Nice bowl mold Wendy - I like that you can use it for more than one type of bowl, cool!!!

The crates came out and I'm very happy with the color choice. I'll take photos soon. There is already another load in the kiln right now. I'm on fast track.

The bowl came out of the mold without any problems and so today I went to work on the Tiki Bob's for Grog's art show on the Events page. So here are my steps and hint for the day. Wendy

I had trouble getting the extra slip to pour out on my first Bob so I used a chop stick to start the flow.

Bob came out fine.

I poured the first bowl from my new mold, success. I cut away the clay on top that I didn't want for this bowl.

I cleaned up three small Bob's that I made this week.

I cut away some of the bowl and used slip to attach them to the sides.

Now that I see the photos I can see where they are not attached the same, live and learn. I should have made them on a surface that I could move. The bowl is stuck to my table. Hopefully it will come loose as it dries. I want it to dry slowly so I put a plastic bag loosely over it. 27 days until the show!

I started a second Tiki Bob project for the show. Dan and I went to Mazatlan in 1981 and he suggested that I make a Tiki Roberto in honor of the fellow in that show. That's Dan and I at bottom right dancing.

S

Everything's looking good Wendy. You certainly have been busy.

P

Ahhahaha that Tiki Roberto is fantastic. Your next piece should be a Lucha Libre Tiki Bob.

Wendy, amazing, the forbidden Island mugs, the bob bowl, everything is great!

Amy

MN

Wowy, wowy, wowy! Way awesome Wendy. Wholey guacamole! :)

wow! Such great work Wendy! Congrats!

M

Wow, super cool Bob bowl. I can't wait to see it finished. I know it's a lot of work sticking the small Bob's to the bowl.

The Fire and Ice set of Forbidden Island Tiki Crate stautes (50) and mugs (60).

Another week and I should have them finished are ready to package for the special party. Forbidden Islands 5th anniversary party on April 21, 2011 a Thursday. The actual anniversary date is 4/22/11 so I put that on the bottom along with the number of the mug/statue.

Swizzle, Queen Kamehameha and zerostreet thank you for your notes, they each brought a smile to my face, I appreciate them very much.

PockyTiki, Tiki Diablo put out a wrestling mug a few years ago, on a Tiki Bob it's a scary idea.

Mr.NoNaMe thank you for the poem I laughed as I repeated it.

Thank you everyone for your time, Wendy

MauiTiki, sticking the Bob's on the bowl was easier than getting the bowl unstuck from my table. It's fine now but that was a lesson to remember.

LT

I like that new glaze combo!

Great glaze colors Wendy, I love the way they turned out.

S

As i've just learnt from my classes so far, watching others glazing their pieces, it's amazing how different the colour of some glazes look before they are fired compared to what they actually change too. I wasn't sure what the statues would turn out like from your previous post of them all sitting on the table, they looked a funny red-brown, pink and grey, but they turned out fantastic. It's a real transformation. Well done Wendy, great work.

LOL Tiki and Beachbumz. I'm so glad you like the choices that I've made for the statue and mug Tiki Crates. I did a whole series of glaze tests before choosing and it was worth the work. Thank you.

Swizzle since you are on your way let me tell you what Babalu told me. Glaze Test, Glaze Test, Glaze Test. The photos of glazes in the order books and even the chips in the shops do not represent the colors well enough. Before glazing your art test the glaze.

I copied Babalu's glaze test wall and it works well for me. But MadDogMike and MauiTiki have other ways of doing this that I envy. I make clay "L's" and bisque fire them. Next I paint the glaze in three strips on each. 1, 2 and 3 layers of glaze and fire again. Oh but first I use an underglaze pencil on the bottom to label them and I record all the information in a binder.

When I go to glaze something I go to my wall and choose the colors L's and take them and the jars with me to where I'm painting.

Babalu's wall of test strips.

Some of my test strips in the kiln. Note that using a fork to make indentations will show you how the glaze will highlight your detail work.

My test wall.

Swizzle you should start now with your first tiki mug and keep on going. Enjoy, Wendy

We're going to a jazz show that night & we're busy that weekend, dangnabbit! Sorry we're going to miss the goings on and seeing these beauties in person. Awesome work, Wendy!

T

Wow, looks great Wendy!!! I can't believe how much work you've done!!

Love the glaze test wall, VERY good idea...

Hi TikiKirby, well I've been at it again. I'm always afraid that something will blow up in the kiln or that I'll ruin it with glaze that pops off so I've made more Bob's. I've posted these on the Tiki Bob show thread too but I want to keep everything I do here as well.

This is a shouldhavebeenbowl. No Tiki Bob bowls were made but they should have made them! Now I am.

My super carved Tiki Bob.

This is our family room. The shriner hat is used for my next Bob.

Shriner Zelzah Bob.

If this photo is blurry to you go to rehab. 60's Peacenik Bob.

Tiki Bob Decanter.

Tiki Roberto. Name changed to South of the Boarder Bob. On Gallery page you can see my South of the Boarder Bastard that I made years ago, page one and scroll!

Now I'll take a break while they dry then back to work. Cheers, Wendy

It all looks awesome Wendy!!! If you leave the Bob tops open on the Bob Bowl, you'll have 3 more places to drinks from - you could serve 4 different drinks at once (remember Babalu's Hiphipahula Bowl?)

Speaking of tops open, I was confused by the FI mugs vs statues. They are the same sculpt? The mugs have open tops and the statues have closed tops? For some reason, I thought the statue was something else and I couldn't figure out why you forgot to open the tops of some of the mugs

BK

Wendy, are these all one-offs?

Hi MDM, thank you, the two Tiki Crates are from the same sculpture but open on the top for the mug and open on the bottom for the statue. Then I glazed the two sets differently and took your idea for the set as fire and ice, thank you! The bottoms of the Bob's on the bowl are open so not this time for multiple drinks. (:

Big Kahuna, all the tall Bob's are 1 of 1's but I will make the bowl again for my husband and per requests. I still need to carve rings around the tikis on the Bob's that have smooth sides. The glazing will be the challenge for each of these but I'm looking forward to it.

Cheers, Wendy

Aloha Ms Wendy (and Dan)

AMAZING THREAD!!!!

really enjoyed finding this.

look forward to following your adventures!!

tom

Thank you so very much Beachbumz, rugbymatt, LOL Tiki, Lucky Jackson, little lost tiki, mp and McTiki. It makes my day to find that I'm not alone and that so many friends and friends to make are watching my thread. I'm having so much fun with these. Next year after the Sacramento Crawl is over I'll be able to enter one of my decanters into the show. Today I needed to go to fill up all the empty slip jugs and to pick up glazes that I can use on these Bobs. MadDogMike said Duncan Underglazes called Cover Coat do not run. I didn't have these yesterday but today I do! That also means more glaze tests and my wall is full of all the chips. The search is on for more wall space.

One Fifth of the amount of slip to pour the Tiki Crate Mugs/Statues for Forbidden Island. They are large and some are thick and weigh between one and two pounds.

Yesterday we Made our first 6 sided mold. It was of the decanter for the crawl. It took 7 straight hours and Bubble Wrap. I was afraid that I would ruin detail so I started with bubble wrap then a layer of cardboard and then the clay. Here are step by step photos of how we made the mold. Dan said it was by my brain and his brawn! What's a brawn? Cheers, Wendy

I use a straw to blow the mold soap out of my lettering.

For every side there is a massive amount of clean up. Dan's really good at mopping and sweeping. If you have not seen his skills on my carving thread (now on page two) check it out. He's my sweetheart!

Am I the first mold maker to use bubble wrap?

When we are ready to make the second mold using the first I'll have more photos of how that is done. I hope this mold will have the detail if not I'll hand carve every one of them just like I've done with the tiki in the crate. Cheers, Wendy

L

Wendy I am sure you can tell by now that I love, love, LOVE Tiki Bob...so I am in love with all yours- love the peace sign hippy Bob a lot!

But I can NOT wait to get a finished Bob decanter!! It will be the focal point of my Tiki Bob collection (which includes art by Sam Gambino, MP, Lake Surfer and Grog) and I am looking forward to seeing the completed piece eagerly.

October can't come soon enough!

M

6 SIDES!!! WOW impressive! I wouldn't even know where to begin making a 6 sided mold. (I guess with bubble wrap). I can't wait to see the finished product. Keep up the great work and keep the photos coming we love them!

E

Count me impressed!

S

That's awesome Wendy. Your photos are extremely helpful to anyone new to mug making, like myself :), and it's fantastic that you are showing this to people instead of keeping it all a secret. Whilst we all learn by trial and error, having your posts to guide us through all the different steps is extremely helpful. Keep up the great work.

Bubble Wrap? :o CRAZY!!!!

Great thinking guys, that's gonna be an awesome decanter

Haven't used bubblewrap, but GROG has used newspaper as filler. Looking good Wendy. Good job Dan.

Hi BigToe, ebtiki, Swizzle, MadDogMike and Grog. I love reading your comments.

Mold making has been a huge secret. The joy of having total control of your art from start to finish can't be beat. I was very lucky to have Kingstiedye introduce me to Mike a master mold maker her in our area. With one lesson we have been able to start out on our own. I want everyone who has the desire to be able to learn to make molds and to create and share their art. Anything I come up with I will post here.

I love to watch MauiTiki's thread and now swizzle's. Mold making techniques are to be shared especially among TC'ers.

Hugs for all of you, Wendy

Wendy, your attention to detail on all the steps as you make the beautiful decanter are simply amazing. We are so lucky to have you as our premiere artist in Sacramento...you are special to us all.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!!!

Vamp you make me blush. Thank you for making my day.

The Bobs are in the kiln for their bisque fire. Cheers, Wendy

Those Tiki Bob's look fantastic! Great job

M

WOW Hippie Bob, my daughter would love it. Can't wait to see these glazed. You have so many projects happening at once, I don't know how you do it.

Ooooh now I get it "Bob Marley"!

MauiTiki you gave me an idea. While the kiln is cooling today I got out a painting I started a long time ago and turned it into a Tiki Bob painting. It's a real person and I have a name for the painting. It's called
On The Road With ---------- and Tiki Bob. Guess who it is, the clothes belong to the person and I'm using a photo I took at Oasis this past summer. That's the hint. If it's you don't give it away! Wendy

zerostreet I wish I had your talent for foliage and bark and rocks and ....

Next step arms and hands.

Is it GROG?

M

Hmmm, I don't recognize the shirt or the pendant.

I'm working on the on-line Tiki Bob art show right now.

My Bob's finished the bisque fire just fine.

I coated the bottoms with under glaze.

I wiped it off leaving it in my lettering that was carved into the clay.

I added rickrack to the sombrero and when it was done I coated it with clear glaze.

Worked on Super Carved and South of the Boarder Bob.

Covered them with clear glaze.

Each color is three coats. I've never opened and closed so many jars before.

Shriner Bob, Decanter Bob and Peacenik Bob

The colors will drastically change during the firing process.
Now I'm starting on glazing the Bob bowl today. Soon I'll be able to fire them. If you haven't already check out the Show under Events author Grog.
Cheers, Wendy
