I actually bought some orange Halloween lights while I was out today!i also got some brown light shades on offer and stuck them together inside the basket with a glue gun! I kept it simple and wrapped a bit of rope round the ends and the middle then blow torched the rope.

As you can see the light shone through quite a lot before the shades.
I used the bracket to secure the bulb and point it towards the open end away from where you would look at the basket.
Even gives a bit of a spotlight effect!

Just picked up a pair of white glass globes for a song. Thinking of giving them the tea-stained basketball-net treatment, and wiring up some strong colored bulbs. In the dark, the opacity doesn't seem to be that off-putting. Also thinking of trying to snap off the "rim" and just leaving the globe itself - but that seems like it might lead to disaster.

perfect time of year for the question.
I have a fish trap light much like that.
What we got for it was those orange globe Christmas c7 type string of lights, well they are Halloween lights.
But they are not as off putting when you can see them a bit.
I just put the whole string in there draped around a bit.

I really like that idea. Will have to see what lights show up in the stores around here.

2-year update: I've sourced several more lamp globes over the months, including a batch of six 10 inch clear globes that I ended up giving the frosted colored glass treatment to (Krylon Sea Glass spray). After I had the globes finished, I nabbed some cheap basketball nets and simmered them in a bath of brown Rit dye. Wired up a C7 socket, gathered the net on a couple of split rings, and there you have it!

I had so many of these made that I actually sold several to my neighbors (spark that Tiki flame!), and at some local craft fairs. With the right bulb, they glow beautifully.

Weekend budget tiki project!

I've had this funky lampshade bouncing around for a good year now, nabbed at a charity sale for a buck or less if I recall. Last week, I finally found some material suitable for re-covering it - in the form of a women's blouse also had for a buck at the same charity sale.

With the back panel cut free from the shirt, I laid out where to cut for maximum utility of the pattern.

After some janky stitching (and honestly, what in tiki isn't janky in some small way) the shade is complete. Total cost: $2. I was told by a local lamp specialist it would take a month or more and upwards of $300 to have it redone professionally. BAH!

Looks good for $2. You should wrap some rope around the narrow part to give it more detail and hide the seam.

Thanks guys! I'm stoked with how well the shade turned out. Never done anything like that before. Guess those home ec skills finally paid off!
