Go Jon go! This is going to look really good... in San Diego!

Got back to the studio, a little more scratching. To recap, I was inspired by the artwork used on the Luau La Jolla matchbook and print ads... (the pic to the right). I had no idea that "Su Casa," a Mexican restaurant that is in the same building as the Luau, has been there for years, and I've been quite a number of times. I have to go back to hunt for anything left from the old days of the Luau...

Rear (w/ buttocks included at no extra charge):

This is now going to dry out, then get bisque fired. My plan is to have it look similar to the original artwork when finished. Fingers crossed.

Cute butt Ano!!!

That looks just like Dan's! This is one of your best mugs Tiki Ano. Wendy

Thanks guys

Ano- dude that's kool

Mike- wait, anos butt or his sculptures butt?
:)

Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!

You guys are all way ahead of me, have no idea what I am going to do, and not too confident my piece is going to be up to par.... but I will try my best. :)

Jon does it just lay on the sawhorse like that? It doesn't have to be strapped down?

Yup
I keep a couple of towels on there,
it helps it from moving to much.
Plus when holding the chisel with my left hand,
I push down on the Tiki with that hand.
That helps some too.

I don't like to strap them on it because
I move it around so much it's more of a hassle.

It does move a little though.

Keeps me on my toes
:)

Funny when I saw you post the picture,
I thought the comment was going to be about the
sawhorse sitting on a nightstand

:)

LOL, I couldn't tell what that was

Z

My tiki isn't flipped... he's sleepin'.

Mike, I'm married!!!

And I modeled the tush after Dan's, of course. Wendy, thanks so much- though there's still plenty of time to mess it up! I did utilize your letter-tracing technique for "The Luau," and this time it worked! (I've tried this on other pieces, with lesser results. I think the clay was at the perfect dryness level for etching. Thanks for all of the lessons from your posts!

Jon, looks good. Checking in on everyone's posts makes me tired, since they're all lying down....

Okay, out!

:)

Lookin good Zero
Ano- letters are great

Lil more

ZeroTiki and it looks like he is having one heck of a dream! You are so good at doing these paintings. I'm so glad we have ours.

TikiAno I knew it! I just posted another tracing mug.

Zero, H10, Ano, great starts and motivation for the rest of us, great to see others interested in participating! My idea is in my cabeza, I received some research help from Sven Jr. (H10), and will post the sketch when I get to it.

I am really impressed by the work shown so far - the bar is pretty high this time!
Wendy - I am honored that you and Dan have a piece of mine in your beautiful home - a couple of them at his point, I think... How's Captain Hornbill?

I just got back from a few days in Las Vegas, and I think that has begun to spill onto my neon friend, here...

Great work guys!!! I think I have a plan now - I want to make a mug based on this Montreal Kon Tiki entrance

MadDogMike, a guy on the Wish List asked me to make that same mug, actually two of them and two of Chin Tiki. Wow how amazing. Anyway if he sees yours you'll have to swear I didn't tell you. However I have declined to make his mugs this time around. I'm looking forward to seeing how close yours will look to what I had in mind. So fun, Wendy

Everything is looking so great! This is shaping up to be a killer swap!

Mike: I LOVE the entrance to the Montreal Kon Tiki... saw it as well when I was doing a little research. Excited to see how your mug turns out, brother.

I've worked up a few ideas for my piece... time to narrow it down.

Have a great Easter weekend everyone!

grace+peace,
Jason

Thanks all
Lots to go still

Zero- flip that awesome painting :)
Mike- can't wait to see how you make a 24 foot mug :)

sigh... All right, all right...

Great job so far, everybody!

So far this is what I have.

GO HILDA!!!!!

This is a wonderful swap. Everyone is so enthusiastic and it shows up in the art.

I decided to use the green matchbook cover as my inspiration.

I've got it started. I think you can see where I'm going with this coconut!

We are all having so much fun, Wendy

The first step in supplies for the project.

A lost art brought back for a tiki project, cool. I used to do those in the late 60's.

Zero- :) Sweet lookin
Hilda- welcome, can't wait to see where you go with this
Wendy- I think we all know what you are up to :) awesome
Mauka- interesting, I have no idea what you are up to but can't wait

Wow Wendy, you are takin' care of business!

MaukaHale, I think linocut would be perfect for tapa cloth

Ok
Time to show my inspiration piece
Lil more today

hang10tiki what are you using to make the black lines? Wendy

Dremel bit
Burns it if ya go slow

hang10tiki what a wonderful way to burn wood. You have a very steady hand!

====================================

I finished off the sculpting of the Summer Swap mug. I post it here and there.

There are a lot of different ways to do the lettering. It can be carved into the clay or it can stand out. I used to try to form each letter and stick them on. Now I put on a slab of clay and out line the letter then carve off the clay around each letter. This works really well.

All done and posing. Now it will dry very slowly over a month before firing the first time.

Clay is so much fun.

Wendy

Wendy,

When you put your mind to something you Git-R-Done.

I saw Wendy's project on facebook so I thought I'd check this thread. You people have been BUSY! I'm liking what Ive seen so far!

Me? I've been painting and tiling at the beach house so I haven't had any time to do research, thank goodness you have done it for me. Now to get inspired....

T

Go go go!

Mike, great idea, can't wait to see what you come up with. Then we can keep track of Wendy "borrowing" your idea later on as "inspiration." Ha!

Man, this is going to be a goooood swap.

Z

Wendy, H10, Ano... you guys're ROCKING it! This is gonna be EPIC!
So, I have finished up this bit of the swap... and he has a surprise for his new owner. You'll see.

I know that you are thinking, "what is that crazy guy saying - 'this bit of the swap'?". Well, lemme tell ya...
We are going multipiece this swap! Some happy Ohana will be getting a mixed bag of Zero goodies!

My second piece, in progress. Close cover before striking.

I am curious... Is the Harbor hut a Crane establishment as well? I used to live in Morro Bay, and if that place fits, I might add it in as a 3rd design.

Or, I might just add it in anyways. I DO want to add an abstraction in as well... someone's gettin' a packed box this year!

As Always,
~Z.

Zero, I don't find any evidence that The Harbor Hut was a Crane restaurant. I suspect that the cannibal graphic was "borrowed" from Crane. There is/was a cannibal Tiki at The Harbor Hut too, I don't know if it was a replica or an original from one of the Crane restaurants. Let me drop Dusty Cajun a note and see if he has any more info.

Wendy- someone's fast, love dat Krazy coconut
Lori- take a house break n show us some art
Zero- done already? Lightening speed. Looks killer
And now a matchbook painting, daaaaaaaang

Don't know if you saw Wendy's post
She's on a lil wrist recovery
See her post area
Need a little help from all you tiki peps who own Wendy mugs
While she's letting her wrist heal up
If you have a Wendy mug or bowl,
And get thirsty,
Make a drink,
Pour it in your Wendy drinking vessel,
Snap a pic,
Post it in the Wendy area,
Enjoy your drink,
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat
:)
Cheers

Jon

Zero, hang10, and Wendy looking good crazy already.
I picked the bird bowl for my inspiration mostly because
of its nick name The Hypnotic chicken so
I named my painting The Hypno Chicken

So I think I'm about at the half way point on the painting
it's starting to look like something.
Mahalo and keep up the great work everyone

Z

Wendy - many hugs your way. SO many.
Next step is underway for my match Heads:

Ah, progress. The floor of my Huki Hut is almost level as well... well, as level as it ever shall get, anyway:

Pounding rock into mud without tools is hard. Time for a :drink:

As always,
~Zero

Anthony, looks great. I had no doubt that you would be joining us :D
Zero, cool! Looks like the hut is doing coming along too

Anthony- hypno is sweeeeet bruddah

Go zero go
