Have not seen one with a sticker before.

Beautiful mug and great color. Nice that is still has the sticker.

CONGRATS!!!

Outstanding find TS.!
Where are you taking your wife for dinner?
Happy New Year!

T

Yeah Hang10 my wife is getting good at finding, But then you have been finding lots.
She will get most of the money anyway if/when we sell it, heck it's all our money at this point.
I had stopped looking for mugs as we have too many and you don't find good ones that often.
The Frankoma glazes are awesome!

Good Luck Hunters!

That Frankoma sticker is the first I've seen too. I'm going to send your photo on to Joniece Frank and see if they made them for an anniversary. Congratulations. Please contact me if you decide to sell it. Wendy

tikiskip I just got off the phone with Joniece Frank. She said the sticker was for Frankoma's 40th anniversary of being in business. The year was 1973. I asked her is they went on every piece of pottery made that year and she said no that it was hit and miss. They made some stickers and if anyone thought about it they would grab one and stick it on. It's possible that your War God is the only one that got the sticker because so few War Gods were made.

Again Congratulations, Wendy

That is a wonderful end of the year present!

Not only a War God, but a Cultured Pearl model to boot. That's a great find! Just goes to show that there are still some treasures out there if you keep your eyes peeled.

PP

found this four foot tall tiki painting at the swap meet for 20.00 Im guessing its a good deal, lol

That is wild stuff, Thanks Wendy for the info.
You think all there is to know about tiki has been said and then new stuff pops up, to me that's the fun part.
I don't know if you have done this yet but have you documented all info you can get from Joniece
about their tiki mugs for tiki history sake?(like how many of each different styles did they make?)
Why the name Frankoma?
We are all getting older and stuff like that gets forgotten.
Maybe you Wendy need to start the Frankoma thread here on TC.

Just added...
The name Frankoma was created from Frank's last name and the last three letters of the state of Oklahoma.[4]

"Not only a War God, but a Cultured Pearl model to boot."
So not all of these were Cultured Pearls?
Thanks all!

So true, tikiskip.
Frankoma has a pretty informative Wikipedia page. I wish I had known to look for Club Trade Winds and the Cultured Pearl ceramics when I lived in Dallas. Norman, OK is about an hour drive from Dallas.
The coconuts I have in my collection are very heavy and well made. I actually use them because they are well made.

There are magazines that document everything Frankoma and five books you can get on Amazon.com. The magazine is called Pot and Puma. She was a contributor as was her sister Donna. It only stopped being published a couple of years ago. I've put some information on page one of my "other crafts" thread. Wendy

Not so much a find but a gift from my friend Tiki Vato. A parrot from the sadly now defunct Bahooka, hanging in his new home. Thanks buddy.

I found these two items at the same place- a fireplace tool holder and a sword. I don't have any info about them, I just thought they looked cool! I'm wondering if they're Witco.

T

Great finds! They are both Witco pieces......very nice and they seem to be in great condition too! :)

My flea market find of the day! The Tikis Pointed Headdress Mug. I was so worried that I might drop it so I wrapped it up like crazy in newspaper and double bagged it.

Very nice! Congrats Fm!

Thanks! I have the black Moai mug from there already, so I was pretty happy with this find. I naturally asked if they had more, but alas, they didn't.

here are my last finds of 2013

Otagiri moai & handcarved bamboo mugs. The bamboo guy has little legs and is carved out of a piece of bamboo. unfortunately it leaks now but will make a nice swizzle holder.

pair of beachcombers mugs

not tiki; but a bicentennial glass from the pub/pub-tiki

tiki fondue set from sourpuss

tiki ornament also from sourpuss

tiki poplights almost new in box with a couple vintage colored bulbs

little maori guy "moko"

or "Maui-a-tiki-tiki-a-taranga" if you aren't into that whole brevity thing.

I'm kind of excited about it. I really need to find a way to display my stuff...

Mid century Tretchikoff green lady! Found her for $7.99

N

does ebay count? this is my newest piece

So I've found one of those Poolside Pineapple white tiki mugs that Kahunaville used to carry. It's kinda low end, but my wife and I stayed at TI during our first Vegas trip, and we ate a bunch at Kahunaville, so I kinda thought I'd pick it up, even though it is kinda low end. And I've only ever seen the one. I'm wondering when did Kahunaville stop using them, and are they easy to find?

I missed a couple weeks of hunting due to illness, and another week before and after I got skunked. I finally broke the dry spell and got a couple things last week:

Maori carving:

Aku aku Boston matchbook I didn't have and a Beachbum burt's I did

An A-frame hut carving:

My best guess is that it is from Palau. Any other definitive ideas out there where it may have come from?

Buzzy Out!

Hey Buzzy, welcome back and I’m glad you’re feeling mo betta.
I found a piece similar to your hut a couple of years ago. My piece had a tall a-frame roof with a similar pattern only the roof on mine did not project towards the front. I found it along with a storyboard that had paperwork that indicated Pelau as it’s place of origin. Supports your thoughts or maybe just coincidence.

At Goodwill. $4.99 each.

Also picked up one those today ($10 thrift store)

What's the story with these things?

T

A bit of silliness I found at an estate sale today. Tonga after shower lotion! From 1967, with the original boxes. Fairly cheesy, but being two years older than me, I figured I'd pick them up. What I can't figure out is why in the world he kept them around, they being empty, and with the boxes. The person manning the register thought I was nuts for buying them.

I saw a lot of em while on a “WestPac” tour in the 60’s. They were from the Philippine’s and most souvenir stores had them for sale.
There’s a similar pair on display close to the hostess station at the top of the stairs at the Bali Hai -San Diego.
Don’t know what they were used for

Not silly or cheesy but awesome. You're not nuts, you're very lucky.

I agree with Sweet Daddy Tiki---these are great! Thanks for sharing the picture.
I am pretty sure there was a matching soap on a rope that went with those. I was trying to find the image I saved (I missed out on buying it) but it escapes me now. Really cool and different find.

T

I'm new to serious collecting, so I wasn't sure what others would think. I thought they were neat in that the had the boxes still, were two years older than myself, and were an odd item to have survived. Nice to see my instincts were good. grin If any one has any more information I'd be glad to here more about them.

New to serious collecting?

Here is my advice...collect what you love and what catches your eye.

DO NOT let ANYONE tell you what you found is not tiki enough for your collection or your home bar (if you have or plan on building one) and never care what anyone else thinks. EVER.Collect what you love and you will love your collection and that is really all that matters :)

Hope you keep sharing what you find!

I believe these are part of an Amway line that included Tonga Soap and Tonga Soap-on-a-rope (which you can find in the Book of Tiki)

The design is based on the classic Paul Marshall Products mug…

...which came in all sorts of forms, from patio lights to Tiki torches…

So these are definitely part of the original mid-century Tiki craze, and a cool find. Someone obviously liked the design so much that they kept the empty bottle.

Yes--that's was one of the photos I was looking for of the soap!

I have never seen those torches in plastic...I have a pair also and have always thought they were cool!

TS

Received this from my girlfriend for Christmas. It's a canvas print done by Colin Campbell, who was a Disney artist and did a lot of concept drawings for the Park.

and since she went to the one night only Special Event of the Tahitian Terrace, but could not secure the prop sign that wound up on ebay.... I made her a smaller one in the style of, versus identical.

We were both stoked!

T

Thanks for the info guys! That's awesome, I wouldn't have thought to look in the Book of Tiki. I seriously bought the three bottles on a lark. I thought they were kinda neat but I figured no one else would think anything of them. I guess I got my three dollars worth. Though my wife is going to kill me, because now I want the rest of the related items.

Cheers!

it's about time i aquired one of these.......the redwing pottery ku figure. bought on craigslist recently.

Just picked up this four face bowl. It is in the style of the Orchids of Hawaii one but the faces are the same color as the body. No marks. Would anyone know who made it?
