I don't usually post on this thread but I figured I would try it out. Had a good find day yesterday and thought I would post it.

Found these in a Thrift Store in Downtown Seattle...$2 for the Cigar Box and $1/ea. for the mugs (really).

The next thing I found was $26...It was done by a local artist here in Seattle. It is a re-purposed, leather bound book with new Gold Embossing. Just a killer piece of work in my opinion.

After many years of excuses and procrastination, I have found the
kick in the ass or piece I needed to finally begin my home tiki bar.

This Tapa, measuring about 14' x 12', is going to be my jumping off point.

This week's stuff:

17" Cock eyed PNG guy

7" Vanuatu Slit drum guy

18" Fiji? club. Same handle weave as the one I found a couple weeks ago

The Golden Mai Kai Chalace

It was all spray painted gold. Steel wool test seems to take it off fairly quickly

Some guy had a whole mess of woven Polynesian mats. Maybe a dozen of them. They looked like dance mats or something. Wrapped in one were about 10 pieces of tapa. A few were pretty bug ravaged, but I managed to get the few that were either not damaged, or barely damaged.

12' x 17' with no bug damage, one minor tear

2 - 4' x 6' no damage

5 x 8 with a small bug hole section in the middle crease.

this one is about 15 x 20 and has a lot of large salvageable sections in it

$10 for all of them pictured here! Got them in the freezer now in case any creepy crawlies were still in them...

Buzzy Out!

T

Ten bucks for all of them!? I'll give you $30 right now and pay the shipping myself! 200% profit, deal?

Yeah! And there I was hoping to walk with it all for my dream price of $50-60. When he said $10, I kind of got weak in the knees and hoped I'd heard right. If I would have known how cheap it all was, I probably would have taken the bad stuff too... Hopefully he'll be back next week and I'll have more time to dig. I had to do it all fast because there were these two dudes who saw me when I found the stash and they were trying to grab the good stuff from my pile as I was checking it out for damage. Damn buzzards!

Buzzy Out!

Buzz- next time just pull out your Fijian war club n take em out

So I had a bit of a score over the weekend. Found a fellow selling his collection on Craigslist. A lot of it is dross, but there were a few interesting pieces...

A pair of Coco Joe's, though both are missing the labels, more's the pity. Also couple of newer resin pieces. If any one knows anything about them...

Also a pair of plaster wall hangers...

Some more modern pieces, if any one knows the salt and pepper shakers or the short mug I'd be glad to know it

A fun little wooden fellow, maybe 16" inches tall... And a few other wooden pieces I'm not sure what to make of...

Some coconuts from Le Targeit... And a smattering of other ceramics. Shame there wasn't a mate to the tale pepper shaker...

And these guys. The Harvey's is kinda rough, but its the other ones I'm curious about. They appear to be hobiest pieces, as one of the mugs is marked '69 with some peoples names, likewise the tall fellow, '66 and something about good luck etc etc. Any info would be appreciated.

There was a bit of other stuff, bad Party City plastic tiki that will likely go to the Goodwill, some African and South American stuff the guy THOUGHT was tiki, but I'm reasonably pleased with the find as a whole.

R

Can't tell you about many of them except for two...and if anyone knows better or different, please correct me here.

The figures below are vintage Napco ceramic tiki statues. It's obviously made from a mold cast of the one on the right.

The next one is probably a hobbiest mug (or a Seattle Worlds fair mug?) that is originally attributed to Andres Bumatay. I actually have a set of 6 of these that I found at a thrift store. The photo is from my collection on Ooga Mooga.

hopefully that helps a little.

I MADE A FIND!!
Well, one worth talking about anyway. Two Sundays ago I was doing my weekly walk through of a little antique shop that is on the way home from this house my son plays D&D at on the weekends, and lo and behold in a dark corner, about 6 feet off the ground and partially obscured by a crappy plastic doll house from the 1980's I see this!

Carefully removing it from the wall and looking at the back I see the price, $2.00! Definitely in my price-range!
The downside, this thing it Filthy! If i had to guess I would say it must have been thumb-tacked to a wall in a dusty warehouse while people sat in a half circle around it chainsmoking for 40 years.

So, I really want to get it cleaned up and re-framed in something that will protect it, and that doesn't look like it came off a clearance rack from Woolworth's circa 1978. If anyone has any helpful information, advice, thoughts, suggestions of things Not to do, that would be Greatly appreciated!

This-un's a keeper!

T

Thanks Rvictor. More info than I had before. Cheers!

The month of April has been kinda of slow. Found these four mugs this month. The Ku is from the Mai Kai. I suppose it's pretty new as it has a Made In China sticker on the bottom.

Desert ceramics plain coconut mug

Orchids of Hawaii R-13 A

Coco Joe's "Aloha Hawaii" hula girl ashtray #137

nice find hang10!!

Picked up this tapa yesterday, and it's huge. It's a little strange though. The imagery seems Western. I don't know much about tapa cloth. Can any body fill me in on what I have here? Trying to convince the little lady to let me keep it. The woman at the estate sale suggested cutting it up and selling some of it and keeping the rest of it for myself, but that makes me cringe a bit.

These look like eagles and lions to me, maybe a crown? I dunno...

This looks like a crest or seal but I don't recognize it. The trees, sun and moon and star seem like odd imagery too.

Also not sure what to make of the birds and numbers going up the sides...

You have a Tongan Ngatu. You can tell because the crest on it is the official seal of Tonga.

The pine trees are Holo Paini, the motif representing the Norfolk Pines that line the street to the Royal Palace.

The Bird is Ikale Tahi, the Sea Eagle, the Tongan national bird.

the Lion is synomymous with the King of Tonga.

I don't know what the pokey looking thing under the bird is. It's common, but I don't know what it's supposed to represent.

Found a tiki mask with a little information about it on the back, it's from Fatu Hiva

Tiki Eyes?

I looked up Buzzy on Wikipedia

"Famous Tiki Man full of information"

Thanks Buz! I knew someone amongst the big brains here would be able to tell me something! My next question though, is what would something like this have been intended for? Cream, was it made his tourist peace, where they going to cut it up and make skirts and of it, what?

And Nauga, that's awesome! Looks like you found a tiki chibi. grin

RR

I have one of these but mine is still filled with booze. There is a post somewhere on here about those things.

Pretty exciting finding something here in Aus. that isn't maori tourist stuff. Found at an antique store in Queensland when i went up there for a few days to visit friends. Appears to be a hobbyist's version as there are no markings at all.

Saw this cool Koa wood and resin coffee table at an antique store in Petaluma Ca, and only five thousand dollars, yikes!

I didn't find any tapa this week. Still a little soon to call it a drought, but I'm worried nonetheless...

I hadn't gone to Goodwill in months, but when I went by the other day, the voice in my head said to go. Spider sense tingling, I found this crappy Indonesian tiki on the shelf full of baskets.

It was either the tiki, or the 3 pair of work shorts I bought that made my spider sense go like that. Still can't tell which was the trigger...

Polyart unmarked Schirman piece.

I have two like this: one marked poly art, and the other not marked. This one is slightly larger than those two.

Just some ramblings about tapa off the top of my head:
Tapa didn't work well for clothes because moisture would separate the layers. They would have used it as decoration and hung it up. They're often made for wedding and funerals. Some were packed away that had important historical value, like "the King gave this piece to Grandpa..."
Tapa is really labor intensive, so it has a value to them for that reason. The larger the piece, the more the value. Most tapa is sectioned out in predetermined sizes. Your piece is cool because it has both edges. That was the standard layout, two white borders, Design up middle, numbered up the edge. All these are standard sizes. That's why we get so many pieces that have a 15 foot dimension in them. The numbers mark how big the piece is. Larger piece= more numbers=more value. Your piece, based on it's size would have a special name attributed it. Like half sheet, full sheet, quarter share, based on how many numbers.
Plus, there is this whole cultural thing going on so far as the value. If you got no tapa on Tonga, you're poor. Rich people got a lot of tapa. When an important guest would come over, you would slice off a slab of your big tapa and give it to your guest to show how rich you are. Kind of like the Native American potlatch give away deal.
Yours is pretty standard with nothing real unique about it, so I'd cut it up and do stuff with the pieces. Unless you want a whole wall of your house done in tapa. I've paid between $15-35 for pieces like that, about that size. I'd cut it as needed, though.
After WWII, they added a few motifs of planes and stuff. I'd like a piece of tapa with a P-38 on it. They're out there somewhere... There's also a Hailey's Comet one I'd like to get some day.

Found a couple things last weekend.

Looks like Witco, 2 feet tall but no marks.

And six of these mugs.

They're not tiki but I like them. Couldn't find them on Ooga-Mooga, no marks or stickers, anyone know anything about them?

aloha, tikicoma

Found this on top of my wife's car.

Last week's finds

[ Edited by: exquisitecorpse 2015-05-08 17:04 ]

Nothing too spectacular, but a friend got this for me at an estate sale. She knows I'm into Tiki but didn't realize I had actually been to The Tonga Room. Wish I had bought souvenirs, now.

Picked up a Trader Vic's Fog Cutter Speckled Mug

Is there anyway to tell how old it actually is besides the 1963 date on the bottom ?

The 1963 date is the date the mold was made. The mug was most likely made in a number of runs over the years. My thought is that the lack of detail in your mug may mean it is a late production as the molds tended to wear out with continued production. I think pining down an actual date beyond 1963 may be difficult. Nice find though.

Latest acquisitions.

This week's stuff:

14" Maori patu

11" Hawaiian wood Tiki

Never had one like this before

10" Indonesian Toraja House storyboard. On the back it has written in pen "Celebes, Indonesia". That island changed names to something else in 1949

Stamped Trader Vic's coconut and a handled Westwood

Don't worry Hang10, it'll all find you soon enough! If it was easy, it wouldn't be so rewarding

Holy crap Ben! I can't believe you posted that! It's a good thing you edited that before anybody else saw it or you would get kicked off TC. (Not that anybody would notice since so few people post here any more.) Was it because this is page 666? It's an EVIL page and made you post that.

You and Dan always have an open invitation, but it's not that impressive to you guys because I only have 8-9 tiki mugs. Bulllet said Dan and I would probably have a lot to talk about with our record collections too. I have a ton of Zappa and Beatles rarities...
