"I also like Skip's theme allows for quite a bit of interpretation, so I'm all for that, too."

Could make for a more "sophisticated" art swap.

The clock is ticking. MadDogMike where do we stand? Wendy

Last chance tiki. Next rum 100 miles...

OK, Swap theme is set for 100 Years of Stephen Crane, hope you like it! Art inspired by this Tiki Pioneer and his restaurants. I think this theme is traditional enough to satisfy the traditionalists and broad enough for everyone to find inspiration in any media.

Could find inspiration in a post card

(Beverly Hills Luau)

(Kon Tiki Cincinnati)

A carving

A matchbook cover

A mug

Or maybe tiki art that includes Stephen Crane's wife Lana Turner?

Here's some interesting speculation - looks like San Diego's Humphrey's Half Moon Inn was originally scheduled to get a Stephen Crane Ports o' Call which didn't happen for some reason. How about a "should-a-been" mug from the Shelter Island Port's o Call?

Speaking of San Diego, Stephen Crane, and Tiki Oasis - I understand some of the Beverly Hills Luau Tikis went to the Hanalai Hotel, now the Red Lion Inn and home to Tiki Oasis. I wonder if any of the remaining tikis there are from the Luau?

MadDogMike thank you for the shouldhavebeen idea, that makes it extra fun for me. Getting to work rightaway. Wendy

Here we go

Have to get this ready

Nice wood you got there.

:D

And he's off!

:)

T

All right, Grog's in!

More on Crane (a very interesting character). There's also a great background on him in the new Martin Cate book (also in Sven's books).

I'll start working on some ideas... look forward to this one. (Much better theme than Disney). :)

ano- u need to make a crane piece and a Disney piece for your swap partner
:)

T

Jon, I will make a Crane piece to send to you (aren't we swapping??) sans Disney.

I found this on Yelp of all places. Now to work this idea into a painting

Love the lighting on that Tiki!

Ano- :)
Tu- can't wait to see what u do

Here are some threads dedicated to Stephen Crane's restaurants, lots of pics for inspiration

Beverly Hill Luau
San Pedro Ports O' Call
Toronto Ports O' Call
Dallas Ports O' Call
Waikiki Kon Tiki
Cincinnati Kon Tiki
Montreal Kon Tiki
Boston Kon Tiki
Chicago Kon Tiki
Some info on Stephen Crane

Just to avoid any confusion, the Tucson Kon Tiki is NOT a Stephen Crane restaurant.

MadDogMike no wonder we love you to run these swaps. Those are wonderful references. Thank you, Wendy

Thank you Mike, I was doing some searches on my own today and these really help. I wish I had been on this board in the earlier years. So much to see.

Z

Gonna be fun!

Go zero go

"A young woman raised by gypsies hides a deadly secret which she will do anything to protect." - 1944 (IMDb)

And we've got a second start! I had forgotten that Stephen Crane had tried his hand at acting before becoming a restaurateur. "Crane starred in three films, Cry of the Werewolf, The Crime Doctor's Courage, and Tonight and Every Night" (IMDb)

Not much to see... but extruded three cylinders... added bottoms and one of these will be a mug for this Swap....?!?!?!? The pic was taken on Friday, still drying out before trimming and will then be able to start on it.

Ano- good start
you mean 2 mugs for the swap?

  1. SC theme
  2. Disney mug

:)

Good point Jon, here it is

Love the progress shot guys, looks like we have at least 3 projects started!

T

Go go go!

I might start from scratch with a different form since those three mug bases, still sketching out options.

Jon, I'll sharpie on some mouse ears on it if/ when I send to Vegas.

And a copy of "Team Rodent," still recommended- get from your local library.

Is it too late to join in? this would be my first time. :)

It is not too late until names are being drawn at the very end!

And similarly, no need to commit until then. (I'm still pondering ideas. Probably won't start for a few more weeks.)

Z

let's get some colors strewn about.

...Someday I'll get it right. Stay tuned for furthur developments
~Z.

Dawn- alright

Zero- I'll turn em for ya

Hiltiki- alright

JoBell- alright

Great starts Zero and H10!

T

Nice!

Zero, I look forward to seeing more- and seeing which way the pics post, too!

Jon, killer.

I'm glad more and more people are jumping in!

Z

More flipped foto goodness!

T

Zero, looks great. I was hoping for that angle!

Got back to the studio today. Trimmed up a cylinder and drew some lines on it...

Cut out another piece, placed it on to get sizing... more drawing...

Added some clay arms and legs, attached the head piece after carving some lines...

It's now propped up on its side wrapped in plastic to dry out slowly. Will post the inspiration soon, just making sure it survives the drying. One overhanging piece can make some trouble. More carving to come.

It seems to be a file format bug. This happened with my old camera and my new phone.

Now I rotate the image in photo program, then copy paste it into a new document, then save it.

Aloha

iPhone:
Open pic
Rotate twice, save
Rotate twice more so in original orientation
Save
Done

Or just only take sideways pics
Only happens to up n down pics

Zero- sweet
Ano- salt n pepper inspiration? Lookin good

Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!
