Dark and Stormy back at the Tonga Room

hang10tiki: there's something wrong with you. In a really, really good way.

HB- lol

Here's a new one I just whipped up:

"Good Head" - created by Ian “Rum Ambassador” Burrell (see below) at his seminar, “The Wonderful NEW World of Tiki Cocktails: 10 Reasons Why It’s Here to Stay,” at the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival on Sunday, April 27.

Don't blame Ian for the name. The seminar attendees were challenged to come up with one, and that's the best we could do. But the drink sure was a surprise. I'll share the exact recipe in an upcoming story, but the ingredients were: Pusser's, Bacardi Superior and Appleton VX rums; fresh cucumber; apple juice; agave nectar; and lime juice. Very fresh and clean but also very potent.

And I even got a chance to sip from the head ...

Thanks OB Tiki! Just used my last free Mai Tai (drink ticket) that you gave me. I appreciate it man!

At the Newport Beach Tommy Bahama’s I had a Mai Tai, a Painkiller, and I shared a navy grog with my wife. We met a “mixologist” we hadn’t met before. When he starts his shift he spreads his “kit” out like a surgeon. THe kit includes 3 black Boston shakers and various cool looking bar tending utensils. We chatted a bit-turns out he started out at a tiki bar in Colorado called “Adrift”. He seemed to know quite a bit about tiki/tropical drinks. To watch him work is nothing short of amazing. His name is Andrew Winters and he can walk the walk as well as talk the... . The drinks were outstanding-good as any I have had at “real” tiki bars and better than most places that claim to be a tiki bar. That’s saying a lot cuz there are a lot of constraints (corporate rules/policies) at bars like TB’s
Mahalo Andrew,was a pleasure!
Btw, check out “Adrift “ tiki bar , Denver Colorado on Google.

mint julep!

Wow, when you used the quotes it actually sounded like you were going to slam the guy/establishment.

Sorry Wizz, didn’t intend to mislead you.
I used the quotes cuz that’s what my eyebrows looked like as I watched this wizard at work. Andrew is amazing! If I tried shaking two boston shakers at one time I would probably hurt myself. Easy peasy for Andrew. Check him out if you are ever in the area.
Cheers to you!
Btw, I like Tommy Bahama’s-Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and my favorite in SoCal, Palm Desert

Yeah, only use quotes when quoting people or it looks like sarcasm.

Such as when you mention "real" tiki bars, which makes me think they are serving Hawaiian Punch mixed with Malibu and an umbrella. :D

From this weekend, courtesy of the Polynesian Village Resort in WDW from Remixed:

You should have joined in the conversation as to why people buy SS. :D

Puka-Puka Punch from Potions of the Caribbean page 175. I had to use Cruzan Aged for the Pontalba rum and Clement VSOP as the rhum agricole. . . otherwise everything else was as written.
Makes for a tasty drink especially in the mug as pictured:

Painkiller with a blend of Ed Hamilton's Pot Still Black Rum and Smith and Cross. Funky as hell.

Hey Cuba Libre, long time no drink... Oh yeah, I remember why, you are boring...

Hey Hemmingway Diaquiri, long time no drink... I don't know why, you are delicious!

Continuing the bitter liqour theme :

Hey Jungle Bird - good to see you again...

Hey Jet Pilot - come on in... you are a regular visitor :)

Why am I addressing the drinks like they are entering my house?

I don't know but all the subsequent drinks were better than the Cuba Libre.

Ok, last one ~ Saint James Rhum Vieux:

:)

Italian tonight, so Negroni time.

Just settled into a nice Krakatoa Punch, using Trader Sam's recipe… And I've got dry ice and mood lighting set up on my mug collection.
