Latest news on the Valley Ho Resort and re-opening of Trader Vic's in Scottsdale:

"Developer Scott Lyon of MSR Properties, who called the Valley Ho one of the Valley's most important historic assets, said construction would start in April and should be completed by September 2005.

Trader Vic's could open as early as January 2005, he added."

YES!

Valley Ho Gets City's Blessing

I thought we were going to get a Trader Vic's here in downtown San Diego-go but the local owners have decided to abandon Vic & go with their own idea of a tiki bar or as they phrased it "an upscale tiki style bar & bistro"...I guess whatever that is has got to be better than another Starbucks!

E

Valley Ho? Is that like the Town Pump?

sorry, I had to,
em.

C

Ya mean Town Pimp?

No, em, it's like Westward Ho! Not much of a western fan myself so that's all I know.

Speaking of Vic's, does anyone have a picture of the Trader Vic's in Toronto?

Ditto that for the Detroit location. Anybody have the goods?

Demolition permit was issued last week for the old Stars restaurant in San Francisco. Vic's triumphant return to San Francisco begins!

I live in Philadelphia, and, while I would love to see a Trader Vics in the city, hearing that one may be coming to AC is really exciting. Actually, I would almost prefer that it be there... The Jersey shore has got an AMAZING retro vibe to it, and a Trader Vics would only enhance that. Please keep us posted!

Good karhma attached to Stars should be a good omen for Trader Vics' triumphant return. The Civic Center - Tenderloin location seemed to work well.

You MUST be talking about places like Wildwood and Sea Isle City! I was born and lived in and around Atlantic City until 1988 (I was in my 20's) and getting out of that casino infested rat-hole was the best decision I ever made. I have not set foot in AC since 1994 but last time I was there it was nothing but a cesspool of garbage, beaches full of hospital waste, and seagulls the size of turkeys...not to mention the rudest, saddest excuses for human beings I have ever met in my life. Maybe Trader Vics is looking more at the casino crowd to be in a profitable location but I can think of lots of classier places in NJ. Maybe AC has changed a lot in the last 10 years?? I suppose anything's possible...we'll see.

How about a Trader Vics in Dallas?? The old location is still intact and can be rented for private parties...tiki's and all!

Here's pics of Trader Vic's Thailand - scroll down to the bottom for the pix - most of the pix are of the rest of our holiday. The Vix Pix are at the very end.

Ah! check in about exactly the middle of the page too for more trader vics pics - for some reason the program juggled the photo order a bit~!

juno,
no need to worry AC is exactly the same, if not worse, then you left it. i presently live in OC which despite their continual raping of their past architecture and roots is not as bad as AC.... yet. (hey GRACE KELLY lived here!!)
all of this in mind i would still love a trader vic's 15 minutes from my house!!!

This item was in Leah Garchik's column in the SF Chronicle today:

Harry de Wildt gave a birthday lunch for Denise Hale at Campton Place last Wednesday, at which John Traina (that's all the social stuff, now let's get to the news) said that all $50,000 shares in the new Trader Vic's have been sold, and the next step is $3.5 million in renovations to the site, the old Stars. Chipping in has a nice old-fashioned ring to it, but it also means that shareholders are likely to have special privileges, which is traditional, too. The old Trader Vic's was a place where everybody was served the same bongo bongo soup, but outsiders couldn't help notice that the swells got better tables.

Great news. Just hope the one they open in NYC is as cool as the original/vintage versions.

Does anyone know what is happening in the space formerly occupied by Trader Vic's NYC in the basement of the Plaza Hotel? I heard it's still not being used. Are the furnishing and decorations still intact? Might warrant an investigation.

I hope the new cash is invested in a hurry. Trader Vic's has 12 months before the next crawl.

Unfortunately the house she lived in is gone. We had our family wedding reception at a family member's house that is right across the street from where the Grace Kelly house was recently demolished. They are building another new OC McMansion in its place. I guess it could be worse: They could build a WalMart there instead of a house.

Hey, Ek, we'll be in OC for a week in July. If you're around, let's meet up.

An off the record comment from a Vic's employee is that Arizona is next (now surprise), then Vegas (no location yet) and in a few years, Hawaii (also no location yet).
Also, Trader Vic's drink book is being re-issued!!!!

My tiki kharma must be dead on lately because I rarely read the paper but the cool dining section caught my eye in the lunchroom today. Read and enjoy!

Link to the Hotel Valley Ho website were Trader Vic's will be located has finally been updated with construction pics. I drive by frequently...they are busy!

That is incredibly promising. Sounds like Vic's is franchising again. With a chef who wants to keep it old school and set in such a beautiful hotel, my optimism meter is running high!

This is a beautiful hotel, looking at it from the website.
I did not know it existed.
A definite Tiki Central gathering when Trader Vics opens!

keep snooty michael bauer out of the place!

Maybe a little late for a response, but I just noticed the post. I live a few blocks from the Plaza, and there is currently nothing there. There was a nightclub there for a while (I went in out of curiosity, but it was heartbreaking to see), so it is definitely not intact.

I am hoping and praying for a return to NYC of the good Trader. Interestingly enough, there is still a brass sign next to the fire hose "siamese" connection that says "Trader Vic's". I am getting a digital camera next week and I want to get a picture of that. I can post it if anyone cares.
