00 each, records were $1.00.

Later!

Hmmm..mine doesn't have a foil sticker..just white writing.

Not like I REALLY care but first Bill you need a 12 step program for addiction to busts (not those busts Tipsy!) and second what the heck ever. If I am wrong and mine is a Lego instead of a Lefton do I really care? Nah. I bought mine for super cheap in A+ condition and that is all that keeps me going! Mine isn't made of ceramic though or chalkware but a heavy molded plastic so if this is the norm than I give in and Lego my Eggo !

BY the way .....I really enjoy the friendly info/fact banter about items such as these. I feel like no matter who is "right" I learn so much from everyone esp. in instances like this :)

Duane glad to see you found some stuff in Paris. Always good to get some international collecting in :)

(Big Kahuna I didnt even see that you had said something about a 12 step program ! lol..guess we think alike!)

This is reviving an older find of mine (see page 315 if interested). I couldn't find a tiki restoration thread (except for mugs) and didn't want to be so bold as to start a new one. So, Mai Tai provided some guidance on dolling up a crusty old tiki I found. Here are the before and after shots:

Basically, it's just a bath and whole bunch of teak oil. I decided against sanding it so I could preserve the detail and "vintage" look. There is speculation that this tiki used to live at one of the Trader Vic's, although there is no solid proof backing that up.

Hey surfalaia, that came out nice! Did it soak up a bunch of the teak oil? That tiki is set for life now, especially if you keep it indoors.

Thanks. I just don't like when someone tells me what My bust like.LOL

Dadgummit my feet hurt! I wonder how many miles I walked this week? Brimfield was better to me than usual. I think I actually spent more money on stuff than on gas, parking & bad food! Here're my finds:
3 pretty decent mugs; Kahlua Hut, Tihati's Bora Bora E, & a funky, unmarked white palm tree/bamboo mug. Anybody know anything about the last 2?

A nice Maori War Club, not real old, but a rare find around here:

A coupla kool pieces of sheet music, $1.00 each:

A $4.00 tiki bottle opener & some swizzles from the Wreck Bar & Tahitian Bar at The Castaways in Miami:

Very kool CoCo Joe's still sealed in cellophane! Dilemma: to unwrap or not to unwrap!?:

Awesome 1963 copy of "Typee" by Herman Melville in the original protective sleeve. This book looks like it was never touched & the illustrations are awesome!:

Finally, this guy!!!!!:

Any info on this guy would be greatly appreciated!

Also found some stuff in the last coupla weeks:
Nice treasure Craft platter & small bowl:

Next, some awesome mugs from my local hotspot. One girl in this store was always trying to find me stuff like the other dealers did, but kept striking out. She'd come back with 3 year-old Hawaiian playing cards & party store tikis. I figured she had given up, but last week she was at a house clean-out & saw a bunch of mugs. She called the owner of the store to ask if she thought I would want them. The owner's reply: "Buy them!" I actually had to put 6 more common mugs aside cuz I didn't have enough cash. I'll pick those up tomorrow. Check these out!:

Even though the South Seas/Hawaiian mug is local, I've never seen one before. Any info? I know the mug on the right was used at the Mauna Loa, but this one says "Concordian Heights" on the front of it. It seems to be a glaze that was fired on the mug, but is a slightly different color than the glaze around the rim & it looks like an afterthought. It does say Designed by R.A.M. like the Mauna Loa mugs. I was wondering if maybe this was the mug-makers way of getting rid of leftover stock after the Mauna Loa closed? Anyone have any ideas on this? I'll be back tomorrow with the stuff that's still waiting for me.

L

Really love those Herman Melville illustrations Rick. Looks like the warmer weather is bringing you some good tiki hunting mojo!

Don't you make War Clubs? I think you should just send me that one.War Club-less in Virginia.LOL

T

Well that explains why there was no tiki left at Brimfield. BK affectionately "I hate you!"

I left a couple Leilanis! Did ya see the Witco that Granite got?
I believe Basement Kahuna makes war clubs. Unless there's tracing paper involved, I'm not very artistic!

[ Edited by: Big Kahuna 2009-05-16 19:55 ]

OK! Back to my local haunt today to pick up what I left behind.
The usual suspects:

Some not so usual:

Neat little signed bud vase by ele. This is the second ele piece I've found:

It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so I don't expect any hunting, good thing too, cuz I'm broke!

Rick,

You are smokin' on fire with those finds. If you are up for some more trades, you know where to find me!

Slow day, over 100 degrees here today, went to the flea early and left early to go to Swanbergs and the Pacific Rim Festival.

All I found was this...

Another Tonga Room peanut mug. Found in the same booth as the other's Friday.

Only album found today was this "Live at Shipwreck Kelly's Billy K And The Seaman".

OK! Today wasn't a total loss! I scored this kool Ku statue. Not sure what he's made of. He's heavier than the Hapa or Lava statues. The logo on the bottom appears to be DCP. It also says Made In Hawaii. Any info on this guy, kids?

That looks like it may have been a master used to create molds for CoCo Joe's or HIP pieces.

You've had some amazing finds this week! About all I ever find around here are army's of Benihana mugs. The Typee book is beautiful! The Kahlua Hut mug is, what seems to be, a less common version with the name near the center (as opposed to the bottom) and without the long hair and beads. Regarding the CoCo Joe's piece; personally, I'd keep it wrapped.

I'm pretty sure it's "PPC" for "Pied Piper Creations."

That same sculpt was used by a mess of companies. Here's a Randotti, Pied Piper, and a plaster unmarked:

And three CocoJoe's versions:

Buzzy Out!

Boy, Buzzy, it sure looks like your Pied Piper. Does it have the same logo on the bottom?

My first Velvet...
Don't know if the Hula Girl is vintage or not....
