BEFORE I GET TO POSTING THE ACTUAL CANVAS IN PROGRESS...
I'd like to share a few fun photos of the cruise to Ensenada...

Monumental Street Art!

great street signage!
here's my wife with a background example...

and look!
a Tilt-a-Whirl! in mexico!
a Mexican tilt-a-whirl!
Viva la Funtime!
Joy!

Damn fence!
Que Lastima!

i want one!

Tanks for the memories!

thus concludes the tourist photoslide show....
thank you for your patience....

well...the Squid invasion canvas has started..
but first, some close-ups of the study for it
a study in contrasts,at times ...
as you compare it to the canvas....
olcano and stars falling out of the sky Revelation stylee!

i had to simplify the figures
lest they steal attention from the SQUIDS!
they are merely pawns and victims in this Grand Scheme of a painting!

one slithering ashore
while another attempts to scale a hill...

carnage....silent wet tentacled carnage...

check out the fellow running...
he dropped his spear!

i used a lip with a tapa-ish motif to separate the surface from below it..
i'll be using it to rim the clouds on the upper part on the canvas...

the KRAKEN! actually a giant Humboldt "Red Devil" Squid!

Okay! now that you're familiar with the initial inspirational elements
let us move forward....

to the CANVAS!!!!!

First off, this was to be based on those polynesian Storyboards that are carved from wood...A lot of them are very simple and basic
but i found a few that had some pretty good detail..
not LLT SuperHappyFunTime detail'''
but enough to satisfy my horror vacuii inclinations...

So first thing is i went to the Art Supply warehouse
and got some supplies
mainly a 24 x 36 canvas!
we had wanted an 18x36-but it don't exist in standard frame land... :(
Anyways, first thing was to grab some burnt umber/raw umber/sepia/naples yellow/raw umber/etc and did some wide brushstrokes
down the canvas vertically..
After that i sketched the scene-adjusting for size
as compared with the sketch...

(ARTISTS NOTE:None of these have been adjusted for color
just think "wood color" okay? thank you)

after pencilling in a part of it,i began to brush in with Raw umber
the outlines ,and to add washes of color,to build up the shadows..
the shadows are the most important in this piece
because i want to keep that low relief illusion going...
Love this style,it retains a bit of that Indian miniature
meets Giotto kind of perspective...like a roman frieze..

added an extra squid here..

big eye!
sing it like that Cheap trick song!

Here's a good close-up to show the washes i build up..

SECOND DAY!
much progress-more fleshing out of the sculptural elements..

trying to get the shafts of light to look carved
yet still remain a painting..

Squizzes!

added suckers
to give it more movement
and slitheriness!

big eye under the tapa lip...

the ceremony on the boat....
slowly coming to life!

worked out the figural simplification a lil bit better!

Thanks for visiting!
have a great day!
:)

Happy Birthday Kinny!!!

I'm lovin' the agro Squizzes! I can't wait to see this sucker finished so I can daydream about it.

Love the below and above layout!

That base golden color is pretty awesome - what is that??

That base golden color is pretty awesome - what is that??

In person you can really see Ken's beautiful use of color wash to create the wood look. Detail is delightful and as expected from LLT! Can't wait to see it finished. Thanks for the fun time at THE RUZIC studio, Kinny! Lil Blue says you should take a shower and go to bed! We never did get around to talking about framing.

Aww, it seems you had a great little trip! I am glad Terril didn't had to slice your head off herself, because you didn't paint for 4 days strait, i was worried about the side effects that could have :)
But i see you came back very inspired instead, great start for the commission painting!

WoW-Eeeee Ka-Zoweeee!!!

Looks like Kinney's "Zip" is still "Fizzin'!"

Almost forgetting for the moment all thoughts of Moby Dick, we now gazed at the most wondrous phenomenon which the secret seas have hitherto revealed to mankind. A vast pulpy mass, furlongs in length and breadth, of a glancing cream-color, lay floating on the water, innumerable long arms radiating from its centre, and curling and twisting like a nest of anacondas, as if blindly to catch at any hapless object within reach. No perceptible face or front did it have; no conceivable token of either sensation or instinct; but undulated there on the billows, an unearthly, formless, chance-like apparition of life.

As with a low sucking sound it slowly disappeared again, Starbuck still gazing at the agitated waters where it had sunk, with a wild voice exclaimed- "Almost rather had I seen Moby Dick and fought him, than to have seen thee, thou white ghost!"

"What was it, Sir?" said Flask.

"The great live squid, which, they say, few whale-ships ever beheld, and returned to their ports to tell of it."

Moby Dick, chapter 59, Herman Melville

B

Wow, can't wait to see how the Squid War turns out! Looks like the humans are winning, but those squids are looking like they might have an ace up their collective sleeves!

Did you check out La Bufadora whilst in Ensendada?

It's a big hole in the rocks and when the tide comes in the water blows out like a geyser.
¡Es espectacular!

Did you pick up a miniature Mexican flag for yourself?? :)

Bowie

Very cool stuff, Ken! It's amazing how you compose these and put all of your elements together in a layout so that they seem to harmonize - like they started out together all along. Great to see that the Mexicans are enjoying the sensations of the Tilt-A-Whirl too!

Aloha Children!
from the Land of the Kraken!!!!
:o
More progress made..
but first....
some visitin time!

TikiJoe's Pup!
Gracias Andy!
Tu' El Hombre!
:)

Jonesy!

Kiki-Thanks so much for enjoying "Night of the Falling Stars"
Great seeing you and Squid and Toe and Carolyn that evening!
and thanks for that Mythology book from my past! love those etchings!they bring me back to 4th grade!
Omigosh! Talk about gift Night!
Caroline brought me the Monkey Motherload!
And Squid brought me some BITCHIN frames and this...

a battery operated bunny (sans fur) to paint up like a robot.....or something fantastical!
I am so blessed to have such cool Ohana!!!
Anyways....
Gimme a call and i can give you some solid framing advise for your Sea monster!

Swampfire-Douglas! Thank you! As a kid, I used to dig on the dioramas at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago! Plus, those dern Golden Books and the How and Why Wonder Books...
The Above/Below scenes must have seeped in! I'd love to see a Doug Horne Kraken piece!!!!

GROG-Same to you!

Mango!-MAhalos my friend!
I'm hoping to make them feel a little less aggro, despite their actions..
I'm trying to get them to appear more controlled by their destiny..
a destiny somehow commanded by the stars falling from the sky...
The same stars that have activated the nearby volcano...
I hope, when it's finished, that it grants you years of daydreams....
:)

MooneyTiki-GRACIAS! Thanks for the enthusiasm!
I'll keep em coming,don't worry!
i know of nothing else...

Brad!
Thank pal!
Now get off line and get that octo-girl finished for your show!

Robb-the base color is successive washes of Naples yellow, burnt sienna, and a couple of other warm tones.
i just streaked them down the canvas...let it dry....and added another layer...

Clarita-Actually,Terrill was encouraging me to read and draw but i couldn't for some reason...
Guess i felt out of sorts or maybe i was storing and accumulating visual data for later...
Or maybe it was burnout from Oasis, not sure, but upon return to the studio....CRACKO!
Back in the Saddle!Picnic! :)

TikiLee!
mmmmmmmmm! ZIPFIZZ!

Brad!
Less reciting Moby Dick-more painting!
it's like you're addicted to TC or something...

Bowana-humans winning? hmmmmmmmmmm....
We'll see...
No Bufadadora..it cost some $60 to get a ride down there to stay for half N HOUR! Photograph it
and then head back...
Working with a BLOWHARD like BigToe 3 days a week is enough!
Couldn't find any miniature flags...
you may have the only one on EARTH!

Hey Sam!
Thanks buddy!
the study i posted was after about 5 false starts..
i would grab the strongest details from the failures
and build upon them... Looks like it's paying off!
Thanks so much for "getting" it so far!
Viva La Tilt-A-Whirl!
:)

Well, here's the progress on "Night of the Falling Stars"
Fleshing out more detail/Bringing areas out/Pushing areas back....
Burnt Umber and Naples Yellow are my friends! :)

Getting the stars star-ted...
Note the tapa-ish line for the cloud/volcano smoke...
this way, the ocean floor is separated from the surface
which is now separated from the sky...

Here's the Land Encroaching Beast slowly receiving some form...

Here's underwater big Squid,a little more fleshed out..

more ocean floor-trying to make the shafts of light more sculptural...

I'm really pleased with the way this area is developing...

A lil more work on the foreground sinking boat and the strange chief and his odd ceremony in the background...

The volcano and the stylized clouds and vegetation slowly
taking shape and getting some well-deserved depth...

and Lastly...
I'd like to say Farewell to two old friends....
"Dance of the Cannibal King"
36 x 36"
gouache on canvas

and "Arrival of the Pineapple King"
48 x 72" (4 x 6 feet!)

I sold them BOTH at the Freaky Boutiki Gallery this weekend!
Thanks HAnk!
Support your Tiki Art Establishments!

So today, i took one last shot before delivery to the nice peoples in a few days...

SNIFF!gonna miss you Big Fellar!

Thanks everybody for stopping by!

I love the Field Museum! Making those weird waxy dinosaurs in the machines was the best. Went back about 5 years ago and they moved the dinosaur machine to the basement near "Bushman" and got my fix of that awesome hot wax smell. I am a Huffer to the core!

Jen

Totally ,Jen!
Brookfield Zoo had 'em too!
I remember the Alligator wax casting
from the Reptile house!
mmmmmmm!
Lost Wax smell!
:)

Departure of the Pineapple King. . .
It'll be missed on your wall, but congrats on the sale! You're rocking San D. Kinny!

THANKS KIKI !
I'm gonna miss it too....
:(
But, hey! I've looked at it long enough...

Well, had to do some hanging/preparatory work
on pieces headed down to Sandy A-Go
and, in the lulltime
started a drawing for some friends of mine....
This one is an elaboration of an old piece
"the night parade"

but it was calling for some newer characters
and a different daytimey mood...
Here it is....
(about 1" got cut off on the left side of this..
i'll get a better shot later...)

"Tiki Joe's Jungle"
ink and marker and water-soluble pencil on Watercolor paper

This guy will be heading up North in the next month or so
to assist Joey and Sammy with their Dreamtime journeys!
:)

Enjoy!

Love the night parade.

Yep, I got all of the Brookfield zoo ones too. I always got burned cause I couldn't wait til they cooled to hold them up and sniff them!

I am in love with the hairless bunny. Can't wait to see what you do with him. I might need him!

Jen

B

Ohhhh, this is soooo classic!! Your going to have a ton of fun with this little guy!

I actually like the bunny the way he is now...RAW!

I agree completely :)

Maybe, build to it, not on it... Found objects have multiple meanings.

Ken, if I'm right (and I always am) "Arrival of the Pineapple King" was the first painting you posted here on this thread. Always great stuff Ken - Squid Wars is turning out awesome.

SOOOOOO-WEET! How very VERY kind of you. It is such a fun piece- Joey is gonna flip out and thrown down some James Brown moves after seeing this one. THANK YOU PALLY! We're gonna have a BLAST up here!

Sorry about your loss of "The Arrival of the Pineapple King." That was always one of my absolute favorites. Hope the new owners feed it, bathe it and give it the love it deserves.

ALOHA, MAN & Mahalo once again~!~!

Sure to be the stuff of many imaginative playtimes! Lucky kiddos!

Come by my thread later cause i wanna ax yu som kesteeuns.

Great Work!

C

Clarita-Actually,Terrill was encouraging me to read and draw but i couldn't for some reason...

That's what I've meant to say. It was a joke about you having tons of energy, because if when you are painting a lot you still have a lot of energy to go around TC and stuff (at list compared to myself you are a tornado), you not painting for 4 days could be though to handle, that's what I imagine and was giggling about :)

ALOHA FRIENDS AND PSEUDO-FAMILY!
What a week since we've last chatted!
Got to go to a CHOP at HodadHanks
and made some progress with some pieces
and had some great chuckles all week!
Well, there's some fun stuff to share
so I'll be quick!

Jen, just been eyeballin that funnybunny
waiting til he speaks to my muse...
Can't keep him the way he is..
He says his skin feels like there's permanent lollipops and burrs in his fur
You can hear him crying late at night at the studio....
it's really sad...
BUT!!!!!!
I do have a can of GOOF-OFF
so he'll get a good cleaning up
and readymifying him for some bizarre end!

By the way, can i get some pix of those pendants?
you know the ones!
or at least a Brookfield Zoo wax cast? :)

Babs!
So great to see you at the Chop!
I knew you'd get a kick out of this fellow!
The Bunny fever is spreading!
I believe Joseph Beuys was into rabbits as well!
hm!

MadDog!
Great to see you on Sunday as well...
Beef Jerky Ice CREAM?
well, we all have our quirks..
You just seem to have more than most....
That's the fuel the MadDawg runs on,eh?!
Arrival of the Pineapple King
WAS the very first piece i posted...
Had painted other pieces before that in the same theme
but that was the first..
Glad it's going to a proper home
instead of my rathole studio...
:)
Snif!
More Squid Warz a little further down....

TJP!
AHHHHHHHHN-DEE!

back to workin up some more Clay Wonderness!
You are on a ROLL!
oh yeah! quit slackin on that PNG piece.......you..you,,,,slacker!

Clarita-
Actually, most of that energy was spent walking around the ship
and up and down stairs ..
i DID Bust Out of that ArtFunk since Oasis
right after the cruise..
Maybe the brain needs a break
just to absorb
and unconsciously sort out
backlogged information....
Anyways, Thank you dear, for always bringing a smile to this
and all the other threads you visit!

and MAHALOS to all of you who pop on by and see the latest offerings!
I can feel your eyes burning a hole in me brain!
Right ON the pineal gland!
sssssssssssssssss!

First Offering..
a take on the MaiKai Cannibals...
Inspired by TikiKate's Awesome Cannibal thread in "Collecting"
Go Kate! Lovely to see YOU on Sunday as well!

"Moai Kai"
Tissue Paper stain, ink and pencil on Cold Press watercolor paper (the rough textured kind)

Hunter

Catcher

Ingestor

This next piece also channels a moody memory from the Mai Kai in Florida
More of a feeling, than literal depiction..
a mood piece!
it started as a study of two angles of a beautiful Kava bowl
and grew into a piece torn between MANY worlds
a stained glass abstract world
a semi-cartoony realism place
and a dreamy hazy memory
of a magical place..

"After hours"
Tissue Paper stain, ink and pencil on Cold Press watercolor paper (the rough stuff!)
Please excuse the glare on parts of the black
it was photogged it in an obnoxious light

Here's the DEETs!

The "tapa line" cuts thru the whole piece
and also succeeds in establishing two worlds/points-of-view to the bowls
stoked! :)

Wonder what's sloshing in that craaaaaazy bowl?

love this guy's expression!
like he's getting the short end of the stick
when it comes to hauling this bigazz bowl around!

And....
more progress on
"Night of the Falling Stars"

almost there,kiddles!
YEEEe-e!
:)

Just layering washes in already established areas
while slowly building up and adding new elements..
over and over again.....

This fellow feels an urge to slink up the island hill!

A stoic and reverent Chief
amongst all the other frantic fools!
Is it a Giant menace or a Sea God returned?

Here's an Ultra Close-up
Stars falling from the Sky!

You can see the water soluble pencil lightly sketched and awaiting development...

Welpers...that's it!
Time to relax and go rest the ol' eyes from computer fuzz mind control light!
Have a good night Ohana
and Thanks fer visitin!
:)

HOLY CRAP KINNY!!

This piece is awesome!

I'm sorry but that was my initial reaction...

Hunter, Captor, Ingestor makes me giggle!

T

Gecko is really the only other guy to tackle that Hawaiian guy before. Very sweet in that style.

I don't know what to say, Mr. Ruzic.

It's been said before regarding your imaginative style and grace with da paper and color and ink executed by your hand.

Allow me to say this: Thank You

Thanks for the HOLY CRAP,Heath!
This looks like a theme/style i may wrassle with more!

SkinnyDog-glad they make you giggle,Jen!
you've got a great giggle! :)

teaKs-there must be some OTHER artists who've tackled this theme ...
A few years back
i had played around with "travelling throne " concepts
and this bowl kinda fit into that category..
Why get up and grab that kava bowl
when it can simply saunter over on it's own?
Glad you like it..mahalos!
:)

TikiG-no,sir...thank YOU!
shucks! Now i's blushing!

This is looking amazing, attack of the giant squids. A theme close to my heart. Thanks [as always] for all the great 'how it's made' photos.

Night of the Falling Stars

Over the top O'Kinster-baby! Edgy... woodgrain...waaay beyond the norm...unique approach of storytelling...tribal vibe....unlike anything I've seen from you!

:tiki: EXCELLENT! :tiki: (five-falling stars) ***** :D

Hey Kinny!Love that tapa waterline and undersea light rays! Verrrrry coool you crafty little fella.

Remmber last week we were chopping @ the lagoon and that giant devil squid attacked us and ate my foot? Jeepers! Thank god Bill brought his chainsaw or we'd all be gonners. I won't turn my back on that lagoon again no matter how cool Toe's sketchbook is.

One liner you: [

b]I can't get enough of this minimalism![/b]

Zing! Is this thing on?

R

Ken, you have surpassed the old masters and have drifted into a new realm so far away distance no longer has meaning. You are now in a closed universe in the land beyond beyond. There is no way to return, but I imagine you are at peace with this isolation/trail blazing.

C

'After hours' it's so inspiring, there's something about it I really love, the action, the drama, the colors, the composition. i don't know, but I think it's great!
and 'Night of the Falling Stars' too, i like very much what it's going on on both of them, the way you are thinking.

Well.... Got a bunch o stuff to share on this lovely Monday mornin....
So i'll be brief....

tikiracer!
Thanks mate!
Something about giant Squids.....
and Octopi...
and Puffer Fish....
that stokes the imagination!
Glad you get something out of these step-by-steps...
i wish i could have you all over again for a massive ARTJAM!
it's been too long....

TravelingJonesy-
Mahalos for the unabashed enthusiasm! :)
Glad you enjoy it!
Always trying to push the edges out a little...
FINALLY got this puppy finished (sans "fine-tuning)
so scroll below and cheggitout,my friend!

hankee!
i remember!
Too bad we forgot to click some photos of the Kraken..
Nobody will ever believe it!
and beware of the Curse of the Unlucky BigToe Sketchbook!
it's claimed more lives than most felons!!!!

Robb-Blah! Blah! Blah! back to you!
Now pipe down with the embarrassing platitudes
and whip out some more ebony velvety goodness!

Clarita-Thanks my dear!
I guess that one was a hit....cause it's now readying itself
to live in a mystery patron's home! yay!
We think alike,Clarita...
i think many artists do
it's just that their hands
makes the results look different!
:)

Onto the ShEW.folks!
First off....
"Night of the Falling Stars" is pretty much finished
(asides from some fine-tuning here and there...)
with the sides painted and it awaiting some wire hanging stuff on the back...
here it is in all it's 24x36" glory.....

Here's some final close-ups,where you can see where i added some slight tinting in the suckers and a few other areas,as well as deepened some shadows and brought out some highlights
to help the "carved" illusion read better!

the floor of the sea...

tentacles piercing the surface
and a desperate rower calling for help!

this fellow chasing a poor Islander up the hill....

here's some of the background village and hills...

the stars falling out of the Night sky....
Are they heralds of the Squid's arrival
or merely onlookers?

What Polynesian inspired painting DOESn't have a volcano!?!?!?

The strange ceremony between chief and cephalopod...
it appears the chief has taken his servant's spear
and is conversing with the beast....
hmmmm

Tips Ahoy!
and a tentacled victim struggling to get free...

Sea bottom..

Think I'll keep this around the studio for a few days
and enjoy it
before sending it off to it's new home....
:)

Next offering is actually gonna be for the TIKOT-the Tiki themed Tarot show
at hodadhank's Freaky Boutiki gallery next month...
he asked me to do a Death card (seeing as it's the most iconic)
and i was gonna do a collage, but got inspired by this
olde-timey Frenchy tarot card..

where it pictures him as the REAPER!
harvesting heads from across class lines...

Well, here's my offering for the invitation....

PNG and MARQUESAN skullheads...

a Maori skullish head....

and a skeletal Moai!
i likee! :)

and a feathered cloak and helmet for the Hawaiian chief skeleton....

Now all i gotta do is pick a font and set up the invite!
YAY!

I'm gonna sepia-tint this before framing,so stay tuned!
:)

and for the last entry...
in above mentioned TikiTarot show
the Last Judgement card was picked for yours truly!

How appropriate is that?
Well, a few years back, decided to tackle a 5x5 foot Last Judgement piece
because it's a genre that not enough great artists have tackled....

Well, this Judgement was more of a nod to the Rider-Waite tarot cards and other
versions of this card....

So, this time,it was a MAORI approach to this time-honored "Day of Reckoning"

Instead of being raised from their graves
instead they are rising from small pools of water
like resurrected Venuses..

here is the middle figure..
inspired by an object found in a book about 1690-1790 polynesian artifacts....

this fellow on the right is still a little wobbly..

and here's the Angel meant to replace Michael in the original card.....

I love the arrangement of his arms as they hold the trumpet....

Well, that's it for now,friends!
have a Great Day!

T

Aaaarrrghhh I can't run, marshmallow ground, I have no reflection anymore.

Damn Kinny!

Stomp me back into the ground..you MONSTER!

*when are you going to finish The Little Lost Tiki childrens' book?!!? My GOD! DO IT!!

WOWEEE!!!! Those tarot cards are fantastic, Kenny. A skeleton Moai ~ niiiice....
You're in a very inspired place lately, don't stop!

-Andy

Those tarot cards are rockin'! Great visuals, and perfect transformation into Poly Pop versions.
