Then Mark Your Calendars!
Saturday March 15th

SurfBEAT is Coming!

don't miss this EPIC group art show that will feature original artwork
from over 70 prominent SURF, HOTROD, TIKI and other "outsider"
artists.

Some of the amazing group of surf, outsider and tiki artists who have
committed so far:

The Pizz, Rick Reitveld, Jeral Tidwell, Drew Brophy, John Bell, Candy,
Miles Thompson, Damian, BigToe, Mr.G, Doug Dorr, Grimb, Steve
Caballero, Ken Ruzic, Dave Lozeau, Bamboo Ben, Fudemae, Max Grundy,
Aaron Kraten, Fudemae, Squindo, James Mcleod, Keith Ciarmello, The
mysterious 13:11, Dirk Hays, Buddy June, Crazy Al, Scott Aicher,
Chongolio, Doug Horne, Atomic Kitty, Justin Barry, Chainsaw Chuck
Majewski, Von Poot, Dale Sizer, Nik Scarlett, Dark Vomit, Paul Torres,
Joe Vitale, Bob Penuelas, Augie pagan, Mike Sosnowski, Tiki ray, TV-1,
Ryzart, E.T.7, Link David, Brian Viveros and many more talented
artists from all over the globe!

The collision of artwork featuring surfing and hotrod cultural
influences may seem like a recipe for disaster. But in the case of
SurfBEAT, the Light Gallery in Costa Mesa is putting together a tasty
occular feast sure to please the most discriminating devotees of
"outsider art".

Surfing and hotrod cultures, along with fascination with the decadent
psuedo-polynesian tiki culture, all blossomed in the 50s, when hipster
baby boomers explored their sense of individuality and rebellion. They
offer in common today, as they did then, a haven for outsiders, folks
disenchanted with the promise of main-stream media and the American
Dream.

In the art world, the academic and traditional gallery communities
have been slow to warm to the allure of the art produced by these
outsiders. Artwork inspired by surfing, hotrods and tikis, in all its
forms, revels in It's representational depiction of familiar cultural
icons of the "wrong side of the tracks". This aesthetic has been
shunned by the leaders of the "high-brow" art world.

SurfBEAT features a broad cross-section of what is collectively
referred to as "lowbrow" artists. From world-renowned to local heroes:
Surf artists, Animators, Hotrod air-brushers, tattoo artists,
skateboard artists, concert poster illustrators, tiki carvers, pin-up
photographers and sundry ne'er-do-well artists converge in a
celebration of decadence sure to titillate and amuse all but the most
puritanical pillars of the community.

The show opens MARCH 15 at The Light Gallery in Costa Mesa.
Please check out the flyer and watch for show updates at

Thanks For Supporting the ARTS!

Hope to see everyone there....if you only make it to one show this month.....on Saturday March 15.......from 6-midnight.....make it this one!

GEEK ALERT:

i am completely GEEKED for our show on the 15th. As if the debut of a future HALLMARK Crazy Al tiki isnt enuff, we have also had some of my all-time favorite artists come sniffing around to be included in our little show...to the point that i have had to bump a dozen or so of lil'lost tikis little gems.

E.g., Drew Brophy is bringing up a 3' X 8' opus he created for the show. Phil Roberts is bringing up the first surfboard he has ever painted. Bill Campbell is debuting a surfer girl painting (yes, the Bill Campbell that illustrated the WIERDOS model kits produced by HAWK in the 60's!!).

And get this geek-o-philes, Stephen Blinkenstaff (famous for his Cramps album cover for Bad Music for Bad People and heir apparent to the great Basil Wolverton) has sent a couple vintage monster illos.

We also have surf-themed 1-shot paintings from 3 of Japans leading 'lowbrow' artists, and tikis from carvers from France, Germany and Denmark (mahalos to Brudda Tok Tok).

And if all that doesnt have you salivating, i just picked up a dozen or so cased of beer from our pals at Hinano Tahiti beer along with red and white wine from Twinfin wines and a couple cases of Bacardi rum to muddle up a Mojito or two.

and one last update for the artists: Remember that all artists must where clothing. This is NOT a clothing-optional reception.

Don't worry about Kinny, Clydes. Surfboards are like trucks and sports cars---the guys who have the biggest most powerful ones are trying to make up for their physical inadequacy.

Spoken like a True Village person,Ernie!
By the way...isn't baldness a physical inadequacy?

GROG have a piece here at the house that Doug Horne left for the show. How should GROG get it to the gallery?

D

Grog should use big round stone as wheel. Wheel makes it easier to move big items from cave to cave.

We're still hanging some more tonight Ernie-Please bring it down as there's a lot of work and Dougie needs a great spot...
contact the curators Big Toe or Candy and they will take care of the details......But you really should drive it down...We put you on a Flyer for the show,it's the least you could do ....

Grog, thanks for confirming that you are in possession of the erstwhile Horne. We were getting a bit nervous. Who the hail is in charge of this show anyway?!?! ROOKIES!

Is anyone coming down from that neck of the woods that can mule it for us??? there's a frosty Hinano in it for ya!!

for that matter, anyone seen a Tiki Shark print or 2 laying about??? we are still missing those! And don't tell Ben Strawn that we have misplaced 2 of his paintings!!!!

SPECIAL THANKS to Senors RUZIC, BAMBOO BEN and CRAZY AL for helping hang the show. we spent 5 hours and i think are about 1/5 of the way up.

honorable mention awards of the night go to Link for Chatty Cathy award and Trish Lurie for Best Lower Belly Tattoo by an artist award AND for coming all the way down from Hollywood to drop art.

Due to a bad turn of technological luck, bad timing and simple procrastination I was unable to get my bigger piece ready for the show and finished by the deadline. However, I did get my two humble smaller pieces over to UPS today and they should be arriving in Costa Mesa Thursday morn and just in time for the Sat opening.

Super big thanks to Da Toe and LLT for all their help, patience and inviting me to be a part of this most spectacular of shindigs. Have fun and know I will be there in spirit and looking forward to seeing the pics!

Have fun kiddies!!!
