Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!

Hurricane Heyward's Mai Kai Black Magic.

One of the most stellar cocktails on this planet. Can't wait to get down there this summer & try the real thing..

say, any grapefruit in that Bali Hai zombie?

I don't think so. The menu just says "fruit juices" but I do not remember tasting any, certainly no Dons mix. But I usually have a Mai Tai first so I might not be a good (sober) judge of that. :)

So you guys checked out Keg & Bottle? Cool!

Yes! Thanks again for the tip!

It's been a little while since I had one, but I don't really remember tasting grapefruit in the Bali Hai Zombie, either. I'm pretty sure there's guava nectar in it, making the pink layer.

Limited myself to two Mai Tai's at Tahiti Nui and then went back to our room in Princeville. Now I'm fixin oj, pineapple juice, a squeeze of lemon , and a generous shot of Maui dark rum for me and my tiki queen to imbibe in the safety of our room. Nobody needs a dui.
Maui dark mixes well but is definitely not a sipper.
Cheers

hurricane hayward's tribute mai kai Zombie. tart but tasty

(jawohl, sonnig und rummig, es hat grapefruit saft)

Had a Tropical Itch here at the hotel lobby bar. Was o k but
I switched to longboards

starting early--

HH's tribute Black Magic... (used cuban-strength coffee in lieu of kona)

A

Last of a bottle of Angostura 1919 - not sure if I'll replace it straight away but a nice 'golden' sipper! :)

followed up with a pint of draft CCB Cubano Espresso Brown Ale. damn delicious.

now HH tribute to MaiKai's Mutiny.

seems bit more coffee forward than the black magic, altho a weaker tasting drink overall..

The actual Mai-Kai Black Magic is the more coffee-forward of the three coffee snifter drinks. The Mutiny strikes a more equal balance between the Kona coffee and the fruit juices, and the Hukilau is the tamest of the the three in terms of the coffee flavors. I slightly prefer the Mutiny to the Black Magic but they are both fantastic.

Mai-Kai Barrel-O-Rum from the Taboo Table recipe. Out of Coruba again (stuff goes fast here) so made it with Appleton 12. Also subbed ED 5 for the white rum. Tasty, but I prefer it with Coruba. Better hit the rum shop tomorrow.

Corn N Oil with Cruzan Blackstrap and homemade Falernum. Yum!

Sehen? Grapefruit ist gut in jeder Sprache!

KD

Has anyone subbed or added Coffee Brandy in either the Black Magic or Mutiny (or for that matter the Bum's Krakatoa)? They're both awesome Mai Kai drinks; though I might give the Mutiny a slight edge as far as complexity of taste.

I haven't subbed coffee liqueur in the Mai-Kai tribute recipes but I sub coffee liqueur for coffee syrup all the time in the Kaliki Cooler and other drinks calling for coffee syrup. I think you'd still get a good drink if you subbed liqueur in a Black Magic or Mutiny but it certainly won't match the flavor intensity of double strength Kona or Cuban coffee.

Bulleit Manhattan before dinner.

Rittenhouse 100 Manhattan after dinner. Sadly, the last of the bottle and not something we get locally.

Sipping a small shotglass of Uncle Val's Botanical Gin. Truly an enchanting experience. Gin is generally not intended to be sipped neat, but this stuff is truly one of the exceptions. I can't wait to try it in a Pegu Club Cocktail side-by-side against my Hendricks gin.

Finished the Manhattan Trilogy with a Masterson"s Rye Manhattan. Gorgeous rye, almost too good to mix. Sticking with the sweet vermouth and Ango vibe but getting back to the rum with a Sunny&Rummy Pirate's Passion.

I had one of these -- rum and elderflower liqueur and other stuff. It was good. Quite refreshing.

Scallywag Cocktail

Looks like a great use for St Germain elderflower liqueur! I had a big bottle of it a couple years ago and it took me forever to get through it, mostly by pouring it for guests who wanted something sweet and light. I will have to try the Scallywag - it looks refreshing. Do you think the choice of Blue Chair rum makes a big difference? Just curious about comparison with other rums. I haven't had that brand and was thinking of Cruzan Silver or Don Q Silver as a substitute.

I used the Blue Chair because I was trying it out (and it was their recipe). But I doubt it would affect it much if you subbed a good white rum.

a pint of draft Red Hook Pumpkin Porter.

my first time sampling Ron Matusalem clasico.

reminds me much of Havana Club 3 year old...

1934 Zombie Punch. still tart, still dry, sill scrong...

Have you tried the following recipe?

RAY'S MISTAKE

1/2 oz Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 oz Passion Fruit Syrup
1/2 oz Maple Syrup
1/2 oz Simple Syrup
1/2 oz Orange Curacao
1 oz Soda Water
3 drops Vanilla Extract
3 drops Almond Extract
1/2 oz Light Puerto Rican Rum
1/2 oz Gin
float Coruba Rum

Wrapping up a nice night with a couple of longboards. Had a ginger ,lime and silver rum cocktail(Ono,) and a Mai Tai (awful,) at the St Regis in Princeville and a French 75 at the Westin Princeville which was superb! Still gotta pack for the flight back to Cali tomorrow. Ugh!
I love California- it's packing I hate
