Haven't been keeping up with my finds.

Vintage Trader Vic's Rock Candy Syrup!

Anybody know about "Beachcombers, the action clubs" with the "sin shack" in Daytona?
It's where the Moscow Mule cup is from.

and most recently:

[ Edited by: Pittsburgh pauly 2012-10-30 13:28 ]

Never seen one of these before, anyone know how many they released?

Recent stuff:

Easter Island Kava kava birdman carving and a Maori piece

Schirman chick and HIP hippie

Trio of Canlis entryway postcards

Castaways matchbook completely devoid of any Polynesian references:

Pair of PMP mugs:

Buzzy Out!

This week brought a few 3 face bucket mugs, the wood fork/spoon tiki handles, a ceramic vase from molokai, some abalone shells, a frank schriman "Kanoa" and a harveys girl mug....but this was the piece I was most excited about....

Erich,

That is cool, never seen anything like that. But what is it? A plate?

DC

Hit a local estate sale this morning that had a full on tiki themed basement with bamboo walls and everything..... cleaned the place out and here is what I scored.....

the 2 large tiki faces are lights- hala kahiki used to have one like the one on the left (also in the book of tiki) - the other maori style one i had never seen till now...

pair of copper oil lamps...

hanging pendant lamp

maracas, spear and glass floats... these are not round but square blocks (hollow inside) - never seen square floats before....

this tall plaster tiki actually has boobs and a tiny vagina......

not bad for a days work.

Score! those panels are too cool, what are the made of?

...mmmm boobs.....

Dusty...it is a small plate...like the size of a bread plate maybe?

Ive never seen one before either. One of those weird yard sale finds where the people have nothing else hawaiian, tiki, polynesian...but for some reason have that.

They are made from:

...like this piece:

That stuff gets really brittle with age, that why it is rare to find them in such good condition. Great score, Tipsy, makes it all worth it, doesn't it.
I wonder if the sellers had any photos of their rumpus room...

thanks sven- yes, they are plastic , made form vac -forms - these are in great shape, not too brittle because they weren't in a bar atmosphere, exposed to cigarette smoke night after nite that effects plastics. Time also makes plastics brittle with age. These are still somewhat fragile but not as fragile as others I have seen up close like the one that used to be at hala kahiki... that one was practically disintigrating.

here are some pics I lifted from the listing..... shows the basement.

I love the picture of the walker next to the Tiki bar! Partying Tiki-style to the end! Just ... need ... to ... get .... over.... to the... Tiki Bar!

Great score Tipsy.

TS

Its been a long while since I've been in this thread, or any others for that matter...I figure most of the stuff that I've found, has long since been posted here in Tiki Finds. But I do not recall seeing this little ceramic glazed necklace find. I found it kind of unique, but have no clue as to who made it. It says it is from Hawaii, on the attached card. It looks vintage, but a bit too clean, IMHO.... Are there any threads on these necklaces from Hawaii made of ceramic and glazed?

Nothing that specific, Tom.

Thanks for those pics of the original basement bar, Tipsy. It always makes me sad to hear another authentic one got dismantled. But hey, good times were had there for sure. That pic with the walker is indeed symbolic, DC.

T

Tipsy McStagger, I also found two of those square glass hanging floats. :) They are about 4feet long. And at first I thought they were new but the netting looked very old.. Great find! Great score!

TP

thanks DC & TP

sven, as far as i know the house is already sold and I'm not sure what the new owners are going to do with it. I spoke with the realtor to let them know that if the owners are going to remodel, i would come dismantle the basement and haul away all the materials. bamboo is at a premium in the midwest and I need some to finish off my own tiki room. It's actually cheaper to buy bamboo from oceanic arts and ship it here than to buy bamboo locally. Plus , with all these new tiki bars springing up (new one to open in milwaukee) as well as new home tiki bars, i'd have no trouble unloading the remainder. Hate to see a cool basement bar dismantled but if i don't salvage the stuff, it's only going to end up in the dumpster - it always does.

OGR

Tipsy, Great photos and finds, congrats. I assume the bar stools are staying w/ the bar? Was the bar was built in or freestanding? Anyway, those period rec-rooms rock. Thanks for the post. OGR

Thanks !! the bar is a built in- not free standing- the stools were for sale- $100 for all four and in great shape. today they would be half price- $50 for the set. Unless of course they are already sold.

There was a lot of crap I passed on this week, but these two definitely made the final cut:

Ooga Mooga calls it the Club wielding tiki mug, same design as the Luau Club Wielding Tiki from florida:

Neat thing about it is the inscription: Students for Kennedy San Diego 68

It was for Robert Kennedy's presidential run. Couldn't find anything about the San Diego branch of this student org, but found a little on the San Francisco one in 68. Neat political crossover piece.

Second item was this large plaster tiki:

It had the original Seaworld price tag on it and the mark Dotieba 874

In the moment, out there in the field, I'd remembered that Randotti was a combo of the Husband and wife's names, so the Dotie prefix part and the three numbers made me inclined to think it was a Randotti piece. The Seaworld tag was another indication, because I heard they sold stuff there as well. I took a chance and grabbed it without being totally sure of what it was, just because of the Seaworld provenence( And, for what it could be, the price was more than reasonable.) I came home and checked on trusty TC,and sure enough, it was a Randotti piece. And, apparently, it was designed by bamboo Ben's grandma...
My hunting sidebar story for this one: Old lava looking tiki, Seaworld, Randotti with the yet to be discovered hedley connection-was all swimming through my mind as the seller was getting me my change. Another shopper there looked at me and started laughing. He asked me why I bought it, and I told him I thought it was neat. He then asked if it came from Hawaii, and I said no, Seaworld(which is in eyesite of where we were). He burst into hysterical laughter again and asked me if I liked Seaworld or something? I told him no again, and said I just liked it. He once again bent over in hysterical laughter at my response. He then told me that the fact that I just walked up, bought it, and didn't argue about the price was the funniest thing he had ever witnessed. Glad I made his swapmeet day that much more fulfilling. Mine sure was!

Buzzy Out!

It's not so unusual when you learn that Bamboo Ben's grandfather is Eli Hedley. They're an artistic bunch of people.

Hey Buzzy
Regarding that Randotti piece-you had me doubled up with laughter after reading your narrative and that fella's reaction to you buying that tiki. All in all, I'd rather be you in that scenario. Nice find-Congrats!
Cheers

Well, that Rapa Nui piece is interesting. The figure on top of the kava kava profile is called a "tohunga." (see - plate 52-The Art of Easter Island; Heyerdahl)

Just a couple of small carvings. The one on the left is carved out of bone.

MORE TODAY

Couroc Serving Tray..... (I really wish it was the Disney Tiki room one).....

The mask looks similar to an Abelam mask from the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea.

Skills = you have them

Here are some recent finds.
Some Fijian weapons. The gugu, 2nd from top, is my favorite. I am not sure what the one that looks like a snail is called. Each is about 30" long.

A couple of bottle stoppers.

Really great full size lamp!

A Mai Kai Shrunken Head mug.

And some records.

Cheers,
ETR

I did not know that. Huh. So he gets it honestly, then. lol.

VERY cool.

A good find, but not as good as I had hoped. There was discussion on here recently about the ceramicist that made mugs for Trader Vic's when he opened his first restaurant, and I confused him with LaTour of Hawaii. Thankfully, the bowl didn't go for as much as I was willing to pay for it (thinking it was the other guy).

I love the color, and that it's a rare bowl. Love the Ku's.

I think it's really cool regardless of who made it. :)

I have one like that that says "HB Things Hawaii" on the bottom, that mold certainly gets around.

WENT TO LISTEN TO ONE OF MY RECENTLY FOUND RECORDS AND THIS FELL OUT...

Cool Story...

So everyone has seen this mug, and if you're like me, you have dozens of them. I buy them for .50-$1.00 when I see them.

But this one was different...and the story with it was well worth the $2.00

I had never seen one that was a pipe stand. Guy told me that he smoked a pipe while he was in Viet Nam. Him and his buddies had a Hawaiian Catalog and they would pick out stuff they wanted from Hawaii. The guys going to the islands for R&R would bring back the stuff for them. So he used this pipe stand while he was in the Viet Nam war. He brought it home after the war, but stopped smoking a pipe. He said it had been in a box for the last 20-30 years....

I told him the story was awesome and that his pipe stand would now be in my tiki hut....among many other things that were probably from that catalog

Think about it, this pipe stand was carved in the Philippines, sent to hawaii, shipped to viet nam, and then brought back to the states. Cool...........

Way cool...

Haven't posted in awhile so I thought I would share this find. It's a transom from a small home built boat. The piece is vintage. Has a great "Kon Tiki" spelled out in a cool Tiki font that is tacked on. The "Kon Tiki" face is hand painted on tin. Now I just gotta make room in the bar for it.

Hey Unk, If you can't find room in your bar I have a new patio thats got lotsa room. Nice find UT.
Cheers

Not too much lately, but still happy!
Anybody know anything about that wall hanging?

U

The wall hanging may be a Ghanaian mask.

Found what I think is a very rare 11 inch Moai candle marked "Treasure Craft 1959 Compton Calif" and a Outrigger Moai!

SCORE.....................

BACK TO THE NORMAL STUFF...

Hey, Trav!
Good to hear from ya. Nice score! Where'd ya find that?

Thanks guys!! I picked up the Kon Tiki piece at a local antique shop that I pick now and then near the Lake Michigan shore. That spot has always been good to me.

I have the actual ceramic treasure craft moai - looks like someone or some company just made a mold of the treasure craft one and made candles from the mold. nice find.

Cool Tipsy, I thought that too! I was surprised to see the Treasure Craft mark on a candle. Strange, but good!

Found a mug which appears to be vintage with no markings. I've never come across this mug before, anyone seen one?
