Thanks Jason!
let's get Huell down to a Tiki Art Show!
get him liquored up and hear what he REALLY thinks about things... :)
I have a surfboard that's been awaiting for a while...
about time it became something!

Wendy...you are the sweetest!
i love having everybody and their art all in one place!
Kind of an Artist Colony of sorts....

Babalooooooooooooooo!
You are the MAN!
such range and depth and research
We'll get that platter to you SOON!
next time i can connive Squizz to visit
we'll tie it to the top of his ride!

Tucker's tikis-Mahalo man! That sculpture was a PAIN to paint!
it must've weighed 80-100 pounds! OOMPH!

Here's a New one that will introduce our loose theme of skeletons for this day's gallery entry....
"Late night walk"
Cel vinyl and paintpen on canvas

There's a step-by-step/brief tutorial on this piece
HERE!
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=19904&forum=18&start=2385&2397

here's the sketchbook entry

Here's the original character
this piece was for the TIKOT! Tiki Tarot invitation at the freaky boutiki gallery

the original blackline art

then i added some color and distress to it
"Death"
Sharpie and ink on board
private collection

in fact, here's that Skeletal moai inspired by this piece

Here's the card i got picked to create for the show
"Judgment"
ink,sharpie,and pencil on watercolor paper

but we still need to finish the skeleton theme!

Here's a logo i designed for my friend lennie's clothing line
Keep your eyes peeled for tees, girls!
and Men..What better present for the missus ,eh?

here's another concept that didn't get picked
very inspired by Posada,as you can see...

you never know...this may end up on tees too!
:)

Speaking of tee-shirt designs
Dave's Not Home still has some of these available if you want one!
Cannibal King

Seeing we've wandered from the original subject matter of this week's entry..
let's just share some random stuff i've rediscovered...

Here's a submission for a group show
where the artists painted violins...
i guess they couldn't get over the clash of cultures
it was politely rejected..
:)

so i turned to ROCK AND ROLL!

Also here's some vinyl stickers that have long run out...

and a t-shirt and bag graphic for the
Rell Sunn Menehune Surf Contest

Well that's it for this entry!
have a great day!
:)

Hey Kinny, just perused your gallery. Came across the mug section, but there seems to be one missing! Otherwise, fabulous, brain-jarring work as usual!

Hey Jen!
Thanks for the visit,stranger!
And thanks for visiting the ever-growing gallery section!

One missing?
I think there's actually 2-3 that i need to track down..

There will be holes in this presentation
as i go thru 6 years of tiki artwork...
and the wheels of progress do move slowly...
But i promise to get every piece up here eventually...
If they're a mug-I'll add them to the mug post..etc etc

After perusing the thousands of folders these past few weeks
categorizing and checking off doubles....
i have found a few stragglers..
including a couple of shots of a lost Moai and his birdmen friends! :)
They are set aside and awaiting final photoshop examination...

Any of youse...
if you happen to have a good photo of some LLT work
that you haven't seen here
PM them to me
with title, because i can only remember so many titles
and plus, i'm in the trance state mostly while producing these...

right jymmy?
:)

Great to see our 3 faces totem in the mix.
That torso piece is killer diller!

Wow, my head is spinning. What an incredible variety.
I will definitely get in on that raffle at Oasis.

Darilyn

B

bump that Killer Diller!

just to be serious for one uncharacteristic sec., On first inspection, the whimsical content of Kinny's art can belie the amazing and beautiful craft of his art. But it is that dichotomy that makes Kinny's art stand the test of time.

but his hair is another story...it will surely fall out prematurely from all that dye and do fixative!

Ah-Hola Friends!

Jen... check the 3-D posting
there's a lil surprise in there i dugged up!

Jason-
Thanks! Why didn't you do a torso?
would have been gorgeous!
I miss the 3 faces..
but I'm glad they're a smiling in your hut
with such great company!

LiddleLola,
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
:)
I may get in on that raffle too!
it'll reimburse the $19 i spent shipping it!
i regret i wasn't able to wear it around the studio long enough before saying buh-bye to it....

Thanks Tom!
Glad that "Vocabulary for Success" book is workin for ya!
Lunch with Monkeyman tomorry!
and then ...a duel!

Well, today's addition to the gallery is ...CANNIBALS!

Alrightio!
Had a little smoke break and some coffeee mixed with Hot chocolate
and i am AMPED!

So.... why landscapes?
How are those Tiki?
well...let's wax philosophical for a minute...
Tikis come from a variety of locales
it's not only palm trees
tho, they do hold a prominent spot in Polypop..
A tiki alone can make for a good painting
but a tiki and a landscape
a world to "live" in
makes for a great painting!
most of the time...

So,in attempts to create a whole world with this Tiki theme
many studies of landscapes and strange locales was required
it's the least one can do for their art....
and sometimes a landscape will inspire a narrative...
or is just as important an element of the narrative...
makes you think..

on that serious note...
here are sketchbook studies of landscapes...
different approaches...serious studies
simplifications
stylizations
philosophicalmations
and all that.

Most of the titles for these are along the bottom...

Thank you.
i hope you've enjoyed this nature stroll...We should do this more often...
:)

The mind boggles! Off the chart, Ken, off the chart. Stellar.

I am stunned, really, absolutely fantastic work. I am stunned.

See what you started?
Half of the work i do wouldn't be possible
except thru the great effort, research, and skill
of you and your stadium full of contributions to the Tiki movement!

Thanks abstractiki!
in total, none of it seems like "work" at all.
Art is just what i do,can't stop it....
nothing too stunning about that
especially when you realize that 60% of our population has SOME form of schizophrenia
It's the Marine Corps discipline that actually focuses my energy
lest i end up like the majority of our culture
full of energy
but too scattered
to make much good out it...

No filling here,buddy....maybe -maybe a small pond...paper and paintings are THIN...
Yes i do sleep,Greg
but i go to bed thinking about art
and wake up thinking about art
and i think about it to and from work
and even at work
With all that inner-nagging
what's an artist to do?
:)
and Thank you G,for inspiring me further
and expanding the vocabulary and imagery of our humble yet powerful scene....

Welpers! Happy Easter!
I have a present for you...

HUTS!and other places of dwelling

so here they are...a collection of Huts!

T

Ken,

Thanks for the Easter goodies... you continue to inspire and just plain make me smile when I look at your work!

BTW, I have shown my Tribe (that's my 6 kiddos) your work on this thread and they are all blown away. My oldest just turned 13 and my youngest are 6 year old twins... They have been drawing tikis and leaving them on my desk :) One of the Tribe's all-time favorites from you is the octopus-squid-seahorse surfboard... the kids loved it! They also love your 'birdmen'... I forget what you call them, orongo or something like that?

Peace and blessings to you, my friend!

just so there's a record
and i don't do the same piece twice!

This next batch below are BooBen and Ken collaborations
kind of....
Ben takes his scraps and applies them to the board
however he wants!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!
and then it's the challenge of taking these areas that pop off the surface and to integrate them into a design that can be viewed from both the front and side!
like 3-d man!
gotta admire all those sculptors out there
most painters are just used to 2-d

Well anyway, it's like a mental chess game where you both win!
YAY!
Well, here they are....

i am providing an additional shot of each to show you the dimensionality, maaaaan!
groooooovy.

something about it just makes me happy!

Here's the dimensional areas
hilighted in pink so you could get a better idea of them...

Love the new work, Kinny! My fave is the Village Totem... I woulda bought it at Ben's if I coulda afforded it (and it was such a great price, too!)

Keep up the great work! (but really, you can probably stop for a breather!)

Gee Thanks Eric!
It is always a happy hug time when you two are around!
What a day that was!
Haven't taken a breather yet,but will soon....
i feel a lazy day comin on...
haven't had one of them in a while...

This new painting is my 3rd attempt
to create a satisfactory piece for the
Poly-Blend exhibition
at the Harold Golen gallery next month!
This art show will cover the many aspects of poly-Pop
Cuban/African/etc....
i chose ....Africa!
the Dark Continent beckoned
and after 3 attempts....
Success!

"Night of the Drums"
16x20
acrylic and cel vinyl on masonite

Here are some close-ups
just so you can get a feel of the textures
and subtle shadows
and whatnot...

There were 3 masks from 3 different areas used
i tried to remain faithful to the originals
and embellished
or edited each mask
only when necessary...

the drums are my favorite part...
they pop off the surface
and play with your eyes!

Well, that's it for now....
I'll be taking this next six months and working on a one-man show
that will cover ALL subjects and styles of the past 20 years
including,but not exclusively Tiki...
Most of that work i will share on FaceBook
but not here
cause it ain't tiki!
But fear not..
during the dry times
a subject will be chosen
(birds/fish/Lonos,etc.)
and post them all together
in an attempt to display and share
all my Tiki art...

Anyways that's the skinny,Minnie!
g'night!

R

oh wow! that piece turned out so rad!
you are definitely developing a new style and I'm diggin it!

6 months to work on your one-man show?! SWEEET!!!

plenty of time to bust out more developed and new styles! :D

Can't wait!

Kinny,

The Africa angle is killer.... love the drums.

So, where and when will your one man show be? Monica and I will have to look into making a trip to pay you a visit. I would love for her to see all the creative stuff you've done over the years.

peace,
Jason <

Looking good you Cack-Handed Boffin!!
