While out thrifting today I got some pretty crappy news via my cellphone so I think this was the universe's way of saying it was sorry.

The most kick ass score on 2 kick ass vintage shirts -- each were $3:

A zip up/button up combo barkcloth by Iolani of Hawaii size L

AND the single BEST shirt I have ever scored--Primo Beer by Hawaiian Holiday Sportswear. So freakin sweet.

EDITED Because I forgot to post the shot of the back

Thanks. Nope I don't wear any of the shirts I find. I just like to collect them because I can find so many vintage ones super cheap.

I believe the Primo Beer shirt is a large, although the size tag is missing from the shirt itself

Since I was just whining about how dry the hunting has been around here, I believe I need to eat my words along with a piece of humble pie...

Found this at Goodwill today for $1.50!

I saw an ad for a tiki/retro yard sale on Craigslist.

Once I got there I met the person having the yard sale and it was Sven Kirsten.
What a great guy. He was selling off some of his tiki/retro stuff. This was by far the best yard sale I have ever seen and I have been to plenty. He had the greatest stuff.
Most of the mugs were sold in the first 5 minutes, but here is what I got.

An early Tiki Farm mug.

A Crazy Al #18 mug (now my prized mug)

A Witco hanging clock which needs a new mechanism.

[ Edited by: geedavee 2009-06-13 12:09 ]

I also stopped by Sven and Naomi's yard sale. I picked up this shirt from him.

A couple of finds today. First 2 stirs from Trader Vic's and the Castaways. Then my better finds, 2 menus from the Masten Lines cruises featuring prints by Louis Macouillard, 'New Zealand' and 'Samoa' respectively. The menus are from 1959 and 1966, and the colors are much more impressive them my lousy picture shows.

This week's finds...

Postcard booklet from Pacific Ocean Park. This one has four postcards from the South Sea Adventure. Dated 1965.

I know, but I couldn't pass it up for a quarter!

Peanut mug from Hawaii Kai. First one.

Tidbit tray from Coco Joes.

Tiki knife made by Thorn Artists LTD.

Van de Kamp's presents Les Baxter his orchestra and chorus Music of the 60's.

Hawaiian Percussion Billy Mure his guitar and orchestra.

Hawaii Tattoo-The Waikikis.

Driftin' And Dreamin' In Hawaii. My first red vinyl Hawaiian LP.

Two concave bottom Mr. Bali Hai mugs. Slight damage to the one on the left, but I have a good one that needs a lid!

Trader Vic's skull mug #7. Would have been #8, but I sent one out on the mug trade a couple times ago.

Tiki cup marked Kapalolo Ipu Kauai 1977.

Tiki Bob matchbook.

Very large, very heavy, very old and very cool cement Tiki wall hanging.

Later!

PTD

It was a good weekend for matchbooks...

and shirts...

and miscellaneous items.

New stuff:

So far as I can tell, a PNG carving:

More PNG stuff. I think these next 3 are supposed to be nut mortars:

A cocojoe's lighter:

Medium sized coco joes Kanaloa:

Buzzy Out!

K

I just saw one of these today without any text on the back (I've seen several different names on these in the past).

Bec and I picked up two sweet rattan chairs on what was supposed to be a quick hop over to Portland Nursery - amazing how a small detour to find lunch put us over in the Hawthorne area. I still have to go back and pick up the second chair as they both wouldn't fit in the tiny car.

Had to go to Rhode Island Thursday to pick up a stock order for my Rod & Kustom biz. While there, I hit an antique mall & scored these:
Funny I had to go to RI to find this mug I've been unable to find in MA:

Great Martin Denny LP in super condition:

Set up shop at a Hot Rod/Rockabilly show yesterday & scored these:
Nice OMC mug I didn't have & a coupla Treasure Craft pineapples

Grabbed a kinda funky Target mug from my buddy & a Hawaii tourist mug that I normally would have passed on, but it was from my best hunter at the local antique shop. Sometimes ya gotta take the bad stuff, so he'll keep finding good stuff, which he did.

Also score this serving tray at my local haunt:

And these made up for the lame Hawaii mug:
Four Kon Tiki Ports mugs!

L

Good scores there guys.

Duane I love that postcard book--man that is the one place I wish was still in existance!

Looks like a box of cologne. Yes?

O.K. now I see that but either it's a really big box or a really great picture? I want one!

Me too, but only if it's full. I'll bet that stuff would make me a chick magnet!

L

Chick magnet...try a Witco magnet! Thats what he sprays on himself when he goes out hunting. Kinda like his version of the Sex Panther Cologne!

the box was empty.

I think Tiki David is the Witco Magnet! I just attract mugs, once in a while.

Here are my finds from the first part of the year. I haven't posted since winter because we moved and one of the first things I had to pack up was the Tiki bar. (something about "de-cluttering"...) But then I haven't really found that much worth posting. Here's the good stuff:

A "Trader Vic's USA" coconut mug found hiding among the vases and planters and 3 Warehouse mugs(!)

A 2-faced mug in an ugly, opalescent glaze (must be from the 90s!), a leilani (finally!), pineapple mug from Shonfeld's, and a glazed version of a samurai grog mug.

A bunch of records.

Beachcomber Edmonton pick and swizzle, Tiki Tiki Edmonton swizzle (been looking for this one!), and a really great find: The Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver.

Lastly, a friend went down to Disneyland and picked me up one of these bad boys. (sorry - bad photo skills)

K

I found this approx 6"x16" wall piece at one of our local Kelowna thrift stores. No labeling or hint of its origins. Looks terrific on the wall of my Tiki Lounge is all that really matters :)

I've not seen a piece like that, Ky-Tiki... very nice. Do you think that's the original fabric?

I have seen quite a few of these here on the West Coast but I have not seen any with material as a backing before. I do not think it is original but can't guarantee it.
There is also a matching pineapple wall hanger with a man in the center playing the ukulele. I have seen these in various sizes from about 14"-24" in height. These were made in the Philippines and some have the small white stickers on the back. The Hula dancer ones are cool.

Welcome Ky-Tiki to TC! Good to have another BC'er on here!

Mahalo, TabooDan

Big Kahuna, Does the kon-tiki ports mugs you got have cubic zirconium eyes or it it some thing someone added? I just have not seen them with that added or still intacted before. I have had about 8 of those mugs and never seen one with that option. Awesome finds, that one is with out doubt my favorite bisque mug.

Thank you, Bongo and TabooDan. I'm quite sure the fabric (heavy felt) isn't original but I do like the way it looks. Good info this one and the companion piece, Dan. Definitely something I'll be keeping an eye out for in my sojourns.

Yeah, mostly Edmonton finds. But that doesn't include all the stuff I picked up at your store!

I thought I would show this pair real quick before this post gets lost. This is the set of pineapple type wall carvings I was referring to a couple posts back:

Made in the Philipines were both of these.

Thank you, TabooDan! I like how the craftsman had some leeway in creating the piece, quite a number of small differences. And I definitely have to find the Ukulele player.

This has turned out to be a good week. Found a Hana Hou Room mug.

They definitely don't look like something someone added. I have one without the rhinestones, but the eye sockets definitely look like something's missing. They probably made them both ways, maybe eliminating the rhinestones in later years to cut costs.

I actually admit to NOT owning all the Tiki related books out there so I finding this today for $0.98 worked for me :

[ Edited by: leleliz 2009-06-18 12:39 ]

on a recent trip to Calgary ....

Wow, had no idea it existed.
Fossil Limited edition watch (1000 made), given out to people who worked on the movie.
Finding Nemo Tiki's from the aquarium wrist watch with tin.

bought new at a booth at a street faire with a dead battery.

Well let's see, I saw a Harvey's Sneaky Tiki bucket mug, a Trader Dick's peanut mug and a Quon-Quon coffee mug missing one rhinestone in it's eye, Martin Denny's Exotica and Quiet Village albums and since have more than I need, I passed on them.

I did find this...

At first glance, I thought Witco. The eyes are similar to the lamp I bought, but the lips and wood grain don't seem consistent. Either way, I like it, in a Tiki Modern kind of way.

Anyone know??

Found at one of the nastiest 'Thrift' stores I have ever been to. Not sure where most of the stuff came from, dumpsters possibly. Anyway found this, he's about 6 inches, no markings, looks older, or maybe it was the stress of sitting next to used, uncleaned, ashtrays (ewwwwww!) Any information would be helpful.

Hey, Dewey! Kool tile! Maybe you should post more pics of that kool house in Beyond Tiki.

L

I was thinking the same thing! Is that a tile transfer or did you buy the tile like that? And you are in clearwater? I lived in CLearwater for about 5 years off Drew St. Have you tried the thrifts off Central in St. Pete? Well they are more like junk/antique shops. You can usually find tiki stuff tucked in them if you have the time to look.

Ok, lele, is there any part of the country where you haven't lived? :)

Bongo my friend only in 3 states have I resided. I was just able to cover the East/West and Middle

Ha, no unfortunately it is not an original tile. My wife is obsessed with Atomic Starburst. So, to sate your appetites I will post a couple pictures of her vintage china collection. She has a cabinet full of the stuff. My wife and I are into all sorts of atomic age, vintage Florida kitsch, and old surfing stuff, as well as tiki. It seems odd trying to blend it all, but she has a great eye, and it seems to work. Please note the tiki mugs in picture one are recent additions, one is from Goodwill, the others are new, waiting for Fathers Day libations. Going to barbeque and make some Voo Doo Juice for my dad.

And yes, I have been up and down Central Ave, in St. Pete. There is a great booth at one of the antique shops. Lots of furniture, a few decent mugs (a bit overpriced imho), and some various Hawiiana, and Florida kitsch.

My wife is laughing at me because my Tiki find didn't get his props. Please forgive me if these pictures stray from Tiki finds, I don't want this going into an Atomic Kitchen discussion. BACK TO TIKI!!!

WOW! Great collection!

L

I have many of those pieces as well--damn had I only known you people existed when I lived in Florida ! Esp when I was home for Christmas this past year pretty much purging an entire storage unit full of all atomic stuff. sigh

Welcome to TC btw! and be sure to check out "Beyond Tiki FInds" for more of the same stuff I am sure you both will love.

Oh and about your tiki...they all look alike to me!

These lamps have always been on my holy grail list. They need a bit of a spruce. The hibachi is a long-time favorite that I'd just never run across at a reasonable price until now.

I was actually bidding on those lamps on Ebay too, which is rare for me cuz I rarely buy on Ebay. Good for you that you won.
