Hello folks!
Today i will attempt to catalogue
work inspired by Easter Island/Rapa Nui....

raves-yup. six months and i already have a huge list of pieces to do for this show..
Make it stop mom! make the voices stop!Thank you for the encouragement! :)

Jason-there is a hoard of wonderful African art, especially the masks
that share similarities with the lines and abstractions of some Polynesian art...
Sigh! Yet another avenue to follow and research...

I should be meeting with the gallery boys in the next few weeks
and hammering down a date for this.
it will be at the Caged chameleon gallery in Santa Ana
and it will be sometime in November...I will alert everyone when the details are solidified..
You and Monica are welcome to visit the studio anytime!
Just had a visit last Saturday from Sven and Naomi
before his SOUND OF TIKI presentation at Don's..
There's nothing better than to be able to visit with friends
in a quiet,slower atmosphere
engage in intelligent conversation
and share all the art in the studio with friends...
I find the feedback is more focused and all-encompassing!
:)

Toe-You Sir,are the cack-hand
and i the boffin...
:)

Kinny, according to my estimates you should have one painting for every man, woman, and child in America by Sept 23, 2012.

I miss the bright jeweltones, seems your palette has become more muted as of late.

More Moai! More Moai! More Moai!
More Moai! More Moai! More Moai!
More Moai! More Moai! More Moai!
More Moai! More Moai! More Moai!

Say that ten times fast! Whew!

I just relaxed and scrolled and enjoyed and enjoyed your art. An art instructor once told me that any time he added pink to a painting it sold first. I hate to be so girlie but I really liked those with pink in them a lot. I'm very fond of the bird too. The island with the moai cliffs were so cleaver. Thank you for every single one you post, love em, Wendy

Will you be calling that set Moai Madness?! tee hee! I loves me some Moai and boy did I get a Mo-EYE-full!

Up late...

check TikiCentral "quickly"...

end up scrolling through Kinny eye-candy...

will probably not be able to fall asleep because my brain is once again trippin' on Kinny beauty-madness!!!

lovin' "little rower"...
and "land of the fish"...
and "Moai King addressing the Stone Giants" (insane... intense color POP!)...
and the little dancing bird in "Moai Music" is awesome...
and you got just about everything in , including kava man it appears, on "the new arrivals" with great detail...
and of course I love the revelation piece!!!...
and "Visit to the Jungle Ruins" with the birdmen carved in green (my fav color) stone it appears...

oh, and "Awaiting" is more incredible every time I come across it... diggin' the skulls...

i guess that's about it. go ahead and package all those up and send them my way... i just finished a moai made out of legos i'm sure you would appreciate as an even trade :)

ok... now i will try to ease my brain into lala land.

peace,
Jason <

MadDog!
the palette wanders and either dictates or reinforces the mood...
it sure don't go where i tell it most of the time...
I'll make some requests and write some memos
and we'll see if we can get a few jewel-tones in the future!
:)

Jason!
Now that is a Tiki Tongue twister there!
Thanks for the visit!

Wendy-pink is a color that alot of artists are scared of...
I find it a quite respite from harsher tones!
Actually, if you wander over to my Other Crafts/pieces in flux thread
I'm actually working on a Shrunken head with ....
get this.....
pinks,purples,and greens!

Glad my Moai wanderings give you pleasure and happiness!
Mutual inspiration pact in Full Effect!

bead-stick to beading....
and lay off the comedy!

TikiDaye-Over-stimulation,be it television,video games,or psychosis-driven artwork
is not good before bedtime...
Sleepy-time is that chunk of our days that allow us to relax...
May i recommend a good book?
:)
Thanks to all y'alls who visit and smile and walk away with little pictures and stories in your brains!

Well, this new piece isn't exactly Tiki
but it kind of fits into the lexicon of subject matter
so i will share it.
This piece is a reflection of distrust and possessiveness that seems to
not only happen in the jungle
but also in our very neighborhoods....
So it's kind of an analogy/cautionary tale/social commentary piece
y'know...real artsy-like!
I painted it for that upcoming one-man show in November..

If you wanna see close-ups and details, they're on my facebook...
Enjoy you little monkeys!

"the Monkeys"
acrylic and cel vinyl on masonite
16x20

So creative, I love that the monkeys have such personality and look so devious with their trophy skulls. I feel your mind work as you decide which way to curl the tails or place the flowers and that's scary. Do you ever sleep? Wendy

Wow.....now that is inspiration! Thanks Ken.

TK

can't wait.

J

I was wondering when that batch was going to make its appearance. One of my favorites in that bunch! Still enjoy looking at it every day!

Right on Ken .

ALOHA Kids!
Time for some PNG-inspired goodies!

so talo.... you wait no longer! :)

Jentiki-yay! it's been a while since I've seen a lot of these fellows!
They seem to fly off to new homes almost as fast as they are created!
"the Greeting" is still one of my faves! Glad it brings you smiles a lot!

tyger jymmy-right arm...

Now it's time for PNG part One...
it's part One because there is a LOT!
this presentation below
had me stopping at the file "Arrival Studies"
in the A's!
(of course ,there was a PNG monkeypod and PNG sketchbook folders up top)

Anyways...Here they are...
First the Monkeypods!
These had long titles that i never committed to memory
usually naming the inspiration for it and locale...
So if you own one-you know the inspiration
everyone else...just enjoy what you can.
Some of these MAY still be at the Freaky Boutiki
or at Tiki Lee's Vegas room
awaiting a loving owner
just not sure...
there are so many!

and now for some drawings...

"Agiba Skullrack"
ink and tissue paper stain on watercolor paper

and some random sketchbook entries..

"the Apparition"
gouache on wood
private collection

"the Arrival"
acrylic and paintpen on canvas
private collection

Here's the original study
"the Arrival"
ink and sharpie and bleachpen on watercolor paper

Seeing as these Tropical Visitors
used a hi-tech form of transportation
I figgered the natives would begin to carve and incorporate their vehicles into their own art.....

Here's the many studies for this piece...

and remember fellow artists...
doing your research and doing studies
isn't just for kids anymore!
:)

Hope y'alls enjoy these as much as i enjoyed cookin em up!
Thank you, native genius Papua New Guinea peoples!

4

YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

""the Apparition"
gouache on wood
private collection"

Something that's listed as 'being in a private collection', is hanging on my wall!
I feel like Nathan Johnson when the new phonebook arrives!

who's Nathan Johnson?

i don't get out much y'know!

was thinking about you when i first opened the file today!
Miss ya Billy!

TK

i think they are refering to "navin johnson". steve martin's role in "the jerk".

4

Yup, Steve Martin in The Jerk! Didn't you get out much in 1980?

That was Bill. I'm Billy. You miss Billy? Kinny, that's like missing Herpes. Hell, I miss all of you......ah, sh#t......where's my freakin' tiki-rash!!!!

He Hates Cans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks y'alls!
I'm Billy-missin BIGTIME!

Artjam?
Chop?
around the end of june?
That would be enough suitable visit time
as well as art-makin time!

I love all the sketches and studies. Won-der-ful! One might even get the impression you're a real artist! :D

Thank you Sven...
Your visits and encouragement are always welcome!
Some days i feel like a real artist
other days..... a charlatan a hack an eyesore
i imagine everyone has those days
in their own ways....

But some days
after finishing an actual good piece
one does begin to feel like an artist of sorts!

Glad you like all the sketches and studies....
There so much visual imagery
that is easily embedded
by merely doing a study of it....

New pieces
"the Lonely Head"
acrylic and cel vinyl on masonite
private collection

and this one for the Tiki magazine
Beyond the Reef exhibition at the Freaky Boutiki
and held over during Tiki Oasis this year!

A little bit of Comic-Tragedy Maori monkey Business
for your eyeballs....

"the Doomed Crew"
acrylic and cel vinyl on woodburned crab bowl from Squid

That is all
Goodnight TC!

Love the Solomon Islands stuff. Nice segue from Solomon Islands to Shrunken Heads; a picture with both!

"Tantalus" - now that's funny stuff Maynard! Just out of reach :)

A

I just love bamboo frames in general, and the birds in particular.
Great style...T4S!

Beautiful pieces all! Masterful use of color and composition.

Awesome....
Just Awesome!!

TK

DAMN, KINNEY!

Such a treasure trove of material. I love them all but you already know that I guess.

Can't wait to hang-out with ya' bro in July. Mega stuff to catch-up on.

Take Care and Thanks for posting. G

You have incredible island style. I love it. I love all of it, but really enjoy the simple stuff (not that it's simple), like the sketchbook pages and the watercolors! Nice work!

HELLO!
POPPING IN BRIEFLY AND THEN...POOF!
I'll be gone for a week or two..
Doing lotsa commissions and MAJOR Studio Renovation...
If'n you'd like to see some of that....
theeeeen go HERE!

Mike...
Yes! Solomon Islands to Shrunken Heads...
It's been really fun categorizing and posting all these different aspects of Tiki!
"Tantalus"...a lil bit of classic mythological humor with a Tropical Twist!
Thanks for the pop-in!
Hope you can pop in the studio soooon! :)

amybean-Thank you my dear..
Rumor has it
hewey's next swap will have a bird's theme...
YAY!!!!

Jason-shush!
Get back to that canvas,velvet-jedi!

MeHeadhunter-
scroll down....a lil surprise for YOU!

talo ka-thanks man! I like to throw a gear in the narrative sometimes....
approach it a bit deeper than just a shrunken head
or a headhunter's village...Did that with Cannibals for awhile
(Lonely Cannibal/Haunted by Past meals/Remorseful Cannibal/Cannibal Family)
Took a look behind the psychology of the cannibal,y'know?

Greg=Soon,my friend!
and the studio should be pretty done by then!
Bring some booze and ....stuff!
:)
Thank you for always being such a positive encouraging voice in the community....

pennjones-Thanks pj!I have another raw sketchbook entry below for a recent commission
I like to share them because it's a fun way to break down the artist/audience barrier
to show them how sometimes a raw scrawl can develop and evolve..
But,i think you'll agree, sometimes just spilling it out all at once and fast
captures something that a painted version cannot capture without effort....

I'm currently working on a SECRET PROJECT that already has 10 pages of raw sketches invested into it...
will share those after the UNVEILING...:)
OOOH! How fun! SUSPENSEEEEEEEE!

Anyways, A big smile and thank you to all that happen to visit and get some eyefuls!

Anyways, this is kinda unprecedented, but I'm gonna post a finished commission RIGHT HERE!
Even before the Actual Owner-to-be has seen it....
We'll call him Mr. "M" to be all mysterious....

Anyways, Mr. "M" acquired this fine piece a while back...
"Drummer Possessed"
tissue paper stain, ink, and colored pencil on watercolor paper
private collection

He recently put put out a supervillian network search
and one of my agents arranged for a liason
under a bridge...

Anyways, Mr. "M" is a jack-of-all-trades
and is currently a high-level assassin for numerous countries...
Anyways, Mr. "M" is famous in his circle for owning a modified Didgeridoo of Doom
which he has used in countless successful missions...
Anyways, my assignment was to create another tribesman from the same village
playing this Didgeridoo...
This weapon has a distinct personalized pinstriping on it...
part of the mission was to capture this embellishment on said native's instrument....

Anyways, in the ever-consistent style of breaking norms and taboos and conventions and supervillian guild rules
may i present for the first time publicly..

"Night Song"
tissue paper stain, ink, and colored pencil on watercolor paper
private collection

and here's a close-up of the pinstriping...

And here you go,pennjones... an initial sketchbook study...

Well, I'm beat from a loooong day of getting yet another room of the studio all spiffy!
Been thinking of an open studio sometime next year,,,,,,,and an artjam too!
soon,my pretties!

Anyways! Have a great evening!

Digeridoo? I thought for sure he was from the Melanesian island of New Caledonia and that was a bagpipe chanter brought over from old Caledonia :D

2 good lookin' musicians Ken, think you can sign them on with Tikiyaki?

Night Song is absolutely Beautiful!!
I wonder...
Who is this mysterious assassin known as Mr. "M" ?
The striping is great...well,
everything is!!
Great Job!!

Love the title...
Night Song!!
Absolutely perfect :)

B

AWWWWESOME!!!
fun to see all that amazing artwork.

but what up with the "private collections".
does that mean they're owned by folks in the military? maybe stationed on the island of Guadeloupe?
or does it mean that they keep the collections in their private parts?
inquiring minds what to know!

Maaan!
i sure loathe even more than despise these vermin-covered unedjumicated arteesto hotshots
who just look at the pretty pictures
and don't even bother to read the text
and learn about the content....

from page one
about 2 paragraphs in
located on the very first post of this gallery thread....
and i quote.....

underneath all of that
if there is "private collection"
it means it was either bought
or i love it so much i kept it
or the wife snagged it...

You really should start asking for money
for your paintings
instead of reeses pieces and rat poison
then you can write "private collection" under their titles!

there's you're answer mr. funnypants
get off TC and skitter back to your paint cubicle
there's a BEYOND THE REEF show deadline
and that siren you've been working on
MUST be finished and beautiful VERY SOON!!!!!!!!!

Mike-No Tikiyaki sign-ups.....they're imaginary! they're drawings,silly!

Wess....
Thanks for chiming in
and being a part of the actual creation

Ken I love that you can do variations on the same theme and yet they all look different. I want to be a real artist when I grow up :)

TK

i'm still trying to do stick figures.

Mahalos Mad Dog!
in fact, if you scroll back up
you'll see that I've added a couple more that were buried behind some
ones and zeroes...
Variations
thinking really hard
and becoming that character for a moment
and feeling how that character would feel
or how a society of these would evolve and express themselves
Thinking beyond the parameters
but still paying attention to the original intent
sort of anchoring there
and floating outside the space-station...
That's the fun!
Creating a world
and then occupying it with characters, flora, fauna, and STUFF!
it's like an eco-friendly Sims!

I want to be a real artist when I grow up

You're already an artist,Mike!
it's the Growing Up part that concerns me...
:)

talo-don't give up... Do a little bit everyday
but only if you love it...
You'll get better everyday!
Keep disciplined!

Well, I'm forestalling the grunting drudgery of doing the final cleanup of my studio
so why not just post the rest of my cannibal pieces?

I would Die of shock if I were to live in your mind just for one day, even on a Slow one! Where and How do you find the time and energy to create this Incredible stuff And keep your Sanity? (Oh Yeah,, forget the sanity question, heh) And Then you STILL make time to Post all this beauty for us to see.
