Episode 26 of 5 Minutes of Rum is posted. Rhum Barbancourt 8, Sippin’ Safari, and the Port au Prince cocktail. Shoutout to Hurricane Hayward for mentioning here on TC last week that LH151 was going on hiatus - I got the rare "breaking news" segment on a rum podcast. :)

Kevin, so happy you picked R L Seale for your recipe. I got this bottle as a gift and had no idea what to do with besides drinking it neat.

Cool, yeah it seems like it would be a solid swap for a gold Puerto Rican/Virgin Islands rum when the recipe calls for either a blend of other rums, or you have strong flavors (like cinnamon and allspice) in the recipe. The Seale rum can hold its own in that sort of application.

Episode 30 of 5 Minutes of Rum is posted: Denizen Merchant’s Reserve, revisiting the Mai Tai, and the Taboo Tai Swizzle. Have a listen and grab a bottle of Denizen Merchant's Reserve. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

First off, the show is excellent. I have downloaded all the episodes and am slowly making my way through, listening to some of them multiple times to absorb all the great info. I appreciate the research and history of each rum along with the mixology tips and new and old cocktail recipes. You can come into the show as a newbie or a seasoned vet and get valuable tips.

Regarding the Denizen, I checked at Hi-Times and the Rum buyer said they don't normally carry it. They can special order the white ($20) or the reserve ($28) and have it in a few days. They will not stock it regularly until it gets more popular as shelf space is limited.

SchuTiki,

Thank you for listening, and for the kind words here and on iTunes - I really appreciate it. The reviews on iTunes really help others find the show.

I'm doing my best to make Denizen Merchant's Reserve a permanent fixture on shelves. :) Beverage Warehouse in Marina del Rey has been the most consistent source for me. And if I have to order a case, so be it!

Kevin,

Just listened to #33 and your review of the much-maligned (probably for good reason) Stroh. I could actually hear you wincing when you tasted it neat :>)

I thought I'd point out one more recipe for anyone stuck with a bottle: Von Tiki, a Beachbum Berry original from Grog Log. It's one of the few drinks from that book I've yet to try since I haven't broken down and bought Stroh yet, but it looks to be slightly more palatable than the Five-0 Fireball. It made the Bum's cut to get into Remixed, so it must have some redeeming value.

Okole maluna!

@Hurricane Hayward: yeah, that's not what Stroh is for (in as much as it's "for" anything). Thanks for the reminder on the Von Tiki. I know I've had that drink at least once because I finished the Grog Log at the Tonga Hut, but clearly the cocktail didn't make much of an impression on me.

As mentioned above, episode 33 of 5 Minutes of Rum is posted and features Stroh 80, Frankie’s Tiki Room, Liquid Vacation and the Five-O Fireball. Have a listen and remember that some of this rum and cocktail stuff is supposed to be fun too. Oh and if you're going to play along...buy the small bottle of Stroh (or bring your leftover bottle to Mojave Oasis).

Kevin,

I'll join the chorus of love for 5 Minutes of Rum. I'm thrilled every time I find a new episode has come down the chute.

Mahalo, LitClique. Another episode is slated for 1/19. Get your Agricole ready!

Kevin

Kevin, just wanted to add my voice to the admirers. "5 minutes of rum" is as eagerly anticipated as "Serial" :)

Uh oh, I'd better brace for the inevitable "Serial backlash" then!

Joking aside, that's pretty high praise. Thanks for listening!

Kevin just made your Trader Vic Daiquiri, I used Plantation rum, didn't have yours. Excellent drink, very tasty, great combination of flavors, thank you.

You're welcome hiltiki! I use Plantation 3 Star often in that recipe. I do love that rum.

Episode 37 is now available: Lost Spirits 151 Cuban Inspired Rum, The Bar Book, cocktail accessories, a 151 Swizzle tribute recipe via Hurricane Hayward's Mai-Kai cocktail guide, and the Peligro.

Kevin, thanks for a great thread. I tried both of your latest cocktails, I found the Oro the Los Tontos to be a little too tart for me but enjoyed it nevertheless. I loved your own creation Sol y Sombra, it had very interesting flavor and was refreshing. The combination of Almond Extract and Pernod was very pleasant.

Thank you! The Sol Y Sombra (in the pineapple) is Joe Scialom's recipe (published in Potions of the Caribbean). My original recipe from the episode was the Oro de Los Tontos with the Pernod and almond. A few drops of almond extract (when used sparingly) can really have a positive impact on a cocktail. I picked that up from Beachbum Berry's recipe for the Captain's Grog.

Thanks for listening in; there's more good stuff in the queue!

Kevin

I've been remiss in plugging episode 40 of 5 Minutes of Rum (ok so I was a little pre-occupied preparing the Tiki Caliente 7 rum symposium).

If you're a subscriber, you already know this: episode 40 is posted and available. Hamilton 151 Overproof, Sippin’ Safari, the ’34 Zombie, and the Shockwave.

Good Podcast. I listen when ever they come out. Keep'em coming.

Thank you @mmaurice!

Episode 41 of 5 Minutes of Rum just went live. Scarlet Ibis Trinidad rum, more from the Death & Co book, tools from Cocktail Kingdom, and Death From Above.

http://5minutesofrum.com/episodes/2015/5/31/episode-41-scarlet-ibis

Thanks for listening,

kevin

Kevin, very nice job with this episode. The Death & Co. book is amazing - I pre-ordered it and when it finally arrived posted a message about it here on TC. Truly some great tastes and craftsmanship in that tome.

I found one of the top bars in my part of the country had ordered it about the same time I did, and they had it squirrelled away under the bar with just the bottom edge showing. I asked and found that some of their bartenders were reading it during quiet times. One of the big draws of the book for me was the magnitude of the bartenders reputations at Death & Co. and the similar respect for the quality of their recipes.

Cheers!

M

Good podcast today!

Thanks for the kind words @AceExplorer and @mmaurice (again!).

I can only imagine the quality of the actual Death & Co. bar based on the thoughtfulness that went into their book. It must be amazing and amazingly busy.

As always, I love the show and I'm so grateful you do it.

I love revisiting episodes as my rum collection expands. My wife just picked up a bottle of Smith & Cross for me this weekend (a difficult job within Virginia), so I just had to relisten to that eppie.

My love affair with Smith & Cross continues, though I am using it at a slower pace these days as so many other interesting rums keep showing up in my shopping cart.

Hi, Kevin. I started listening to 5 Minutes of Rum last year, after Tiki Oasis. I really enjoy it! My husband thinks you sound like Barack Obama :D I never noticed it but now I can hear it just a bit.

That's funny - I think any resemblance starts and ends with the fact that we both say "uhh" a lot. :)

Episode 42 of 5 Minutes of Rum is live: Cruzan Black Strap rum, Campari, fresh pineapple juice, and 3 Jungle Birds.

Kevin,

I thought I'd contribute a few more recipes relating to the last couple episodes ...

Here's another Jungle Bird that features Angostura 7 and Martin Cate's molasses syrup:

Good to see you've discovered Jasper's Mix. Great stuff. Here's Jasper's Witch Doctor, plus some additional tips from Stephen Remsberg on how he likes to make the mix ...

Okole maluna!

I just ran across an interesting recipe that employs two of those lesser-used rums on the shelf (Cruzan Black Strap and Wray and Nephew Overproof). It's from one of the competitors in tonight's Iron TikiTender contest ...
http://www.seattleweekly.com/home/959475-129/tip-your-hat-to-the-tiki

More variations! Thanks Jim. I'm intrigued by the possibilities of the molasses syrup. I guess I need another bottle of sweetener in my bar fridge. :)

Once I knock out my TIki Oasis recipes I'm going to need to do another round of Jungle Bird and check out the Co-pilot. I'm sure I'll get to the Witch Doctor sooner than that. In fact, I still have some Jasper's Secret Mix standing by...

Mahalo,

kevin

Looks like I'm a show behind on this thread (in terms of shamelessly plugging my own show). As alluded to in @Hurricane Hayward's post above, episode 43 is available and features Appleton Reserve (new bottle alert), the Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails book (a brief mention), Jasper's Secret Mix, and 2 rum punches.

Episode 44 of 5 Minutes of Rum is live: Lost Spirits Polynesian Inspired Rum, Pimm’s #1, and the Polynesian Cup.

It's worth noting that Lost Spirits is working on new rums that should be available soon, and they continue to work on their aging technology. As such they have no remaining inventory of their Navy, Polynesian, or Cuban Inspired 151 rums. If you enjoy any of these Lost Spirits rums and see them in the wild, you'll want to pick them up.
