Seasons of Tiki Art Swap - DONE!!! Swap results page 23

Pages: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 399 replies

The blizzard that hit the east coast this weekend allowed me to focus on my swap project! I'm all done and my pieces are drying. I'm a little concerned that the tiles aren't tiki enough but I have some ideas for putting it all together that I hope will make up for that. Fingers crossed. I need to take pictures of my tiles so I can share. I'm jealous of those of you who are enjoying non-freezing temperatures! We got over 2 feet of snow this weekend and the piles will be around for a while. No school for me today, so that was a good thing.

Sorry about the snow Lori (though it sounds like a hidden blessing), it was in the 70s here today  Remember me when it's 120 this summer

Can't wait to see your pics, I'm sure you will sufficiently "tiki it up"

Schools have a delayed opening tomorrow but that won't make these puppies dry any faster. They measure 4" x 5.25" approximately. I'm thinking about mounting them on plywood covered with burlap with possibly a bamboo frame.
Here's Spring & Fall

And Summer & Winter.

Edited to add these blurry, crappy cell phone pictures. I need a new phone!

There's a Tiki on each one, how could they not be "Tiki enough"
Looking good Lori!

Oh, and I'm REALLY worried about glazing them!

Try some underglaze on them Lori. It doesn't spread out and make a mess between the colors. I like the Amaco Velvets and the Duncan CoverCoats. When you're done you'll need to put a clear over them. Let me know if you have questions

Thanks Mike! I don't want to buy a bunch of colors so I'm going to check out what we've got at school. I know there are some underglazes there. I originally thought I'd just glaze them each a single different colors but I won't be able to "settle" for that, I have to glaze them in many colors, lol.

Cy- lookin good my man
Lori- I like what you are doing out there in the snow :tiki:

Hope to do more on mine tomorrow
Darn work always getting in the way of fun

I've missed a few of the more recent swaps. Well I'm in this one. Here's what I've got started...

WOW!!! So cool Tom!

Mike, hang, CY, Lori, Aloha and all the rest you are making this one fun swap. Wendy

Great start and idea Lori, Aloha that is beautiful!

great carve Aloha!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. But Wow you guys have been busy
Wendy's done hang 10 looking good
Everyone is moving along and I have been slacking.
But I finally nailed down an idea I like
so here is the sketch on the board.

I call it summer in the sun enamel on canvas board

I'm not sure if I want to use black to outline or not what do y'all think.
Mahalo

Looks good Anthony. I think a black outline would good but maybe you can add it digitally to see what it looks like?

Aloha- dude that's awesome
Anthony- lookin sweet Bruddah

You guys are on fire

Little more detail today and lots of sanding
Photo doesn't show much difference so I'll post pic soon after stain

Stain done

Next will be the gloss poly coat

Then I'll explain how this fits in the "Seasons of Tiki" theme
:)

Aloha, beautiful carve.

Anthony, beautiful, can't wait to see more.

Hang10, killer. Send to SD.

Got a nice antique look H10T

Anthoney that's really interesting.
Lori you tiles are adorable.
hang10 I love how when you carved deeply you hit the darker wood.

Great swaps ahead, Wendy

T

Mug came out of the kiln, so I glazed it today.

First the underglaze:

Then another color on top of it (which will burn away as it fires to cone 5):

SWEET!!! Way ahead of me TikiAno

Ano / Mad Man / Wendy- thanks, glad u all approve

Ano- lookin good bruddah

Mad Mad- get to work :)

Tiki Ano, I am so interested in seeing how that turns out. It looked great before the last glaze was added. If it all burns off at cone 5 why did you put it on? Wendy

T

Sorry Wendy, it's another (semi-opaque) glaze on top of the underglaze. The brown underglaze will (hopefully) be visible through the Aqua glaze. The clay body is Laguna B Mix, which is pretty white- I haven't worked with it for a while so excited to see how the Aqua turns out.

It won't "burn away," poor use of words on my part! I did build another mug with same underglaze with a clear gloss glaze, am curious to see how that one turns out. Our studio has one kiln working now, so don't think they'll be glaze fired for another week.

Mike, can't wait to see your creation being created.

OK, I kind of thought that's what you meant. Good! Wendy

T

hey guys! is it too late to jump in? there are some awesome projects going on in here, I'd love to be a part of it (that is if i can finish). Do i have it right that projects have to be finished and posted by the end of Feb?

tikiAnno - love that stone look on your mug!

TheBigT you have a whole month to make your art. Welcome. Just be ready to ship when MadDogMike draws the names. Cheers, Wendy

Wendy is right BigT. Jump in anytime you want as long as you're done and a picture posted by Feb 29th. I don't see your name in my database of previous swappers so I will get some additional contact info from you before the end of the Swap. Welcome aboard matey!

anthonymaye I still do not understand how you fill in THEN add outline but it looks great so far! H10 that is an outstanding piece bro! TA the glaze really made the deeper portions stand out, awesome! Big T jump on in and represent the Texas Mafia!

Cy- thanks Bruddah

BigT in da house

:)

T

thanks all! you guys are already rocking the place with your pieces!

i came up with a couple of ideas. I don't have the sketch for this handy so here's progress pic of what i have so far. it's a wall hanging with a little ku dude worshiping the sun (or maybe the return of the sun). he's a smidge rough right now and my wife says the sun looks like a star... doh!

so if he doesn't work out as a sun worshiper I'll call it a christmas piece and he's worshiping the star over the new baby jesus! :)

anyhow's if i get time, i'll do the 2nd idea i had and see which one comes out best!

BigT- wow, lookin good, me like...

You wood chippers work hard. Clay is so much easier. Great start there BigT. Wendy

Nice star(t) there BigT!

T

Looks great to me, TheBigT.

Yes, that rhyme was intentional.

This is getting good....

Doing some research on the Seasons of Tiki

LOL, I was trying to look studious! (Is that how you spell it? The root word is "study" not "stud" )

Wait a minute - is there gonna be a test?

Didn't want to carve "Rudolph the red nosed Moai"
Or "Here comes Santa Ku"
Or even "Frosty the Easter Island Bird Man"

So...
Outside the box...
Way outside the seasons box...

Seasons
Season
Seasonings
Salt n Pepper

Ok

Got it

Tiki Farms Salt n Pepper "Marq" was my inspiration

Hope is acceptable

And yes, my swap partner gets the SnP too :)
