We all reach for pumpkins on instinct when we want to carve a jack-o’-lantern, but why? Hailing from the Emerald Isles, Jack-o’-lanterns were traditionally carved from turnips and rutabaga. It wasn’t until large migrations to America that pumpkins replaced these bitter tubers.

If you want to know why we started carving jack-o’-lanterns in the first place, check out the Legend of Stingy Jack.

With crisscrossed skin, a wild hairdo, and a filling you won’t have to bake to be edible, pineapples seem like the stuffy pumpkin’s fun brother.

If you make a pineapple jack-o’-lantern, you get a fresh aromatic take on Halloween that won’t rot into itself by the big night (and maybe even give you a head start on some piña coladas).

An experienced palate might be able to appreciate the pumpkins sweeter tones, but on the candy-crazed sugar rush that is Halloween, a fruit sweeter than a gourd seems more appropriate.

As pineapples make a comeback as decorations you may want to know that they were actually super expensive curiosities at one time.

In the 16th-18th-centuries, pineapples were an incredibly exotic item. Getting a whole pineapple back to Europe intact was a nearly impossible feat, only affordable to aristocrats and royalty. A single pineapple could cost today’s equivalent of $10,000.

Lavish parties would pay to rent a pineapple by the hour in order to impress guests.

Pineapples were so rare that people didn’t usually know how to eat them. King Louis XIV, for example, severely cut his lips because he tried to eat a pineapple without peeling it.

Here is some Halloween, Our neighborhood is small and the houses far apart so we have Trick or Treat on our own day.
Would give out candy on the regular day as well but no kids come, two in 17 years.

I tried to replicate the Halloween nut cups that you would see at kids party in the 1920s.
Would use the real ones from the 1920s but they sell for $30.00 to $50.00 bucks for one paper cup on eBay.

I think mine were thrown away.

These are the nut cups I made, the first ones are replicas of an old 1920s style.
They would come in books that you would punch out the pattern and put them together yourself.

Those books full are very costly if you can find them.

Well it's over.

Wanted to put this here lest we forget.

Much like other old traditions in the ol USA, Halloween in 2017 was under attack.
You were warned not to wear offensive costumes like Moana unless you were actually Polynesian.

Posters were made for tips on what not to wear.
Being a fat white stupid father named Homer Simpson was not on that list.

Some Schools did away with any celebrations of Halloween as it may offend some students.
Remember the Parade around the school in your costume, I loved that because we could get out of that building and go outside.

As far as décor around our town I did not see that much really, hope that changes.

We don't have a ton of traditions or customs like some other country's here in America but I look at Halloween as one of those things that are an American tradition, kinda silly I know but doesn't the silly stuff make the hard Day to day life bit better?

I feel so sad for kids at our local elementary school, who no longer know the joys of marching around the grounds in their costume for an afternoon. Supposedly they cancelled the annual costume parade because "some families can't afford expensive costumes!" Well you know what? I took a dang potato chip bucket, covered it in tinfoil, stuck it on my head, called myself a robot, and was thrilled with it. The kids don't see it as a competition for the most expensive costume, that crap is between the parents. Leave the kids to their fun, and hooray for October!

I loved the Halloween costume parade at our school!
Once I was a vampire that took some work, but other times I whipped out the quickie Hobo that would be homeless person today and be bad for shaming the homeless.
And all I thought I was doing was pulling off a fast cheep outfit.

Then there was Charlie Brown you could do that one with just a old sheet and a bunch of holes cut in it, add bag with rock and you are done.

Kids don't make their outfits that I see these days, It's too bad it's really fun to get creative with Halloween.

Man they are even tearing down my old school and building some new grand expensive school.
Our old school has a lot of charm and memories, it's sad.

We have had two trick-or-treaters in 17 years since we have been here.
And they were just waiting for their mom to come out and drive them elsewhere.

Now in the last three years we have had twelve kids on a night before trick-or-treat night that is a night our neighborhood has its own trick-or-treat night and a neighborhood party.

It is great.

And on the school not having a Halloween costume parade at school it may have more to do with the many different people we now have in our schools and the fact that their customs or culture does not allow them to do things like Halloween or dress up.

I was at a thrift store buying Halloween stuff and the girl at the counter asked if I was having a party, I then asked her if she was going to dress up for Halloween and she said,
that "her culture does not allow them to do things like Halloween or dress up"

So it may be easier to tell you it's because of the poor people than to open a can of worms like that.

Odd how we are not supposed to offend or keep people from their culture and customs while our culture and customs get berated everyday more and more.

Glad I don't have a kid I would be at that school fighting all the BS they put our kids through daily.

Curious. We've got a broad mix here and Halloween's big. Obviously with the Latino population Dia de los Muertos is everywhere. Our Korean exchange student last year said Halloween is mostly unknown in Asia (makes sense, considering the Irish/European origins) but found it silly fun. The modest Indian/Pakistani population seems to get into it as well. The only "culture" I've ever run into that doesn't participate in Halloween are the ultra-conservative Christian denominations that argue we're going to Hell for "glorifying the devil." They sponsor wholesome, religious-themed "Fall Festivals" to save souls from the perils of trick-or-treating. We always opt for the Catholic school's Halloween Carnival instead, because they've totally got that spook house thing down.

This how I feel mostly.
It's fun for all who want to participate.

Thought back and my family always decorated for the holidays even the restaurants.
But then I remembered I was the one who decorated the outside of our house mostly.
And handed out candy.

For me Halloween is an American custom or tradition if you will.
Hate to see it fade away from as big a deal as it was.

Halloween is a opportunity to be creative decorate and make for a different day and maybe even something fun and special.

I try to go overboard so the twelve or so kids in our neighborhood will maybe someday also decorate and celebrate Halloween when they are older, and remember that nut that used to put all the blow molds and candy pails in his yard.

Precisely. Someone has to shoulder the responsibility of building the spectacle that will inspire the next generation of haunters. My favorite moments are when some 5-year old notices that the bench full of pumpkins is "singing" to them and just stands there, slack-jawed while their parents try to nudge them along the sidewalk. To them, it's magic.

Skip, I love how you go all out for Halloween. Love the vintage stuff the best. New decorations suck. I have only one thing up this year as I’ll be hiking in Tennessee for the holiday. The witch is vintage and over four feet tall. Have a good Halloween!

It's getting harder to put all that stuff up and my wife ends up doing a lot of it, may be time to dial it back a bit.

Not seeing much Halloween décor this out year.

I wonder if over time the old stuff people like now and cost lots to buy will ever become not so sought after and the newer stuff that I don't care for become the "rare item" for sale on eBay.
We do see this in the tiki mug collecting now some.

And my parents used to collect Satin glass and cranberry glass and heck they sell for less than one of those Yosemite Sam gas station glasses these days.

Heck the blow molds we put out now have gotten kinda high priced so we really should not be messing them up by putting them out in the elements but I want the kids to see these things and grow up with them so at least these kids are exposed to the "good stuff"

And we don't it all for others we like seeing the décor when we come home too.
It's over the top and too much, plus cheesy, but that is the goal.

Last year's modest attempt.

Hints for Pumkin Carvers. If you insist on carving a very wide mouth on your Jack, be aware that in only a few hours your pumpkin will collapse on that side due to the weight of the upper part not being supported. Better to leave two vampire-like teeth from top to bottom of the mouth to act as little pillars. The mouth will still be visually wide but is actually carved as three smaller openings and your pumpkin will last much longer. Smearing all the cut edges with a little Vaseline also gives Jack a much longer life!

And good pumpkin tips, we used to put our carved pumpkins in ice water after lighting them all day at the restaurant and then put them in the walk-in cooler.

But then that was when I had huge pots and a walk-in cooler.

It worked really well as having them out lit for hours really made them fade fast.
