I've been trying to find out what kind of tree I saw in a botanical garden. It's distinctive...has large leafs, and produced flowers.

It was marked to be a silk tree, but is not at all like any silk tree I've been able to look up.

Most interesting of all was it's enormous thorns on the boab-like trunk. It looke like a huge weapon wearing a tropical hat.

Any idears?

Well.....if you give me a name, I could tell you what it is......HAHAHAHAHA

Sounds like a Floss-Silk Tree is what you are thinking of.
Also called a Kapok Tree or Chorisia speciosa.
Spikey lil buggas to be sure.

Sure sounds like a floss silk tree. I believe there are two different color flowers you can get, red/pink and white. Beautiful trees.

Blammo!

KaBoom!!

Whammo!!!

You guys are amazing.

Want to start one of those soon...maybe a Bunyabunya too...see if I can get myself kicked outta the yard forever.

Anybody know if they will live in the Bay Area, or are they too tropical?
