Hmm, maybe I should take up cigar smoking again...

Hamo NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

MadDogMike your career prohibits smoking. On the other hand it doesn't stop you from making fun art. I like your boat. Wendy

 :P

Will, Hamo, Wendy - thank you.

Wendy, Hamo is safe - the ashtray sold :D

Mad Man- great execution
Job security? :)

Thanks Jon. I set my retirement date for March 22nd... 2025  That's when I turn 66 yrs and 8 mos anyway, we'll see :D

I'm looking forward to your retirement. You will have so much more time to delight us with all of your creations! Five years will go by really fast.

Meanwhile keep on going at the best pace for you and I'll keep on checking back. Hugs, Wendy

M

Hey MDM, Cool art creations! I actually have a couple cigar ashtrays because I like the look of them even tho I don't smoke. I just like the look of them on my patio. :tiki: :music: :)

5 years
That’s 10 art swaps pre-retirement
Lol

Cheers my friend

I started a fish hook pendant about 10 years ago, I found it this weekend and so I finished it. About 3 inches, made from Desert Ironwood (Olneya tesota). Very hard and dense (I don't think it will even float) This is the natural color with just Tung Oil finish

You could hook a big one with that one. Wendy

Nice, Mike!

And we're back!

2020-4-28 PNG0 April 2020 I made a Papua New Guinea themed art was for my patio. In the center is a Gope Board – Pine. A “family crest” of sorts, made by many peoples of the Papuan Gulf including the Kikori, Baimaru, Uruma, Hohao, and Orokolo

2020-4-28 PNG2 Human Femur Dagger – Ceramic. The Asmat people usually make daggers from Cassowary leg bones but some are made of human femurs

2020-4-28 PNG3 Hornbill Skull – Polymer Clay. The Huli men of the Southern Highlands wear these bird skulls as necklaces

2020-4-28 PNG4 Lime Spatula – Poplar Wood. Part of the paraphernalia used to chew Bezel Nut, a mild stimulant, Inspired by the Massim people of the Trobriand Islands

2020-4-28 PNG6 Mask – Mango(?) Wood. Carved by Will Anders of Florida. Received as part of a Tiki Central Art Swap

May 2020 - I made a rum bottle chandelier. Used a Dremel with a diamond cutoff blade to cut the bottoms off of various liquor bottles and attached them to an Appleton rum barrel head I made 2020-05-28 Lamp

June 2020 - from the 2020 TC Art Swap. I tried some more wood carving and made a lamp. Box and front made from poplar wood, behind Tiki and palm tree is a sushi mat and a red buld.

September 2020, another lamp. Started with a "Cooley Hat" (Is that an offensive term? I'm not sure what else those are called?). Added a wood frame with plexiglass panels. The orange fabric was a shirt that a friend brought back from Tahiti for me. Unfortunately, he underestimated my fatness and the shirt didn't fit. The fabric was attached with weather-proof Modge Podge. The bottom is made from bamboo rings and poured acrylic.

October 2020 - Another lamp for my friends Chris and Lisa Curtis at the Pau Hana Cove. Ceramic cylinder decorated and glazed. Light shines out the bottom to the bar and also through the cut-outs

February 2021 - I have a facination for the Baining Firedance imagery and have done several different pieces with it - a shirt, a couple mugs, a couple paintings, I even decorated a tent for Mojave Oasis with Baining masks. I decided to created a full sized replica of a Baining mask. The originals are made with a bamboo frame and covered in barkcloth. I made my frame from wire and covered it in muslin cloth. Then I put a couple off flicker bulbs behind it to put the "fire" in "firedance"

November 2021 - I saw an old puzzle mug from the 1700. at the time they were a fairly common form of tavern entertainment, you serve someone their drink in one of these mugs then watch them struggle to figure out how to drink from it. I decided to make a Tiki themed one and used the Hawaiian Pahu Drum as inspiration. Because of the cut-outs in the side, you can't tip it to drink from it or the drink will spill. There are 4 spouts on top, you need to cover 3 and use the 4th as a straw.

Here's a link to video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDq4Vw9vttU

January 2020 - Another puzzle mug, not really Tiki. I wanted an abandoned temple ruins in the jungle, I named it Shambala after the Three Dog Night song

Another video with me as the "model". Not near as pretty as Yesenia above! Video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMylfQzkw7c

2022 -1-14 Shambala

February 2022 - I found out my Pele Bar is a lie! I have based much of my bar "branding" on a statue that was supposedly the volcano goddess Pele. Now it looks like that image is actually the Hawaiian god Lono. Well, too late to change now LOL 2022-2-11 Swizzle1

I wanted some swizzle sticks with my "Pele" image on them

2022-2-11 Swizzle2 I made a couple of masters out of modeling clay. It turned out to be too soft to mold much detain. Next time I will make the masters out of baked polymer clay.

2022-2-11 Swizzle3 Used silicone to pour a mold

2022-2-11 Swizzle4 Pored the mold with orange acrylic resin

2022-2-11 Swizzle5 Out of the mold, needed a bit of clean up

2022-2-11 Swizzle6 Finished

Nice work Mike.

"September 2020, another lamp. Started with a "Cooley Hat" "

I took a light into Tais Asian bistro to show Seong and all of the Philippine workers were staring at it and talking to each other about it I think it was the hat that grabbed their attention not the light.

Skip!!!! Good to hear from you!

I like those puzzle mugs. And thanks for posting the videos--I looked at several others on your channel. I especially enjoyed your TikTok rant: https://youtu.be/LWbxaMbELrU

And I was shocked by the tour of the backyard and patio. Have you ever shared the fact that you have a poor man's tiki jeep?!

Hamo! Glad I could entertain you LOL You like my Suzuki? That was sitting in my parent's back yard for 30 years so I put it in my back yard instead. Parts for those are hard to come by for anyone who is trying to keep one on the road so I donated the engine, trans, windshield, gas tank, etc. to a guy in southern Utah.

I missed the swizzles on fb! I thought I would recognize everything, but I did not. It's so much fun to see you start into resins. Those are so cool. I like Tiki Central for tikis so much better than any other place. We are back!!!

Thanks Wendy. I had problems with the resin I used so I ordered some more and it came in yesterday. Hope to try again real soon :)

I found a 9 inch swirled glass globe at Ross for $17 with a 3 inch hole in the top of it, decided to make a fish float lamp out of it.

My Tiki space is outdoors so I use nylon paracord, last a lot longer than jute. I needed 100 feet. 01

8 pieces of rope, each about 13-14 feet. Step one of a lanyard knot. This video is a bit goofy but shows this knot well https://youtu.be/2zgo48dRuC8 02

Lanyard knot step #2 03

Finished lanyard knot 04

I use a simple overhand knot instead of the more traditional square knot, easier to adjust length as you tie. It doesn't lay as flat as a square knot but adds more "texture" 05

First round of knots. I tied them 2 inches out from the center knot. The orange Post-It has a mark at 2 inches to keep my knots consistent 06

Second round, be sure to pull all knots tight 07

Taped to the globe to keep it from slipping around 08

The knots are no longer 2 inches as the circumference of the globe increases. I don't measure any more, just try to keep them even. After a couple more rounds of knots and tape, flipped the globe over using a container or bowl to keep it from rolling around. 09

Finished the last rounds of knots. Didn't really have a game plan to finish, just wrapped all the cord together to make a loop and tied it off tight 10

Wiring was simple. Cut the receptacle end off an extension cord and wired a candelabra socket on using heat shrink tubing. 11

Pushed the bulb and socket into the globe between the cords and used twist ties to attach the wires to the loop. The bulb just hangs in the center making it simple to change the bulb when it burns out. I use LED bulbs because they last a long time and don't make any heat. Note that the lamp hangs from the rope loop, NOT the electrical cord. Done and ready to hang. 12

Finished lamp. I need to find a dimmer bulb, maybe a green one 13

I ran across this recipe for the Hai Karate.

2 oz Aged Rum

1 oz Lime Juice

1 oz Orange Juice

1 oz Pineapple Juice

2 t Maple Syrup

1 dash Bitters

Looks OK but definitely not stellar. A normal person would just move on. Not me, I would say "Hey, I can spend a few hours making a mug that is a replica of a Hai Karate cologne bottle to serve this mediocre cocktail in"

Step 1 - Roll out a slab of clay, wrap it around a cylinder. Let it set for a while to dry and firm up a bit image000005

Step 2 - Walk away and hear it fall image000002

Step 3 - Start over LOL image000001

Step 4 - Add a bottom image000004

Step 5 - Paint on a black underglaze label. Allow the glaze to dry but not the clay. Cut a line to seperate the bottle from the lid image000003

Step 6 - Carve the letters into the label image000000

I'm glad to see you using underglaze on greenware. There were so many times I would see different artists fire their greenware and then put on underglaze, refire, and then do a wipe on top or something like that and do another fire, and I would keep thinking they could have saved a step/fire by just putting the underglaze on the greenware. I've saved myself plenty of time that way, plus I don't get runny mascara eyes on Tiki Bobs when I do the eyes and mouth as underglaze on greenware.

I was using it here as a sgraffito to get clean white letters on a black surface but I like underglaze on greenware pretty well. Save a step wherever you can!
