"Greeter" - now that's pretty cool. I like the simple moody vibe off of that one.

"Lester" - What can I say other than he must be pickled by now, sitting at the Mai Kai this long!

LOVE THEM BOTH...

Thanks Greg! And yeah...He's probably downed a lot of Barrel's by now!

Robert, is that PNG tribesman face lamp based on something or did it come outta yo' brain?

No Mike, Lester is the only true creation of mine in the painting. Everything else is straight out of the Mai Kai's Tahitian dining room. I'll post some of my reference pics tomorrow!

For MDM and anyone else interested....below are pics of the Mai Kai dining room my painting takes place in. My wife, the kids and I love having dinner here! And I've made the ultimate sacrifice and ate dinner here many times in order to properly soak up the ambiance to then translate it to my painting! :D

I of course have taken some liberties with the room for the sake of the painting!

Robert, I like your version of the lamp - it reminds me of a Papua New Guinea tribesman

Since I can't visit the Mai Kai, I appreciate your "sacrifice" of spending so much time there in order to obtain a more authentic painting for me :D

Groovy work!

Yeah, there is some resemblance. And as to the Mai Kai...I may need a few more visits soon to get the room "right"! :)

Hi All! Stopped work on Lester again (he's driving me nuts!) to do something I've been planning for some time. A painting on a cigar box. Here are my steps so far (excuse the blurry pics!) Should make a great swizzle stick holder! :)

Did a bit more work tonite. I'm really liking this and hope to do more soon....have a few cigar boxes laying around....

Very nice Swizzle Stick box Robert, reminiscent of black velvet

Yeah that's what I'm kinda going for. It looks so much nicer in person. Everyone who sees it comments that it feels like something that was printed on the box that has faded and been scratched off with time.

My first impression was that the black was on top of the color and was scratched off to make the design. The technique is called sgraffito in ceramics, not sure what it would be called in painting.

That's a good idea! There's scratchboard, which is india ink over a white clayboard I have an illustration on scratchboard up at my tikitower.com gallery.

Concurrently working on both of these...did a bit of work on Lester. Got some encouragement from some of the folks at Mai Kai who saw it on Facebook. They seemed to love it so that helped with some of the frustration I've been having with it. And I'm almost done with the cigar box....adding a few final touches, mainly of black. I really am enjoying working on this and hope to do many more soon!

Here are some pics!

Cigar Box Tiki is done!

For those of you in the South Florida area, some of my work will be at Bear & Bird Boutique + Gallery's Small Stuff 4 show starting Nov. 21st. I will have a couple of original paintings plus my prints for sale there. Info at link below!

Robert I was out of town for a couple of days and missed your finished box - SWEET!!!
(I know you're only about 90 miles from Cuba, is it full of Cuban Coronas? )

Ha! Thanks Mike, and no....this box contained "Cuban Coronas" straight out of the Dominican Republic! But they were smoked up before I acquired the box!

I started a Tiki Tower page on Facebook. Some of you here who are already FB friends of mine have received an invite to the page. Anyone else can follow me there by clicking "LIKE" at the top of this link'd page:

Thanks Chris! I'm very happy with it! Hope to do more soon!

I see the light at the end of the tunnel! Added some window reflections and darkened up the painting over all....need a few highlights and I'm calling it done!

Lester is almost done.....starting a new Cigar Box painting. This box is about 8x14 inches!

Robert, Lester looks great! How do you tell when he's done? :D

You sniff him!

Well, after almost 3 months, Lester is done! I'm still working out a title....here he is!

If anyone is interested in viewing my steps, they are in order on my website. Just follow the link below:

Also, I've recently completed some non-Tiki paintings, including a grown up Charlie Brown and Alice In Wonderland's The Hatter. Those can be viewed at my zerostreet site at the link below:

Congrats Robert! Great job all the way around. Nice little details like the reflections in the window. Now what's the next project? :D

PS that Hatter dude looks pretty creepy!

Thanks Mike!

Next up is another non-Tiki painting. I'm really hoping this one goes to the Harold Golen show at the ModMiami event next March. It's a 50's sci-fi pulpy painting....you can see my sketch and follow steps here:

http://www.zerostreet.net/?p=980

I'm sure I'll be taking Tiki breaks during the process...maybe work on the new cigar box...and those will be posted here!

Been busy working on a pulp-ish science fiction painting and was struck with an idea I quickly sketched out. Don't know if this will be my next painting, but I thought I'd share it here anyway. I'm really enjoying going through pulp magazine covers, I love that style and I hope to incorporate that into this sketch when I get around to painting it!

A title came to me, as I sketched the idea out, which I think will stick: THIS TIKI GOES NOWHERE!

nice!

Almost done with my pulpy, mid century, sci-fi painting....anyone interested can see steps over at Facebook or Zerostreet. Here's the Zerostreet link:

Also, I am working on a tiki art iphone app. We are in the beta stage. I hope to launch very soon....here's a tease:

Hi All,

Below is an actual screen shot of my iphone app which I hope will be released soon. It's basically a book if my art, with sketches and finished works. Also included is ASK THE TIKI GOD. With a simple shake of the device, or a press of the skull, the Tiki God will answer all those pesky Yes or No question you just don't have time to answer yourself! More soon!

Ha! Thanks Mike!...and more possible answers than a coin would give you!

Just got in from a visit to Mai Kai where they announced the winners of their logo contest. Unfortunately my submitted designs (see below) were not picked.

I also picked up a carved rendition of my DO NOT MOCK THE TIKI GOD illustration. Carved by TC's AlohaStation. I think he did a great job capturing the feel and character of my illustration! Here it is:

Hi All!

Finished up 2 non-Tiki paintings that I am very happy with! Both can be seen at the http://www.zerostreet.com home page. One is a Fez'd Groucho Marx and the other is a Frazetta/scifi pulp cover inspired Man Operated-Robot-Destroys City-To Get Girl painting! Check em out if you can!

I will be vending at the 2011 Hukilau in June, hope to see many of you there! So I expect that from now till then I will be working on only Tiki related artwork like this new cigar box painting seen below. The box measure 17x7 inches and is about 5 inches deep.

Also my iPhone app should be available very soon! It contains 45 pages of my artwork plus a nifty ASK THE TIKI GOD game! All for a measly .99cents!

Starting to add in the Tiki...

worked just a bit more....done for tonight!

Reworking the Tiki's eyes!

TIKILANDIA, my iPhone/iPod App is now for sale at iTunes!

It features 45 pages of my artwork (sketches and final pieces) plus ASK THE TIKI GOD! Ask any YES or No question and The Tiki God will answer!

Ifany fellow TC'ers buy and enjoy it please leave a review at iTunes!

Here's the iTunes link:

Casablanca Groucho! That's hilarious (and well done too). Cigar box is looking good, keep posting progress shots :D
