MarkusK you and my wife were right so I fixed it I think.
What you think?
This will also make this light much stronger, Thanks for the tip.

T

Here's my latest, I think it maybe my greatest.
Been working on it for over a year off and on.
Making the scenes on each leg of the starfish is a blast!
This one is Three d, Got stuff on the inside globe, stuff on the outside globe.
The starfish are HUGE and are from the Kahiki, hard to get em this big.
Going to hold onto this light as my wife wants it.
I am not done with this light yet but will be soon, Then I will show the glow.

HAPPY SHARK WEEK TC!!!!

Shark Week! He's smiling! :D I really like the double starfish with the mini dioramas, very cool. I like the "sea creature secretions" look with the shells and such in it too.

This entire page rocks.......

Wow!! The sea life lamp is amazing!!!! I love it!

Incredible work John!!

I can see your passion in all these wonderful lights!!

T

Thank you Lena and Jeff.
It was great to see you both again.

T

I was at my old friends house the other day, we used to skateboard together make ramps, Go to the principals office ect..
And he's still into skating at 50+ so he tells me about the Coleman slide a new trick he picked up.
Now this guy grew up with me and was skatin back when I was, he got Skateboarder mag, well
our pal Coleman took the Ty slide (as in Ty Page, ya I know he's not Dogtown and sucks) but
this guy Coleman put a slight tweek on the Ty slide and Wham Coleman slide.
Whos Ty Page, what Ty Page? Gone, Ty did it first, Heck Andy was there at the time and he even forgot.

And so it goes with the tiki creators here today gone tomorrow.
It's why a lot of us create, as kind of a legacy you leave behind.
And it's a big part of why I do it.

So here's to you Ty (you tight shorts wearin so and so)
And here's to you Wayne Coombs.
You both were creators with your own style, and I won't forget that style that is yours alone.
(even if that bonehead Andy does)

I think Wayne Coombs put it best.

“It has bugged me forever ... to the point of being real grouchy about it,” Coombs told Rockledge writer and photographer Chris Kridler during a 2006 interview. He also said, “imitation is the sincerest proof of plagiarism.”

Been wanting to get a float in this light I made back in 2005 for some time.
Not done yet, Would like to light it up as well.
Then it would be a light in a light.
Hand tied float by me just need a small light. Led?

Cool rain lamp, cute little float light too. I think LED is an excellent choice, no heat and not too much light. You probably want a white LED instead of red since the float is already colored. I don't know how your electronics knowledge is (mine isn't much) but you can find 120v LED circuit diagrams so you don't run a separate battery. A small neon bulb may be an option too ~ they flicker but that might not be a bad thing here (the indicator lamp on power plug-in strips is often neon)

T

Here are some new ones.
Thanks Mike, and you are right about the led light.
I think I will need to start over and make a whole new rain light.

"Let TIKISKIP Yaba Daba Do" you a light......

Ahhhhhh
The knot master is back!!!
Great stuff as always.

Jon

T

Thanks Hang10.
Here are some floats all lit up.
Going up on ebay Monday night.

I've got about 30 globes of all shapes and sizes that I intended to turn into lights.

And then I met a glass blower. So they're all wrapped in paper, and I'm debating on whether or not to just re-donate them to Goodwill.

Totally off topic, sorry. Love the lamps, man, and your how-to.

T

Thanks Hale!!
And when you get that branding iron done I will
make a light named the Hale boyland barrel.

Here's more lights.
Tied with a thicker rope.

[ Edited by: tikiskip 2012-12-12 07:09 ]

Skip,

Do you have directions for the rope part of your net lights? I did some macrame (sp?) plant hangers a million years ago so if I had some directions MAYBE this is something I could attempt if I could find some appropriate rope.

Thanks!
Lori

T

I do get PMs asking how I do my.. well everything.
And have helped some out.
BUT..
some time ago I got this PM..
And about five other PMs from him.

"Tiki ship you can dye nylon rope or cord with tea to give it that vintage look.
What do you use to cut the hole in the glass ball?
What kind of spray do you use to fog the inside?
I am not selling mine for profit, they are to hang in my back yard"

The guy did not even get my name right.
This person now sells more float lights than I do per year.
So I do want to show all I know, but fear creating more competition.
I don't make my living at this but selling these lights help me pay
for the stuff that helps me make these lights.
In time I want to show all I know, as I do like to help others with this stuff.
But when I help em and they cut in on sales well, I don't know.
Thank you.
Happy Holidays!!

Ha! Sounds like 1961Suck. Trad'r Bill had issues with him as well.

Your lamps are killer. I wish I had the ability to hang stuff from my ceiling because there are a few lamps of yours that are on my wish list. Hopefully one day!

Love the heavy rope ones the best--I can not even imagine what you do to get those knots so even but I appreciate you sharing!

Thank you Miss Dee.:)

T

Thanks marcus thorn comming from a great carver like you made my day!
Don't think I have a light in Australia yet.
I need one of your Litte Buddy meets the Headhunters, not like there's two.
Awesome work.

Cool, man. You've got that burnt effect NAILED.

A rainlamp, that is so great to see.

Hey, I've been using the awesome lamp I got from you for a nightlight, during the winter, in the huge garage where I'm staying at now. It works great... and so moody!

T

Ya Hang10 I made that guy for my restaurant years ago.
Want to make a tiki disco ball.

Here is my first light of 2013.
I was inspired by Sevn Kirstens Book of Tiki and Miguel Covarrubias art in said book.
Had a globe that had these dots that needed to be coverd up.
So here it is the Covarrubias globe light.
Much more to come this year.
Tiki pickings have been good just waiting to get outside
and build.
Going to be some cool new stuff.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

"Roses are red, these floats are blue, Send me some money and they belong to you"..."TIKISKIP"

I love your stuff, tikiskip!
But I am putting my foot down...Tiki & Disco should never mix, never!

T

Ha! ATP I was a long hair rocker when I was young then went to punk bars in the 80s.
But my rocker friends and I took our fake IDs to a disco one night, There we were with all our greasy
long hair.
But the ladies there were hot! they had those skin tight silk dresses on, made us forget about
Lita Ford.
Sooo.. we sent these three girls drinks the waitress set down the drinks at the girls table
and right after that the three girls got up and walked away.
Dam we felt stupid.
But not too stupid to go over with our tails between our legs and drink those drinks.
Then we left and went to the Rock and Roll Palace.
Good times.
But.. just think if tiki went disco maybe those down years in the 70s and 80s would have shown
us white and chrome tiki, huge disco tiki temples.
This ones for you ATP...

Can't pass this one up.

I miss you Crazy Mamas!!!!

Dam Big Kahuna you beat me to it.
Yeah I tied that globe myself.
Also found that a 15 watt amber bulb made the globe look
older and had a softer glow.
But you need to change the bulb from the bottom as the hole in the top is too small.

The amber bulb is a good idea. How, on Earth, do you manage to get those knots so uniform?

:D :D :D :D

Skipper
That's sweet

T

At this time I think I have tied over 50 floats.
As you tie more and more you get faster and more
uniform.
So I guess practice makes perfect.
I do have a method of tyeing these floats that makes it easier to make them even.
And try the amber bulb I think you will like it.

J

Hi! This is just incredible work!! Any chance at all of getting one of those napkin, umbrella/straw holders from one of the first pages of this thread?? I would be most interested... thanks!

Thanks jimbo020,
That is one of those things I make that everybody wants.
Heck I don't even have one.
Made only one and Hakalugi has it.
Did start to make another like a year and a half ago.
don't know if I can make one again.
Here's a pic of the one I started.
But these take so long don't think I will sell these again.
Wish I had never sold the first one.
Thanks for asking.
You got a great start on your bar there.

TIKISKIP: Maker of TIKI bar lighting, Let me make one for you.

That is a hell of a caddy, Skip.

Thanks for getting back to me Skip. Your imagination and the execution of your projects is an inspiration for sure!! Thanks for posting a pic of the raw ingredients to the napkin holder! I will have to drag the Mrs. to some crafting stores... :) I do have one specific question, what do you use to achieve the high gloss and sealant on these? I have read allot of your posts and I see the spray on shelac is used allot. Anyhting else?? and THANK YOU for your help!!! I will get some pics next summer of my newly remodeled tiki bar... :) Jim

[ Edited by: jimbo020 2013-01-12 05:50 ]

Thanks Jim,
I use amber shelac, It does not come in spray though. (The clear shelac does)
Every now and then I will spray a clear poly coat on it.
If you use this Shelac outside it will look like crap in
one year or less.
I would guess paint or an oil stain is best for out door use.
Will try to post more photos of the holder parts for you.
On your bar take it slow, Find a tiki here a light there.
Get stuff while on vacation so as to have a story of where you got said object.
Too many time people want an instant tiki bar and buy some in my mind stupid stuff.
I did this as well, Wait, take your time and get the good cool stuff.
But get what you like.
Don't just buy stuff to be buyin stuff, Unless it's one of my lights.:)
Here is the napkin holder I made long ago.

and get these.

T

Ha!
With all of the shameful self promoting ads I've made, I gotta say yes.
But as it is with all nutty artist types it can be hard to pin me down
somtimes.
I have no website,(Don't want to make a job of this)
Spring is the best time though, Thats when I start makin lights full force.
Pm me with ideas of what you want.
