It's currently -11f with a windchill of about -35f at the moment, and predicted to get worse for the next two days.

I was surprised by the color, too, but it was tasty. I'm looking forward to trying the Barbancourt with a darker Jamaican, probably Coruba. And at some point I need to get a bottle of Appleton 12 (or whatever it's called now).

Rum Scaffa

Scaffas are room temperature mixed drinks not diluted by water; however, in Rum Cookery & Drinkery, Vic says to shake with ice (but I stayed true to the original). He also calls for light Puerto Rico rum, but I used Barcardi 8, which is quite enjoyable.

Little recap of the past few days.

I was in Tucson for the mineral show so I took the opportunity to stop off for booze and chow at the Kon Tiki. I ordered the Kon Tiki Mai Tai knowing full well that I wasn't going to get anything even resembling a mai tai, but I really wanted a swizzle stick to add to my collection. After that I tried a rum barrel and a zombie. To be brutally honest, none of them were that good or that strong. They all looked and tasted more alike than different, which leads me to believe they might have a base mixer that they're doling out for everything. I did like the food though, the skewers and crab rangoon both hit the spot, and the interior was great what with the clam shell fountain and the big tiki rising out of the floor. Next time I go though, I may have to sneak in a bit of LH 151 to give those drinks some teeth.

When we got back I found that an important PSA regarding the risks of crossing up a rum drinker had finally arrived in the mail, so we celebrated with a few zombies made with rums from the private stock.

Daiquiri

Started with a Coconaut Re-Entry:

Then, since I had the blender out, decided to try the Aku Aku Lapu from Remixed. Eh. Tasted like watered down juice with rum. Not dry enough to highlight the rum, not sweet enough to punch up the juices. I dumped it back into the blender and added 1 oz. of hibiscus syrup. Much better. It's still not a great drink, but that extra sweet brought it closer to balance. Curiously, this one's not on the Grogalizer that I can find.

I'm a fan. I'd tried their previous version of this and regretted not picking one up for myself. This bottling has additional aging in ex-scotch barrels. It's interesting for sure but I'll need to try it at the start of my next drinking excursion rather than the tail end to give more refined details.

Celebrating a new job by opening a bottle from my secret stash. I'd heard this stuff was so old that it'd lost all its hogo, but I think it's still in there, just a little more staid and gentle, mixed with a good deal of oakiness and fruit that kind of reminds me of calvados.

I picked it up during the last Shipwrecked at The Warehouse in MDR. Grider Co, the people who make all the copper and steel swizzles, was selling them. I managed to get the very last one.

Hey, Pat! I got it at the 99 Ranch Market, which is thankfully only a couple of blocks from my house. I've checked at least a dozen other Asian grocers in my area and none of them carry it so I feel your pain. It costs a bit below $5 and is in the aisle with the honey, jam, and canned fruit.

The company's name is Sarang Tawon. I believe they're based in Indonesia. I know they make several other syrup flavours like raspberry but have never seen them at the store. I'd love to try them as the passion fruit one is made with real sugar and is delicious, if a little strong - unlike homemade or Small Hand Foods, I usually have to back off Sarang Tawon a bit or it can overpower.

I had the same experience with it. So thick and concentrated in flavor that you have to shave maybe 25-30% off the recipe's measure, but I say that just makes it last longer. I know that they also make a coco-pandan syrup that I'd like to try in a daiquiri variant.
