Recipe: Orange Bitters

Pages: 1 7 replies

Has anyone got any good recipes that include orange bitters? I've got the one from Intoxica but that's it. I've tried it neat to taste, and it's certainly bitter.

Cheers

K-H,
I'm at work now, but I'm pretty sure I've got a pageful of recipes (courtesy of Fee Brothers). I'll post a few tonight. If you want the whole list, send me your address and I'll send you a copy.

Trader Vic's bartender's guide has a whole bunch of recipes that include orange bitters. The large number of recipes led me to buy what an unscrupulous Dutch bartender assured me was Orange Bitters, but turned out to be a n obscure Orange liqueur, drunk on the Queen of Holland's Birthday!

Unfortunately, many recipes in the book involve gin, which I know you're not that keen on.

Here's one picked at random:
Captain Kidd

1 oz Jamaican Rum
half oz dry sherry
half oz Scotch
1 tsp bar sugar
1 dash orange bitters
Shake well with cracked ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass.

K-H,
Most of the 10 recipes from Fee Bros. also have gin in them. Here's a couple that don't and one that does.

Adonis:
dash orange bitters
2 oz. dry sherry
1 oz sweet vermouth
stir with ice; strain into 3 oz. cocktail glass
garnish: twist of orange peel

Valencia:
4 dashes orange bitters
3/4 oz. orange juice
1 1/2 oz. apricot brandy
shake w/ ice; strain into 3 oz. glass
fill w/ champagne

Yale:
3 dashes orange bitters
1/3 oz. rock candy syrup
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
1 dash maraschino liqueur
1 1/2 oz. gin
shake w/ ice; strain into 3 oz. glass
garnish: twist of lemon peel

Cheers for that. BTW, I don't mind gin, it's just G&T I can't stand.

My favorite drink recipe is a Martiki:

8 ounces white rum (my favorite is white Rhum Barbancourt)
capful of dry vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters

Great drink!

I had the Yale last night and it was one nice drink. Dry with loads of flavour.

Cheers

this cocktail i believe is 1930's vintage. i would recommend a sweet sherry to balance out the bitters flavour. it's also pretty easy :)

Xeres
2 1/2 Oz Sherry
1 Dash Fee's Orange Bitters
1 Dash Fee's Peach Bitters

Directions: Stir with ice. Strain into a 3 oz cocktail glass.
