Lonely Tiki in S. France (picture)

T templartiki Member Columbus, OH Joined: Dec 23, 2003 Posts: 11	T templartiki Posted posted on Mon, Dec 29, 2003 11:37 AM In a far corner of France, in the small town of Tarascon-sur-Ariège, not far from the Andorran border, deep in the Pyrénées this lonely Moai awaits to surprise travellers. The story (from Rapa Nui News Dec 1, 1998): A travelling exhibit of Easter Island art, developed by a group called ProChile V Region (in conjunction with the Association of Artisans of Easter Island) has recently returned to Chile after visiting Germany, Belgium, and France. The emphasis of the show was on pieces considered works of art, and of great ethnic value. The four artisans that went with the show made a Moai three meters tall and presented it to the city of Tarascon Sur Ariege in France. Another piece was donated to the Volkerkunde Museum in Hamburg, Germany where, in November 1999, there will be an exhibition of Easter Island artifacts. A. It's a pretty decent size and quite a nice rendering - I was going to photograph it when I was there again last weekend, but I forgot to take my camera downtown. I will try and get a pic next time I'm over there (which will be soon). Interesting how Chile has co-opted the moai as their own national icon. From what I understand their history of administering Rapa Nui is less than exemplary.
