Ports of Paradise - a weekly exotica broadcast from Melbourne, Australia

Pages: 1 2 3 116 replies

Hey Mid-Century Music Lovers,

I present a weekly broadcast from Australia's finest community radio station (PBS FM)!

I describe my program "Ports of Paradise" as a midcentury melting pot of sophisticated sounds from the golden age of exotica ... including jungle jazz, tribal percussion, Latin rhythms, early Calypso, cocktail lounge, stereophonic showpieces, space-age symphonies, and tropical island swing.

If you'd like to check it out, there are playlists and a program archive at the following location:

http://www.pbsfm.org.au/portsofparadise

The above page also includes a link to my Facebook page, if you'd like to receive reminders for future broadcasts.

If you can figure out the time difference to your location, you could also stream live from the PBS website. My program broadcasts every Friday morning from 9-11am (AEST) in Melbourne, Australia.

PBS has heaps of other great programs you can investigate too.

Mahalo and I hope you enjoy!

Paddy

FM

I'll be sure to check it out when I get home from work. Here in Southern California, 106.7 FM is the radio station KROQ, a pretty iconic one at that.

The main theme for the latest broadcast is Space Travel and you can listen to it here http://pbsfm.org.au/node/45411.

The program also includes 30 minutes of vintage calypso, some bebop and beat jazz, plus all sorts of other mid-century obscurities.

Enjoy!

Halfway through it. Good stuff!

Thank you! Each broadcast includes four hours of music, so I like to hop between different genres ... mainly based around themes of exotic mid-century jazz.

Halfway through it. Good stuff!

The latest broadcast includes exotic sounds from Spain, a Calypsonian bed bug special, some moody latin jazz, a range of traditional Hawaiian music and Buddy Collette's strangely surreal Polynesian Suite.

Here's the audio archive link http://pbsfm.org.au/node/45776 and thanks to those who streamed the program "live" from the other side of the planet!

Just as the witch doctor ordered ... moonlight magic and monkey mayhem now available at http://pbsfm.org.au/node/46222

Is there any way that these can be downloaded and listened to on a different device? I don't have access to streaming at my workplace and I just don't have the time at home to listen to them.

Unfortunately not. According to our radio station policy, this could be regarded as distribution of music and a potential breach of copyright???

Hey portsofparadise. Just wanted to send thanks for the show. My husband and I have been listening to the archives in the evening, and really enjoying it! :)

Thanks for your feedback, KonaKaiBaby - I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed the broadcast.

Good luck with your tiki lounge project. We have some pretty cool tiki themed bars here in Melbourne, but nothing "original" from the 1950s/60s unfortunately!

How did I miss this?

Some great programs on PBS already, Soul, R&B and Rockin Doo Wop,

What local time, Swami of the Smooth? I'll lift the fang on the tone arm cobra and swing the dial on the Stromberg Carlson your way!

I like your turn of phrase, Vonratnick ... and it's great to hear from a discerning PBS listener!

In addition to my Kreisler Multisonic Stereogram, I also have a Stromberg Carlson unit.

My next broadcast is from 2am on Thursday 30th (Melbourne time) ... I look forward to your company!

The audio archive and playlist for the "Exciting Drums of Bora Bora" are now available at http://pbsfm.org.au/node/47042.

Happy listening!

Audio archive and playlist for "The Secret of the Snake Charmer" are now available at http://pbsfm.org.au/node/47295

Please note that Ports of Paradise now broadcasts weekly: 9-11am (AEST) every Friday morning.

Thank you, Paddy! A few weeks ago I started listening to the archive from the beginning of the program's run and am really looking forward to the remaining year's worth of shows. You're introducing me to a lot of artists I wasn't aware of before and I love the detours into jazz. Fine work-- thanks again!

Hi Bumboo,

I really appreciate that you are taking the time to work back through the archive. Ports of Paradise is a fairly diverse program and it's interesting for me to learn what different listeners get out of it. As you may know, the first 10 months were broadcast from a "graveyard" timeslot. I really enjoyed that experience, but my recent promotion to 9am on Friday mornings is even better!

Regards, Paddy

Howdy Folks! The audio archive and playlist for "Percussion Orientale" are now available at http://pbsfm.org.au/node/47703

Audio archive and playlist for "Hold Them Between the Legs" are now available at http://pbsfm.org.au/node/48136.

Have a great weekend!

What do they do in Peru?

You can find the answer during this week's special segment on Yma Sumac at http://pbsfm.org.au/node/48335

Here's a link to the audio archive and playlist for the latest broadcast "These Foolish Things" http://pbsfm.org.au/node/48953 together with my album cover of the week.

In Melbourne, we have been enjoying a public holiday for a football game and next month we have another for a horse race ... strange but true!

To brighten your weekend, here's some mid-century art and a link to the latest episode "The Cooks of Trinidad" http://pbsfm.org.au/node/49391

EDIT: AUDIO ARCHIVE FOR THIS EPISODE SEEMS TO BE OUT OF ACTION AND ADMIN STAFF AT PBS106.7FM DON'T WORK OVER THE WEEKEND. I'LL POST HERE WHEN IT'S RUNNING AGAIN ... IN THE MEANTIME, YOU CAN ALWAYS LISTEN TO ONE OF THE EARLIER EPISODES!

The audio archive and playlist are now available for this week's truly frightening "Halloween" edition http://pbsfm.org.au/node/49830 ... but please don't listen to it late at night!

Last week's "Hong Kong" inspired show is here http://pbsfm.org.au/node/49621

And if you missed the "Cooks of Trinidad" program 2 weeks ago, the problem with the audio archive has been fixed ... but you do seem to have to wait longer than usual for it to load (around 5 minutes) http://pbsfm.org.au/node/49391

[ Edited by: portsofparadise 2015-10-30 07:07 ]

This week's program includes part one of my interview with the legendary Jack Costanzo - who introduced the bongos to American jazz in the late 1940s and brought them to enormous popularity during the 1950s.

I'll be sending a copy of my band's most recent CD to you, called Island Dreams.

Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for a great selection of songs, I enjoyed the entire thing.

You're welcome Hiltiki and it's fun to know there's someone tuning into the program from Reseda (which I recall was mentioned in a Tom Petty song)!

Catching up on old episodes this Xmas morning!

Happy New Year, Tiki Centralites!

Here's a link to the latest broadcast, which was (mostly) pretty mellow to help any listeners suffering from the night before

I better dig this. I was listening to a 78 of Jazzbeaux Collins doing 'Jack and the Beanstalk' just yesterday....

During this week's broadcast - we embarked on an East African safari before resting up in a latin lounge, enjoyed a magic carpet ride followed by some sultry swing, then finished up with a selection of midcentury jazz in the Ports of Paradise bongo lounge. Phew!

http://pbsfm.org.au/node/53052

This week we started the program with a love dance from far-off Siam, a Japanese rumba, a tropical heat wave and some Cuban fire.

Here's the audio archive and playlist: http://pbsfm.org.au/node/53492

Hey Centralites,

The audio archive and playlist are now available for "Pan Rhapsody" http://pbsfm.org.au/node/53938 with a special live performance from Harmonicis Steelband

If you'd like to receive weekly Facebook updates including reminders for each broadcast, then please follow https://www.facebook.com/portsofparadise/

The audio archive and playlist are now available for "Oh, Lady Be Good" http://pbsfm.org.au/node/54320 and there's a little bit of everything that you like ... classic exotica, latin lounge, sultry swing, primitive percussion, happy Hapa Haole (try saying that after a couple of cocktails :) :))

During this week's program we found a sheltered cove and dropped anchor in Mombasa, Tokyo, Maui, Mexico City, New York, London and Trinidad.

We also said "Happy Birthday" to the wonderful composer and arranger Henry Mancini.

Here's a link to the audio archive and playlist http://pbsfm.org.au/node/54742

On Friday, we celebrated the birthday of the grandfather of jungle jazz, enjoyed some sweet sounds from Sid Ramin, a Hula Chant from Lani McIntire and an Organ Spectacular from Jack Malmsten.

Here's a link to the audio archive and playlist: http://pbsfm.org.au/node/55174

Great show, many thanks.

Thanks for all the great LP covers too. :)

This week's show kicked off with a tribal incantation from Richard Hayman, then cruised through a range of percussive lounge, early and mid-century swing, followed by an interview with local jazz vocalist Hetty Kate. Then we rounded out the program with some Hawaiian guitar and Caribbean calypso.

The next two weeks will focus on our annual PBS Radio Festival. This is the time of year we ask listeners to become members of our uniquely independent community radio station, so we can continue to operate for the next 12 months.

If you like Ports of Paradise, then please signup online at http://www.pbsfm.org.au/node/54973

I look forward to thanking each of you personally during the broadcast!

Loving this! I just wish I could go back further into the archives.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jeff, I'm pleased to hear you are enjoying the program :D

The PBS audio archive used to go back around five years, but they recently trimmed it to 6 months to save costs :(

Apparently, most people only go back a month or so into the archive.
