Started the third 10 foot tiki yesterday, after absorbing some photos of the tikis at the City of Refuge for inspiration. Here's where I left it today.

Thanks pj and Kino!
I burned it today, and think I'm calling it done.

Very nice Bill, it's all done now except for the delivery and the PAYMENT!!!

4

Haha, exactly!!

B

if you were not selling them as fast as you were making them, you could have a City of refuge of your own!
EPIC!

Bowie

B

WOW, One of Bill's Best for sure, Really Incredible piece 4Wheel!

4

Well I thought they were done, but the client wasn't thrilled, and wanted a little more "wow", so I did some more chiselin'.
He saw these pics and was very pleased.

Wasn't thrilled?

Insanity!!!!!!!!!

S

I loved them as they were but I have to say that, that little bit of extra "wow" really did make them even more impressive.

W

Well done.
They really pop now.
Fan palm ?

WoW!

Tree-mendous Job, Bill!

4

Thanks swizzle, plugger and Lee.
Plugger, yup, they are fan palm.
I delivered them yesterday, and he has several more pieces of palm he wants carved. :D

Do It To It Bill!

Just cranking out the goodies!

Congrats on all the commissions, and nice chops on some mega tikis!

So, are you installing them ?
How you going to stand them up. Whats the game plan.
Are they dry & light or wet & heavy ?
Looks like you lean them against the tree in the pics you show. You stand them up by your self ?
We don't get fan or any palm that girthy here.
Can we get an install pic ?

It's up to the client to install them. I gave him some suggestions on how I would do it.

They are all pretty dry and light enough that I could stand them up by myself. Picture a solo version of the Iwo Jima flag-raising. :D
The Lono is the lightest and probably weighs about 30lbs max!

No install pics yet. The client needs to decide where in the yard he wants to place them. I definately will get pics when that happens, but it might be awhile.

You're killing me. Those are awesome!!! Am I mistaken or did you say 30 lbs??? I just used a come-along to stand up a 5 foot, 16 inch diameter cedar elm (hardwood). It's closer to 300 than 30.

4

Haha, yeah I did say 30 lbs. That tiki on the left, I can stand in front of and with my palms on the knees, press it straight up with very little effort. I think I'm on the high side with the 30 lb estimate.
This is wood that has been cut done for a few years, and it's fully dry. When palm is freshly cut down, it's soaked with water and and a bitch to move.

B

WOW, and Then there were Two, Awesome tikis. Seems your pieces are getting better and better Still, If that can be possible.??

Bill, those are some sweet tikis! You might want to lie them down before they detonate the Bomb House!!!!!

4

The bomb house is no more, Mike. The threat is neutralized! Tikis are safe!

The local outrigger club wanted some tiki skulls for awards, so I busted some out this week.

Alas, poor Yorick!

Fabulous as always Bill!!!

Absolutely wonderful pieces here Bill, love 'em.
You must have a big farm of drying logs somewhere.

4

Thanks, Kino! The client provided the wood for these three 10 foot tikis, which made it easy for me. He still has 4 or 5 more, same size, that he wants carved!

K

nice job 4w the extra effort made your 10ft tikis pop even more.

Love these guys Bill, great geometric cuts! Have a merry Christmas :)

4

Thanks Mike! And thanks for the scary Christmas card. Looked like you were swimming in the Salton Sea!

Here's what I did this week. Carved two tikis onto one log.

Then cut the log in half, to get this.

One finished

Other one finished

Today I started another skull, but it's bigger, maybe twice lifesize.
Pics next year.

Here's the newest skull. My first carving of 2011! :D

To show how much bigger than the others it is:

For scale, the small one is about the size of a human head.
