more today...

The first to are reel to reel tapes, no way for me to listen to them
but the boxes look cool.

Nothing amazing but these were all a total of $5.95 so why not buy them.

My mom found this little pink guy at a shop in Sarasota. Does anyone know if he's anything special or just some cheapy tiki? He looks like either a toothpick holder or a really tiny shot glass. His face looks just like the faces on my Trader Vic's salt/pepper shakers, standing next to him.

should start a thread JUST for these environmental style LPs that have like an entire event with sound effects on them...just like BEING THERE

A PNG carving:

And two books:

The second book is by a US photographer, who accompanied a group of Australian "kiaps" (Patrol Officers) in 1969 on a first-contact patrol to pay a visit to a troublesome tribe that been raiding and killing people for food. Some of the photos are startling:

HOLY Matchbooks!

A recent score on a mixed bag of Tiki and Hawaiian.

I thought I found another Trader Vic's Pirate Head mug. Nope, it is from Oscar's.
Does anyone know anything about Oscar's?

Here are few things I found recently:

I raided an 80-year-old woman's liquor cabinet at an estate/moving sale. Judging by the tax stamps etc. I put the Bicardi at between 1982-1985. Was Bicardi ever good? I haven't tried it but it smells fine. I've been wanting these Trader Vic's bottles.

A booze/lei from a different estate sale. Spirits of Hawaii Hawaiian Mai-Tai Cocktail in two types of bottles. Also found an unopened mini of Nassau Royale with almost no fluid left but I don't remember where I put it.

A Silvertone(Sears/Harmony) Uke w/ plastic fret board. Fixed a crack in the body with a glue made of unflavored gelatin. Works great with a nice set of strings.

I dig this 50th State Plate.

Unmarked Tiki Mug. Modern and pretty ugly but I still like it. Anyone seen it before?

This weekend's finds.
An estate sale. About 12" long

And the swapmeet.

A lo-ball glass.

While cruising with gf in Miata, I got a hunch
On where to find a Pearl Of Wisdom, and headhunter bunch.
"I AM NOT HAPPY!!!" gf said,
As she balanced the painting on her head,
So I made amends by taking her out to Sunday Brunch.

Had a great freekin day...
Saw an ad for some "tiki stuff"
Went n took a look...
WOW, glad I went...

Never seen one like this, not sure where it's from, nor do I care, I dig it ($20.00)

12 glasses ($20.00)

Ton o Gin and cradle (20.00)

Rum ($5.00)

Orbit sign ($2.00)

These are recent finds,Nothing unusual but bear in mind we live in England and tiki is really difficultt o find over here!

lil bit of stuff today...

Finding room for this big fella...

Anybody know the scoop?

He's about 7.5 ft tall or so, made of heavy-duty fiberglass, and is HEAVY. Back is open so he fits up against the wall. This one is definitely old based on some tell-tale scratches & what-not.

I've seen neon-ed versions at Chef Shangri La in North Riverside, IL and at Omni Hut in Smyrna, TN, and have seen photos of several of 'em in situ at Jade Island in NY.

All of those places have much Oceanic Arts decor, and a carved pole that's still in OA's catalog is an eerily similar design, though it's much smaller & they don't list this larger, fiberglass version.

If I had to guess, I'd guess OA, but if anybody knows anything about 'im, I'd sure like to know.

Judging from where we found 'im, I'd imagine he spent most of his life sprucing up a Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately the guy we bought him from didn't seem to know anything about it.

For now, he's cozy in the corner of our living room.

did you buy this out of hollywood mirror ?? if not, they have one in the window... same size and color.... if you want a pair of them....

Ragbag, nice find! They were made by Orchids of Hawaii. Here's a pic from their 1992 Catalog...

Thanks for the scoop, Tiki Nomad!

It definitely has a "tiki in a Chinese restaurant" feel to it (we are in the Midwest, after all) so Orchids makes perfect sense.

Mr. Tipsy- this is indeed one and the same from Hollywood Mirror. I walked by it several times, assuming it would be priced ridiculously (to go with just about everything else in that 'hood) before I finally broke down and checked it out. As it turns out, it wasn't too bad and they were more than willing to drop the price by almost half, so I guess they wanted it out of there. The manager couldn't tell me anything about it, other than that they've had it in and out of various parts of the store for a good while now (from the amount of cobwebs on its backside, I'd believe it.)

Go figure... you can still find cool stuff in Lakeview on occasion. I figured our days of buying anything worthwhile in that neighborhood were long, long gone.

i figured it was the same one.... I inquired as to the price a few months back and they wanted way more than i was willing to shell out... glad you got a deal on it. they are way outrageously priced in that store and the joke is, all that stuff is found out at the flea market for chump change... the owner is out there every weekend. Fortunately he buys alot of stuff i want nothing to do with but we still compete for tiki and 50's atomic stuff... glad your tiki has a new home where it will be appreciated....

HT

Nice tiki found at GOODWILL in Garden Grove yesterday .

Nice find Roger. When you have a free moment post a bigger pic-bigger is better
Cheers!

Heya Tipsy-

You hit the nail on the head with Hollywood Mirror- it is crazy over priced (hence the reason I walked by the Orchids tiki multiple times before finally asking what they wanted for it.) I was laughing when we decided to buy this guy, 'cuz in all the years I've lived in Chicago, that's the first thing I've actually bought there. Likewise, most of their stuff is of no interest to me whatsoever... but then a big tiki turns up in the window.

Something tells me that unless an OA tiki or a Witco Mainlander fountain turns up in their window I won't be buying anything else there any time soon.

Speaking of Witco and Hollywood Mirror, they DO have a huge Witco bull wall hanging from their spanish series in the window (the one with the red backdrop.) I didn't ask how much it was... not planning on starting a bullfighting room any time soon. If anyone on here is interested, happy to check it out for 'em. I'm in that neighborhood fairly often.

Mystery Tiki Find. Can you guess what is inside the box?

It is scheduled to arrive next Wednesday or so. Guess I'd better start composing my limerick now!

Didn't have the Braniff version until now.

Been a while since I posted Tiki Finds, but today was a good day in East Tennessee.

Anyone know if the lamp is Witco?

Paul

Picked this up on Saturday after thinking about it for about a month. It's actually on silk or some other fabric and not velvet. I didn't know that until the lady at the shop got it down off the wall for me. It now adorns ExotiDesk 2.0.
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic...one of these days I'll have a new phone.

TS

Saw this at Long Beach on Sunday....I remember seeing info posted here a few years ago on it. It could have went to a new home for $1500...It wasn't going to be me.

Boy, I love that thing, but I'm not sure I love it $1500.00 worth! Good to hear from you, Tom.

The large Mystery Tiki Box finally arrived today. Here's a pic of Marty Step, who helped me big time today with picking it up with his truck and helping me move it into the back yard for unveiling. Anyone care to guess what might be inside? Hmmmmmm? :)

Here's a hint. It's heavy. Very very HEAVY!!! And here's a sneak peak:

Is this a new striptease genre "Box Burlesque"?

It's a major award? A leg lamp?

This is the new follow up to "Storage Wars" and "Baggage Battles": Box Blow-Aways!

MT

Heh heh, not Box Burlesque, and not a leg lamp! Although the shipping company had it marked "Fragile". It's really not "Fragile", though, and it's much heavier than a leg lamp!!!

One last teaser pic before the big unveiling. :D What's inside the Giant Tiki Mystery Box? Can you guess? Hmmmmmm? :)

He was sold through TJ Max stores as a bathroom accessory (apparently a cup for washing your mouth out after you brush your teeth). I have one myself, not a bad little guy to have in a collection.

G

Cool, thanks for the info.

gabbahey

picked this up yesterday.....

sven, any pics of this item from the catalog would be appreciated.... I'd like to know the name of it.

thanks in advance...

The Mystery Box contents you're countin'
On me revealing: Witco Mainlander Fountain!!! :D
Shipping was a nightmare
That left my wallet bare
'Cause the thing weighs as much as a mountain! :o

Nice score Mai Tai - that is one heavy tiki! (I know I lifted it up... barely) I can't wait to see that all set up in your tiki room someday.

Here's my recent scores...

Trio of Witco guitars:

and a nice PNG wood carving:

-Trad'r Bill

To both Bill's...nice finds!

Today's finds...all things I did not have yet...

Skipper Kent's Surfer Girl and Islander Bamboo mugs, lucite Moai candleholder and a couple of Witco tiki carvings.

Only two more Islander mugs to complete the collection!

Later,

PTD
