Hey... sometimes I only find one item at a time. And... the pictures are better when you show one item at a time. And... lelelizzy-face just likes to give me a hard time. :)

Well I guess I have to admit it...." Hi I'm uncle trav and I am a one find wonder this month but I hope I can change"
Now I feel better. Just a vintage bark cloth shirt to show for a bunch of driving around. Made by Sportsman of Australia.

TS

You all are doing a much better job at finding one thing a month, than me! I walk in lately, and my local thrifts are loaded with craptacular junkified country goodness! 12 thrifts in December, 3 in Jan. and all produced an incredibly humongous bag of nothing...
(I did recently buy an item on ebay though, but in MY opinion, ebay doesn't "really" qualify as finds, so I don't post 'em.)

L

Tom I invite you to NorCal...land o'tiki a plenty

Then you too can post 1 find at a time!

M

Just a couple of finds courtesy of the Salvation Army. Total cost $5.

This week's stuff:

A vintage velvet nude painting:

It's about 22" x 28"

Signed "Rodriguez Hawaii"

Here's some info provided to me on Cece Rodriguez from TC's own velvet painting master, J. Salin(Iokona Ki'i).

A two foot tall plastic/resin? hollow Moai:

I saw a carving exactly like yours...The asking price was $15.00. Is that a good price?

I would have to say, "Yes, that is a good price for that and I would be happy to pay $15 for it." I use a complex algorythmatic function when deciding on acceptable purchase pricing. It's kind of like the median between the ebay cost of similar items including shipping, and my $5 upper spending limit on tiki finds, divided by the ratio of money spent divided by number of items purchased that day, minus the probable resale value of it, if applicable.
I paid $20 for it, and 99% of the time, I would have passed on it for that price. However, other factors came into play when I bought it. Here's the back story:
On Xmas eve, I gave my aunt the new copy of Tiki Magazine. My cousin looked at it and said, "Hey, I saw a bunch of tikis at a thrift store yesterday when I was shopping for my mom." Then he launched into this tiki hunters dream come true story about an old lady with a 7500 square foot mansion full of old carvings and exotic art that she was getting rid of. He said there were about 10 things he saw, and described what sounded like Maori pieces. I got the location and went to check it out on the Saturday morning after Xmas. I drove all the way across the county to find the place closed until Monday the 28th. I peered in the window and saw nothing. On that Monday morning, my cousin was over at my house doing some electrical work and saw my maori collection and said, "Oh yeah, all those pieces I saw looked like those." Encouraged, I went to the store again when they opened aq couple hours later, wad of cash in hand, to clean them out. Unfortunately, ALL the pieces turned out to be newer African cost plus type crap. I did, however, find that tiki stuck way back in a dingy corner of the store, all by his lonesome. It looked like it was just there by coincidence and not part of the old lady's fabled collection. So after spending $20 in gas, two half days of travel time, I sucked it up and bought it.($15 would have actually been my hope for price!) Most tikis around that size i've seen usually usually go for $25-40 on ebay, plus shipping. At $20, that was still the most I've ever paid for any of my Maori stuff in my collection. Most Maori stuff I pick up in he wild is in the $3-8 range. I think I on;y have 3-4 that I paid more than $10 for.

I need to give my cousin a tiki art seminar!

Found this beauty yesterday in world famous "lagunilla" flea market in Mexico City...

What is it? I love it. Is it tiki or aztec? Both?

I would say it's Aztiki. :) Is it a candle glass?

Z
Zeta posted on Mon, Jan 4, 2010 3:19 PM

Je je, Aztiki... not a candle holder, definetly a glass for drinking, I even found a napkin with a romantic message written in it inside. What is it?! reminds me of the glass skull from Indiana Jones...

Z
Zeta posted on Mon, Jan 4, 2010 3:25 PM

It could have been a candle glass... but I see no sign of wax or fire in it... The size is of a normal drinking glass but I have seen candle glasses of that size too... But I can picture a candle glass like this for dia de muertos... Or to worship santa muerte... Oh boy, who knows?! There where two, I bought them, so, if anyone wants to trade, let me know...

Keeping with my shtick on this thread - here is a pic of tiki swag as found at a Goodwill store over the Christmas holiday - two vintage OMC Kon-Tiki mugs, mint condition, $2.99 for the pair...

SNAG! :) - at the same location found a vintage paint-by-numbers painting: tropical scene with palm trees, volcano & outrigger canoe complete in vintage frame but didn't snap a pic of that - was too elated after finding the mugs seconds earlier to photograph it in the rack, oops!

It's been a decent start to the new year! All of this was in only 2 days (and 3 stores) of hunting.

Alfred Newman - Ports of Paradise; 2-sided, lined-face tiki candle; samurai grog, sumo flip, and Treasure Island mugs; Quon Quon ceramic lighter/ashtray set; and a Coco Joe's lighter. Some of these had duplicates that I left on the shelf for my good friends/bitter rivals to find...

Man you Canadians are too nice leaving stuff for each other to find!

I refuse to post more than 1 item at a time...well that is because I only went to 1 store and this is all I could find but regardless...1 find at a time lives on!

Trader Vic...butter plate? Mini ashtray? Dont know, dont really care, it cost $0.39.

I have to say that all my finds far outweigh this other crap you people keep posting. I mean I find napkins and tiny saucers...who can beat that??

and no I won't sell it....keep on hatin!

:tiki:

Nice one Liz!

Bow down!

See...hatin!

Great font on that shirt, finally someone spelled Hawaii correctly. And a TRIPLE signature Tretchikoff, now that MUST be authentic! But wait, the first signature reads "Stretchikoff"! Maybe a "student"? :)

We should have The Tackiest, Ugliest Tiki Contest. This fella was found at Goodwill for 99 cents. Moose McGillicudy's in Maui? Who in their right mind would go to a place with that name while they're in Maui?? What would they order? Menehune Mini Wings? The Big Kahuna Bloomin' Onion? What kind of person would go there while in Maui? Mr. Superchoad?

Rays of sunshine in the iphone photo are complimentary, thank you. I'm sure sure you'll find the boomerang table top more exciting.

I think you nailed it. That font looks good. There's one on p. 123 of Tiki Quest, but no location is given.
Duke, can you confirm the location?

T

I few recent finds.. And check out what they're sitting on in the Beyond Tiki Finds..

:P  :P

I got to the late San Jose bar Smoke just before the salvage guy was driving away. I got a pretty cool wooden Tiki to go in my corner, a framed photocopy of old Waikiki and a framed Shag litho (yes I took it out of the frame and its real). Paid $91.00. Does anyone know what the name of the litho is?

[ Edited by: SuperEight 2010-01-09 21:53 ]

SuperEight, I think the name is Oku Ohana Oonu.

This weekend I found a wood Pineapple mug that says Mai Tai. It is stickered on the bottom with Honolulu Alii Woods. I couldn't find it in searches here or Ooga-Mooga. Anybody have more info?

Next a Daikoku Benihana Tokyo Mug

and finally a Bali Hai Ashtray.

Most luck I have had in a LONG time.

Tiki-swizzle, first Swedish tiki-artifact!?!

This is huge! This might be the first artifact of pre-revival Tiki-bar culture in Sweden! Common wisdom has it that that there were only general South-seas exotica in Sweden, such as Pippi Longstockings father who is king of a south sea island, and Bengt Danielssons, the Kon-tiki expedition member with the largest beard on the raft. No polynesian bars or restaurants or modernist swankiness, just anthropology, kids-stuff, and hawaiian-waltzes on 78's. This is evidence of something different. The restaurant, Flygrestaurangen at Bromma airport WAS a modernist, swanky place (by Swedish standards which are understandably lower than Californian of the same period)! It was a classy place with a international "Round the world" menu, grill and chinese. In the early 70s a cocktail contest was held there. Bromma flygrestaurang should now be the focus of local tiki-exploration.

Is it the first? Probably! Swedish tiki-profile Stefan Kery made extensive explorations including interviewing with Hawaii-musician Yngve Stoor's widow and came to the conclusion that there was no Swedish tiki-culture before his import. Another question is dating the stick. It is really difficult to tell from the looks how old it is. The spelling of restaurant as "restaurang" suggests mid 60s or later. The looks of the tiki seem definately pre-revival. Any help with decoding, or the sudden appearence of other swedish tiki items is most welcome.

Update: See Tiki, Flygrestaurangen, Bromma at "locating Tiki"

A vintage red/white barkcloth shirt:

Fairly sure it's a tiki on there.

I am thinkin African heads no tikis there !

Actually I think it's a Solomon Island Tiki like the one Naugatiki showed in the Dawn Wells Moving Sale post ~

This month Dawn Wells had a moving sale. Most of it was pretty run of the mill but she had a couple of Solomon Islands tikis with all the Mary Ann mana that you'd expect. I'm still waiting to see these in the Tiki Finds thread.
