Killer! Thanks. He has been painted brown, and I'm thinking about stripping the paint and staining/sealing him. Any suggestions??

It has been awhile. Here are some of the highlights...

Double Coconut mug.

Pu-Pu card from the Aku-Aku in Vegas and a postcard from the Tropics in Modesto.

Matchbooks from various Tiki establishments.

Black three Moai bowl from the Aku-Aku in Vegas.

Vintage large three Hula Girl bowl from Trader Vic's.

Two Tonga Punch Tiki mugs from Trader Vic's Hawaii. Since I had four, I sold two on Ebay recently.

Second smaller Treasure Craft Tiki on the right.

Trader Sam's and Frankies mugs from my recent travels.

Hobbist Moai mug marked Rainbow, Hawaii on the bottom.

Vintage Trader Vic's Nautilus Shell mug.

Ceramic Tiki oil lamps, wonder what shades actually came with these?

Really weird colored smaller Tiki mug.

Smaller version on the right of the one on the left!

Later,

PTD

Great stuff as always Duane! Love those lamps!

Bravo, D! Glad to see you're still at it. I've been getting skunked for months. Damn Winter!

Thanks guys!

In the past year I have had ambivalent feelings about posting anything. Seems like there are the few that are trying to "own" TC and along with what seems like so many others, it has left a bad juju keeping me from wanting to participate.

So many people on other social media boards make fun of this board, which really used to be fun and informative. As you can see from my posts (many) most have been documentation of the things I have found, asking questions or information about places I have learned about. Unforunately I have not found a better alternative site to share on, so if anyone knows of another one kindly steer me there.

So I am sticking my toe in the water again. I have learned so much here and I am sure there is so much more to garner in the future. Time and time again I have to remind myself that much like high school there are bullies here you have to either ignore or face head on. But it does get tiresome.

Again, thanks for looking and the positive comments. It does make the hours and money spent worth that much more.

Great finds psycho. I've been keeping an eye out for some of those for a long time. Especially the nautilus mug. I've seen tons of others that are identical, but have legs.

Nice finds PTD! Dat Moai bowl is killa.I have a soft spot for anything from the Aku Aku.
I have not found anything lately. I think that my Tikiqueen felt sorry for me and bought this Leroy piece at his art show this morning.

Stands37" tall

T

Wow, we actually went to a moving sale today. Remember we are up north here and its usually way to early for them! But we did pickup a couple of things. :)

Duane I 100% agree with your TC observation and appreciate you stating the obvious. You know that thred..where are the original TCers today? Well most are tired of the postings of many ruined by the long winded diatribes of a few so why not post elsewhere.

Its great to see you sharing your finds on here however...even if we are in real life friends you find better stuff then most--ya bastard

T

A cool Tiki mug albeit with a seemingly Native American twist on it.

New to me.

I just wanted to say that although I've only posted once before on this particular thread I do check it often and love seeing everyone's finds.

Sadly, I have never seen any tiki items in the "wild" here in NJ so I don't have anything to post. But maybe I'll do better during this year's yard sale season. You niver know, right?

I've checked garage sales, the Salvation Army, a flea market and some rummage type sales. Nada. Sigh.

Congrats to those of you who score these amazing finds. I am most jealous!!

Here's a little tiki I found at the Nashville Flea Market. (Marked 'made in Philippines').
I dig it.

Gooneybird, I dig it too.

Lori, it just takes time. Many items I thought I'd never find here in Indiana, turned up in my lap. Keep at it. "When the collector is ready, the tiki will be there!" (Or something like that.) :)

New to this thread. I've had the tiki bug a long time just didn't know it till recently. Here is a little ivy tiki my mom had for years that I now own, the Ku is Kool:

My wife's boss gave her this black craved Lono tiki and she in turn gave it to me. They were in retail and this was a sample item. It's 25in tall and it has sat in our living room for years. We do have tropical decor:

My black SUV has white tiki stickers all over the back (no photo).
I've had 2 tiki mugs for years and recently I bought them some friends:

This photo is also my screen background on my computer.

Here are some tiki decanters which I'm fond of:

and a closer shot of these little shakers which I'm also fond of. One set from Trader Vics one set from Steve Crane and the other set unknown:

Oh on the left I was given (a few years ago) this small Moai from Easter Island. It was made from the same quarry as the real giant ones. A special possession. The other Moai is the opposite a fake rock molded Moai from Target's or Walmart's tourist section here in Hawaii.

This week's stuff:

This PNG mask is spot on for the one in the OA catalog, but it's two feet instead of the listed catalog length of 3 feet:

I'll assume they made a 2' version at some point as well?

Maori Waka:

I have 5 different wakas now. Enough to make a subcatagory or branch of my Maori tourist art collection, which is a sub catagory of my Oceanic art collection, which is another branch in my overall Tiki collection...

(looks like a repainted) Maori mask. It also used to have a leather hanging strap

I never refinish pieces I buy because I generally like "as found" stuff, but I don't like this color so I'll probably "restore it."

Barrow Maori art boook

DTBC and Tradewinds matchbooks

Two Schirman's and an unmarked Schirmanesque piece:

Coco Joe's lot. Didn't think I had the letter opener, so I as required, I bought both.
Doh! Had it. Haven't accidently repeated in a while. Overpaid, too...

Cement Marq tiki:

This tiki was too unique to pass on:

Doesn't look like an exotic wood.

It has a dual sided carved feature thing going on:

Abstract pattern on back:

Harvey's Sail away and a Latitude 20 Torrance Omc mug

I thought I saw the back of 3 Tiki Bob's from afar, but the were only Latitude 20 Hula Girl mugs...

Beachbum Burt's glass:

I also got a large set of Philipino Ku fork/spoon to refashion as a gate handle.

Welcome back PTD!
Buzzy Out!

killer finds...all from one place

forgot to take a pic of the 2 seat couch, ill post it in my Home Tiki Bar posts

Hey Jon That furniture is indeed killer! Did you get it with the cushions pictured? I've purchased some pretty nice rattan "pretzel" chairs but they had the rattiest cushionsI'd ever seen.
Nice finds.

Nui- yes, those are the original cushions but I might replace them.
They are very old and smell strange. It makes my bar need open windows.
I washed the covers but it's the cushions (they are as thick and heavy like a mattress).
The elderly lady I obtained them from said the set was her grandfathers. He lived in Oahu.
I also got a bunch of Tapa from her. I'm working on a new project for my garage.
Ill post pics of it under my home bar post soon.
Take care,
Jon

Storyboard carving of a what appears to be a man tied to a stake. Huts on stilts, large chickens, palm trees, people holding weapons and tropical birds are all deeply carved into the wood.

Great finds everybody. I enjoy checking this stuff out. :D

Got this interesting looking tiki recently - kinda reminds me of a troll. Seems to have some good age on it:

Looking at the original that this guy was based on, I can't help but feel that the carver was making a point in portraying him as such a chubster :)

In Tiki-carving the head, as the seat of mana, was usually oversized, sometimes 1/3 of the whole figure. That's why Tikis with naturalistic, normal head-to-body proportions look slightly wrong, often. It also gives Tikis a kinship with caricatures and cartoons that inspired many mid-century Tiki artists.

2 cannibal forks, mug from the Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort in Maui, wakahuia (carved Maori box), menu from November 19, 1965 S.S. Mariposa, leather bound Hawaii book from 1961, carved arrow, menehune necklace from Aulani and mural print from Aulani.

Detail on leg.

American Girl tiki statues and tiki torches that light up.

Tiny American Girl tiki mugs.

Finally found a rounder...

Alameda Antique Fair...Got this guy bundled with four green TV Big Shots...

Nice John, I saw that one but had to pass since I need to fix the ones I already have :) That one is in excellent condition.

Here's my score - no markings, but I've seen it in some Don the Beachcomber menus:

It's a little smaller than my other scorpion bowls:

Here's the one I mentioned, in a DTB menu:

-Trad'r Bill

Just matchbooks this week:

I'm getting real close to 200 different tiki matchbooks in my collection now. I'm a tiki style purist and do not include any Hawaiian matchbooks in that count, unless they have a tiki image on them, that is.

Hey Hang10: What was that Voyagers book you posted last week?

Buzzy Out!

Buz-
Voyagers (Paperback)
Herb Kawainui Kane
Great photos of his paintings
Autographed front cover on a sticker, but they might all be.

Jon

Ps- killer matchbook finds, I don't seem to find many.

Bill,
Funny thing is that I've passed on that bowl at least twice at Alameda...I liked it and the price was fine...I just thought it was a TV knock-off or re-glaze and room is becoming an issue...Missed the Beachcomber connection...Nice Score!

TM

Found this guy at an antique store today for $6.54 after tax... Perfect condition

Too cool T mat!

She might not be much to look at, but she's in the Hall China brochure for Chinese, Japanese and Polynesian items.
Judging by the dark knot on her throat, she's not just one of many, she's THE one.

I posted shots of the brochure in the Polynesian restaurant china thread.

I found this little guy sitting in a log pile in someones backyard on Kauai...

Thanks Bill!!

Nice find DAGG... :)

Well I told the Buzz I never find matches and it started raining.

Wife found this HEAVY Moai while I was at work.
She is getting good at hunting.

Then she sent me this photo

I froze and asked for more pics...
Later I received these via text,
She said "Look what I found"

What a wife...

I still have to dust if off, but it looks great.

I know, I know, not a Tiki, but I like it and I will pretend there is a Moai inside at the wheel
:)

The best part..................................... only $4.00

:) :) :)

And I have to put it together right
There are a couple pieces not attached yet
:)

Wow oh wow, I think tiki covers pirates and their ships. That is so cool. Wendy

H10,
I have an almost identical moai. Note the differences in the shoulders area. Wonder what the original looked like.
When I first saw mine (in a thrift store) I thought it was hideous.Mine had been "drybrushed" with various colors including gold paint. I was gonna leave him behind but my tikiqueen insisted that I buy it. I'm glad as this moai has grown on me and is quite at home here in the Happy talk Lounge.
Mahalo for posting your finds.

NUU- killer
When I went through the entire Witco post looking to find the ship, I saw the same Moai a couple times in the background
Cool

Jon

Nice find! In my humble opinion, Witco ships are more 'tiki' than a whole lot of the tikis created nowadays...

HB- I dig it too...

Todays finds, total of $6.00
:)

Book

2 candles

Sweet LP

Old paper

more

hang10tiki when we come to Las Vegas next we are just going to hunt tikis at your place! Wendy

:)

Buzz,
After I told you that I don't find many matches....well....
You must be good luck.

I went through about 5000 and found these.

jon

almost forgot the postcards...

Hang10,

Pretty good paper score! Was that at a Vegas paper show?

Here are some of my recent finds from the Arcadia paper show and the intereweb.

The Arcadia show was just around the corner from Bahooka, so I went by to pay my last respects on Sunday

Before heading over to the Tonga Hut for a Rufus!

DC

found all of this at the same store- vintage ku tiki earrings, cocojoes necklace and tiki bracelet/earrings combo.....

Tipsy McStagger I think we have the matching sweater holders to your earrings. Wendy
