Here is my new Diamond Head mug - with the Hilton Rainbow tower incorporated into it! Thank you Wendy! It will bring back memories of an awesome trip to Oahu and my stay in the tower when I was there! Unfortunately, I need to pack this mug up, as I am in the process of moving to a new house. But once moved, will be displayed proudly with my other Wendy mugs! Sorry about the picture quality . . .

hang10tiki the wedding couple liked them too. Maybe a garden decoration.

TikiAno Eye am better today thank you. See everyone I can soon. I'm going to collect hugs for days.

Danno the mug sure looks better from a distance. The close up shows that I painted with a toothpick! It would be nice if glaze behaved and stayed put. My life would be so much easier. I'm glad I could do this for you.

========================

I was able to cast 20 Tiki Bob's in five days plus two bowls. Now they are lined up waiting to be finished off.

In addition to the three replacement mugs they asked for five more. That worked out well since I wanted to have more items to make firing worthwhile.

Then...

I've made this mug for Arturo on facebook. He asked at just the right time.

Hopefully these will all work out. Cheers, Wendy

All hail Bob

Danno- love that mug

All hail Wendy

hang10tiki thank you and

hang10tiki thank you!

==============================

I'm so glad that my new style of mug is well received. Because guess what I did a HUGE bowl the same way.

I took the HUGE bowl that had been bisque fired and

completely drenched it with water inside and out. This does two things. It starts capillary action to make the glaze stick better but

it also makes just the right amount of crystals stick. Otherwise it would take a whole jar of glaze just for the inside and then in the kiln it would all run down to the bottom.

I used a wet paper towel to wipe off the glaze that got on the outside.

I flipped it over and glazed the bottom

because it looks much nicer when that is done.

The bottom and now the outside of the bowl are done with Duncan CN glaze.

I put it outside between layers.

For this bowl I did four layers of the CN glaze.

Using an underglaze pencil I sketched out tikis all the way around the bowl. This guy is the front of the bowl.

I hope this goes as well as the mugs have gone. Cheers, Wendy

I use underglaze and put it on the greenware to keep from getting teary eyes on Bob. Then, after the bisque fire, glaze the rest of the body and put clear glaze over the already fired underglaze and do your glaze fire.

[ Edited by: GROG 2016-08-05 21:56 ]

GROG so wonderful to see you here. I've never glazed greenware but I plan to try it. The eyes started to run because I glazed and fired the zombie mugs four times. After awhile there was a lot of glaze on them. The glaze that ran that caused me problems was the brown. Horrors. See you at Tiki Oasis?

===========================

The HUGE bowl continues.

With the blue glaze dried overnight it was time to paint the tikis. This took two days with fine tuning.

After the tikis were done and dry I turned the bowl over and did some grass. On the bowl.

This is the front of the bowl. Ready to fire!

Happy Weekend, Wendy

The HUGE bowl is done. I tried the MadDogMike indirect photographic, I tried flash photography, I tried the sun, anyway I could stop the light spots no matter what I did. Bummer.

Here are the best photos. The experiment worked. I will do fogcutter mugs and these HUGE bowls as ordered on the next Wish List #7.

Dan informed me that this bowl is his for all the work he does for me. He placed it on a grass wreath made by Gecko'z South Sea Arts.

I think it would be fun to do a Rat Fink chasing a roadrunner who has stolen a tiki. They could run endlessly around the bowl!!!

These HUGE bowls and smaller bowls along with this style of fogcutter mug will be available on the next Wish List #7.

I hope you all like it, Wendy

The bowl turned out well.

No Tiki Oasis for GROG. GROG will be in Hawaii. Have fun.

The bowl looks great Wendy

No Grog at Oasis, bummer, but Hawaii is a great alternative.
Grog must post photos here so we can all enjoy!!!

Cheers

"GROG so wonderful to see you here. I've never glazed greenware but I plan to try it."

Thanks Wendy. UNDERGLAZE on greenware, not glaze. Check directions on underglaze bottles, they will say which ones can be used on greenware as well as bisque.

Happy Birthday.

Have fun at Oasis with Hang10 :) ---GROG' Substitute.

GROG which island? I will miss my yearly kiss from you!

hang10tiki don't worry we'll stick with the hugs.

hang10tiki (=:

hang10tiki I think I was born at 4 am. So I'm officially 65 and on Medicare. Surprise it's not free.

hang10tiki (=:

hang10tiki I didn't count how many thank yous I owe. I will and I'll give you a hug for each one at Oasis.

GROG I have a pint of black underglaze by AMCO. I'll read if it's ok to use on greenware. It's always fun to hear from you.

===========================

I may or may not take today off for posting. It depends (no I'm not that old) on what Dan has in mind.

Cheers, Wendy

Have a wonderful day....

Big Island and Oahu.

Gotta get to work now. This is my last week on Scooby Doo, and my last day is my deadline, so it's a sprint to the finish. When I get back from Hawaii, I start on a show called Bunnicula.

Happy B-day.

T

Happy Birthday Wendy!!!!! (Sorry I missed it yesterday)!!!!

Hope you guys had a great day.

Grog right, underglaze on greenware works great- though I wonder if that white glaze is too opaque to hide that underglaze? I've used a semi-opaque glazes on top of underglaze and it works great. I normally underglaze bisqued pieces but should work pretty much the same on greenware- right, Grog?

Grog, you will be missed at TO.

T

Happy Birthday to the happiest and most talented person I know! :D

Happy Birthday, Wendy!
Hope you're having / had a great day.

Happy birthday! I'm sure Dan is treating you like a Queen! :)

hang10tiki I did have a wonderful day. My best friend since jr. high joined us for my favorite Chinese buffet. We ate too much then opened a fortune cookie which said: If you didn't get enough to eat ask for another fortune cookie! Back home I carved some clay and had some more fun.

GROG you have a job that really works your talents. That's so great. Wear mosquito repellent. Dingy fever is waiting for you!

TikiAno you didn't miss it, my birthday is today 8/8.

hang10tiki (=:

TikiHula being a part of the tiki world with friends like you just makes me smile all day long.

bamalamalu a great day thank you.

LoriLovesTiki you bet. I started the day by sanding 20 mugs and a bowl and then Dan blew off all the dust so they could fire. Then we played.

===========================

I am so thankful for all the friends I've made here and on Tiki Central. You are all so kind and fun to know. Cheers, Wendy

Morning
How's the Chinese Buffet hangover?
:)

Happy (late) Birthday Wendy!!! I sent your card out this morning

hang10tiki I'm doing really well because I ate a lot of Mandarin orange sections. Dan's ready to go again.

MadDogMike OH NO! I was going to hug you at Oasis for cutting back on your postage bill. Now I have to kick you instead. NOT! I look forward to seeing the picture. Hugs.

============================

I need to figure out what to post and I'll be back later. Wendy

The story of the wedding mugs continues.

I dry them with each end up until they are dry enough to lay on their sides.

They finished drying in the hot garage and

then Dan took them outside and sanded the tops and bottoms for me.

We use mesh to sand because it lasts a very long time.

Now back in the garage I finish by sanding all the sides.

Done and now

they go back outside for Dan to blow off all the dust.

They filled up half of the kiln. I had one more bowl but that's another story. Time to fire.

This time I have extras in case of problems. I also have more lamp/torch Tiki Bob's and that story will come up soon, Wendy

T

Oooohhhhhhhhh (re: kiln being loaded).

Well, glad I was on time then, Wendy, re: Birthday wishes!

Wendy, Happy Birthday! Sorry I missed the actual day, I have been busy and when I am watching Cole, I have no time for internets. Hope you had a great one!

Grog is back on TC! Yay! Have fun in Hawaii. I loved those Bunnicula books when I was a kid, hopefully I can get my kid to watch your new show sometime soon :)

This page looks so weird when all the numbers at the top and bottom are so close together.

Thank you lunavideogames. I'm looking forward to seeing you at Oasis.

My mug (and some cool extras pieces) arrived today from Wendy. Very Happy. I put it on the shelf with some other maori pieces.

Backing up a bit...on the first day I started to make replacement mugs for the wedding I forgot to check how thick my slip was. Too thick. It all stuck in the bottom of the four Tiki Bob's. When that happens I can't save them as mugs so I make more bases for lamps or torches.

So once again I turned the mugs over and dug out the thick messy clay.

I made a patty of clay and

built a top.

I put in a hole at the top and at the bottom back for all the wires etc.

I did a classic Tiki Bob.

I made two of this style and forgot to photograph the second one.

Then one supercarved version.

These will be glazed along with the wedding mugs. I never run out of fun things to do. Thank goodness for Dan.

PS I've had so many eye appointments. Yesterday the doctor found something to cut out of the inside of my eyelid and .... Success not more problem. Thank you all for your well wishes.

EYE am glad you are ok

Yikes, glad they found it and got rid of it!

Mugs are looking great as always :)

hang10tiki still healing so if it looks like I'm winking at you I'll swear I am!

TikiHula thank you. Be proud of me, I changed the Wify security key, added it to Dan's new flat phone and added a Google account so all the apps work.
However I can't figure out how to change the security key so that my printer will be wireless. Even doing the HELP didn't get me to the right place.
So after Oasis it's time for another visit???

=======================

I've been working hard but I'm so tired all I can post is the swap piece I got from ErichTroudt. It's wonderful.

It's not yet hung. He routed the Maori panel into this great piece of art.

I'll post more soon, cheers, Wendy

You got a great swap piece
It looks right at home
:)

hang10tiki it will hang on a wall in the future. But for now it's fun to see right there.

=================================

Hot Tub Hula Girls Phase Four. These were to be done with the next Wish List #7 but I'm slowly doing them now. I should have them shipped before the WL even starts.

I completely wet the mug and let it sit for an hour. Then I pour in the glaze and let it sit for 30 seconds. If I don't wet the mug is will suck up too much glaze and be too thick when fired. Next, I always have problems when it comes to pouring out the glaze.

So this time I sucked up glaze with a turkey baster and when the level was down by half I was able to pour out the rest without it going all over the top half of the girl.

One down.

It took a day of standing in the kitchen but I got all of these glazed on the inside.

A few days later they were taken from the kitchen to the family room so Dan can fix dinner. A home tiki factory has its downside.

Next I used a wet brush to fine tune the line of glaze around the body.

Next I did a couple of layers of the blue glaze around the body to make sure it was thick enough.

Now these dried for a couple of days. Back in the kitchen.

To do the coconut I use a Duncan CY glaze called Iron Ore. I've found that one layer is just right or it runs to the bottom of the coconut. I leave a little square unglazed so I can write the number of the mug in the box. It's good to write this on the jar.

I did all the bottoms and then

they went outside to dry.

The next step is glazing the outside of the coconut.

Then back outside to dry completely.

The next day they are back into the house so I can start the hardest part.

I've found that to make the skin even I must glaze it with Duncan's CN glaze and to do FOUR layers.

It takes me two days to do ONE layer on 30 mugs.

Here they are waiting for the next THREE layers.

I'm going out on a limb here

But

I'm willing to bet that this photo is someone's favorite
Someone by the name of

GROG...

T

Jon said it, not me... :)

hang10tiki and TikiAno I am looking forward to seeing you really soon.

==========================

It's time for the Tiki Oasis 16 Art Show. I started this painting a very long time ago to ensure that it would be done in time. I have also paired the painting with a mug made to look like one of the slit drum tikis. I am using a photo from Disneyland. The painting is called Scared in Disneyland.

I did a sketch of my idea to use as a guide.

I printed photos of tropical plants and picked out paints to match.

I am doing the painting on black velvet. It really helps to have a bright light on the painting so that you can see the first layers of paint.

In front is the mug that goes with the painting. I cut a piece of cardboard to help guide my paint brush as I did the painting. You can't fix errors so anything that prevents them is a good idea. Also it keeps pressure off of the fabric if your hand touches it while painting.

I did the first tiki with the cardboard in place.

I moved the cardboard to the side to work on the top part of the tiki. It is still supporting my hand and protecting the surface.

I finished tiki one and tiki two and

then I worked on tiki three.

The third tiki is done.

Foliage with a flash and

without a flash.

It needed one more touch. Bamboo painted with a brush and a pin.

Done and ready to frame. Photo without a flash.

Here is the matching mug that goes with the painting. Also I found a vintage frame that I thought was perfect.

Here is the painting with a flash.

I don't like putting my name on the front of my paintings so I do it on the back. I included the photo of the old slit drum Disney tikis that I used for my painting.

I knew that having a mug that went with the painting would make a problem of how to keep them together. Then it came to me...fish net.

I wrapped it around the wire picture hanger.

Then I wove it into place with a black chord.

I put a piece of black velvet on the frame to prevent scratching.

Then I pulled the mug over the frame to rest on the black velvet.

This is how it will be displayed at Tiki Oasis 16. The new owner may leave it like this or remove the mug and netting. Thank you hang10tiki for fixing my photo.

Fantastic work Wendy!

Just received my "Tiki Magazine" in da mail

You both are in it

:)

hang10tiki thank you for the fix and compliments. I think I'll go and change out my sideways version with yours.

Danno ahhhhhhh, thanks so much.

cy so funny I have my Frog Island T-shirt on right now! Thank you for the comment and the shirt, it goes on all my vacations.

hang10tiki it's such a thrill to hear that. Feel free to post them and your Tiki Caliente photos. Thank you.

=================================

The photos that hang10tiki mentioned are in the new issue of Tiki Magazine. Since it is out now I feel free to post the photos from the last issue that have my article by Duane Orzol aka Psycho Tiki D and photos by Mike Remmel aka Tiki Hula.

I don't think you can read it here but you can see the photos of my art.

This magazine is so much fun to read. If you are into tiki or midcentury you need a subscription to this magazine. Cheers, Wendy

I've never been a business so I've never had an advertising card. But I thought it would be fun to have my niece make some buttons.

I have brought 100 to Tiki Oasis 16 to hand out. They cost me 40 cents each so only one per person until they are gone. I hope to see many of you soon.

Cheers, Wendy

Tiki Oasis 16 or bust!

We left on Saturday and along the way we hunted for tikis.

In Paso Robles we found this tiki display.

Dan wished he could have bought the Kon Tiki plate.

But Dan didn't leave empty handed. He found two vintage mugs glazed differently from those he had at home.

We drove on to Morrow Bay for the night. At an antique store Dan found a wooden tiki lighter.

We had dinner at the Harbor Hut with a view of the huge rock.

Dan and I split this huge amount of ice cream.

The next day we visited family in Santa Barbara and then drove on to Ventura where Dan found Latour of Hawaii salt and peppers. They look
just like Louie B's.

Then we went to Ventiki. I wanted to see where they hung the chunk lamp that had the tikis on it that I sculpted.

We posed for Tiki Magazine however we just found out from hang10tiki that we made that page. Photos soon.

On Monday we made it to the Crowne Plaza. No elevators this year they assigned us a room on the ground floor. We can see our car out the window!

We have stayed in the room next door in 2014 and Saturday night a band set up and played into the am. Fingers crossed that won't happen again.

Don't forget to ask for a pin if you are at Oasis this year. Cheers, Wendy
