Awesome work LLT, the variety in your recent work hasnt resulted in a lesser quality at all. And such a variety of mediums as well!

one complaint though - catching up on your thread after a while takes too long and causes sensory overload and brain malfunction!!!

BTW your drawing is on the way...Wife mailed it today! I am honored you would put aside some wall space for some LLT art! :)

It arrived safe and sound. I wish that I had more wall space to set aside; maybe I'll remove the mirrors from the ceiling. :o :D

Outstanding woodburns (?). Ken, the fires of hell are clearly on your side, flowing from the end of your nuclear-tipped glow-in-the-dark BurnMax 2000! Burn. Burn away my friend. Burn us a path to freedom from the Old Ways.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY OVERCOME.....
BRRRRRBRRRRBURRRRRR!
Thank you ALL for showing such kindness
to such an Art-Tard! YAY!

TikiThomas-you never showed up at the CHOP!
Now you just get the TOE!
lucky you...

GOGO!
Thanks for the props pal! :)
haven't seen you and Dani in what feels like ages!
I miss BOTH of your smiles and warm happy friendship!
:):):):)
As for being an Energizer bunny.....
I just don't wanna be sittin on my deathbed
cryin,"just 50 more paintings! just 50 more before i go!"
So i figgered...do as many as i can now! :)

harro!

Variety is le spice of life...
ruts are no fun!
Who wants to get in a rut?
"Not I",said the pig!
(waaaaay old stupid joke.can't even remember the rest of the joke
but that was the punchline! Bowana? joke help!)
Plus, there's just so many different mediums to try
and so many ways of looking at and interpreting objects,
landscapes, personalities
etc etc ad naseum
that it would be a crime!
a crime i tell you!
to not follow your art path
as far as you can go!
it's every artist's responsibility to do that!
don't get me started! :)
I feel the quality isn't up to my standards yet
but the audience is often more merciful than the creator
but ,the light is just over the horizon....
As for your complaint....
wah.
someday,when time allows
perhaps on my deathbed....
i will read all this from page one
and just smile at all the love and adventure !
but until then..
wah,my friend!

LOL!
Roland!
So glad that "the prayer" arrived safely with no feathers lost!
Spare the mirrors and simply affix it to the fridge with a magnet!
Thank you again! You've helped spread the orongo vibe southward!
:)

Robb
I wanna rap-battle rant with you next time we hang....

Burn us a path to freedom from the Old Ways.

Whaddafudge is that?
Sounds like some Omega man luddite thing to me!
and i checked out your website...
where's my Cadillac Eldorado
you don't wanna be on the bad end of a
Colwood Nuclear-tipped Glow-in-the-Dark BurnMeister 2000...
werd.
and yer waterfall is outtasight! red!red! :)

Anyways, did some backgrounds for the CHOP at Babalus
as well as a few backgrounds/pieces elaborating on a tapa/abstract style
developed when i was doing a lot of fabric prints at work and on the sly...

this first one vibrated with a warm beachy feel...
the waves lapping in
the volcano smoking
the semi transparent shields
i like how it leads my eyes
the beams of the sun hitting the water
and it was fun breaking up the land and volcano
and the windmill/propeller of the big palm
blowing a breeze to cool down the very hot day..
what a happy accident! :)

"Summer Shorebreak"
ink and colored pencil on paper

this one i sketched out in a sepia water-soluble pencil
AFTER the ink base had dried...
the shield on the left is nudging the middle fellow over
while the shield on the right is vigilant, watching him
ensuring his safety!
and the best part is that the middle guy
is actually a guardian as well
guarding that little disembodied head
thar below!
simple and sweet!
makes me smile!

"the Guardians"
ink and colored pencil on paper

Sometimes the fabric print styled ones
take on a life of their own
the elements seem to sing/or dance
or jump
might as well jump! :)
Anyways, the two bottomround sun-like elements
appear to be adding a loud vibrating outward
kind of feel
and those "tapa-bars" seem to be blocking off access
as well as invading the space of
the momma flowers and her little biddy babbies!:)
the one on the bottom right is cut-off
and obviously scared!
Ah! the beauty of the narrative that lies within a piece!

"the Commotion"
ink and colored pencil on paper

and my favorite of the session...
that's actually a sepia, not a black for the dark areas!
This colorway was fun..
the green and yellow background were exciting enough but...
i decided to try something that could throw the whole thing off!
the tip of the bleachpen was kinda glorpy that day
sometimes it just leaves a perfect bleach bubble on a line that
POPS and sprays over a part of the drawing...
Anyways-i flipped the pen over and used the scrubby side
and glorp! same thing-especially by the figure lower right...
after rinsing and doing the sepia brush and orange one
(it bled splendidly thru the bleached area
a different surface than the unbleached inked area..
Anyways,here it is!
decided to pay homage to Chagall and put an upside down fern up top!
and that's a sideways "hut/motif" mix...
The whole piece would fall apart if you took out just a few details
i feel like it's tenaciously floating over the paper surface
shouting to the villagers an alarm of some kind!

"Jungle Cry"
ink and colored pencil on paper

But wait!
there's more!
Also did this on a piece of wood that was slated for woodburning!
wood donations graciously accepted!
Anyway, did this morning piece in gouache
tried to get that same kind of "depth" of environment
in this one
Also wanted to cram a LOT of things into a little space and to make them work..
that hopefully explains my palm tree/plumeria overlap

the sun has a kind of Blast-off sequenced take-off
and the hut was fun
just to try to scrape it down to it's essentials
lots of hints of detail
but really not much..
huh?
"Morning" gouache on wood

next one is an acrylic on unprimed wood..
i layed the acrylic down all watered down and swoooosh!
parts of it started to soak in and spread!
AAAAAAAAh!
but after a little bit of figgerin out
it became friendly..
Last week i got home and smelled Corned beef!
and had to wait ,like 2-3 hours and just smelling it
and mmmmmmm! it drivin me nuts!
this is an expression of that!
"Thoughts of Dinner"acrylic on wood

Here's a detail!

and lastly..
another woodburned and ink tinted piece from the
Colwood Nuclear-tipped Glow-in-the-Dark BurnMeister 2000
onto a carving platter from my pal Squids!
Thanks Squids! :)
what's really cool about it is that it's full of hacks
and nicks and cuts
from countless slicings and dicings
of turkeys and beef and roast beast
for greedy little mouths
and foul smelling carnivore fingers
Ah!
Actually,it is filled with turkey and beef and roast beast MANA!
or not! :)
Anyways ,this piece called for two different tips
as you will see by the thick and thin lines in this one!
"the Warm Aloha" woodburn and ink on wood carving board

Here's a closeup of him waving hello or goodbye!:)

And remember
ALL THIS STUFF AND MORE can be YOURS at Damon's
on the 21st at the Tiki Magazine Release party!
Hope to see y'all there!
:)

All four of these latest are wonderful, but I have to say "The Guardians" does it for me.

Bold, balanced-but-not-symmetrical, traditional with a fresh accomplishment, little bit sly, and fun.

Everything I enjoy finding in a Ruzic work.

Go man, go.

SOK

Love the new abstracts Ken. There's a really great vibe going on in those red tiki abstracts, dig!

B

The Guardians should be a cover of Tiki Mag...

Johnny!
Thanks man for all your cheerleading...
it's weird ,after filling spaces with so much detail
I'm finding these simple pieces capture a different aspect
or essence...
can't wait til all these styles start to combine
into one Uber-style!
Glad you enjoyed it...
i think GROG wants it
but i'm thinking of a SELLING MORATORIUM
until Damons
and then it's first come first serve..
and there are LOTS of deals to be had!
Some out in the open
others hidden and requiring some sifting and hunting...
Sneaks!dig...
you know the dig...
see you've been blossoming some more! :)
BAbs-shucks man!
i love this guy!
such a brain!
and a great wife!
and doggie!
GROG-wah.

LT

Wow! This is more fun that the Sears Christmas Catalog! 'The Guardians' is beautiful; 'Summer Shorebreak' is really impressive. I had to study that one for a bit to take it all in.

I'm really digging that "Jungle Cry" for some reason. Awesome work/technique/style.

T

KINNY! Love your new work! My favorites are The Smile (reminds me of Mary Blair!)and Jungle Cry... I'd totally wear a tiki shirt if it had that pattern printed on it!

G
GROG posted on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 11:19 PM

GROG agree. "Jungle Cry" should be a a print pattern for a shirt.

Yes there are several of these that would make GREAT fabric patterns! I'd buy the shirt!
I was just thinking how LLT is our "Mary Blair" -- 1st because he's a sissy boy but mostly because of his great illustrations combined with what SHOULD BE his other career as a fabric pattern designer.

Once again outstanding patterns LLT.

Yours huffing varnish fumes,

The Guardians is my fav. Tough, tough decision because they're all great! Sheesh.

Lord Kenneth Ruzic, Esq. The Tiki Cubist strikes again!!

Bo

PS I don't have any jokes at this moment. I have to call a meeting with my writers. :)

sorry kenny, i had last minute class that was smack dab in the middle of the chop, so i couldnt make it out...no thanks keep the toe, you cant even give one of those away!

HI KIDS!
ONE MORE DAY TIL THE TIKI MAGAZINE RELEASE PARTAY!
Doi-yoy-yoy-yoy-yoy!
Just got finished packin everything up.including
2 TikiShark pieces that Brad asked me to show!
There's nothing like seeing a Bradley piece in person!
it's got that UUMPH!

LOL-
Hey man! You just reminded me of the season when i went to illinois and got a bunch of old
60s-70s Sears catalogs and actually designed a Summer line around the prints and styles we found in there!
Miss looking at all those GI JOe toys and dreaming....
sigh!
Glad you like the abstract,Sir!
Thanks for visiting and trying to decipher the Summer Shorebreak...
I'm thinkin some big canvases are screaming for this style!

Mango-Jungle Cry is really a compelling one...
it's half fabric print and half narrative....
a chimera,of sorts.....
like one of them things they grow in some pentagon lab miles beneath the earth....
Thanks for the Stoke!
gonna need that for tomorrow! :)

Tobunga!
Thank you,my friend!
jazzed you're gonna be at the Tiki Wonderland
sharing your beautiful work with the sheep...er, peeps!
I've only seen bits and pieces of Blair
peter Pan,and a few things
very playful and oodles of sweetness!
ATTENTION! I will trade art for Mary Blair books!
Sometime I'll show you some of the fabric prints i did for
Hawaiian Island Creations, Rusty Surfboards, etc during the 90's ...
there's little peeks of these abstracts in them, kinda foreshadowing the styles of today!
I'll see what i can do to get a new shirt made
cuz you is the snazziest tikishirt wearer EVER!
When you gonna glaze that Hut mug? it's a beaut!

you too GROG!
Mahalos Caveman!
Terrill just bought some BIGGER Arches pads so i will be doing bigger versions of these soon!
so you can at least tape the paper together and wear it!
See you soon!

Sneakers!
sissy?
you're lucky i have Damons this weekend
or i would recon over there and pull a RAMBO on YOUR artsy butt!
as for another career...I've got two already!
Somethins gotta give! :)
if you're huffing varnish fumes...KRYLON provides the longest buzz
but the headache afterwards is nothing to laugh about! :)

Bowana!
Ah! I feel so blessed to have soooo many talented friends !
Maybe you could apply to be one!
it's so inspiring!
Never a dull moment!
Esq!
Your miniature flags of miniature countries collection
has inspired me to stop and think of the little things! :)

Thomas...
whatever...you snooze-you lose...
Now someone else is gonna adopt the Remorseful Cannibal...
I still am shipping you the Toe....cuz he smells funny...

Well, after affixing pricetags and actually wrapping the art up carefully..
i had a squeeze of time and banged out another ink drawing
that is kind of a brother to the Guardians
but a diff narrative...
kind of like Picasso would do with themes..
elaborate! elaborate! expand! develop!
blahblahblah!
Here it is!
and this will also be at Damons for you to adopt!
"the Crowd"
same elements/2 shields/1 figure and three flowers
and made it a little moodier
and also did some weird lighting/shadows stuff...
not as strong as the below piece
but it was around 11:30 pm
and daddy was tired!

and here's "the Guardians"
so you can see em side by side!

Well, gotta get to woiks!
Hope to see y'all tomorrow!

Nice Stuff KEN!

Thanks Duddy!
ATTENTION PEEPS!
A large majority of the art on this thread will be at DAMONs tonight
for you to peruse and adopt TONIGHT!
And if you want "the Guardians" piece
you better get there early
cause GROG wants it
and i would rather see one of you get it!
teeheeheeeheee!

Kenny~
"the Crowd" is amazing! Beautiful, poppin out 3 d looking art!

I think when artists shut off their heads and just listen to that inside instinct, that beautiful happy things can't help but be born!Sometimes the subconcious is leagues ahead..new styles already examined and inventoried......
and then...when the mind is quiet...it gets doled out! A dollop at a time!
BLIP! BLOP!
Let's make More Mugs! I have 10 sketchbook pages awaiting creation!
Can't wait to see that PNG drum/mug glazed!
mmmmmmmmmm!

Ravers-Hope you get your computer fixed!
You must be suffering TC withdrawals!
you kids are too kind!
The abstracts are fun and surprising!
Watched a DVD yesterday "the Mystery of Picasso" where he paints/draws about 20-25 pieces..
Realized it's not awful to cover/rub out stuff and repaint,as long as the piece succeeds!
I recommend it to anyone interested in the process of a great artist!
French with subtitles....
NOMNOM guys on Mugs.....Maybe.....

LOL-Alright! Alright!
Just don't SIC the dog on me!
and thanks for saying "please"

Sketched out these for a project coming up....
that's all i'm gonna say for now til i get full confirmation..
Tryin to get the perfect shrunken head for this piece....

That's it! back to Woiks!

the last 2 above.

Aloha All!
Thanks so much for all the hugs and nice comments and jokes at Damons!
it was fun AND overwhelming seeing all y'all!
But not as overwhelming as Thor's velvets.......
:)

Brad!
Thank you ,my kind friend!
Been enjoying taking a flat linear drawing and diagonalizing
it and playing with light and shadow and creating different planes
yet still trying to keep it readable...talk about gettin transported!
Stuart Davis likened abstract painting to jazz and loooooved Bach organ fugues as well-both of them playing with notes and riffs and timing...
balancing it..kinda an aural type of painting!
And my pleasure about the Damons...
Everyone on the planet needs to see your art!
(except the dictators, cuz they would kidnap you
and make you their court painter!)

Ben!Pomona-Glass House-last night
opted to stay in the studio out of the rain
heard they're playing the Troubadour this weekend...
Spermy's going...you busy?

Sneaks!
thanks!
i have a little secret pet-project involving fabric prints so stay tuned!
the show a Damons was swell and i was stoked how many people left the booth with an adopted piece! I hope it brings them all joy and giggles!

Ben-they're waiting for you at my house...
i told em they were going to Frankies and they were excited!
Thanks man!

After Damons I spent a lot of time in the studio unpacking and such
when suddenly the fever hit!
Seeing as i had some new pads of watercolor paper
i did what comes natural!
Finished 8 pieces (3 are awaiting scans-cuz they're BIG!
and about 20 sketchbook pages of abstract studies and solutions..
i had a few days-was in hermit mode
why not play and relax and recover from Damons people overload! :)

here's what i come up wit...

"Five Tikis"

"the Traveller's Tale"

i like how the lower right corner evokes a ship with passengers
just slightly......

"the Rowers" a standard theme these days...
always fun to draw and elaborate upon

"the Grouch"

testing the waters on flattening multiple views/overlapping/etc.
diggin the way the hands landed on the page! :)

and lastly..
"the Sun at Rest"
a kind of Paul Klee inspired gent!

That's all!
back to Work!

I DIG the abstracts.

re; Sat....

I'll be back in vegas werkin'.

Have fun with Spermy!

Thanks Ben!
and thanks for pickin up those 2 shrunken heads!

He's gonna burn the edges-mount em on wood and clearcoat em!
They look cool at Frankies near the Shrunken Head painting! :)

Did a few BIGGER drawings (fergot the size...some European measurment)
on the Arches with ink and tissue paper staining and some water-soluble pencil shading...
HERE'S THE CLEANER SCANS
i took these just so you can see
the GROUND being BROKEn with these...
It seems like the Code is slowly being cracked on this style
And what a fun journey it has become!

Here's a fun little simple one
"the Undergrowth"
When i was a kiddle, one of the best things to do was to run off into the wilderness areas and just explore.I discovered that, under all the bushes and grasses.that there were nests and bugs and nifty little ferns and such!
I guess this piece is a salute to that...

Here's a drawing where a petroglyph has been stylized into a character or characters....
Let me introduce.... "the Flower Eaters"

Here's some studies for Tiki Moderne Abstract tikis
that i decided to give a fabric print composition to....
"Six"

Also attempted to simplify/revisit the Cannibal King
but in a cuter/abstracty style!

detail

found a new way of sbstracting skulls
paring them down to essentials...

Also, been working on the whole FEAST theme..
Here's 3 that developed one after the other...
Each one a little bit different
in characters/vegetation/and style a little too!

"Feast Day"

I like the birdman in the back, shouting his friends onward!

the next one has four of my little Moai friends jaunting along...
This one makes me smile sooooo big!
the colors just pop off the paper!
"the Dancing Platter"

some details....

and this last one,a little deeper in the jungle
and a little more mid-day...
"the Meal"

I like how this one has a Hawaiian,a Maori, and an Rapa Nuin (is that how you say it? Rapa "New-ee-en"?

So many stories pop up when i look at their attitudes and body language..
I'm glad that this style has gone so well...
I had been searching for a style
for my half-written "little lost tiki" kid's book
and i think this may be the look for it! :)
Funny how it all just clicks into place!
Just got a bunch of canvases,a few biggies and i think i may tackle
one of these-probably the Dancing Platter one!

and just so you don't think i dropped the paintings entirely...
started this one..some abstract masks...

That's it for now kind family......
see y'all at the Tonga hut next Saturday!
:)

Again, amazing new pieces! You're knocking this stuff out so fast you're gonna have to make a lay-a-way box with my name on it and just start tossing finished pieces into it. :D (I can make down-payments in Blue-Chip stamps, tiki mugs, Happy Meal toys, balls of twine, buttons, marbles, samolians and occasionally, dollars. I could also try to set you up with one of these.)

BTW - totally unrelated.

Ooooooh, diggin' that piece on the left!

Boy, you're right about the mats. It's that hy falootin, reel arteest, metric sized paper that he uses. :P I couldn't do it right myself so I took mine to a framer and had them float the art between the mat and glass. I should learn how to do it myself; I'd rather spend the money on the art than the framing.

BABALU! Thanks man! It's been a fun voyage all throughout these past 20 years of creating....I love the excitement of discovering! I guess the love shines on through with these drawings! Have fun this week!

Thanks y'all!

LOL-OOOOh! liking that velvet kit! it looks sooo professional!
and thanks for the scoop on the paint-by-numbers museum! They had a show last year (dunno where) where artists were each given a paint by number and got to do their thing....missed out on that one! Thanks so much for liking the work and sharing your home with a few of my babies! If you want anymore just holler! They multiply like rabbits!
As for the matting/mounting question...
i usually just buy some matting/papyrus/bamboo thatching-spray mount it to a pre-cut size of illustration board-or even foamcore(this is for the papyrus/thatching-the regular matting is thick enough-cut it to size-get that puffy 2-sided acid free tape-apply it to the back of the drawing-balance it OVER the mat before applying-then slowly lower it onto the mat-press down-do one corner first and work outward while you press it down-so you won't get creases or buckles... TADA! now put your (cleaned both sides) glass in and the mounted drawing after that-and secure the drawing/mat/glass from the back! DONE!
hi-falootin?
who uses that word anymore?

teaKs!-Good to have you visit!
Stained Glass?
if it weren't for the lead-I'd be on it so bad! Chagall's stained glass of the Twelve Tribes amazes me at least once a week....stunning! If only....

Bowana!
Thanks pal!
Those look so great on the wall!
like little museum pieces!
like "official""real" art or somethin!
How nice of you to invite Sister Wendy over!
She's such a sweetie-pie!
Are you kids dating?
Maybe we can send the Sister to Europe to do something about that metric system and weird drawing paper sizes! I have a miniature flag for you!!!

Thanks for the visits!
I'll post better pics of these this week, i promise!

LOL-OOOOh! liking that velvet kit! it looks sooo professional!
and thanks for the scoop on the paint-by-numbers museum!

Dood - Thanks for the scoop on the mounting!

Hi-Falootin - I'm bringing Hillbilly back. I'll be the Bosko of this new movement; I'm gunna start making Jed Clampett mugs and Cement Pond scorpion bowls. And each will have a signature drink like "Black Gold" and "Texas Tea". Maybe I can get Squid to sculpt me up a "Granny's Shrunkin Head" bowl/mug/thing and fill it with a "Critter Cocktail". And Jeff Berry can write a book - we'll call it "Hooch Hunt". And then... well, maybe not.

BTW - PM'd ya.

Dude, Do you still have the Grouch and the Sun at Rest avalible?

C

don't be sad, you are going to make a lot of nice people super happy! (but i think your art should sell not only for money, for manners too, like if you want a LLT you have to be nice, they should come with a test to see if people deserve them :)! Big hug my friend i know you get what i mean, that's why a like you and your art so much, they are not only pretty :)! )
