TikiAno and Hang10, AWESOME!!!!!

CY has a finished Swap project for us but is unable to post here on TC yet. Looks great CY, glad to have you on board again

This 30" piece of bamboo was fished from the near-by Sandy river which runs into the Columbia which runs into the ocean I figured it could be considered oceanic. And Leroy is one of my carving heroes, this piece was accomplished with his influence.

T

Cy, incredible work (as always)!

Now that Mad Dog has posted Cy's piece I will finish mine this weekend, lol!

Jon, love your carve, Mad Dog, as always, incredible- Tiki Ano, oh my! David, killer, absolutely love it. Mauka, so cool. Joshua, amazing.

I couldn't think of better words than Tiki Ano's. This is a wonderful swap.

T

This is looking like one terrific Swap! Well, except for my part of it....

Next steps: First I added some acrylic paint...

IMG_4848

Then I took some steel wool to it (since my wire brush is apparently on the lam- or maybe at work)...

IMG_4863

I was torn between adding white and letting the wood stand out- then decided to go with the paint.

IMG_4864

Next up more wire brushing, then will see how it looks.

Thanks for lookin'. Using Wendy's technique of examining (and reviewing) one's own work via photos, I might have to go back and take the router to the shirt to add more texture to the red. Looks too flat to me. Still TBD.

Still so thankful for the ease of uploading photos vs the original days of TC...

Gosh this keeps on getting bigger and more fun. Terrific to see CY join in. Tiki Ano that carving is adorable. I'm looking forward to the 10 day countdown. That's always fun.

TikiAno, lookin' good!!!

Ano- thumbs up

Uh oh, 10 days--better get cracking.

T

Hang 10's countdown has begun....

(missed these). :)

T

I wasn't sure if the Aloha shirt found in the OA catalog was completely 'on theme,' so I decided to start on another piece- a mask/ carving found in the OA catalog.

TC OA

Will see if I can finish staining/ texturing....

First I sketched it out....

IMG_5012

Then I took the router to it

IMG_5013

then torched it, because I still like to do this- plus it helps me see what kind of texture needs to be added

IMG_5014

Then I cut it out.

IMG_5015

My wood stains are on the lam, so hoping I can track them down soon....

I’ve been too busy to finish the project I started a few weeks ago. So, I’m doing a different project that I will be able to finish by the 23rd.

Wendy, you wrote on the back of your art: from the Peabody book. What is the Peabody book?

John

MaukaHale, it is the book all about Oceanic Arts history. It's a wonderful huge book. Weighs around 5 pounds. Costs $140 plus shipping when we ordered ours last year. It got held up at the port for months. They may still be for sale on facebook.

Oops. It's Peek A Boo Gallery Oceanic Arts.

Wendy, that’s what I thought you meant but I wasn’t sure. I have that book and the auction book. I used a piece from the auction book for this years’s inspiration for the swap.

Here is the completed piece for the swap.

MaukaHale, looks great!!!

Approaching the end, here's what I have. Am I missing anyone?

Done so far - Joshua Bell, DanLovesTikis, MadDogMike, David Ray, Hang10Tiki, TikiAno, CY, MaukaHale

In progress - Hamo

Expressed interest - Swizzle, TikiG, AlohaStation,

Mike, is there a specific time on 7/23 we should be done? I want to make sure my print is dry, but I'm afraid I'm cutting it very close.

I'll remember to take pictures of my progress when I work on it again tomorrow.

Mauka: awesome

Hamo I consider the deadline to be midnight on the 23rd and I won't be awake to do the drawing then so I will do the drawing around 8 or 9 am on the 24th (Pacific Time)

T

Mauka, looks great!

This is another great Swap, looking forward to seeing the recap.. and of course more of Hang 10's countdowns.....

Oh good, then I'll be fine.

Need to grab dinner and do some more work on my piece.

Here's the inspiration for my piece:

IMG_7724

I'm doing a linoleum block print. There are different ways to print--I'm going with the reduction method, where you use one piece of lino, start with the background and remove areas for each successive layer.

IMG_7727

IMG_7726

IMG_7732

I like this medium, especially for this subject, because it's almost like carving a wooden carving in linoleum.

IMG_7733

Here's the second color, a red that I wanted a little darker that what came out of the tube. You want a certain sound when rolling it on the brayer; that's how you know the coverage is right.

IMG_7737

And here's my fancy baren

One more layer tomorrow, with a bit of black for outline, then frame it on Saturday.

PS, I totally should have taken Wendy's advice about photographing your work in order to see it differently, because I see now that it's not quite symmetrical, especially at the top. Plus, there's a spiral detail on the eyes that I wish I'd recreated.

That all might have been because I'd been drinking a fairly strong cocktail when I started working....

[ Edited by Hamo on 2022-07-21 23:28:25 ]

Very cool Hamo!

So there is no going back with this reduction method? If you mess up on step 3, the block for steps 1 and 2 are already gone right? Do you print a several while you are at it in the event of a mistake?

And I wouldn't worry about a little asymmetry, it's primative!

MaukaHale, looks great!!! I stole this from MadDogMike but he was right on.

Hamo I so love block prints. My first one was in 8th grade for a little booklet the art club was doing. I'm so happy to see this art form carried on. Mike is right, primitive art is not perfect.

Gosh so many wonderful pieces. We are all lucky to have each other.

Tomorrow morning, we will know the outcome. We are all waking up MadDogMike at 12:01 am!

Wendy, I really enjoyed working on this, so I may take it up as a hobby and do it more that just for the art swap.

Mike, you are right--there's no going back. It's almost like breaking the mug mold as you go along. I did print a few copies as tests and backups, and I have a print for myself, so this is almost one of a kind, no more to be made.

Hamo, nice work!

Hamo the carved block print is also a work of art. At least let us see it finished. I love seeing each scoop out of the material. It's wonderful you got it done.

Let's wake MadDogMike up at 12:01 am for the drawing!!!

Looks great Hamo, interesting process

So it looks like it's Joshua Bell, DanLovesTikis, MadDogMike, David Ray, Hang10Tiki, TikiAno, CY, MaukaHale, and Hamo

The only one I know of who was possibly interested that I have not heard back from is AlohaStation,

Hamo slid in just in time, nice!!!

Wake up Mad Dog n draw names out of a coconut

Lol

OK, the drawing is in! I used a randomized Team Picker Wheel. It put 3 in the first group instead of the usual last group but sometimes it's good to shake things up a bit

Hang10Tiki Hang10Tiki (above) sends to MadDogMike (below) MadDogMike MadDogMike (above) sends to Cy (below) Cy And Cy sends to Hang10Tiki

David Ray David Ray (above) swaps with Hamo (below) Hamo

MaukaHale MaukaHale (above) swaps with Joshua Bell (below) Joshua Bell

TikiAno1TikiAno2 Tiki Ano (one of the projects above) swaps with DanLovesTikis (below) DanLovesTikis

Contact your swap partner for a mailing address and get those puppies in the mail. MaukaHale, Joshua is out of town and his shipping will be delayed until the beginning of August. If both swap partners will be at Tiki Oasis, you may be able to swap there

Woo Hoo! Tiki Ano I want the shirt. May I have the shirt carving? I'm in limbo still waiting to see if I can have it until I hear from you. Send me your address via facebook messenger and I'll do the same.

Thank you MadDogMike for such a wonderful and fun Swap. I hope we keep having them.

Well Done fellow artists. Hugs, Wendy

Cool, cool, cool. Great work everyone. Thanks for another great swap, Mike!

T

Sorry I was missing in action- work (dang Comic Con catering) and family stole me away for a bit.

I have to say, all of the pieces in this Swap were incredible, and so very cool. Hamo, your work turned out killer, I would definitely keep going with it.

To Mad Dog and Wendy, I would say "no art is perfect"- and that's not a bad thing.

Wendy, so excited to Swap with you! You will be receiving both pieces- I finally got to add more stain today...

IMG_5355

Since this mask was the 'add-on,' it was technically finished after the Swap deadline but as my late Grandmother used to say, "Vaht can you do?"

Mad Dog, thanks for hosting another awesome Art Swap!
