Diane Curtis with a sideways tiki mask

NUDISM TODAY, #14, 1966

This was a bit out of my price range so this is just the auction photo - the tiki on the cover was seen previously in my post of this unknown magazine.

Very nice example once again, martian-tiki!

And now at least you know the issue number so that you can wait around till a better-priced one comes on the market.

Searching through auctions....well...This has a tiki in it.

Whoa! Martian-tiki! Super weird! What's the story behind that picture?

The only story is sometimes more than hula girls show up on ebay.

ebay Item number: 200523360219
"This auction is for a group of 3 candid black and white photographs from an early bodybuilding competition, circa 1955, in what is almost certainly Hawaii. There are three bodybuilders posing in front of a giant Tiki carving of some sort. The images are 3 by 3 inches, on single weight paper"

That "tiki" was on the grounds of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Hawaii and is "pre-tiki" in origin. It is made of cement even though it looks like wood and represents Kamuualii, the Shark God.

He shows up in quite a few old snapshots from the 1910s through the 1960s. The fact that he never seemed to age through the decades made me suspect he might not be wood. If you look closely at the base, you can see the sculpture marks in the cement. I've got a few photos of him myself. Thinking of doing a post about him. Phil Roberts knows about him as well if I remember right.

Pretty important sculpture as it may be the first pre-runner of the new "Tiki Age" (after the 1800s). However a huge gap between when this sculpture was created in the 1910s and the first tikis carved Ed Brownlee in Hawaii in the 1950s that sparked the Tiki movement in America.

spy-tiki that looks like Virginia Bell - though I'm not certain.

The model is Joyce Gibson who was quite prolific throughout the late 60's 70's and making comebacks in the 80's, 90's up to probably 2000. She was in playboy with Arnold Schwarzenegger and on tv in Mork & Mindy and Night Court.

And she posed with a tiki.

So is there anyone who recognizes these sort of wall masks?

(I'm afraid my books to consult on this sort of thing are stuck in a box...)

That's a Mexican tourist mask. Not tiki, unfortunately. But they end up in a lot of tiki bars. There's even one in the Tiki Ti out here in Hollywood.

Still, good enough for this thread, and an excellent photo shoot.

A sad specimen of tiki erotica devolution. That tiki looks like some sort of chinese dragon troll.
SKIN & BONES Vol.3/No.1 CALGA PUBLISHERS 1971

The only positive thing I can say about this era of magazines is that Ed Wood Jr. fiction shows up a lot in them.
(Not necessarily this title but this genre)

And he was a better short story writer by far than screenplay writer/director.

martian-tiki, while I like this thread, I think it just crossed from titillation to pornographic
which in "my opinion only", in Tikiland there is a line between Sexy & Sleazy
and things just got sleazy.

I don't believe I have a right to tell you what you can & cannot post & I don't believe in censorship or am I a prude, I just think this may be a bit much for Tiki Central & that is all I will say about it.

just my 5 cents,(Inflation)

I'd consider it an observation of the 1970's devolution - which was the intended point of posting it. It was also something I really had mixed feelings about posting anyway so that it got moderated is all the better. (It was just one lack of a censor box away from being not unprecedented for this thread - which is how I misjudged the community standard.)

The 1970s was a major turning point for American society's views on sexuality
in an post Hippie/Free Love/Swingers era, The Vietnam war, The introduction of Graphic Sex
to the mainstream "Deep Throat" and the "Me Generation" i.e. Werner Erhard & EST

It became a time of instant gratification (Drugs & Sex) when society "Wanted, what they wanted, When, they wanted it"
It was the post "loss of Innocence" era and the end of Mid Century Tiki replaced by Disco,Fast Food & over-produced arena Rock.

Adults grew impatient with Titillation and wanted to get right to the "Act" itself.
So ended the Golden era of Erotica, when it was left more to the imagination.

And this is why the 1970s sucked!

My personal opinion is that we don't need a "Bright line" test for such subjective issues and that "it is all good" as it has at least a tangential reference to 60s erotica. In addition, there is a warning of nudity & erotica posted in the heading (which serves the dual purpose of advertising something really "juicy" inside, as well.)

BTW, the US Supreme Court had a difficult time defining such matters.
In Miller v. California, the US Supreme Ct discussed the 3-pt test of no literary, scientific or literary value, and appealing to the purient interest, in order to be obscene and not protected by the 1st Amendment.

I have yet to see anything really bad on this thread...and believe me, I've seen enough porn to know. We take our kids to museums which have paintings of naked nubile women...that's ok? The human body is beautiful and erotic. There's nothing wrong with that. Its that Puritanical side to our society that still has us believing that parts of our bodies are "dirty". You gotta admit, sleaze back then was pretty darn tame compared to now--almost quaint.

uhh, yeah what he said.

Camera in Hawaii
by Peter Gowland

1963 edition

First edition information from abebooks
"Waikiki, Glamor, Underwater, Beach Girls, Nudes, After Dark, Surfing, Melting Pot, Waterfalls". Whitestone No. 42. 1957.

Gowland was an amazing photographer. Intersting, he shot many nudes in company with his partner, his wife.

The 1970's can be summed up as what happened after the 1960's! Same crap, different package.

Truthfully people spend too much time looking for approval trying to be or find out what the marketed image tells them they should be instead of just being. It costs us dearly in dissatisfaction and unhappiness since there is nothing to it and not enough to fix what the very problems it creates in us.

I ought to know, I was as guilty as anybody else who ever donned bell bottoms and hated disco with a passion. Now it's all a little bit like The National Enquirer; Something I ignore don't waste my time on.

Silk and skin. A natural body, and an absolutely sensual beauty like some I remember and became impassioned for. Even then, most of the time could only look, long and wonder who they really were underneath. There were some memories of things outside of the box.

Seeing her as she was, That I miss.

I hope she's still alive, I hope she's not unhappy like some ex-fold outs I have known,if I'd have known her in 1972 I could have only hoped she liked 15 year old males, which wasn't likely.

Sleaze is unappealing!

This ad appeared often in mid 60s to early 70s magazines.

I know there's an ad for Mai Kai waitresses on 8mm out there too on a tiki blog I can't find right now.

Martian dude, are you drunk when you post pics? what are you thinking? Maybe im too old.
These last 2 pics of young, and under age females is disgusting, perverted, and border on child porn. Like I tell my kids if it gives you a funny feeling in your stomach that something aint right, maybe its not. Thats what it did when I saw them.
I know there is a warning to the post but does it need to include one that includes naked under age females?
To each his own.
Aloha.

And then there are people like me.

Peter Gowland is great. I have a few photography books by him. You can be sure that all of his models are legal. As for the other, she could be underage, especially, given the sleazy ad and the era, so that's an unknown. Still, it's a retro look at what we were advertising in the backs of newsstand magazines and comic books.

I don't know where Tiki Pop's allegations are coming from. Did martian-tiki post something and remove it after that comment? There's nothing about that ad or the Peter Gowland photo that screams underage to me.

It "appeared" to be an image of an underage female as according to U.S. laws. It's only "disgusting" and "perverted" if that is what is in the mind of the person viewing it.

I agree. Just because she looked young doesn't mean she was. Every actor playing a high schooler on Glee is in their mid-20s.

I don't see it. Then again, girls from the 1960's-70's always look about 40 to me.

Wow, like what a bringdown .......
Did you concerned citizens not read the title of this thread ?
enough...
Or start a discussion thread but unless your posting EXOTIC photos of scantily clad hula girls ,dont bring all the fun out of life with your anti-fun bible waving lol TIKI CENTRAl is an escape isn't it ?
NOW ,BRING ON THE DANCING GIRLS ,my coctail is getting warm....

I saw the photo (shrugs shoulders) but the ones that are under are the girls in places like Papua new Guinea who are never wearing a shirt.

Bet this would look great as a velvet!!

You mean like this?

Or if you prefer sunny weather...

I was watching the movie Pagan Island and recognized a tiki mask on the wall of a hut. I suppose the sea god is what gets all of the attention. The sea god was designed by Lewis Van Der Car who is discussed a few pages back http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=1389&forum=1&start=270&hilite=pagan%20island , I need to reupload some stuff on him....

This was one of my early posts where I'd just throw it all in a zip file. As you can see same wall, mask, and gun. The photo is likely by Bunny Yeager who did the casting for the movie and probably took some photos as long as the trouble of getting models was already done (which was a typical practice it appears.) The photo below it is from the movie - and likely the third picture is another photo taken on the set.
